The ‘Sleeper’ series returns to Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who had a quieter 2021/22, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise, who we think have the potential to make an impact in the coming season.

Here, we look at David Raya (£4.5m), who could push his way back into our thoughts as an FPL asset in 2022/23.

The screenshots and data are from our Premium Members Area – sign up today for £2.49 a month (billed annually) to get access to all of these statistics and a whole lot more.

2021/22: FPL RECORD AND STATS

FPL 2022/23 'sleeper' picks: David Raya 1
  • Starts: 24
  • Goals conceded: 27
  • Clean sheets: 8
  • Saves: 78
  • FPL points: 95 (4.0 per match)

David Raya was one of Brentford’s best players in their debut Premier League campaign, as they ended in 13th place, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

The 26-year-old featured in 24 games for The Bees despite missing a few months due to a knee injury, conceding only 27 goals and keeping eight clean sheets, form which earnt him a maiden international call-up for Spain.

In that time, Raya also collected five bonus and 20 save points, proving himself to be a very capable shot-stopper at this level.

The Spaniard ranked 17th in his position for FPL points, but matched Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) on a points-per-match basis, a record that placed him joint-fourth among regular starters, only behind Alisson (£5.5m), Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) and Ederson (£5.5m):

With Raya injured last season, Brentford missed his presence greatly, with his deputy Alvaro Fernandez conceding 24 goals in 12 appearances, only registering one clean sheet.

However, following his return to action in February, it’s fair to say The Bees and Raya stepped up a level.

From Gameweek 24 onwards, in 15 starts, Raya averaged 4.1 points per match, a tally only two regular starting ‘keepers could beat (see below).

Five clean sheets were kept in that time, while the Spaniard also racked up 56 saves – only Illan Meslier (£4.5m), Nick Pope (£5.0m), Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) recorded more.

Raya’s passing ability, which is crucial to the way Brentford try to play out from the back, is also worth noting, with only Alisson, Ederson and Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) surpassing his BPS pass completion total of 32.

“I’ve always felt comfortable with the ball at my feet, and we work on that every week. The manager wants us to be another attacker, an extra element in bringing the ball out, creating chances and passes, short and long.” – David Raya

“The goalkeeper could wear the number ten shirt. He has sent several incredible balls, exactly what you should do when you play against us.” – Jurgen Klopp on David Raya after Brentford’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool in September

2022/23: THE PROSPECTS

Squad steps up as Robertson maintains fine form: FPL notes from Liverpool v Brentford 5

After a stellar first season in the Premier League, Brentford will look to continue improving in 2022/23.

And their end-of-season form bodes well, as they won seven of their last 11 matches, keeping four clean sheets while only conceding 12 goals.

“We will keep the foundations from this year – the defensive side of the game, fitness and set pieces. Then we’d like to add a bit more on the offensive side of the game in terms of controlling games like we did against West Ham at home. That was a very good example of how I’d like us to dominate games even more.” – Thomas Frank

“I don’t believe in all this second season stuff or the narrative around it. That said, I know we can be relegated next season, but I also know we can finish seventh. Everything’s possible between 20th and seventh. We want to add layers, build and end higher and play better football. That’s the aim, but you never know what happens to a team when they get a lot of injuries or lose momentum. But hopefully we’ll avoid that and build.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford ended the 2021/22 season ranked eighth overall for expected goals conceded (xGC, see below), but the fact the players now look comfortable in a 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 offers encouragement that they can adapt tactically to different situations and maybe improve upon that defensive record.

Notably, the Bees have a sustained good run of fixtures right through until the World Cup break.

In fact, they don’t meet one of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12, while Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool aren’t concerns until the festive period.

The big six sides they do encounter in Gameweeks 8 and 12 both have to come to the Brentford Community Stadium, too.

Now, with hopefully an injury-free season ahead of him, managers looking for value should consider Raya, who is perhaps the pick of the £4.5m ‘keepers on offer in FPL.

Kane could rise if he starts well, Haaland less likely to, so getting Kane back needs a spare half million.

I'm tempted by this hokey comedy but WHU away is not a hard fixture, WHU conceded plenty against worse teams at home last year, Leeds & Brentford spring to mind.

Additionally gives you 2 weeks to assess\spot emerging gems\in form players before playing WC - good luck !

That’s nice. It’s tempting. Do you want to WC in GW 2?

Think if I was WCing that early I’d want one of Kane or Son in my team for the Southampton game but I suppose you need to spread the funds to get a decent bench.

I said I was going to do this after 2 disastrous BB’s.

It’s not just the week of the BB it ruins. It kind of restricts you moving up to your chosen week.
I know the call is to use it as close to a WC as possible to eradicate this problem but it hasn’t worked for me.

Having said that, I still think it’s a mistake to use it off the bat. Especially when we don’t know all the starters or players in form.
I really do hate the chip.

      4. Eze Really?
        • 11 Years

Fraught with danger IMO. The one time we can never be sure of a 15 player turnout is GW1. I know why it is popular and it could have worked for me in games gone by, but I would rather wait for the unknown opportunity but refrain from planning a BB that can be restricting.

        1. Christina.
          • 15 Years
          3 years, 5 months ago

Maybe, but we all know the danger of a BB in a DGW. Very few bench players actually play x2 and in week 1 you can actually afford to spread cash to get decent players, just so you can WC in 2.

Anyway, Im set on it. Last year my BB did well but I suffered in the week I had to carry funds on my bench for the rest of the gameweeks. Plus we get an extra WC this season.

I really like the idea of BB1 in general tbh but i think with the great opening fixtures for big teams i'm not sure this is the year for it, for me at least. I would field a similar team to yours but with 1 of Kane/Haaland/Son, an extra premium def and another 8m mid... Which could match or outscore your BB. So were going into gw2 with similar points but i'm up a WC and a BB chip... assuming your planning on wc'ing out in GW2? I do like your reasoning behind it tho and wish the best.

but yes I agree, holding the BB over you is not necessarily an advantage as the faffing round either side of deploying it can, and has in the past, cost me more than I made with it.

You can still target the big teams with great fixtures, but I like the fact that Newc has NFO and Villa has bournemouth. You dont have to pick a 4.5mf for a BB1 or 2 x 4.5m keepers

I am looking at the game so far and see a pattern forming into template and alternatives.
For example: TAA/Robbo RJames/Chillwell Cancelo/Laporte Best 8mil/choice of many others. Haaland/Kane. Etc Etc.
Is anyone brave enough to go for alternatives in all positions?

It's effectively comparing for GW1 Haaland +4 vs Kane as booking in a transfer will almost guarantee a hit elsewhere.

He's a relatively short term pick his ppg over the season doesnt concern me. Starting striker for liverpool against fulham and palace with 5% ownership it's a self explanatory excellent pick his points potential is as good as kane and haaland.

I really want Haaland but if I want all those premium defenders and 8.0 mids something has to give. There is no bench which is also a worry with some of these picks and finally I don’t even rate Jesus but he might be worth a punt at the the price and has fixtures. Anyway what do ye think?

      Henderson

      TAA VVD Cancelo Laporte James

      Salah Foden Kulusevski Mount

Yeah it’s just tweaking it a bit. Haaland means too 8 mil mids have to be 6.0 instead and don’t know if it is worth it.

Possible compromise is VVD to Alison and Laporte could be downgraded to allow a bench upgrade.

I don't feel the love for Jesus. If he wasn't good enough at Citeh when being supplied by all their talent I don't know how a move to Arsenal can improve his output.

And Haaland would need to score 30+ goals to come close to Son or KdB's likely points total.

MIDs are the way to go imo.

I can’t disagree with any of that. We know where the points are and it’s not up front. But Haaland is different gravy, he should still go 250 plus even with reduced points over the mids.

I'm just messing around with some stats for the second part of the 21/22 season and a few things surprised me...

TAA was only the 29th highest points scorer (Robertson & Matip blew him out the water)

Bowen was the 4th highest points scorer (my feeble memory thought he dropped off a little after the New Year)

JWP was the 10th highest outfield points scorer (admittedly having played more minutes than some more exalted players directly below him in the rankings). At 6.5m, could he be considered a safe starting option until the 22/23 revelations materialise?

Cancelo was only the 19th highest points scorer, surrounded by the likes of Cash, Harrison, Zaha & Barnes (the last three of which played a lot less minutes)

Of those with meaningful game time, Matt Doherty was only preceded by Andy Robertson for minutes per FPL point

I think I'm fairly settled on this structure....any thoughts?

      Henderson, Forster

TAA, Laporte, Chilwell, Trippier, N Williams

      Salah, Mount, Diaz, Martinelli, Andreas

      Kane, Wilson, Greenwood

Originally had gone a bit bigger in midfield but feel I need to be able to jump on Haaland if he bangs early on. Wilson could easily move to Toney or Antonio when he inevitably gets injured

I don't really keep up to speed with the subtle nuances of the game and how they can affect a players output but as I commented above, Bowen's form this year rates him much higher than 8.5m. He's a handicap snip if he carries on where he left off.
