Scout Picks - Bus Team

We’ve put together our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ ahead of Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

For those who haven’t seen this article series before, it’s essentially a rough, first draft of our regular picks, which get finalised and published much closer to the deadline.

We are limited to a £83.0m budget for our starting XI, although the bench options – currently – aren’t just unplayable fodder as you might have in your own squads.

We are actually running a poll below on whether they should count as part of a wider £100m overall budget or whether you prefer them to stay as they are, offering cheap, more playable alternatives to the first XI but not price-capped.

The final picks will stay as they are and cement our weekly selection based on the Scout Squad long-list entries and fresh injury updates but this ‘bus team’ article – a term coined by the Always Cheating boys â€“ will discuss the players who are likely to be in the running.

Here it is, then: our early thoughts on the runners and riders up for selection in Gameweek 1, followed by the preliminary picks themselves.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

THE LIKELY LADS

learning-from-the-great-and-the-good-21-22-closing-time 1

There weren’t many weeks when Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) didn’t feature in the Scout Picks last season, and the Liverpool duo are very likely to be included again in Gameweek 1 of the new campaign.

Alexander-Arnold, of course, was the top-scoring FPL defender in 2021/22, averaging one return (be it a goal, assist or clean sheet) per game. Given his points potential at both ends of the pitch, the right-back still feels under-priced, even at £7.5m.

As for Salah, we hardly need any encouragement, but it’s worth noting that he is traditionally a very fast starter. In fact, the Egyptian has managed to score on the opening day of each campaign since signing for the Reds back in 2017.

SALAH’S OPENING DAY RECORD
SeasonGameweek 1 opponentGoalsAssistsBonusFPL points
2021/22Norwich City (a)12317
2020/21Leeds United (h)30320
2019/20Norwich City (h)11212
2018/19West Ham United (h)1008
2017/18Watford (a)11111

Tottenham Hotspur attacking representation, be it through Harry Kane (£11.5m) or Son Heung-min (£12.0m), also looks on the cards for the Scout Picks, with Southampton up first for the Lilywhites on Saturday.

The Spurs pair were in electric form following Antonio Conte’s arrival last season, racking up a combined 44 attacking returns in 2022 alone.

More goals have been scored by Kane and Son in pre-season, resuming one of the most devastating partnerships in the Premier League, and one of them will almost certainly be on Scout Picks duty in Gameweek 1.

Has been impressive in pre season, providing assists and some goal threat. Will start for sure and could be a decent differential now that Raphina has gone

In my side. I think he is the best 5.5m option. Creative outlet now for Leeds, and with Bamford back fit I think there is potential with the fixtures.

I think it would be much better if the scout picks looked 4 to 6 gameweeks ahead with their picks.

Unless you're playing a free hit or dead ending your team, one week punts are not as useful.

    Anyone tempted by Foden?

Grealish just doesn't fit into that City attack (doesn't take players on and get to the by-line, and isn't even cutting in and shooting / crossing). Feel like Foden makes City alot more dangerous when he plays, and Pep did play him alot more last season.

City are a lot better with Foden playing, Saturday was further evidence

Last season: 24 starts, 4 games from bench... 9G 6A 13CS 11BPS = 137 PTS last season. I expect 30 apps this year, but can he step up?

It seems Saka, Mount and Maddison offer more security and same numbers. Good alternatives are also: Trossard, Barnes, Zaha and maybe Coutinho, Martinelli...

I'd start with someone else and hop on Foden when he hits form. Still not 100% fit.

I really want him in my FPL team, but already have Cancelo, KDB. Kane will be Haaland in gameweek 2. So for now I will not have him. Definitely a steal at 8M.

After watching the Community Shield, I've decided I need to find space for both TAA & Robbo.
    How's this non-Salah 442?
    Ederson
    TAA/Robbo/Cancelo/James
    Diaz/Kulu/Saka/Martinelli
    Kane/Jesus

    (Gazza//Andreas/Neco/Archer)

    1. Did you skip Salah's goal and assist? 😉

But in all seriousness - I think spreading the value around the three £8ms plus Martinelli is better than having to look to Neto & Bailey to enable Salah.
Worse case scenario - I can switch him back in.

Way too much Arsenal going forward- they are more of a functional team than a constant goalscoring threat like City or Pool. I would switch out for another forward (potentially cheaper).

        Strong disagree here.
I think we'll see a lot of Arsenal goals over the first 8GWs, and I'm defo going in with at least 2, happy enough to punt on a third too.

If you can’t choose between 2 players it’s probably best to take the one playing the earliest day if possible. If a bandwagon starts friday or Saturday you might not need to sell someone who have not played yet. Do you agree?

    1. The real slim shady
      • 9 Years

This means for example if you can’t decide between Kane and Halaand you go for Kane.

Tuchel can't rate Chilwell. First Alonso, now trying to sign Cucurella

    1. Lav
      • 10 Years
      4 years, 2 days ago

He rates Chilwell, but he will be a slow starter after missing all of that time. Cucurella can play LCB too - Potter used him there. So if he moves he provides versatility & maybe Alonso gets his Barcelona move. Also if we are to close the cap, which we are far away from, we need quality all around...

He does rate him, and Chelsea were at their best when Chilwell was fit.

The issue is that Chilwell had a very serious injury, one that can be career-ending / career-changing. I think Tuchel is worried about Chilwell's long-term fitness. It will take him a few months to be 100% and there is also the risk of further injury.

    4. George Sillett

      My thinking too.
If I have a Kane/Haaland to (C), can I get more points by spreading Salah's value across the £8.0m price point - where there is loads of value, and loads of fun to be had!

    3. _Make

He's unlikely to even get 80% of Salah's minutes. That means he will need to match Salah point for point for every minute he's on the pitch, which seems unlikely. Having said that he's more secure for the first few weeks so it depends whether you would be willing to take a punt for a few weeks. Anything can happen over the course of a few weeks.

Given Slah has pens, Diaz might need to match Salah's non-pen output to finish on 80% of returns

would rather downgrade to Diaz on wildcard if that looked to be an option, also need to consider if you would be as confident captaining Diaz over Salah

Depends what you're doing for captains, reality is it's 200% vs 160%, so I see it as 500 points vs 400 points, you can make 100+ points elsewhere, you're probably right on PPM but no one is as reliable as Salahlalah

    Bailey, Salah, KDB, Aaronson, Andreas
    Jesus, Kane

    Subs: Darlow, Neco, Archer, Vestergaard

No a team strength is based on the overall structure. Also in your team you have KDB AND Salah. Which allows you to switch easier to Son if required. Not many will have Salah and KDB.

Excluding Martinelli, who's your preferred mid at 6.5? Or is it better to drop down to Neto/Bailey and invest the difference elsewhere?

Martinelli is head & shoulders above. I then think Rashford is the fun one. High ceiling.

From memory the only real option at 6.5 is Rashford.
Make of that what you will

Surely the best strategy is to ensure you have a way to have 2/3 players against Bournemouth with minimal transfers, then Fulham/Everton/Forest/Leeds defence are the next teams to target.
    vs Bournemouth
    GW1: Bailey and Digne
GW2: Haaland, Foden or KDB, Cancelo
    GW3: Martinelli, Jesus and Saka/Odegaard/Zinchenko/Gabriel
GW4: most people have 3 Liv assets
GW5: Neto, maybe Podence, Ait Nouri or Jonny

Alright lads, back in business after last season's sabbatical.
GW 1 conundrum, start two of Trippier NFO , Castagne BRE or Dewsbury-Hall BRE?

The king decide when he wants to.

Man alive Man Utd should be escorting him to the door.
