For students of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) statistics, the recent price reveals have enabled them to delve deep into finding new ways to perfect their Gameweek 1 squads.

Here, we will combine two popular stats into one number.

Points-per-gameA player’s total FPL points are divided by their number of appearances.
ValueA player’s total FPL points are divided by price. In this case, starting prices.

This should help optimise the £100m budget beyond premium assets like Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Son Heung-min (£12.0m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Harry Kane (£11.5m).

Although a golden piece of FPL wisdom usually advises managers to look forward, rather than chase past points, let’s try to determine which 2022/23 players offer the best value based on their 2021/22 performances.

Last season’s PPG Value

Using last season‘s starting prices and the data from our Premium Members Area, these are the players with the best points-per-game-per-million (PPGP£m) scores in 2021/22:

For example, Joel Matip (£6.0m) took part in 31 matches and totalled 170 points – a rate of 5.484 per game. Divide this by his £5.0m starting price and he’s the only player to exceed 1.00 for PPG Value. It’s no surprise to see Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) right at the top too, whilst Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t held back by a £7.5m price.

On the left are those who played over 1,800 league minutes. By raising this to 2,052 minutes (60% of the possible 3,420), the likes of Reece James (£6.0m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) are removed, as seen on the right.

This is unlucky on Ben Chilwell (£6.0m), who would likely take Marcos Alonso‘s (£5.5m) place on the list had he not suffered a serious injury. Until then, his six outings brought in three goals, three clean sheets and a whopping 54 points.

We can already see defensive domination, with three £4.5m goalkeepers sitting inside the top eight. Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m) and Emmanuel Dennis (£5.0m) are the only attackers to reach the upper section.

Changes for 2022/23

This only intensifies now that the upcoming season’s prices have been released. Bargain attackers from last year such as Bowen, James Maddison (£8.0m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) have had a steep increase in outlay, with Diogo Jota (£9.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.0m) amongst those to now be categorised as forwards rather than midfielders.

Furthermore, many of last year’s players have been lost to relegation or transfers abroad, affecting the likes of Dennis, Antonio Rudiger and Sadio Mane.

Another mitigating factor is that Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Richarlison (£8.5m) have switched Premier League clubs over the summer. Whereas Jesus has left a squad role at Manchester City to likely become the focal point at Arsenal, the reverse is probably happening to Richarlison. For them, the last campaign’s points-per-game data is therefore irrelevant.

This season’s PPG Value

Now we take a look at PPMG£m using this year’s prices.

Matip’s numbers were so strong that the subsequent £1m rise hasn’t knocked him down, although it’s a surprise to see Tierney so high. His 22 starts brought 11 clean sheets and four attacking returns but he was overshadowed by much-owned teammate Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m).

Once those under 60% playing time are removed, it leaves a trio of Liverpool names on top. A big talking point of price reveals was the drop of goalkeeper Alisson from £6.0m to £5.5m, who now offers a genuine budget-saving supplement to Alexander-Arnold or Robertson.

A handful of these leading names are likely to remain avoided. Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) couldn’t reach 2,052 minutes and that’s before Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) arrived, whilst Marcos Alonso (£5.5m) continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona.

Also, in goal, both Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) have competition from new signings Nick Pope (£5.0m) and Sam Johnstone (£4.5m).

Of course, saying that there is more value in defence isn’t news to anyone. So let’s specifically look at midfielders and forwards.

Midfielders and Forwards

Up front, it was a bad season in FPL and the numbers back this. The two best-value forwards – Dennis and Armando Broja – were only there because of a £5.0m starting price, with one departing via relegation and the other returning to parent club Chelsea. Second-best midfielder Conor Gallagher (£6.0m) is also back in west London.

Said Benrahma remains at £6.0m. Although two goals and two assists in the first pair of games quickly saw him gain popularity, it just as swiftly died out. What may have been ignored is that – while colleague Bowen developed into a must-have asset – Benrahma did continue to be fairly productive despite managed minutes.

From Gameweek 19, the Algerian international registered five goals and three assists from 11 starts.

Elsewhere, the tough early fixtures awaiting James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) means that FPL managers may instead focus on Mason Mount (£8.0m), James Maddison (£8.0m) and one of Brentford’s forwards.

Points per million per game is, of course, a basic route into FPL team value.

We can’t just create a team of FPL assets based on ‘PPGP£M’ as we’ll inevitably end up with a huge wad of unused cash in the bank, due to the fact that Salah, Kane et al will struggle to feature in the above tables. Value Over Replacement Player (VORP) takes this to the next level and is something that has been written about at length by our clued-up community over the years.

But it’s a decent starting point for making a rudimentary comparison of, say, two players of the same position and price: Robertson and Cancelo, for example.

Nunez could drift to the left and how long is Jota out for.

I would love Diaz as he’s one of my favourite players to watch but I can’t have an 8 mil player who’s got that much competition

I've seen some here advocate only making drafts / setting up their FPL account in the last week before the season starts because of this. I've kept an open mind and left myself open to changing effectively anyone in my team for the right reasons but I know it can be easy to feel settled with a side and try to not change it so I get it. That being said, by being less defined over players I have, I've actually been a lot more settled with my team this time around and have barely changed anything

    TAA Dias Perisic Tomiyasu 4.0

    Diaz Neto Martinelli Son 4.5

    Kane Haaland 4.5

Its tough, on one hand Diaz could offer a real alternative that enables you to have more funds in other areas. However when salah hauls and he’s in 75% of teams it hurts.

Probably a cleaner way of asking my previous question, would appreciate some opinions please:

    A) Jesus | Mitrovic | 4.5 def — Bench: 4.5 def & Pereira

    B) Coutinho | Mitrovic | Perisic — Bench: 4.5 def & 4.5 fwd

    C) Jesus | Coutinho | 4.5 def — Bench: 4.0 def & 4.5 fwd

Have Neco in all options, so C) would be 2 x 4.0 def

Great way to get off to a flying start and capitalise on early bandwagons / price increases.
The World Cup free transfer period makes this strategy even more appealing as not as long to go with out a wildcard.

          Fair point.

            Preaching to the wrong person.
My inlaws live in Munich, so I’ve watched a fair bit of Bundesliga football.
Haaland is a beast. I think with all of City’s creativity feeding him, he has the potential to break all sorts of records.

Only ? for me is his fitness, but that’s an easy jump off of he gets injured - either to Kane (if you don’t go both), or 2 transfers to get to a MID Premium.

            I’ll be starting with Haaland.
My main decision now is whether to partner him with Salah, Kane or a very balanced/strong team with just him as Premium.

Don’t get me wrong I can’t wait to watch him and I hope I’m wrong and he takes to the PL to a duck like water.

I just can’t bring myself to have him in GW1, need to see how the first few weeks go.

For me it seems logical going with Kane and KDB saving 1m and they make a decent rotation captaining a home player with good fixtures every week. Salah and Kane isn't as tempting because in the GWs where you'd captain Kane then Salah is also captainable, and I'd want a City captain option.

In all honesty this years fantasy is literally the hardest. I genuinely think KDB is being overlooked massively.

KDB, Salah, Kane, Son, Haaland ............

A certain CR7 still looming around too, 36 goals in 44 apps last season for a poor united in all competitions.

        Get me a beer.

    Koulibaly a downgrade on Rudiger.

Played well in Italy in a slow league where his physical attributes gave him a significant edge (see, for example, Lukaku in Serie A vs PL). The PL won't be easy and from what I have seen of him, he ain't got a high level of football intelligence.

As per a report by Sam Lee of the Athletic, sources close to Phil Foden have suggested that he would like to operate on the right-hand side of a front three in the 2022/23 season.

      Bowen for me.

Mahrez is great and in any other team but won't get the minutes.

It's tricky to get his purple patch. Need to plan it around Champions League and international competitions.

I was stunned to see upon his new contract signing that Mahrez is 31 years old, for some reason I still thought he was in his late twenties! I think that certifies even further in my head that he won't be first choice again, especially with the pressing that the likes of Foden offer

    Hi...thoughts on perisic for gw1?

He hasn't played at all for spurs due to injury

If he starts the final pre season, will this be enough to include him gw1? Torn over this one

    Ederson

    Salah Diaz

Kane personally as he’s PL proven, easy switch to Haaland if he explodes.

Why do we think the average number of premiums in teams increased this year so far?

Just more good options? What happened to the view that premiums needs to be captained to be worth it?

    1. LoneWolf1989
      • 4 Years

I think it’s due to the lack of decent mid price options, personally I would rather stack my team with the Salah, Sons and TAAs as they deliver 9 times out of 10

Arrival of Håland, and Conte's boosting of Son/Kane prospects. Still need to cap them for value, true, that's why I'm sticking with 2 premiums & taking the risk of leaving out Salah

I'm quite happy to comment on this forum from a handheld device.

Are the views and scrolling too limited on a mobile phone?

xGI mostly, but I do dive a bit deeper, e.g. been looking at shots conceded outside the box in assessing cheap GK, and some of the value indicators in the above article. Used Kane's increased shot volume to hop on at the right time last year. Often look at where/which side teams concede chances.

I’ve realised the main problem I’m having picking a team is that there are no mids that really appeal to me between Neto at 5.5 and the 8.0m bracket. Sinisterra is the best of the bunch for now I reckon and I’m not overly taken with him. Possibly Martinelli but minutes uncertain for him.

    1. LoneWolf1989

      Agreed, it’s pretty derelict.

I have Neto and Bruno G but the rest of the 5.5-7.5 bracket is pretty weak imo.

He will be a frustrating one and a bit of a tease, can see him having a few good games where he bags double figures and then goes 3/4 games with 2 points.

Well, one way of doing it is lining up the players by price and looking for the classy attacking player who will play enough minutes. For example, my take on it for midfielders is:

      £5.5m: Olise
£6.0m: Smith-Rowe (although don't think the 6.0m are that good overall)
      £6.5m: JWP
      £7m - £7.5m: Zaha
      £8m - £8.5m: Diaz

Those 8m midfielders are very good players IMO. But most are priced on having good seasons LTO. And last season's bargains are rarely next season's bargains. Diaz seems underpriced because Mane (his direct competition) has left.

      2. Fletch69

JWP is a great pick at £6.5. 150+ points 2 years in a row and being the only decent Saints player means he takes all the penalties, free kicks, corners, gets all the bonuses etc so don't see that changing.

I don't like anyone else less than him though. Barnes and Zaha (if he stays) are reasonable picks at £7m I think

        1. Mr. O'Connell
          • 13 Years

Opening fixtures and essentially having 2 wildcards in the first half of the season probably means JWP can wait tho.

At 7 I don’t mind Barnes. Plays every game, most assists in the prem this calendar year, plays in a dangerous attack.

Barnes could happily match Maddison numbers I think. He could even play further forward this year now that Vardy has got his bus pass....

I feel like I’d almost certainly got for Robbo, TAA and Diaz if I went without Salah, but otherwise I like it.

Part of the issue is what I posted above, if you move Mount and a defender out to Robbo and a sub 8m mid, there is basically no one attractive in that bracket. At least for now.

The lack of 4.5m playing forwards does make playing 2 or 3 up front more appealing. At least in defence you have N.Williams and in midfield Reed, Andreas and Dasilva.

      1. Fletch69
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

I agree with that, I wanted to go with one up top but having 2 non-playing forwards on the bench is very risky.

So you either end up with a load of money on the bench or going 2 up top.

I think i've cracked it. Perfect No Mo team. Feel free to copy it, of course if you are brave enough to go without Salah.

      Ederson
      TAA, Robertson, Chillwell, Tomiyasu
      Diaz, Saka, Neto, Bruno G
      Kane, Haaland

      Steele, Mitrovic, Neco, Andreas

Bruno and Mitro rotate quite nicely, as well as Kane& Haaland on captaincy options.
Diaz, TAA and Robbo are probably best "cover" Salah options you can get.
