Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

The three newest additions to the Premier League, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth, were all profiled in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off), so we begin our team-by-team guides with Aston Villa.

It was a season of steady progress at Villa Park in 2021/22, with Aston Villa’s 14th-place finish not terrible given the loss of talisman and captain Jack Grealish (£7.0m) shortly before the campaign commenced, plus the change in management midway through.

With Steven Gerrard taking the reins in Gameweek 12, all of the team statistics featured here are from that point onwards.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

Shots on target1238th
Big chances4213th=

From Steven Gerrard’s arrival in Gameweek 12 onwards, Aston Villa ranked seventh overall for goals scored, with 38 in 27 matches.

The all-important underlying attacking statistics, meanwhile, paint the picture of a mid-table Premier League side, which feels okay given that the most expensive FPL option for Villa costs £7.5m.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

On inspection, Villa’s defence actually performed very well under Gerrard, suggesting their backline can offer value when the fixtures fall kindly in 2022/23.

The recent additions of defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara (£5.0m) and centre-half Diego Carlos (£5.0m) could potentially tighten them up further, too.

Gerrard often turned to Douglas Luiz (£5.0m) in the number six role last season, also experimenting with Calum Chambers (£4.5m) and Tim Iroegbunam (£4.5m), but French international Kamara feels like a significant upgrade, which could have a positive impact on Villa’s clean sheet potential.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best mid-price FPL forwards for 2022/23 5

In an appealing opening run, Aston Villa kick start the new season away to newly-promoted Bournemouth, then face Everton and Crystal Palace.

Beyond that, things stiffen up considerably.

In fact, Gerrard’s troops meet four of last season’s top eight between Gameweeks 4 and 7, which includes clashes against West Ham United, Arsenal, champions Manchester City and Leicester City.

However, Gameweek 8 looks like the ideal time to ‘hop on’ their assets, with fixtures against Southampton, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Brentford either side of Chelsea in Gameweek 11.

Quality player for 5m. Seems to have the edge over Buendia for a starting spot on the right. Villa have decent fixtures too.

      2 perfect rotation pairs
      Ait nouri/jonny and justin
      Botman and anderson

However there is at least one maybe 2 4.0's that can work really well. The ultimate enablers. E.g i have trippier with ferguson covering his bad fixtures. Also have ait nouri with neco covering his bad fixtures.

First pair gives me NOT bri AVL wol BRE CRY whu BOU ful
Second pair lee FUL eve NEW bou BOU lee FUL

A very attacking set piece specialist fullback in the best defence outside top 6
Rotating wing backs that will be key attacking outlets, set pieces, fairly decent clean sheet prospects.

      17.5m well spent

He's had a nightmare injury run but when palace bought him he was one of the highest rated youngsters in the championship. He has the talent and the pedigree and looks set to make up for lost time this season.

And its actually a can't lose situation because if it all goes tits up i get to continue the fpl tradition of having a failed 4m punt stuck at 3rd bench spot for half a season. It's an important omen that has been key to my success. A dead 4m rotting on your bench is scientifically proven to improve squad morale.

And ut wouldnt even hurt my rotation tbh because andreas can play the two games earmarked for ferg

It's surprising to me that double City attack is so rare on here. Is it simply fear of rotation? Is doubling up with Mahrez / Foden not worth the rotation risk given the fixtures?

    West Ham (A)
    Bournemouth (H)
    Newcastle (A)
    Palace (H)
    Forest (H)

I see nothing but a bucket load of goals looking at those first 5 fixtures. I even wonder if KDB & Haaland is the way to go despite the enormous amount of funds needed. Currently on KDB & Mahrez though.

I've considered KDB + Haaland ebing an option

But for City mids, we go this route every.single.season

      Ederson for 5.5 160 points. That'll do

It's fear of Pep roulette, that and Haaland eats up so much budget. Cancelo also counts as city attack mind you

Absolutely a fear of rotation. Last season I had one nightmare gameweek when all 3 of my City players were rested. Of the mids/fwds only KDB and Haaland are sure to start, and maybe not Haaland.

Midfield rotation is an issue, I like Grealish and expect better minutes this season but 7m is awkward. Cancelo is like a midfielder so I much prefer putting the money into him and then Haaland (although I'm on KDB for now with worries over his time at the start of the season)

Playing out of fear sucks and for me leads to poor decisions. Also your perspective is warped. "Salah scored huge in a week i chose to not get him once" vs "one wrong prediction i made means dictates what player i pick for the next few years" see what i mean

I try to be not result ficused when assessing my success and failures. There is huge luck factor especially when moving between premiums. I think my most cursed transfer was years ago i had hazaard and decided on a switch to alexis sanchez. My reasoning was sound and rational. I predicted alexis had more points in him over the medium term. The week i did it hazaard got his highest ever points return and elexis blanked. The nexy week haazard another huge haul and alexis got injured. After captaincy taken into account it cost me about 100 points in 2 weeks. Rest of the season proved my prediction correct with alexis outscoring hazaard. Some would stress about getting smashed that hard and second guess their predictions and moves when in fact despite the immediate result i knew ny decision was correct and the rest was just the luck variable.

Re salah im a huge liverpoool fan so obviously love mo and mane. One of my best seasons ever ended about 1k and was all built on a gw4 wildcard decision to remove all my liverpool players at a time when they has scored consistently and had great fixtures and millions were buying them but i had watched all the games and saw plenty of signs that they were playing poorly and the points were unsustainable. So i dropped the most highly owned most explosive players and backed others and next few weeks flew uo the rankings as a result.
If you are good at predicting football trends and your logic is solid then always back yourself

Kane is going to be a monster this year. Although Haaland will be pretty good as well IMO.

Trouble is the strikers will have to outscore the Premium Mids by 8 or 9 to get a similar score

But sure you can frequently Captain a premium Mid??

With the extra point per goal and clean sheet bonus, let's say Salah scoreS 23 again, and Pool keep 29 clean sheets again. That's and extra 43 over a striker. So an extra 11 goals to beat him by 1 point. I like Kane and Haaland but can't see them getting 34 goals in the Prem this season. Just a thought

Sure, I just largely stick by the old wisdom of having 2 captainable premiums. Currently in my squad one's a mid (Salah) and the other's a forward (one of Kane/Haaland). I wouldn't perma-cap Salah, so the forward would get plenty double-points.
Of course, if you want to perma-cap Salah, you can go without both Haaland and Kane, same if your premiums are Salah and Son/KDB.

Fair enough, I have Salah and Son for 2 premiums. But I found last year every time I didn't Captain Salah he went and scored 10+ points.... Isn't that always the way though

When is the last time Kane actually warranted his price over a full season? I'd much rather have +1 points for goals and clean sheets from Son, or any other Mid who plays on the front line for that matter, as one of my premiums
