With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

First up is five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman, who is now on board as Scout’s Deputy Editor.

... 2

After four days of price reveals, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) opened its doors for the 2022/23 campaign on Tuesday.

So, in this, my first column of the new season, I thought I’d jot down some initial thoughts on strategy, plus teams/players that have caught my eye, and then build a very rough first draft based around that.

There are still just over four weeks to go until the season gets underway, and lots will change during that time, so I’m treating this as a kind of pre-season Watchlist that I can then develop.

SHORTER-TERM THINKING?

Firstly, the most important takeaway from Tuesday’s launch: Fantasy managers will get unlimited transfers during the six-week hiatus between Gameweeks 16 and 17, when the Premier League takes a break to accommodate the World Cup.

It’s effectively a third chance to completely overhaul your squad, as the two usual Wildcards remain in place.

As you have to use the first one by Gameweek 16, the season is almost split into quarters, which means I think we can afford to be a bit more aggressive and short-term with our initial picks.

This means I’m not really looking beyond Gameweek 6 for my initial set-up, as realistically, the latest I’ll use my first Wildcard – in between Gameweeks 8 and 9 – is the September international break.

As a result, I’m considering Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne (£5.0m) in an attempt to capitalise on those opening four fixtures against Bournemouth, Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham United.

By which point, he can then be moved onto someone in the £4.5m defender pool, a bracket I really like this year.

BEST £4.5M FPL DEFENDERS?

The £4.5m defender category is absolutely stacked with talent this year, and due to the kind pricing of the premium options, I feel it might be ignored.

And I like the idea of moving this spot around during the season to capitalise on certain fixture swings, with the names below all catching my eye over the past few days.

For example, James Justin (£4.5m) and Sven Botman’s (£4.5m) good runs start in Gameweek 6, while Vladimir Coufal’s (£4.5m) is a week later, something I touched on in my recent ‘When to best ‘hop on’ players with good fixtures’ article.

Lewis Dunk, Tariq LampteyBrighton and Hove Albion
Marc GuehiCrystal Palace
Timothy Castagne, James JustinLeicester City
Sven BotmanNewcastle United
Vladimir CoufalWest Ham United

CHELSEA‘S FPL ASSETS

Given that Chelsea have consistently been one of the best defences in the league under Thomas Tuchel, their assets feel a little under-priced this year. Edouard Mendy (£5.0m), plus both wing-backs at just £6.0m, could offer real value, even if the mooted switch to a back-four formation comes to fruition.

A lot will depend on recruitment and if they can successfully replace Antonio Rudiger, but if they can, a £5.0m starting ‘keeper from a Champions League-level defence feels like a sound investment, especially if you think they can improve on last season’s tally of 15 clean sheets.

The impact of a switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation could also boost their attacking output, which is why I have included Mason Mount (£8.0m) in my first draft. However, if Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) completes his move from Manchester City, I have a feeling he could really shake things up, with the prospect of Raphinha (£7.0m) feeding him from the right-flank a mouthwatering one for FPL managers. In that scenario, the winger would almost certainly make it into my Gameweek 1 team.

BEST BUDGET FPL PICKS

So, it’s safe to say a lot will change between now and next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline, but isn’t it fun being back talking FPL again armed with all the info?

Also, a quick shout out to Pras and Andy, who made some really nice points in last night’s ‘How to build a first draft’ video, which I’ve linked below in case you missed it.

I feel like you could easily do much better with the money saved in defence and from no Salah. Would happily have you in my ML with that team 😉

If Ronaldo goes I think Bruno could be good value at 10m assuming he'd be back on pens

I would be tempted by that if Raphinha ends up at Chelsea. Tough opening fixtures for Zaha and Barnes. Coutinho could be good but not sold on him for some reason. Maybe a strong pre-season could change my mind.

Any expert tips gents ? 🙂

Dullard Team to bank a steady start:

    Mendy 4.0
Robbo TAA Cancelo (White / 4.0)
    Saka Mount Maddison Diaz BrunoG
    Toney Kane (4.5)

Kane not fashionable I know atm - and may become Haaland depending on preseason

No Salah hence the pool triple up to offset that - not ideal

Think Toney is still good value and should end the season again as one of the top fwds. Pretty secure game time as well...

Jesus' penalty record is dreadful. Martinelli took the last pen - likely to be him or Saka

  8. Toothis

Seeing loads of Martinelli in drafts. Great player, but are we not expecting pretty heavy rotation for him? I think he will share mins with ESR and Pepe?

    1. pundit of punts
      • 13 Years
      4 years, 12 days ago

Peep is out of the equation. He is not even preferred as a sub and is a RW player replacing Saka most of the times.

      ESR is the only competition

But for his price and talent if Martinelli plays 75-80 mins every game with the odd 90 mins in between then it’s worth it

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        4 years, 12 days ago

Optimistic on his mins, there, I think, but I still like him for 45-80 mins per game, with the odd cameo in between.

High praise from Arteta last season. Great presser and I remember him getting 70 plus minutes regularly last season

Played a few 90s as well

A year older and such sublime finishing abilities it’s his season to kick on IMO

          1. Toothis
            • 5 Years

Will ESR get games at number 10 then (in place of Odegaard) or will he be benched a lot? Thought he looked brilliant last year be a shame for him if he falls down pecking order.

            1. Deulofail
              • 10 Years
              4 years, 12 days ago

Agree, he was better than Martinelli imo, but struggling for fitness in the second half of the season with Arteta perhaps favoring Martinelli tactically as well. Jesus has been brought in for his pressing, so if that's the game plan and Martinelli continues to start, I don't see the point of wearing him down for the full 90 mins unless it's a slow game.

ESR is also a year older, and has proven himself at least as good a finisher than Martinelli. And Arteta prasises all players that aren't in the group who have been/are being culled. So I don't see those things as relevant to Martinelli specifically.

          2. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            4 years, 12 days ago

5 subs simply means fewer minutes for Martinelli when compared to the second half of last season. I can't see why it would stay the same or increase. Jesus, Vieira (and maybe another attacking player) are players Arteta wants, and wants to play, so yet more reason why Martinelli's mins will more likely decrease.

Yeah I get. you, my thinking is apart from the the City and Pool games his first ten are great from an attacking part of view and even then I could see him scoring in one of the two. Plus I expect a decent right winger to come in at Newcastle and for them to start strong. I reckon he could be a potential early bandwagon with those first two

Amongst the sea of RMTs what are your unpopular opinions so far?

I'll start, while Jesus is in my team I don't think he's that nailed on to be a total fpl success as people are assuming, in real world football he'll do great for arsenal but purely goals and assists I'm not too sure he's gonna make a mockery of 8m

I'm sticking with him don't get me wrong but come end of the season I'm not expecting him to have perform like a 9m or 10m player I think he's been priced right, even a chance he does slightly worse than what we expect for 8m

Jesus has great stats historically, think he will do well. His consistent underperformance of xG is a slight worry, though.

Perisic: I don't see the hype. Lots of managers better than me are convinced on him though.

Raya/Toney/Brentford: great fixtures on paper but I personally think they could be a relegation candidate. If that were to transpire then there is no such thing as good fixtures for them.

Obviously time will tell and they are "unpopular" opinions for a reason.

    My original draft was:

    Mendy 4.0
    TAA Cancelo James Tomiyasu Jonny
    Salah Diaz Rashford Neto 4.5
    Haaland Jesus 4.5

Trying to find a way to upgrade one of my 4.5s to Perisic but finding it very difficult.

Can always downgrade the other 4.5 to Neco Williams (assuming he moves), but then I'm still 0.5 short. Best way to come up with the last 0.5?

    A) Mendy -> 4.5
    B) Rashford -> Martinelli (I'm really keen on the Rashford punt)
    C) Neto -> Bailly
    D) Other

The template forward line seem to be 2 up too with Jesus and Haaland.

There haven’t been enough ROI from forwards last couple of seasons.

What makes everyone think 2 quality strikers but playing in new team/country will set the league fire?

Isn’t it more wise/safe to invest in KDB/Son/Kane with that cash for a start and go from there?

This is almost identical to my live fpl draft. I had Erickson where Bruno is and Raya in goal but the rest was the exact same. You can potentially change Son>KDB into GW2. I essentially decided upgrading White to a wing back and getting Jesus over a mid priced midfielder was worth the Son>Kulu downgrade. 3meium is a real option though

To be honest, you dont have a lot of choice....there are not a lot of strikers like couole years ago.

Jesus has great stats and has been 9m in previous seasons. Now he's 8m and going to play as a central forward probably. I can see the appeal. Especially if he finally stops underperforming his stats. Haaland is a first City forward since Aguero that is going to be central to their attack. Also not surprised by his popularity.

Haaland - could set league scoring records being the only real striker in front of one of the best teams the world has ever seen. There's a very good chance he starts next season priced at 13+. I'll take my chances on him from the start. If he's not great, easy pivot to Kane.

Jesus - Nailed striker for a top 6 team for 8.0. If any of the other clubs had someone in a similar position we'd be on them too.

Not enough ROI from forwards, so we should consider Kane over Haaland and Jesus? I think the logic is a bit muddled there.

But I think the obvious point on Haaland and Jesus vs KDB and Son is that they are cheaper. And ultimately you have to assess case by case: the idea that ROI across one category will hold across that category one another season doesn't really fly with me. The category is somewhat arbitrary since you could also look at the top 5 forwards from a good season for those forwards vs top 5 mids in a bad season for those mids, as these could land at any point.

Is this going to be a better season for ROI on top 5 forwards or top 5 mids? Or All forwards vs all mids? I don't know, but I also don't really care, as I just want the best ROI for the individual players.

Or rather, the whole XI when I select them to play in any given week...
...Traditionally cheap mids are much better than cheap FWDs, so there's more to the equation than mid-high priced FWDs vs mid-high priced mids, as you're building an entire squad.

Yes I would consider the safest pick to start, i.e penalty taker and top forward Kane over Haaland to start with. But as you said, everyone will have their own opinion and for me I prefer to wait and see for Haaland. Could well spectacularly backfire as ownership is already over 60%.

        1. Deulofail

Yeah, assessing them player-by-player, Haaland is riskier, I agree. I wouldn't agree that this means you should not go with Haaland and/or Jesus, necessarily, though.

            • 14 Years

Of course not. For me though, playing 2 players with new teams/country and investing almost 20m for the forward position where returns already not sustainable is a no no.

I can understand Jesus at least, cheaper and already adapted to country at least. But I’d rather to invest in KDB if it’s city attacking that I’m after. That’s how I would prefer to “start”.

Yeah I don't like Haaland + Jesus together I think.

Two forwards moving to new teams. I think one or the other. And at the moment, Haaland has more upside and explosive potential.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years

But why does it matter than 2 of your players are moving to new teams? I really don't get the interaction, but I'm happy for people to avoid good options because they have another good option with the same abstract feature associated with them. It's not like they are both high risks to play 0 minutes.

It's just I want to avoid having an awful start by backing too many players in new surroundings like I did 2 years ago.

I had Werner, Havertz and Dele Alli to start that season. It didn't go well.

There is more chance of things not going as plan. Haaland might not settle/be rotated in. Jesus might not start well and might not even play up front. We don't know yet. If both don't work you're in trouble. If one doesn't, well at least you can switch off him early.

          2. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            4 years, 12 days ago

This is true of every pick you make. If there was no risk associated, we would all have the 15 most obvious players. It's not even safe to go for JWP because he might not get any attacking returns for the first 6 weeks.

The fact that Haaland might not return many points is true of him and him alone and does not affect Jesus. If you find the risk too great for the price, and not worth the potential payoff, you shouldn't pick him (unless there are no better options). Same is true for literally every player.

I personally think 'moving to a new team' is an empty/unnecessary label/narrative that adds noise to decision-making. You could also consider the risk-associated labels:

            - 'outperformed their xG last season'
            - 'outperformed their xG 3 seasons ago'
            - 'Featured in press getting drunk on summer break',
            - 'incoming competition to the squad',
            - 'multiple injuries in their careers,
            - etc. x 10,000

And then check that you don't have too many of each of these categories across the whole squad. Except that would be chaos - impossible!

Instead you assess these things on a player-by-player basis. The same is true for me when considering players moving from one team to another. I hope that makes sense.

Why would you dismiss 'moving to a new team' as a factor? It's just as if not more important than any of those other factors you listed. At least we understand how they fit into their manager's philosophy and we have games to assess their performance. When a new transfer happens we don't have any of that so yes, it makes those players more risky to pick.

Not saying they won't work out, but you could easily make a team of 'potential world beaters' like:

Sterling, Mahrez, Vardy, Haaland, Jesus, James and yeah maybe it will work out some weeks but the chances of all of them working is almost zero so you do have to pick some 'reliable' picks for balance.

I dismiss it as a category to check your team against. Like: 'Only one player from a new team, otherwise, it's too much risk from that arbitrary category of risk'.

It's a perfectly valid factor to consider for each player individually.

So? Does that mean he is 100% nailed and he will drop Kulu straight away or play him wingback?

Spurs are in CL and they needed a squad depth

I just see a great rotation risk there....even worst, switch of position

Yes it are you still suggesting Richarlison 100% nailed to start with? I don’t understand your rationale of him being 60m and nailed. Not being rude, just trying to understand your logic

    It’s almost Kyrgios time again.

As bad steward as he is, lad is so entertaining and funny to watch.

Man is he entertaining, I've never been a HUGE fan of tennis, but I know a lot about it and have followed it casually since early 00s(I'm in my early 30s). And Kyrgios makes me, almost, watch a whole tennis match.

Keep coming back to this, feel it offers the best value and flexibility with the prices.

Kane could ofc be Haaland, but for GW1 think I will be Kane (K):

    Sanchez
    Trent | Cancelo | James | Chilwell | Doherty
    Salah | Kulusevski | Martinelli
    Kane | Jesus

    Steele | Pereira | Colback | Greenwood

    Thoughts? Think it’s quite template!

    Thanks

4.5 Keeper + Chilwell vs. 4.5 Defender + Mendy is definitely a struggle for me.

Why have you decided on the former?

More upside to Chilwell than Mendy so easy decision for me

But until Alonso is sold, there's also a lot more downside to Chilwell.

True, I guess could be then Perisic and Mendy - but then the headache of having to choose between James and Chilwell!

For me James is the easy choice there.

Mendy doesn’t actually offer many points - the opposite of a bonus point magnet. Was 7th for points per match last season. Think he is incredibly overhyped as an fpl asset.

Hmmm. Guaita having more points per match than him last season is wild. I owned Guaita for a little while and it was awful.

Yeah, I get that Chilwell costs 1.0 more than Mendy, but it seems like most drafts are conceding they need to take either a 4.5 keeper or defender.

        Think of it this way.

If all things are equal, the difference between Sanchez and Mendy is likely to be about 25 points.

The difference between Chilwell and a £4.5 defender could be 50+ points.

The gap between keeper points is usually quite small in comparison, but premium defenders can comfortably outscore their £4.5m counterparts.

    RMT:

    Mendy (Vegovuc)

    TAA, Cancelo, James, Botman, Tomiyasu

    Salah, KDB, Diaz, Coutinho (Pereira)

    Jesus (4.5, 4.5)

It's looks over budget which is a good sign, I would be concerned about your bench however if Jesus doesn't play you are likely to be down to 10 men as 5-5-0 isn't a valid formation.

I don’t think I’ve ever picked a team as quickly as this pre season. I wouldn’t say I’m 100% ecstatic but hopefully the transfer window will through up a few more possibilities.

    How’s this Salah-Son-Haaland draft looking?

    Raya - 4.0

    Robertson - Chilwell - tomiyasu - Jonny - 4.0

    Salah - Son - ASM - Neto - Andreas

    Haaland - Jesus- 4.5

    B. Jesus + Bruno G., Martinelli rotation

Seems a lot of money on the bench in both. I prefer Saka or Martinelli over Jesus. Forest's opening fixtures don't scream goals to me but I do think Johnson has great potential. Bruno G doesn't interest me too much
