Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

We continue our team-by-team guides with Leeds United, seeing what their players have to offer.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

A final-day victory over Brentford saw Leeds United become the first side in 11 years to climb out of the relegation zone on the occasion.

Besides this and a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Wolves, it was a troublesome 2021/22 campaign that included the sad dismissal of beloved icon Marcelo Bielsa after a five-match spell where 20 goals were conceded.

The statistics above and below are for head coach Jesse Marsch’s subsequent 12 games in charge. As Double Gameweeks meant teams played between 11 and 14 times after his arrival, the ranks arrange them ‘per game’ to enable a fair comparison.

From Gameweek 28, Leeds hover in the lower mid-table for underlying attacking stats but had the fifth-most big chances, joint with Liverpool and Arsenal.

Undoubtedly, the sale of Raphinha to Barcelona will be a huge loss. The Brazilian was far ahead of all teammates for goals (11), shots (88), chances created (65) and FPL points (145). Replacing such a talisman is difficult, although having Patrick Bamford (£7.5m) back from multiple injuries will finally quality to their forward line.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded1913th
Clean sheets2=12th
Shots conceded17113th
Shots in the box conceded11613th
Shots on target conceded6717th
Big chances conceded2312th

In isolation, the only poor defensive number under Marsch is for conceding shots on target. The rest aren’t too alarming.

However, their backline was catastrophic in Bielsa’s 26 matches, letting in four or more goals on six occasions. Leeds were the league’s worst for goals against (60), attempts on target conceded (157) and big chances allowed (71) and second-worst in most other defensive measurements.

As a result, no defensive assets brought FPL appeal, especially as only six goals and eight assists came from there. Perhaps things would have been better had defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m) not missed three months with a hamstring injury but his summer sale to Manchester City only reinforces how important it is that Marc Roca and Tyler Adams (both £5.0m) quickly get used to Premier League life.

Rasmus Kristensen (£5.0m) looks like a shrewd singing at both ends of the field, at least.

OPENING FIXTURES

Marsch’s side are bit of an unknown quantity ahead of this new campaign.

The American’s first summer at Elland Road has seen arguably his two best players depart but three replacements have so far arrived from the Red Bull clubs where he made his name, alongside Roca and Sinisterra.

Marsch has been fielding strong line-ups in pre-season to help establish team familiarity, as their initial fixture run is full of promise.

According to our Season Ticker, only Arsenal have a better opening seven matches and, when extending this to Gameweek 10, Leeds are in first place.

    I’ve made some changes!

With unlimited transfers roughly halfway through the season and a Wildcard needed to be used before then, this season is the perfect season to go against the grain and try something a little different.

I’ve built my team with two principles in mind: that the value’s in defence and the points are in midfield. The ideal formation for this is a 4-5-1 with a cheap goalkeeper and striker, investing most of my budget in midfield. Now, there is a risk with going with just one playing striker, but with a forward who’s nailed on for 90 minutes every game and doesn’t get rotated eliminates some of that risk - especially with a cheap striker and the money saved going into the midfield and defence.

    The Team:

    ……………..……Henderson

    ……….Trent, Cancelo, Zinchenko, Digne

Salah, De Bruyne, Luis Diaz, Saka, Coutinho

…………………….Johnson

£4.0m - Neco, £4.5m, £4.5m

Notes:

    - This team was built looking at the first 8 Gameweek’s, after which I’ll likely Wildcard when there’s a bit of a fixture swing - if not before if it all goes horribly wrong.

    - I’ve opted for Henderson over the popular Raya and Sanchez as I think Forest will surprise a lot of people this season and I’m hoping he can achieve close to his 160 point total from 19/20. I don’t have the same confidence in Brentford this season as others do and Brighton are losing a couple of key defensive assets. I don’t like any other £4.5m goalkeepers.

    - I know people on here don’t like Digne, but I quite like him. He got 4 assists in 16 games for Villa last season and two of those games he came off injured after 10 minutes or so.

    - Coutinho is a placeholder for any emerging bandwagons after the first 3-4 Gameweek’s. Villa have decent-ish fixtures to begin with, although I think I would’ve preferred another £8.0m midfielder if I had an extra £1.0m.

    - I did originally have Sterling and the Chelsea wingbacks instead of the £5.0m defenders and KDB. I firmly believe Sterling will be a great option this year and may still go with him. But Chelsea have been quite poor in pre-season and KDB has looked very good. Hopefully the Community Shield later today can help me decide.

    - Brennan Johnson fits the mould perfectly for the type of forward I’m looking for. He’s cheap, nailed on for 90 minutes, on penalties, plays for an attacking team, scores and assists, is pacey and looks a good footballer. I think Forest will do well in the Premier League, just as they did in the FA Cup last year against top flight opponents. They’ve got a good manager, play good football and have recruited well over the summer. Forest and Johnson give me the same vibes as Leeds and Bamford during their first season back in the Premier League. I’m hoping Johnson does as well.

    - When we have unlimited transfers and my team value has hopefully increased, I’ll have the option to readjust the tactic and spend a little extra upfront or abandon the lone striker strategy altogether.

TLDR: 4-5-1 is the best formation known to man, Forest to win the league and Brennan Johnson the Golden Boot.

Different does not necessarily means better. I like your reasoning about value and points being in defense and mid respectively but I don't think the options available merit a mid 5. There's a case for a def 5 though but I feel this season forwards will score a lot more points than last year so I don't like a structure with just 1 playing forward and much less a cheapo one.

Both great options but Saka clearly better. The question is what can you do with the extra 2mil if you go Martinelli over Saka.

It wouldn't surprise me if Martinelli shared minutes with Nketiah and ESR, whereas Saka is nailed and on pens.

    3. Fish up a tree

I’m in Martinelli plus 2m right now

2 assists & could have scored the 2nd assist goal himself but unselfish lay off to Eddie.
Could have scored when one on one with keeper & looked a real threats game

Saka had the pen & was gifted a goal by the keeper & looked a threat as well

No wrong choice but the extra 2m I need for the rest of my team

Bruno will play midfield today. Ritchie will play right wing like he did in his Bournemouth days. Almiron played attacking midfield yesterday with Murphy right wing.

Playing two games in two days and splitting the squad is a bit confusing.

Bruno should be defensive midfield for Forest game as Shelvey injured. Miggy favourite for right wing spot at the minute, but not 100% clear.

Defensively they're an absolute non option for me, dalot is kindly priced for years gone by but now that all defenders are cheaper than they should be he's not worth considering

Attack wise they're priced kindly and would do well enough but only if Ronaldo had left. With him there they can only play one way, and always defer to him on the pitch

I love it. Would probably do James-Trippier and upgrade Raya. Would consider James-Trippier, Raya-Ramsdale, and one of the 8.0 mids to Bowen as well.

      But that's me. It's a great team.

    A. £5m Def + £8m Mid (Mahrez)
    B. £6m Def (James/Chill) + Grealish
    C. Robertson + Martinelli

    Ramsdale
    TAA Dalot XXX Cancelo
    Salah Diaz Neto XXX
    Kane Jesus

    Steele Williams Andreas Greenwood

I don't particularly like Newcastles fixtures though. I have Gabriel at the moment. Trippier is a good option no doubt.

Robbo and Walker or Cancelo and Gabriel?

I know Walker is a risk, but was only planning on this team for 8 or so weeks

i don't see any glaring weaknesses, maybe bailey if i was nit picking but even he could be an underpriced gem, so really good team
