For students of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) statistics, the recent price reveals have enabled them to delve deep into finding new ways to perfect their Gameweek 1 squads.

Here, we will combine two popular stats into one number.

Points-per-gameA player’s total FPL points are divided by their number of appearances.
ValueA player’s total FPL points are divided by price. In this case, starting prices.

This should help optimise the £100m budget beyond premium assets like Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Son Heung-min (£12.0m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Harry Kane (£11.5m).

Although a golden piece of FPL wisdom usually advises managers to look forward, rather than chase past points, let’s try to determine which 2022/23 players offer the best value based on their 2021/22 performances.

Last season’s PPG Value

Using last season‘s starting prices and the data from our Premium Members Area, these are the players with the best points-per-game-per-million (PPGP£m) scores in 2021/22:

For example, Joel Matip (£6.0m) took part in 31 matches and totalled 170 points – a rate of 5.484 per game. Divide this by his £5.0m starting price and he’s the only player to exceed 1.00 for PPG Value. It’s no surprise to see Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) right at the top too, whilst Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t held back by a £7.5m price.

On the left are those who played over 1,800 league minutes. By raising this to 2,052 minutes (60% of the possible 3,420), the likes of Reece James (£6.0m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) are removed, as seen on the right.

This is unlucky on Ben Chilwell (£6.0m), who would likely take Marcos Alonso‘s (£5.5m) place on the list had he not suffered a serious injury. Until then, his six outings brought in three goals, three clean sheets and a whopping 54 points.

We can already see defensive domination, with three £4.5m goalkeepers sitting inside the top eight. Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m) and Emmanuel Dennis (£5.0m) are the only attackers to reach the upper section.

Changes for 2022/23

This only intensifies now that the upcoming season’s prices have been released. Bargain attackers from last year such as Bowen, James Maddison (£8.0m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) have had a steep increase in outlay, with Diogo Jota (£9.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.0m) amongst those to now be categorised as forwards rather than midfielders.

Furthermore, many of last year’s players have been lost to relegation or transfers abroad, affecting the likes of Dennis, Antonio Rudiger and Sadio Mane.

Another mitigating factor is that Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Richarlison (£8.5m) have switched Premier League clubs over the summer. Whereas Jesus has left a squad role at Manchester City to likely become the focal point at Arsenal, the reverse is probably happening to Richarlison. For them, the last campaign’s points-per-game data is therefore irrelevant.

This season’s PPG Value

Now we take a look at PPMG£m using this year’s prices.

Matip’s numbers were so strong that the subsequent £1m rise hasn’t knocked him down, although it’s a surprise to see Tierney so high. His 22 starts brought 11 clean sheets and four attacking returns but he was overshadowed by much-owned teammate Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m).

Once those under 60% playing time are removed, it leaves a trio of Liverpool names on top. A big talking point of price reveals was the drop of goalkeeper Alisson from £6.0m to £5.5m, who now offers a genuine budget-saving supplement to Alexander-Arnold or Robertson.

A handful of these leading names are likely to remain avoided. Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) couldn’t reach 2,052 minutes and that’s before Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) arrived, whilst Marcos Alonso (£5.5m) continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona.

Also, in goal, both Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) have competition from new signings Nick Pope (£5.0m) and Sam Johnstone (£4.5m).

Of course, saying that there is more value in defence isn’t news to anyone. So let’s specifically look at midfielders and forwards.

Midfielders and Forwards

Up front, it was a bad season in FPL and the numbers back this. The two best-value forwards – Dennis and Armando Broja – were only there because of a £5.0m starting price, with one departing via relegation and the other returning to parent club Chelsea. Second-best midfielder Conor Gallagher (£6.0m) is also back in west London.

Said Benrahma remains at £6.0m. Although two goals and two assists in the first pair of games quickly saw him gain popularity, it just as swiftly died out. What may have been ignored is that – while colleague Bowen developed into a must-have asset – Benrahma did continue to be fairly productive despite managed minutes.

From Gameweek 19, the Algerian international registered five goals and three assists from 11 starts.

Elsewhere, the tough early fixtures awaiting James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) means that FPL managers may instead focus on Mason Mount (£8.0m), James Maddison (£8.0m) and one of Brentford’s forwards.

Points per million per game is, of course, a basic route into FPL team value.

We can’t just create a team of FPL assets based on ‘PPGP£M’ as we’ll inevitably end up with a huge wad of unused cash in the bank, due to the fact that Salah, Kane et al will struggle to feature in the above tables. Value Over Replacement Player (VORP) takes this to the next level and is something that has been written about at length by our clued-up community over the years.

But it’s a decent starting point for making a rudimentary comparison of, say, two players of the same position and price: Robertson and Cancelo, for example.

No Haaland or Kane bad idea?

    Alisson,
    Chilwell, Perisic, Cancelo, TAA
    Salah, Mahrez, Olise
    Jesus, C Vardy, Johnson

    Hendo, Neco, Neto, Andreas

In my opinion, a one premium structure requires an even balance of strength and reliability throughout the entire 11. There are too many question marks/punts in this team for me so it's not one I would consider.

Is Eriksen a good option at £6.5m? Surely the best at that price point? Will he be a starter at Man Utd?

Could well be to both questions. We need to see how he fits in with the squad when they get back from their tour. We need to see how he segues with bruno, if he's on set pieces, and if De jong joins.

I think this is where I land given fixtures, and expected points per million.

      Ramsdale
      TAA Robbo Cancelo James Tomiyasu
      Salah Son Coutinho Neto
      Jesus

      Gazzaniga Andreas Greenwood Taylor

      Thoughts?

Personally I would not double on Arsenal GK/DEF.
I'd move Ramsdale to DDG or save 0.5 by going Meslier/Raya - Otherwise make Tomi -> Williams/Patterson and save 0.5.
I'd also go Kane > Son and save 0.5. Not because of the 0.5, but because Kane -> Haaland could be handy sooner rather than later. I also think Richarlison is more of a threat to Sons minutes.
That 1mil could upgrade Coutinho to whatever 8mil mid you like the most.
I know it makes it more 'template', but I still think it is better.

          Thanks for the insights!

I quite like Arsenal double defence based on their fixtures. Willing to take that risk.

I agree my biggest risk is Haaland! Worst comes to it it’s a hit before GW2 to bring him in

I don’t mind Arsenal D for GWs 3-4 but I think they’ll concede at least twice in the opening two GWs. Personally, I’m having a bet on Palace to beat them opening night.

So, I think I've found my team. Any comments on this?
        Going for a 5-4-1

        Pope l 4.0m
        TAA l VVD l Cancelo l Cash l Perisic
        Salah l Sancho l Sako l Wilson l 4.5m
        Kane l 4.5m l 4.5m

I can easily swap Kane for Haaland.
Sako/Sancho is also an easy swap to one of the other 8.0m players

5-4-1. No flexibility. They wont be getting clean sheets week in week out, people going BATB will get frustrated quick

Looks great. The highest price points in defence & in attack so flexible enough. Personally I'd never go with 2x 4.5 attackers in case there's an issue with Kane. I'd consider Saka -> Martinelli & 4.5 fwd -> Johnson. This leaves you with 0.5 itb for a potential Perisic -> CHE def move. Best of luck.

The one forward I would take a risk with is Kane. He's a 38GW 90min player. If he gets injured, you just transfer him out for any forward in the game.

I think the 8m midfield slot is the most important as there are so many good players there. Might be difficult to move funds from defence.

I like the Kane pick and it allows easy jump to Haaland if necessary.

The 2-3 at home was a weird game, just conceded a couple of really sloppy goals at the end with terrible marking from JWP crosses. But it was still quite an open game, compared to, say, Burnley / Brighton

Generally speaking, I think Spurs still lack the creativity in central midfield to unlock teams sitting deep & denying Son space in behind. But they thrive on fast transitions with Kane dropping off & playing Son in. Everton & Newcastle tried to press them & got battered

This article further supports my suspicions that Dias and Laporte are better picks than Cancelo, and treble Liverpool defence is the best way to maximise budget.
                Alisson (186)
                TAA (247), Robertson (244), Dias (185), Laporte (184), Tierney (183)
                Saka, Rashford
                Kane, Haaland, Jesus

Spending £37.0m on that backline would score a whopping 1229 points if they all play the whole season. Obvious Tierney wouldn't stay fit all season so using Gabriel (159) instead would give you 1205 points. If you use a fodder bench (£17.5m) then you have £45.5m to spend on the other 5 outfield starting players, allowing multiple premiums.

Using the PPG£m figures in the article x start price x 38 matches.
                      So TTA is 0.867 x 7.5 x 38 = 247.095

Got it. Yeah I think you're on to something here. Value is totally dominated by defenders, and theres no reason to think City & Pool won't crush the top defenders list again.

I guess the main counterpoint is that mids around the same price (6-7.5) are used differently, rotated in/out by fixtures/form, which gives you a chance to gain an edge on set & forget defenders. Will look into it further. Likely to more drawn to CBs after 1st WC with UCL rotation anyway. Keeping an eye on Konate in particular

Although it is unrealistic for me to expect them to play all 38 matches. Even Alisson missed two games last season so it is probably more accurate to adjust the total points figure to factor in around 6 games missed per player (32/38) giving a total of around 1030 points. Still a very encouraging amount for £37.0m

I acknowledge the lack of Chelsea defence coverage is a potential issue, however his is really simple to fix as James/Chilwell are the same price as Dias/Laporte.

I could even downgrade Saka to £7.0m mid (Grealish) to upgrade Tierney/Gabriel to a James/Chilwell.

The other lesson of the article is forwards offer poor value yet this draft is spending serious money there - I'd be sticking with no more than 2 up front + fodder and spending more in midfield also?

I interpreted it as midfield is now the worst area for value as all the over-preforming players got massive price rises for example Bowen and Son both +£2.0m.

The main take away was to pump money into GK + Def meaning spending at least £35m here.
I await the next decent article regarding how best to spread the fund over Mid + Forwards.

I think Salah ownership is the only thing you and I differ on.
My stance is switching captain between Haaland + Kane (whoever is playing against the weakest defence that GW) is potentially a better use of captain than perma-Salah.

I'm not considering perma-captaining him; he'd share the armband with my other premium (currently on Haaland). 50% of GWs amounts to 150 points, which is less than one of those 3 defenders/keeper will get, but the key is - will Haaland or Kane/Son match those 150 captain points? My current view is Salah does it every year whereas we don't currently know how Haaland will do. If Haaland looks like taking the armband the bulk of the time early on, I might transferout Salah.

It probably balances out overall. The difference between those 150 captain points, with the captain points Kane/Haaland score is probably mitigated by the extra points you score from triple Liverpool defence.
Swings and roundabouts. Six of one and half a dozen of the other.
Both strategies are equally sound in logic.

Ah come on. A five-man defense with 0 Liverpool options. Also, there are no guarantees of those Spurs defenders playing week in and week out.

Aren't Doherty and Perisic competing against each other, or is Perisic purely left-sided?

i think James and Chilwell in one team is risky, both has history of injury, maybe pick one and Doherty's minute is doubtful, I won't go with these 5

I'll go with James or Chilwell, Laporte, Perisic, VVD, and one 4.5 or 4.0, maybe Neco or Tomi, the usual suspect

Reports are suggesting Doherty has told he's free to leave Spurs. Conte been seen arguing / telling him off during an opening training session in Seoul.

Big fan of Callum Wilson being a cool 4.0%TSB with those 2 opening fixtures. Easy switch to Jesus/Toney in GW3 depending on form. Good price point aswell

Assuming just players from Liverpool, Arsenal, Leeds, Wolves, Villa + Newcastle (avoid City away to WHU?).

i once think of Wilson too but then maybe Bruno G at 6.0 is the better pick cause it's cheaper and it's easy to switch to Martinelli cause Toney is doubtful to be explosive this season and Jesus is mostly best pick to start

You considered BB in the week after world cup restart? As it's not classed as a WC you can essentially do what you're doing in GW1 with the extra team value/known cheap options etc. I'll almost certainly be doing it.

I did BB GW1 last year and really enjoyed it. I particularly enjoyed the not having to think about it for the rest of the season bit. Tsimikas was a great enabler for it if I remember.

Yeah but that still leaves me with funds on my bench and I dont want that. It takes trades to reduce the funds on bench and Im not keen.

                                            What's your BB team Christina?

I'm going down the same path for the first time.

                                            Atm thinking the following:

                                            Lloris
                                            TAA Cancelo Justin Botman
                                            Salah Maddison Neto Giumaraes
                                            Kane Wilson

If Sterling, Mount, Foden, Rashford are nailed with their minutes, of course it's a great pick, but the uncertainty among those 4 is high
I mean, if I want to gamble, I think 2 out of 4 is max and in this case, I'll go with Mount and Rashford and drop Raz and Foden too

Like, it’s not the worst i’ve seen, but you could easily find yourself in a position were you genuinely only have 1 starting midfielder. Like if 4 from those 5 were benched in a given week i would not be surprised

on my radar but since he's not getting any younger and I don't trust Villa that high so maybe at his price point, I kinda lean toward Sancho or Rashford more

In the 6-7 Mids range - JWP Benrahma Coutinho Eriksen. At what estimated total scores are we looking at?
                            JWP- 150
                            Benrahma- 140

                            Eriksen- 150ish ?

Cannot say really at this stage, his PPM from last season is one of the best at that price range.
I’d say he has the highest ceiling too, but he’s either hot or cold.

Fitness is an issue though as he hasn't played a full season for many years. 175 looks too high to me, but I think he could be decent in short bursts against weaker sides

JWP is a banker for 150 year in year out. Eriksen at Utd more of an enigma. Benrahma hmm, he's ok, but Bowen is such a class above that its probably him or nothing for me from WH

After reading this article and the VORP one, I'm considering a one premium team (Salah).
I will happily captain him in the first 7/8 so is it worth having the second premium when they won't be captained?

Injuries and to cover if Salah blanks as unlikely as that is.

I personally have Salah, Son and TAA as my premiums.

Fair enough. Although, if he gets injured he'll just go straight out for Son/KDB.
If he doesn't get any mins, would probably be happy with TAA as a vice.
                            Something to think about.

yes I think 2 premium is needed because if Salah is proven dull this season and Kane and Haaland is firing, it's hard for you to jump ship and I don't see Salah is worth perma-captain anyway, for instance GW2 and 3 could be Haaland

The structure I favor is one premium but with Haaland rather than Salah. I'm aware of the risk involved in that but a combination of my confidence in Haaland, the 1.5m saving from Salah, and the pure strength of the rest of my team is just too appealing. I reckon it's worth going for. Had a flutter with different premium players in the same approach, as well as two and three premium setups, but always run into issues of some sort and just hit reset and land back on the same squad and log out 😆

                              Wow, ballsy!
A lot of pressure to perform from the off. Not worried about a settling in period/minutes?

I could end up with egg on my face but I don't foresee any issues with settling in or consistency of starts, to be honest. The one and only concern I have is his injury record. It's alarming, to say the least, but I feel like Guardiola will manage his minutes in-game as well as he can given the overall strength of their forwards.

Yeah I tried to list out just the differences but it’s hard to give context to bench and rest of team/shape

Happy Saturday my fellow FF addictives.

                            What’s wrong with this draft?

                            Ramsdale/Olsen.
TAA, James, Tripper, Tomiyasu, N Williams.
Neto, Bruno G, Mount, Salah, Son.
                            Broja, Johnson, Jesus.

Just missing a City defender really

                                Cheers!

TAA to Cancelo and then I could upgrade Johnson to Mitrovic?

Id keep Johnson over MItrovic tbh

Depends what formation you wanna play, dropping Broja and Neto to 4.5 fwd and Pereira for instance gives you 2m to go Trippier to Cancelo

Ideally I would like to keep a playing bench if possible, just a bit more flexibility that way but Trippier to cancelo is tempting.

Or Laporte/Dias and keep one of the 5.5s

too light on def and fwd for my picking
i think TAA to VVD and pick one of Son or Salah can net you a better team

I’m very reluctant to part with either Salah or Son tbh as they are bankers to rack up points.

I wouldn’t be so opposed to downgrading TAA to Dias and using the 1.5 to upgrade the forward line but I don’t see much value in the 7-7.5 strikers.

Do you plan to play 4-5-1?

Oh defo 4-5-1 is the plan. My thinking was that Williams and Johnson will be starters for forest so good auto subs and I am banking on Broja moving to another PL side to get minutes.

                            Kane | Haaland | Jesus

That back 5 and front 3, Jesus that’s impressive.

Tierney a no for me and Bailey is pony so you basically have one kid in Salah.

My sense is Gerard likes Bailey and If (and I admit it’s an if) he stays fit there might be some value at 5m

                                Why no Tierney love?

As a player Tierney is a machine but he has glass legs unfortunately, if he stays fit then it’s a great pick :).

I’m not sure how much Bailey is but surely there is a better option who is nailed?

Sorry seen you put he’s 5 mil, then maybe worth a punt. Elanga is 5 mil if he gets minutes under Ten Hag pre season.
