For students of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) statistics, the recent price reveals have enabled them to delve deep into finding new ways to perfect their Gameweek 1 squads.

Here, we will combine two popular stats into one number.

Points-per-gameA player’s total FPL points are divided by their number of appearances.
ValueA player’s total FPL points are divided by price. In this case, starting prices.

This should help optimise the £100m budget beyond premium assets like Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Son Heung-min (£12.0m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Harry Kane (£11.5m).

Although a golden piece of FPL wisdom usually advises managers to look forward, rather than chase past points, let’s try to determine which 2022/23 players offer the best value based on their 2021/22 performances.

Last season’s PPG Value

Using last season‘s starting prices and the data from our Premium Members Area, these are the players with the best points-per-game-per-million (PPGP£m) scores in 2021/22:

For example, Joel Matip (£6.0m) took part in 31 matches and totalled 170 points – a rate of 5.484 per game. Divide this by his £5.0m starting price and he’s the only player to exceed 1.00 for PPG Value. It’s no surprise to see Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) right at the top too, whilst Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t held back by a £7.5m price.

On the left are those who played over 1,800 league minutes. By raising this to 2,052 minutes (60% of the possible 3,420), the likes of Reece James (£6.0m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) are removed, as seen on the right.

This is unlucky on Ben Chilwell (£6.0m), who would likely take Marcos Alonso‘s (£5.5m) place on the list had he not suffered a serious injury. Until then, his six outings brought in three goals, three clean sheets and a whopping 54 points.

We can already see defensive domination, with three £4.5m goalkeepers sitting inside the top eight. Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m) and Emmanuel Dennis (£5.0m) are the only attackers to reach the upper section.

Changes for 2022/23

This only intensifies now that the upcoming season’s prices have been released. Bargain attackers from last year such as Bowen, James Maddison (£8.0m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) have had a steep increase in outlay, with Diogo Jota (£9.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.0m) amongst those to now be categorised as forwards rather than midfielders.

Furthermore, many of last year’s players have been lost to relegation or transfers abroad, affecting the likes of Dennis, Antonio Rudiger and Sadio Mane.

Another mitigating factor is that Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Richarlison (£8.5m) have switched Premier League clubs over the summer. Whereas Jesus has left a squad role at Manchester City to likely become the focal point at Arsenal, the reverse is probably happening to Richarlison. For them, the last campaign’s points-per-game data is therefore irrelevant.

This season’s PPG Value

Now we take a look at PPMG£m using this year’s prices.

Matip’s numbers were so strong that the subsequent £1m rise hasn’t knocked him down, although it’s a surprise to see Tierney so high. His 22 starts brought 11 clean sheets and four attacking returns but he was overshadowed by much-owned teammate Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m).

Once those under 60% playing time are removed, it leaves a trio of Liverpool names on top. A big talking point of price reveals was the drop of goalkeeper Alisson from £6.0m to £5.5m, who now offers a genuine budget-saving supplement to Alexander-Arnold or Robertson.

A handful of these leading names are likely to remain avoided. Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) couldn’t reach 2,052 minutes and that’s before Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) arrived, whilst Marcos Alonso (£5.5m) continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona.

Also, in goal, both Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) have competition from new signings Nick Pope (£5.0m) and Sam Johnstone (£4.5m).

Of course, saying that there is more value in defence isn’t news to anyone. So let’s specifically look at midfielders and forwards.

Midfielders and Forwards

Up front, it was a bad season in FPL and the numbers back this. The two best-value forwards – Dennis and Armando Broja – were only there because of a £5.0m starting price, with one departing via relegation and the other returning to parent club Chelsea. Second-best midfielder Conor Gallagher (£6.0m) is also back in west London.

Said Benrahma remains at £6.0m. Although two goals and two assists in the first pair of games quickly saw him gain popularity, it just as swiftly died out. What may have been ignored is that – while colleague Bowen developed into a must-have asset – Benrahma did continue to be fairly productive despite managed minutes.

From Gameweek 19, the Algerian international registered five goals and three assists from 11 starts.

Elsewhere, the tough early fixtures awaiting James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) means that FPL managers may instead focus on Mason Mount (£8.0m), James Maddison (£8.0m) and one of Brentford’s forwards.

Points per million per game is, of course, a basic route into FPL team value.

We can’t just create a team of FPL assets based on ‘PPGP£M’ as we’ll inevitably end up with a huge wad of unused cash in the bank, due to the fact that Salah, Kane et al will struggle to feature in the above tables. Value Over Replacement Player (VORP) takes this to the next level and is something that has been written about at length by our clued-up community over the years.

But it’s a decent starting point for making a rudimentary comparison of, say, two players of the same position and price: Robertson and Cancelo, for example.

Cash and Digne are both decent options for the opening weeks. Cash more likely to score
but Digne more likely to assist. What's putting me off Cash is the high ownership which could lead to an early drop.

Would be shocked if this conversion sticks, he doesn't seem to have the right attributes.

I think it's more likely just tinkering and being very safe with injuries / fatigue.

Amber list = players who are fatigued and should be rotated. I'm saying the other RWBs are probably there due to it being early in pre season and Conte reportedly beating them. Which would explain Lucas starting

Alright then I'll figure out this BB1/2WC3 strategy myself.
      - So you want defenders playing against worst attacks in opening 2 GWs: Newcastle, Man Utd, Liverpool, Wolves, Villa and Leeds.
      - Equally you want attackers playing against the worst defences: Liverpool, Villa, Wolves, Man Utd.
      - You will have one free transfer to use on upside chasing / optimum captain pick: Kane > Haaland.
      - All 15 players play one week (either GW 1 or 2) and 11 players the other week, so you can choose 4 player focusing on one fixture only: BB1 then bench Leicester GW2. or bench Southampton/WHU GW1 then BB GW2.
      - Select mainly Haaland for GW2 Bench-Boost:
      Ramsdale*, Pope
      Robertson, VVD, Digne, Trippier, Dalot/Ait-Nouri
      Fernandes, Diaz, Rashford, Neto, Bailey
      Haaland(C), Jesus, Watkins

*Maybe change to a £4.5m to leave £0.5m ITB for GW3 wildcard (potential price rises on bandwagon players).

You've worked hard to get this out!
I'd say you've got the basics of a great plan there.
I might stick in Peresic and Mahrez for excitement and risk Undav to afford them - he'll score v that United defence easy 😉

I kind of agree though. This works with a bench boost and an early wildcard.

For first 2 weeks only, this could work:

                Pope 5.0 Meslier 4.5
                Robbo 7.0 VVD 6.5 Peresic 5.5 Trippier 5,0 Digne 5.0

Don’t forget your free transfer doesn’t carry over after WC so might as well use it on a planned post-GW1 transfer.

Repost half the text disappeared. BB1/2WC3 strategy.

Surely Ederson every week and a £4m sub is a better bet and £0.5m less than Ramsdale and Pope rotating?

City have a better clean sheet potential regardless of who they play?

It will only be another 13 matches until the WC free transfers period. I think 13 free transfers and the odd -4 hit is more than enough to safely navigate this period.

Spanner in the works time by a Spurs fan, nothing but my opinion here...

With Doherty on the end of several lectures from Conte on the pre-season tour of South Korea and rumoured by several news outlets to be told he's free to leave...Kulusevski can play RWB, which people forget.

      Lloris
      Perisic Romero Dier Lenglet Kulusevski
      Bentacur Bissouma
      Richarlison (Maddison) Son
      Kane

Talks of Maddison joining Spurs, if he doesn't it would probably be 3 in the middle with the likes of Hoijberg/Skipp getting game time. Could be completley wrong here, but after gameweek1 would this make Richarlison more appealing?

Haha, nicely noticed, the Maddison talks have thrown me. Too many options for spurs this season.

The point I'm trying to make is i wonder if Kulu will be RWB at times this season. And if that makes Richarlison more appealing?

Speculative but plausible. Tbh I don't feel I have a solid grasp of what Richarlison's role will be. Making things easy for myself by picking Son

Is a good reason to not pick him in a season long draft. Atm vardy is first name on the teamsheet and gets returms in realm of kane for 9.5 at home against BRE and SOU and a trip to inconsistent arsenal

Not sure i rate the double up on arsenal defence if you do play a 5-3-2. Id be inclined to get Meslier over Ramsdale and either hold the 0.5 or yoink one of neto or bailey up.

Don't like no salah but you've got the right strategy in covering the assists as much as possible with taa robbo and diaz

Tripping having bailey. Don't fall for the pre season trap. Ignore all pre season form it's meaningless. Bailey would have to keep both ings (highest earner) and buendia (villas best attacker) out of the team to be an option. Not gonna happen. Gerrard is no doubt hoping he can become a useful squad member for rotation

Due to budgetary constraints (wife ill and I am FT carer) I can't subscribe this season, but still love all the chat on here, great site.

OK, please critique this thoughtful draft and yes it is Haalandless!

      Mendy (Guaita)
TAA, Cancelo, James, Perisic (N Williams)
Salah, Kulusevski, Bruni Guimaraes, Martinelli (Benrahma)
      Darwin, Jeses (Greenwood)

I feel this is solid and attacking option in 10 starting outfield players and great cover on bench in GK, Def and Mid. Greenwood is fodder.

I am using Twitter a lot more this year, so would love to follow/engage with any Vets on here. FPL Dude (Ade) @adeharr

Keep up the great work FFS, I hope I can subscribe next season as been playing Fantasy football since it's original conception in the early 90's.

Love to all, hope you have fun and some great times this season. See you at the Fantasy Fest in waterloo if you are going.

That's a very kind message Kaptain Kane! I will add, I actually won the Fantasy fest tickets randomly on Twitter, so would happily give the 2nd ticket to someone on here (worth £20) who would like to go on 5th August in Waterloo. but that is not the reason. I have some mates who play FF, but they are no where near a 'Nut!' like me. anyway, that is just a thought.

Not bad. Wasting 0.5 on guaita. I don't think darwin will start even if jota injured

he may not start early in the season, but if you have seen him play, he can get 2 goals coming on in the 60th minute, he reads the game so well. I am happy if he is the differential in my team. He is currently on 11.6% TSB, I'd like to see that figure by GW3!! 🙂

Nice i like it. As long as you are aware and still fancy him.
Jota was a cert for my team but injured now

        Guaita No
        Kulu No
        BrunoG No
        Martinelli No
        Benrahma No
        Darwin No

So much wasted coin on your bench and so many better options. Don't mean to be harsh but it's one of the worst drafts i've seen personally but the good news is you've got 3 weeks before the start of the season. Each to their own though, good luck to you!

Hey, the reason I asked to be criticised, is to get feedback, so not harsh in the slightest. I'd like to see the 6 you would replace them with 🙂

When you have Mendy in goal a 4.0m goalkeeper is just the way to go, especially with the forced wildcard before gameweek 16, ideally around gameweek8.

Kulu is too much at risk for minutes, feels like you're just trying to force a spurs player in, and at that 8m price point there are so many better options ... Diaz, Mahrez, Saka, Maddison, Mount...

BrunoG had a good season when he came last year, but if you look at his history he's just not going to sustain them levels despite newcastle being on the upward trajectory...Neto, Gordon, Wissa all better options AND cheaper.

I don't mind having one of Martinelli or Benrahma just not both when one is on you're bench, move one of them to the 4.5 Andreas.

Darwin is a very much unknown, I'd get Diaz over Kulusevski and Jesus over Darwin...and you'll find yourself some nice extra cash in the bank to tinker with.

            Good luck

              Good constructive Criticism, 🙂

I have always liked good back up on bench, but that may be a downfall??

Kulu is for GW1 against Saints, already planned Kulu to Mahrez for GW2 at home to Bournemouth, can't have Diaz as I have 3 x LFC...plus he looked short of pace in fist to LFC friendlies I watched in full.

Bruno G maybe a gamble, but one I am willing to take at Home to Forest!

Benrahma will rotate with Martinelli depending on fixture, again GW strategy planned way ahead in advance.

Nüńez is unknown in prem, but fits the LFC model so well. watching the minutes he played in pre-season so far, his positioning on the last defender is 100%, his reading of the game is insanely good and with Robertson, TAA, Salah and Thiago being able to pinpoint him hanging on the last defenders shoulders only means 25+ goals to me this season. Does Klopp get it wrong often?

100% thank you for the comments, I need to them to justify my team like this, or make changes!

      This is sound logic right?
High owned players like TAA, Cancelo, James and Haaland are more likely to have early price drops than price rises?
So not starting with them isn’t much of a risk because you should be able to transfer them in easily.

If the aim of the game is to get the highest team value the logic would be soumd. Its not though it's to score points

I’m thinking in terms of attacking first two game weeks only. Aiming to score the most points early doors then wildcarding for a more settled midterm team.

I don't really look past first 4 gameweeks myself. Played for over ten years and always wildcarded by gw5. The ratiomale being i accept that these gameweek 1 squads are a complete lottery. Once I've digest 80 or so league games i can then make a much more informed decision on who to get. Tactic served me well always finished between top 100 and top 35k

Still you should pick the players you think will score most points. I completely ignore ownership all season

I get your point on pricing, but doesn't normally work out that way unless one asset has a collapse in first few GW's. due to my own team, above, I hope Haaland is the one to collapse! 🙂 then I can get him on the cheap in my WC in GW6

Not if they score which is more likely than not so double whammy of paying more and not getting week 1 points. So taking a huge risk with such a strategy

Haaland if already 63% so even if he scores it would take a massive influx of transfers t for him to rise. Also, Factor in the number of people who will just create a team then never touch it again.

Great point. How I love the debate pre-season, literally, GW1 could kill/maim or make some managers seasons LOL.
I am so excited, more this season than ever, and that is saying something..

Any changes needed on this differential draft?

      Meslier
      Trent, Cancelo, Chilwell, N.Williams
      Salah, Maddison, Sinisterra
      Kane, Vardy, Johnson
      (Caballero, Branthwaite, Lavia, Andreas)
