Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

The three newest additions to the Premier League, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth, were all profiled in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off), so we begin our team-by-team guides with Aston Villa.

It was a season of steady progress at Villa Park in 2021/22, with Aston Villa’s 14th-place finish not terrible given the loss of talisman and captain Jack Grealish (£7.0m) shortly before the campaign commenced, plus the change in management midway through.

With Steven Gerrard taking the reins in Gameweek 12, all of the team statistics featured here are from that point onwards.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

Shots on target1238th

From Steven Gerrard’s arrival in Gameweek 12 onwards, Aston Villa ranked seventh overall for goals scored, with 38 in 27 matches.

The all-important underlying attacking statistics, meanwhile, paint the picture of a mid-table Premier League side, which feels okay given that the most expensive FPL option for Villa costs £7.5m.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

On inspection, Villa’s defence actually performed very well under Gerrard, suggesting their backline can offer value when the fixtures fall kindly in 2022/23.

The recent additions of defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara (£5.0m) and centre-half Diego Carlos (£5.0m) could potentially tighten them up further, too.

Gerrard often turned to Douglas Luiz (£5.0m) in the number six role last season, also experimenting with Calum Chambers (£4.5m) and Tim Iroegbunam (£4.5m), but French international Kamara feels like a significant upgrade, which could have a positive impact on Villa’s clean sheet potential.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best mid-price FPL forwards for 2022/23 5

In an appealing opening run, Aston Villa kick start the new season away to newly-promoted Bournemouth, then face Everton and Crystal Palace.

Beyond that, things stiffen up considerably.

In fact, Gerrard’s troops meet four of last season’s top eight between Gameweeks 4 and 7, which includes clashes against West Ham United, Arsenal, champions Manchester City and Leicester City.

However, Gameweek 8 looks like the ideal time to ‘hop on’ their assets, with fixtures against Southampton, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Brentford either side of Chelsea in Gameweek 11.

Been trying to work up the courage to have both Kane and Son over other options. They're looking so reliable right now as anytime Spurs score either one of them or both are involved.

I think starting with two like we did with Bruno + Salah and then shifting to one is the play

I think I agree with this, ultimately. And I think this year it's Salah & Kane to start.

I keep coming back to Son/KDB, but Kane .5 saving and those cheap mids make an extremely strong case

Also, Haaland is also then accessible

the 0.5 and the Haaland watch/swap option is exactly where I landed.

      4.5 keeper
Robbo, Cancelo, James, 4.5 def, Neco
      Salah, Son, Rash, Martinelli, Bailey
      Kane, 4.5, 4.5

Doesn't look too bad (if you think Robbo can match Trent value-wise, 1 forward only gives you Neco as a playing sub, the last 3 mids are all wild punts)

    1. Ser Davos

Saka because that bracket is a mile long

The reality is that forwards have to work really hard and sustain it in order to be viable options

    2. DelPiero10
      4 years, 29 days ago

I went back and forward on this one for a while before finally settling on Jesus. I don't think there's much in it.

      1. DelPiero10
        4 years, 29 days ago

Might help to explain why. I wasn't too happy with 5-4-1 as it left two just Pereira as a backup to my whole team and I'd be down to 10 men if Haaland was to miss out. Saka was a player I had no intention of selling, at least until WC1, so it seemed a logical swap as there's not a lot between the two imo and it allows that extra stability of two sub players and cover for Haaland. Also, in the two potentially tighter fixtures Arsenal has to start the season, I'd back Jesus to pip Saka as he is now the main man and a more experienced forward. From gwk3 I don't have a preference. Jesus it is.

Palace have an outstanding record against Arsenal full stop - only defeat in last 4 seasons came a couple of years back with a couple of injury time goals. Generally a fixture with plenty of goals too and under lights as a season starter I can see goals.

That said the first 8/9 fixtures are so miserable that it's a really bold choice unless you're on BB1 perhaps.

I've got a sensible draft and a stupidly risky draft. Not decided which one to use yet.

                      Haha fair.

I've got numerous screenshots of variations saved but I'll go sensible I think.

The other included a range of risks such as Haaland, Darwin etc which carries alot of reward but too much risk.

Rolling the dice to start. Midfield options look too pricey for returns compared to the attacking and defending options this year

Amazing team, I'm assuming Robinson means Robertson

Maybe Dalot and Aaronson to Williams and Martinelli?

Villa attacker is a must for me, I just don't know who is the most nailed - Watkins, Coutinho or Ings?

      Nailed... watkins
Also probably the worst option of the 3

Yeah, he doesn't look exciting, but could easily bang a brace. Villa face the worst defence in gw 1 and then 2 very bad defences in next 2.

Fools gold imo. Fixtures look good at first glance but take into account villa themselves are pretty average, bournemouth are a solid, defensive, well organised side playing at home in debut premier league game against a very meh villa attack. Palace away is a very tricky fixture too and won't be many goals in it. Wouldn't be surpirsed if villa lose or draw both. Everton at home should be a routine win

Things get dicey for Watkins/Ings I'd Gerrard goes with 1 up top to start the season.

He seems to love both Ings/Watkins in a two, but it's clear to most it isn't working.

Coutinho seems to be most nailed, since Gerrard loves playing him, and paid a lot but I wouldn't start with him.

The truth is Buenedia has been playing better than him, but for some reason Gerrard doesn't pick him as often.

I'm already in on Bailey. Him and Archer (if I go for a 4.5m bench fodder) are the only Villa players I'd start with.

I agree, Buendia looked better than Cout. But Gerrard seems to love playing 4312 and there is only one spot for Coutinho and Buendia. Watkins seems the safest tho.

    Thoughts on this?

    Alisson,

    Son, Mahrez, Salah, Bailey
    Jesus, Brennan

    4, Neco, Archer, Andreas

class. I honestly think just have one of Jesus/Brennan and invest the cash elsewhere. I know it's a meme/cliche/template kinda thing, but forwards don't have the point scoring in their favour

2 years ago you the likes of DCL at 7, Bamford would emerge at 5.5, Wilson, Watkins 6.5

They're all now inflated price wise and established in minutes only with no up and coming replacement bracket

Something that I haven't seen mentioned yet, but I think is key to Rashford this season...

Manchester United have a rule that at least one academy product must start in every single match. They have kept this going for thousands of games since 1937 and they will not break it now.

The current crop of first team academy products has diminished with the departures of Pogba, Lingard and Henderson, leaving just Rashford, Elanga, and McTominay as the main three.

Given that McTominay and Elanga are not first choice, this puts Rashford in a very strong position in terms of getting starts.

    1. Zimo
      • 8 Years

Does Ten Hag care about that rule

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 29 days ago

Doesn't matter. The club would have made him aware. It would be in his contract most likely.

There's been over 4000 games in a row where an academy player has started. So unless they've decided to scrap that run, Rashford has an edge when it comes to starts.
