Next up is Az, who added to his list of top 10k finishes in 2021/22.

Ah, pre-season hype. Of course, a 4-0 drubbing of Liverpool’s reserve squad and a 4-1 victory over Melbourne Victory has got me excited over Manchester United players, who I vowed to avoid just a week ago.

The thing is, with “big at the back”, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Pedro Neto (£5.5m) featuring in almost every draft I see, I am looking for ways in which I can differentiate my squad a little bit.

I always like to have at least 2-3 players who I can get a bit excited about when I watch them play (usually before the crippling disappointment sets in). My first draft video for Fantasy Football Scout over on YouTube for example had me talking up the prospects of Chelsea-bound Raheem Sterling (£10.0m). I’m still very much sold on the new Blues recruit, but of course, when you see what taking out a premium-priced player for the rest of your squad can do, there is temptation.

So, I’ve traded Sterling out for Luis Diaz (£8.0m), who watchers of my “Who is the best £8.0m midfielder” video will know I rated as my top pick in his price bracket. A popular choice on the FFS boards, I’m backing him to have a stellar campaign after his immediate impact when signing for Liverpool in January.

MAN UTD PLAYERS

Using this money, I’ve then been able to upgrade one of my heroes of last season, Bruno Guimarães (£6.0m), who sits in a whopping 20% of all teams at the time of writing. In comes Jadon Sancho (£7.5m). Now I know full well this is off the back of some, quite frankly, meaningless pre-season friendlies. However, when I initially saw his price tag of just £7.5m (a huge £2.0m down from £9.5m last season) my curiosity was piqued. To have any chance of success in the Premier League next season, Erik ten Haag will need to get the absolute best out of Sancho, who managed 38 goals and 51 assists in his time at Borussia Dortmund but struggled in his maiden season in England.

A big factor in my decision as to whether or not to start with Sancho will likely depend on what happens with talismanic figure Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m). Rumours continue to swirl that he isn’t happy at the club, but in truth, it is my belief that his presence in the team negatively impacts the assets around him. If we see Ronaldo depart the club, might we see Anthony Martial (£7.0m) or even Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) lead the line for the Red Devils? If this happens, ten Haag’s new “press high, play aggressively” approach would likely see United’s cut-price attackers back on the radar. However, if Ronaldo sticks around and the team remains glued to feeding the 37-year-old, I fear their assets may be dead weights once again.

I want to see a bright, bold and attacking United side. While Ronaldo’s goals were crucial for Manchester United finishing semi-respectably, my sense is that his general presence in the team hindered those around him. A perfect example of this was the 3-0 win against Spurs last season, in which he scored all three goals. However, United’s general play was really poor, and they simply relied on moments of brilliance from the Portuguese superstar. Looking at Ronaldo’s defensive contributions for example, over the season, he made just two interceptions across all matches (equal with Edinson Cavani who played just 162 minutes). In terms of tackles, Ronaldo’s total of 12 paled to the likes of Diogo Jota (£9.0m; 81), Ivan Toney (£7.0m; 59) and even the likes of Neal Maupay (£6.5m; 31). In fairness to Ronaldo, Spurs forward Harry Kane (£11.5m) didn’t show massive difference in his stats, with just three interceptions and 26 tackles. However, Kane created nearly double the number of chances (49) compared to Ronaldo (26), highlighting the impact he has on the players around him. No player had a better mins/shot than Ronaldo last season (22.3), but it’s likely these will be shared more around the team if he was to drop out, with Sancho (hopefully) reaping the rewards.

Feel like I’m pretty set on this, for now… 😉 thoughts?

    Pickford (Begovic)
    Robbo, Cancelo, Tierney, Cash, Tripps
    Salah, Sancho, Neto (Andreas, DSilva)
    Haaland, Kane (Greenwood)

Any other keeper suggestions at 4.5?

I do worry about Tierney being made of glass but do like a part from that, not bad with those 3 premiums.

Might be tempted to move Tierney and Cash to a couple 4.5s and upgrade one of those mids to a 5.5

Yeah I’m the same. Tbh I did have Neco/Ramsey in for Tierney and DaSilva until this morn, so may go back to that. Just thought the ceiling might be higher with Tierney in those opening games IF he stays fit haha

This would be my preferred threemium, so congrats! Still not convinced spreading the funds is better though, but should be very happy with that if you’re set on threemium.

Having 3 premiums means it shouldn’t be too much of an issue to rectify should I need too.

Never thought a 3mium could look this good. Well done. Personally, I wouldn't go 3mium, but I like your team.

Did you consider Trippier over Gabriel? Newcastle will probably keep 12-15 clean sheets this season, and Trippier has the set pieces. Also, Bruno gets more minutes than Martinelli, but the latter is the more exciting option, albeit with a significant game time concern.

Also like two reliable bench players!

One possible issue could be lack of 8.0m slots in the midfield. You may not want to downgrade your premiums for a 8.0m mid. But, you can't have everything.

A very well thought team, indeed.

I have, but I really like Gabriel for his kind run of opening fixtures and goal threat.

    X - 4.0
    TAA - X - Tomiyasu - X - N Williams

    A) Mendy - Cancelo - Ait-Nori - Diaz - Martial/Toney

Zinchenko + Bailey/Luiz another option if you want both to play. Not necessarily better than Neco + Martinelli, but has the potential to outscore them.

In my opinion, Maddison and Mount are the best picks at this price point. Game time, set piece duties, etc. But I went with Diaz just because Pool.

As the season progresses, one of Foden / Mahrez will emerge as better value, but currently I am not sure who will get more minutes.

Kulusevski is a risk in terms of game time. So, I want to avoid him for now.

I missed Saka above. He could actually outscore any one of the players I mentioned above. Especially if he gets the penalty duties away from Martinelli.

I know right. I have tried several teams with Salah, but have not been able to find the balance.

With a single premium (Salah) I am scared of Haaland.
If I try to get a second premium with Salah, then I am too short of money.

To be honest, this season we have Haaland, so arguably Salah will lose his permanent captaincy, and therefore, not a good value.

        1. Galza

Definitely. Teams will be more varied at the beginning. But, as the season progresses, everyone will converge towards a template. I guess whoever is early on the train, wins!

In my experience, most of the value players emerge in the midfield. I have kept two 8.0m slots to jump on those trains. One of my defenders will also become mids but I don't know which mid yet. So, I am going with the tried/tested.

I think it’s fine. Only slight pickle is it’s going to take 2 fts if you need to get to Son/Salah. For that reason I’d prefer Jesus to Kane and Son/Salah for maybe Mount. I don’t want to tell everyone to go for the template though - you can definitely bet against it and if you like this (I do) you should go with it

      1. banskt
        • 13 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

If I have to buy Salah, then I have to use a WC, which is ok I think for this season. With Salah, I am forced to choose him as captain if I want to maximize my points. Therefore, no point in having 2 premiums. I have to restructure the team and spread the funds, which can only be done with a WC.

I like that I have quality players all over the pitch, no cheap enablers. All of them looks guaranteed to start, except Martinelli. But I like Martinelli and I think he is on penalties. Except Salah, I get the best players from the top 5 teams: Haaland, Kane, Mount,

There is that! My concern with James is that he’s going to get shoved to CB again or be more defensive in a 4-4-2. Chilwell is a better asset imo when fit but yeah, fitness is the worry.

I thought James was the one with niggles and frequent injuries. Play two matches, miss two, play again, sort of confusing...

Chilwell, on the other hand, don't get those niggles and plays for longer stretches. When he gets injured, its like ACL and out for months.

No source, just my suspicions. Strakosha’s been a good keeper in Serie A for a while, and Raya’s been refusing to sign a new contract (think his expires next season), so there’s been rumours that this might be to force his hand a little. Again, no sources atm, but pretty sure I’ve seen it in a few places.

The main thing for me is the fixtures up until the point at which World Cup/unlimited transfers kick in. Also - maybe this is personal bias - I find Brighton assets so frustrating including the way they concede goals. It feels like they never get destroyed but they always concede maybe one or two. I’d rather have a keeper that’s going to concede 4 one week and then keep a CS the next. Mostly the fixtures though.

Yeah if I start with Sanchez this season it will be my 3rd in a row! So Raya would be nice as someone different but not convinced he’s a better pick.

Anything you would change? Could downgrade Martinelli/Rash to upgrade Neco and play 5 at the back for example.

    Sanchez (Steele)
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Tripper (Neco)
    Salah, Diaz, Martinelli, Rashford (Andreas)
    Haaland, Jesus (Greenwood)

Looks good mate. I’m not keen on Rashford but understand the pick given his price. I’d consider changing your 4.5 striker (probably not the advice you were expecting) - I’d prefer one with lower ownership as his value’s likely to hold better but it’s a tiny point.

Pep does try to mould his players into a different position where he can.

Less likely to do that this time, but likes to break them down a bit and impose his style of play on them.

He'll be doing that behind the doors.

The only concern is whether Mahrez starts or Foden starts in that right side role for City? If the Algerian keeps his spot, then it's a no brainer.

      1. Khark

I'm not sure you can wait and see with Pep though. Mahrez bangs you stick him in he's benched. The roulette is real i reckon you gotta back mahrez or don't, no point chasing last weeks points on the roulette wheel

The reason why wait and watch for me is because of my conservative nature at the start of the season. Don't like to take risk especially in gw 1.

xGI delta is showing negative. Which means he underperformed last season. If regressing to mean this season means he will be producing more output.

Pep also usually gives more minutes to the players in their second season.

There are rumours that Foden wants that right side spot too. Which means only Alvarez could be the competition for Grealish.

All hindsight, but we are not looking at past performances, our aim is to maximize future points.

Talks of Toney to West Ham. Does that make Mbuemo a decent budget striker since he'll go onto Penalties and become the main striker?

Not saying he's going to win the golden boot but does give you a point scoring forward for £6m.

Oh, I’d almost definitely get him if Brentford didn’t then sign a replacement but I’m pretty sure they would. Also I can’t really see the deal happening. West Ham usually play with 1 up top and I don’t see either of Toney or Antonio becoming a back up to the other.

Huge lack of budget strikers who play. Don't want to spend on 2 big strikers as got my money in mids and defence.

Johnson or Mbuemo the only options I think for 120+ points at that price but in truth they could both be a complete waste of time....

Justin was template last year and ended up with 0 attacking returns in a terrible defence (injury restricting appearances aside).

It surprised me last year and downright shocks me this year that he's being considered. Am I missing something???

Maybe not Fletch, but all of these RMTs with the same players is getting a bit boring. Just trying to explore alternative options. Leicester without Europe may be a worthwhile punt....?

I scored heavily from the Barnes / Madders combo once the mid-week excursions were done.

As Wild Rover points out they may be more solid if the backline have overcome their injuries...?

This is just sick how everyone's teams consist of top 6 players only.

Where have gone the times when we picked and chased differentials?

Why people ignore players from weaker teams with great potential and fixtures like Aston Villa? Even if it's for 2-3 gws, it's enough to make the difference at the start and then sell.

    1. Herger

      2 reasons:

      1) the pricing
2 the availability of content. Everyone has a podcast these days.

Oh yes, I hate those podcasts and social networks profiles. So many idiots who think they are experts after 2 seasons of playing.

What's the point of playing this if some random man picks everything for you and have strong influence on you?

I have quite a few, people like JWP always get a bonus when Soton win.

But ultimately the best teams have the best players and concede the least goals ...

      1. Dušan Citizen
        • 12 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

Yes, and Villa, for example, face 3 worst defences in first 3 gws and people completely ignore that fact and not pick Watkins, Ramsey, Coutinho, Cash...

I also agree for that, but let's mix it up a little bit for God's sake.

Just caught up on the Leeds Villa game. Leeds lined up like this:

    Meslier
    Kristensen Koch Llorente Davis
    Adams Roca
    James Aaronson Harrison
    Bamford

Really looks like a 4231 to me now, albeit with James & Harrison sitting fairly narrow. Aaronson a very dynamic 10 who tracked back, pressed, and surged into the box.

Bamford doesn't really look ready at all, his touch was way off still.

We could have a 4.0 starter (due to Firpo's injury) as Leif Davis (not yet listed but presumably 4.0) turned in a pretty solid 60mins at LB. Defensively, Leeds actually looked quite decent, although bear in mind Villa don't seem ready to play with quite the intensity Leeds had in the 1st half. Meslier made a few great saves, and looked really pumped in celebrating the pen save - good sign for his confidence. We still got caught outnumbered at the back on a couple of quick breaks though.

Free kicks & corner were shared by Harrison & Aaronson. I'm really starting to get excited by Aaronson now - he instigated all of our best moves (probably best chance being from his through ball to Bamford), looks a total pressing beast (nicked the ball off Chambers in a dangerous position) and his movement off the ball looked very threatening again. At this stage, it looks like FPL have priced Aaronson & Sinisterra the wrong way around. The latter played only 30mins and the game got a bit scrappy by then.

I only have eyes for Leeds 😉

Well, firstly they shifted their whole lineup at half time, and don't really seem quite as ready. Watkins had their best chance with a quick break. Digne looked pretty decent, managed to get a lot more space than Cash & put a few balls into Coutinho in the box. McGinn started to get on top our midfield in the 2nd half. Bailey saw a fair bit of the ball but didnt really threaten. Kamara looks like a rock

Digne is interesting, a lot less ownership than Cash.

Buendia is excellent value at £6m but it looks like Stevie G doesn't want to play him.

Aaronson is interesting though. Maybe needs Bamford to hit form though to get the assists

Aaronson is very interesting seen as though hes priced the same as Neto who's in a lot of drafts including mine

      Nice one!

Is Aaronson a better shout than Neto based on what you have seen. Is there any goal threat there or just assist potential?

Both, it seems. Looked more likely to assist today, and to score against Brisbane. Nothing against Neto pick particularly but I think I feel more confident in Aaronson already

    Meslier (4.0)
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell Trippier (4.0)
    KDB Mahrez Diaz Neto (4.5)
    Kane Jesus (4.5)

All this talk of Kane Haaland Salah and i'm now only rocking 1 of the big 3! Feels so liberating going No Salah i must admit!
