Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

The three newest additions to the Premier League, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth, were all profiled in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off), so we begin our team-by-team guides with Aston Villa.

It was a season of steady progress at Villa Park in 2021/22, with Aston Villa’s 14th-place finish not terrible given the loss of talisman and captain Jack Grealish (£7.0m) shortly before the campaign commenced, plus the change in management midway through.

With Steven Gerrard taking the reins in Gameweek 12, all of the team statistics featured here are from that point onwards.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

From Steven Gerrard’s arrival in Gameweek 12 onwards, Aston Villa ranked seventh overall for goals scored, with 38 in 27 matches.

The all-important underlying attacking statistics, meanwhile, paint the picture of a mid-table Premier League side, which feels okay given that the most expensive FPL option for Villa costs £7.5m.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

On inspection, Villa’s defence actually performed very well under Gerrard, suggesting their backline can offer value when the fixtures fall kindly in 2022/23.

The recent additions of defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara (£5.0m) and centre-half Diego Carlos (£5.0m) could potentially tighten them up further, too.

Gerrard often turned to Douglas Luiz (£5.0m) in the number six role last season, also experimenting with Calum Chambers (£4.5m) and Tim Iroegbunam (£4.5m), but French international Kamara feels like a significant upgrade, which could have a positive impact on Villa’s clean sheet potential.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best mid-price FPL forwards for 2022/23 5

In an appealing opening run, Aston Villa kick start the new season away to newly-promoted Bournemouth, then face Everton and Crystal Palace.

Beyond that, things stiffen up considerably.

In fact, Gerrard’s troops meet four of last season’s top eight between Gameweeks 4 and 7, which includes clashes against West Ham United, Arsenal, champions Manchester City and Leicester City.

However, Gameweek 8 looks like the ideal time to ‘hop on’ their assets, with fixtures against Southampton, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Brentford either side of Chelsea in Gameweek 11.

    How's my team?

Strong starting 11 I reckon but weak bench.

    Mendy
    Tomiyasu, Taa, Doherty, Trippier, Cash
    Martinelli , Son, Salah
    Haaland, Jesus

    Forster, Andreas, Murphy, Greenwood

    Any changes guys?

These are no brainers, I agree. It's the compulsion to fill the quota slots that is part of it and locking in Citeh/Pool "cover"

I'll expand on your post by saying the Son/KDB slot looks more lucrative/explosive than the premium forward slot

Agree that Son / Kev look more promising than Kane / Haaland. But there also seem to be a number of 8.0ish mids that, in combo with a premium forward, stand a good chance to outscore 12.0 mid + 7.5 fwd.

I keep vacillating on which approach to take.

just dicking about at the moment, considering going TAA captain and spreading the funds even more, something like:

          DDG Sa
          TAA Robbo James Chilwell Trippier
          Diaz Mahrez Mount Kulu Bailey
          Wilson Martial Jimenez

              Diaz Mahrez STERLING Kulu Bailey

A differential pick. No Lukaku so I look at sterling and mount supply chain and contenders for top 3 or title so Havertz has to figure in that. Any alternatives?

Figuring I could free .5 by doing Cash>Perisic and then that's 2m itb..and then maybe upgrade Havertz later..

Tuchel had a front 3 with sterling and mount flanking Havertz. I see him in a better light to Werner to be fair.

Avoiding man u at the moment as still not sure about how settled they will be under new gaff.

Son Haaland was much simpler so contemplating KDB & Kane, but not sure I want to compromise on my main cap choice (Son). All quite up in the air for me at the moment. May also just go for 1 City initially (Cancelo) if I think they're in for another slow start (starting to suspect this) & just get Bowen as my GW2 captain

That is actually quite something, interesting

My only counter is that if going the Haaland/Kane route, I think it would be more optimum to share that spot with FTs

      Start with Kane

switch to Haaland for BOU C

Kane lies in reserve ready for Haaland to be managed

      1. Holding Matip
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 29 days ago

The only problem with that is a FT is worth 4 points, so you'd have to hope there's at least a 5 point different between the scores of the two to make it worth it. Also you lose the potential to put out any fires if they arise! Definitely thinking about it though

        1. Ser Davos
          • 11 Years
          4 years, 29 days ago

Yes, you're right. They're precious, but then with set and forget big at the back, perhaps using those precious FTs for upside chasing has some merit

Spreading the 7m over the rest of the team facilitates this

I meant premium + Bailey. Both are 16-16.5m.

          8m + 8m and 11.5m + 5m (being your lowest starting mid)

And then there's rotation risks with all of Bailey, Martinelli and Rashford

This would be my starting 11 based on current form and injuries if the league started tomorrow:

    Ramsdale
    White Saliba Magalhaes Zinchenko
    Partey
    Odegaard Xhaka
    Saka Jesus Nketiah

Zaha licking his lips if Cedric or White are the only RB options, how far is Tomi away from fitness? Or maybe Bellerin stays and Zaha licks his lips even more

      I'd go
      Ramsdale
      Cedric saliba Gabriel zinc
      Partey
      Odegaard Xhaka
      Saka Jesus Martinelli

Eddie is playing extremely good and doesn't deserve to be dropped in my opinion. They're both great LW options and whoever starts will do the job well. At this moment I'd say his chances are 51:49 VS Gabriel as he looked sharper in pre-season so far. Meanwhile ESR has to improve asap and bounce back because healthy competition is good for everyone's development.

Oh come on, I always appreciated Martinelli and I think he's gonna become world class player. But this post was about the first game and not the whole season, their future and careers. It's genuinely think a pretty close call who and in which formation will start. Nketiah has been absolutely killing it since April and if you drop him for no reason, you're also showing the lack of gratitude. Jesus and Saka are nailed and rightly so. Other places are here for the taking.

Ok, I get your reasoning. And I don't expect every Arsenal predicted lineup to include Martinelli. Its just surprising how few on here actually include him at all - sometimes seems like you all want a shiny new name to replace him & it seems to me like he's underappreciated

Not with Daka/Iheanacho, but I think one of those, possibly both, could eventually emerge as fantastic assets with higher upside than the Palace roulette

Barnes has tortured us, but we shouldn't discount him for the, er, discount

Vardy is class, but too much at 9.5. Think he should be mentioned just as much as Jesus/Haaland/Kane

            Dewsbury-Hall could be a tidy 5m placeholder

Haaland is going to be rotated along with all other City players except Cancelo, who is the only sensible pick from City.

Then just pick 3 each from other two good teams - Liverpool and Spurs

Fill in the rest with Chelsea, Arsenal and United

This should be a sound strategy to start with imo

He's not as good as a pick as Salah or Kane, especially for FPL. I'll tell you why.. even when you don't captain one of these two, they will score points but if it was KDB you'll see loads of blanks in his season.

Personally I feel these two players are a level above him

I've seen some mention of four Arsenal players (given Zinc's move) - how does this work with picking them and "locking in" your team? Does it mean you pick the 15 you want then don't make any more transfers? I assume, then, when you go to make any transfers once the season has started that it'll say you have too many from Arsenal?

            1. The Mentaculus
              • 5 Years

If you add e.g. Zinchenko before his move it allows you 4. But at that point you can't make any transfers that don't involve selling one of your Arsenal players

                That's it yep.

It's not really a viable strategy. In particular because Arsenal's fixtures actually improve from GW3 onwards.

It may force me to not be transfer trigger happy and hold for a few.

That's why his dad insists on the clause. Join dortmund for a bargain fee then gets huge signing bonus and wages. Join city for a bargain fee even bigger bonuses and wages. In 2024/25 when his next clause activates he'll be off to probably madrid for more riches.Within 6 years haaland will have been paid a lot more than any footballer in the world barring maybe psg guys
