Having already provided the lowdown on Steve Cooper, our series on the newly-promoted Premier League sides continues with this look at Nottingham Forest’s defence.

In this article, we will assess the Championship play-off winners’ overall clean sheet chances and then look at some of the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players in their backline.

Our third and final piece will discuss Forest’s midfielders and forwards.

To help us with our research, we spoke to Fantasy Football Scout’s founding father and Forest supporter, Mark Sutherns, to provide a fan’s view.

You can find everything you need to know about fellow new boys Fulham and Bournemouth here.

The stats in this piece are taken from FotMob and WhoScored.

WHAT IS FOREST’S CLEAN SHEET POTENTIAL?

Nottingham Forest's defence assessed ahead of FPL return in 2022/23

Forest had the second-best defensive record in the Championship last season, conceding 40 goals in 46 matches, only trailing Bournemouth (39).

They kept 17 clean sheets, a reasonable return but some way short of the Cherries’ league-leading total of 21.

However, it’s worth noting that at the time of Cooper’s appointment in September, Forest had made their worst start to a season for 108 years, claiming only a single point from their first seven Championship games under Chris Hughton, a period that saw them concede 12 goals.

When he was first appointed, Cooper was flexible in his approach, switching from a back four and a central-defensive trio. But this year (see below), it has largely been a back three all the way, which has seen Forest tighten up significantly and concede only five goals at the City Ground in 2022.

“Once Cooper arrived and certainly in 2022, Forest were the best defensive side in the Championship. The trio of Worrall, McKenna and Steve Cook earned the collective nickname of “The Wall” to emphasise just how effective they were at keeping teams at bay. At the City Ground in particular, Forest conceded just five goals in 2022 and were known for their ability to limit teams to half chances.” – Mark Sutherns

The underlying stats don’t really do Forest justice, given that they are skewed due to their poor start under Hughton, but we’ll include them below for reference.

Can an admin get in touch please? I've had my subscription on auto-renewal for the longest time but been seeing some comments that has me worried I won't get the discounted price as my subscription doesn't renew until it expires in August, which is obviously after the deal date has passed.

I have exactly the same issue. I have emailed FFS support and they have said I will renew in August at the same price as last year.

So even if we've cancelled auto renew and at the time of our subscription expiring whenever that may be will we get the new price of £24.99 or in my case £17.50 which is what I paid the previous season?

Love the look of my team without Salah, but it probably won't get any more points. Not worth the risk going without... Unless Diaz...

Upgrades across the whole team plus now having a beast captain (Haaland) is enough to convince me to start without Salah.

Make sure to have a quick route to another beast captain as Haaland is rather injury prone.

Salah/Kane/Son are two ft's/-4 hit away. Replacing Haaland is rather simple.

For me transfers are precious but fair enough, good luck going without Salah !

I've spent a lot of time building a strategy for the coming season and I involves one premium player, no matter what. Whether I'm comfortable with it or not I almost irrelevant. To me Haaland looks like the best value premium so I'm building a team around him and packing the first 11. No Neto's or Mitrovic's around here. Skidmark free team 😀

Pretty solid but I would do Bruno G over Odegaard. Also Bowen > Diaz enables you to upgrade Johnson.

Delph doesn't get the respect he deserves. Incredible passer, very good at progressing the ball, clever player. And superb defensively. Shame he's never fit.

I wonder why Pep has sucked all the pace out of the frontline. They don't have as much penetration anymore...

Agree he shouldn't have let both Sterling and Jesus go. Especially to rivals.

I like it, did a draft myself with 4x 8.0 mids (Diaz, Mount, Foden, Saka) in a 4-4-2. Rest of the draft was pretty much what you have, apart from Robbo drops out of defence Just worried about no Salah and if he fires then it is pretty much WC time

I'll start with Kulusevski until proven otherwise - easy to switch to Maddison Mount Saka or Citeh mid though it wastes a transfer.

I don't think it does - Rich will primarily come on for Son (as a sub). It kills Moura. Having said that, I have shied away from Kulu due to slight concerns.

This is similar to me. On paper he should mostly cover Son and Kane but surely there will be games where he'll play instead of Kulusevski and that's my worry, trying to avoid starting with anyone (or at least no more than 1 player) that may be a rotation risk and thus needing to be moved on so I've moved towards Bowen instead. For now at least

Who do we anticipate getting more points... Robbo or L.Diaz?

Currently sat with L.Diaz and a 4.5 def... wondering if its worth switching to Robbo and a 5.5 mid.

Back line is currently: TAA, Cancelo, James, Perisic + (a 4.5 tbc)

    1. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years
      4 years, 14 days ago

I think they'll finish close enough to make that 1m saved with Robbo the decisive factor. However, there are no 5.5 mids good enough to justify investing in. It depends on your whole squad though - who would you lose at the back for Robbo? How would your midfield look? and so on.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Well that's the other thing... plenty of 4.5 def capable to matching the 5.5 mids on offer too. In my head there's nothing in it either way, hence why I'd see what others thought...

        I'm basically looking at either:
        Trent, [ROBBO], Cancelo, James, Perisic
        Salah, Neto, Martinelli, [5.5], 4.5
        Jesus, Haaland, 4.5

        Or

        Trent, Cancelo, James, Perisic, [4.5]
        Salah, [DIAZ], Neto, Martinelli, 4.5
        Jesus, Haaland, 4.5

    Who scores more?
    1) Haaland, 5.0 Mid in a 5-3-2
    2) Luis Diaz, Madison in 5-4-1

Will have the usual templates Salah, Kane, TAA, Cancelo in team

Thought on this as a first draft....not sure on Coutinho and have decided to go without Mo.

    Alisson, Forster
    Chillwell, TAA, Laporte, Doherty Tomiyasu
    KDB, Diaz, Coutinho, Martinelli, Murphy
    Haaland, Jesus, Greenwood

Thoughts on Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia this season?

If Gerrard persists with his narrow 4312, which seemed to emerge as his favourite system, it doesn't really look like there's a natural spot for a winger like Bailey. Could perhaps get a few games up front, but I would guess he appears mostly off the bench. Buendia deputy to Coutinho in this system. If, however, he switches to more of a 433 with wingers/inside forwards, the appeal & mins of both should be boosted immensely

Agree with these points, Bailey impact sub, Buendia should get a fair few minutes but not enough to be a fpl option

Problem with the big 5 defence is that City, Chelsea, Pool (and arsenal) all away on same gameweeks. Could result in some proper low scores. Spurs kinda balance that but that's a concern for me

If last year is anything to go by, this should not make a difference:
City - 10/21 away from home, Chelsea 10/16, Liverpool 9/21, Spurs 8/16, and Arsenal 6/13.

Overall, 43 out of 87 CSs for these teams came away from home.

Could Nexo Williams/Periera rotate enough to cover a starting spot? Would allow a KDB Kane Salah triple up.

    Raya (4.0)
    Tomiyasou James Dias TAA (Williams?)*
    KDB Salah Neto (Periera?)* (Colback)
    Kane Jesus

I wouldn't want to rely on Williams and Periera as starters in my 11. Happy to have them autosub from the bench though when required

Main concern is being subbed off before 60mins (see community article on Conte's subbing of wing backs at Inter). Should start ahead of Emerson & Spence though, at least initially. Good value at 5m. A maybe for me

I'm referring to the period at Inter when 5 subs were allowed. Discussed here:

Assuming he is match fit in GW1, I think he is a better option than Perisic. Purely down to known quantity in PL. Spence has been linked with Spurs but not sure he will step up straight away to the PL and take the RWB spot.

The only point against Alisson is that you'll want 3 outfielders - TAA, Salah and Robbo/Diaz.
With City you might want Haaland and Cancelo or Laporte, but if you don't want 3 outfielders, Ederson will suit.
For the same price, I don't think Lloris is equal value. Plenty value going cheaper, but with the Big 2 you know you can set-n-forget forever.

      Possibly yes.

Justin is great value at 4.5m but need to see LEI defence improve first.

Martinelli could be great but likely to be a rotation risk with ESR.

Neto seems OK value but not exciting when you look at wolves attacking numbers last season

Not sure. There’s so many good 8.0m midfield options this year. I’d personally downgrade Son and upgrade Martinelli & Bruno.

I am, don't think theres that much value in forwards this year apart from the big hitters - much more value in the midfielders for similar price points

I haven't budged away from 541. Only other formation I'm considering at the moment is 442 for flexibility

I'm tempted but the problem with going down that route is that 5-5-0 is an invalid formation so when your striker doesn't play for any reason you're likely to be down to 10 men.
