Scout Picks - Bus Team

We’ve put together our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ ahead of Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

For those who haven’t seen this article series before, it’s essentially a rough, first draft of our regular picks, which get finalised and published much closer to the deadline.

We are limited to a £83.0m budget for our starting XI, although the bench options – currently – aren’t just unplayable fodder as you might have in your own squads.

We are actually running a poll below on whether they should count as part of a wider £100m overall budget or whether you prefer them to stay as they are, offering cheap, more playable alternatives to the first XI but not price-capped.

The final picks will stay as they are and cement our weekly selection based on the Scout Squad long-list entries and fresh injury updates but this ‘bus team’ article – a term coined by the Always Cheating boys – will discuss the players who are likely to be in the running.

Here it is, then: our early thoughts on the runners and riders up for selection in Gameweek 1, followed by the preliminary picks themselves.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

THE LIKELY LADS

learning-from-the-great-and-the-good-21-22-closing-time 1

There weren’t many weeks when Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) didn’t feature in the Scout Picks last season, and the Liverpool duo are very likely to be included again in Gameweek 1 of the new campaign.

Alexander-Arnold, of course, was the top-scoring FPL defender in 2021/22, averaging one return (be it a goal, assist or clean sheet) per game. Given his points potential at both ends of the pitch, the right-back still feels under-priced, even at £7.5m.

As for Salah, we hardly need any encouragement, but it’s worth noting that he is traditionally a very fast starter. In fact, the Egyptian has managed to score on the opening day of each campaign since signing for the Reds back in 2017.

SALAH’S OPENING DAY RECORD
SeasonGameweek 1 opponentGoalsAssistsBonusFPL points
2021/22Norwich City (a)12317
2020/21Leeds United (h)30320
2019/20Norwich City (h)11212
2018/19West Ham United (h)1008
2017/18Watford (a)11111

Tottenham Hotspur attacking representation, be it through Harry Kane (£11.5m) or Son Heung-min (£12.0m), also looks on the cards for the Scout Picks, with Southampton up first for the Lilywhites on Saturday.

The Spurs pair were in electric form following Antonio Conte’s arrival last season, racking up a combined 44 attacking returns in 2022 alone.

More goals have been scored by Kane and Son in pre-season, resuming one of the most devastating partnerships in the Premier League, and one of them will almost certainly be on Scout Picks duty in Gameweek 1.

    Is rotating 4.5m def's still a thing?
Thought it died a slow death in 2008/9 season....

      For me it's 5.0 and 4.0.

Last season Borges started with two 4.5m defs, with a third 4.5 rotating with them. Allowed him to go big in attack to stay flexible to the bandwagons. Only once the attacking bargains emerged did he put the cash into defence. Think he did that the year before too...

But I'd be surprised if he did that this year, the pricing is so low for so many top 6 players. You don't need to stay flexible to bargains when the bargains are already there...

Thanks for sharing this. Why can't this strategy work for GW1-6 this year?

          It could.
The last 15 years we have all been "sucked" into this rotation spreadsheets and once the likes of TAA, Cancelo, James & co start firing all the planning(and spreadsheets) are out the window.

          It could sure.

But I would be surprised if bargains emerged that were better than the ones currently available.

I suppose it's a matter of who the banjowagons are. In front or at the back.

    So... 4.5 goalkeeper?

Not sure about Sanchez/Brighton. Raya might have competition in the keeper who came from Lazio. Meslier in a shaky Leeds. Henderson?

Do you ever go with gut instinct with your selections? Or do you prefer to be 100% logical? I'm usually the latter... but I really dislike Luis Diaz in my team, even though logic says otherwise. He's my most transferred in-and-out player in pre season by an absolute mile. It's kinda doing my head in.

People are simplistically thinking Diaz is an 8m-Mane-lite

Watch the guy's highlights and/or general play. He'll offer goals/assists, but he's far from the finished product that's being hyped on here

      1. Cheeky Onion

He's a terrific footballer, but Mane is much more direct goal threat and thus a better FPL option. Will be interesting to see how Diaz makes out this year as an FPL asset

Mané was more prolific, I love Diaz but he doesn't seem to have that clinical edge, at least not yet. The price reflects that, I guess.

    My Kane draft:

    Ramsdale
    Walker Cancelo TAA Robbo
    Salah Mount Bailey Martinelli
    Jesus Kane

    My Darwin draft:

    Ederson
    Cancelo James Trent Doherty
    Salah Mount Saka Martinelli
    Jesus Darwin

    I am 50/50.

    Thoughts? Which one u prefer?

              I’m currently on:

              Raya Ward
              TAA Cancelo James White Neco
              Salah Martinelli Aaronson Bailey A.Periera
              Jesus Darwin Kane

The midfield isn’t super strong but they are all starters who could score well - albeit not as good as Mount, Saka etc.

      Firstly, my thoughts are:
Top teams have great early fixtures. Add to that, the early start to the season meaning there’s no European mid-week games until GW5. I personally, can see City, Liverpool and possibly even Spurs and Arsenal getting off to flyers.

WC GW5 after TW closes and re-assess

What are the thoughts now regarding Perisic, with his rather attacking performance, but with Sessegnon + Conte's comments about his fitness + Champions League? Safe to have him with a good first sub, or better off avoiding?

    TAA, Cancelo, Tomiyasu,
    Salah (C), Mahrez, Zaha, Martinelli,
    Watkins, Antonio, Havertz,

Unsure on Watkins/Bamford/Wilson- would appreciate thoughts on that.

I like it, others won't but Zaha is underrated regardless of fixtures. But Hazertz no

      1. stat sifter 888888
        • 5 Years

For me it's a choice between Havertz and Mount and I just think that Havertz gets further forward even though Mount has a goal threat from mid. Chelsea were the 3rd highest scoring team last year so unless I get Sterling I want some cover there. Ziyech is a rotation risk (even though I like him) and Sterling is too fresh for me.

        1. LarryDuff
          • 10 Years
          3 years, 7 months ago

Hazertz hasn't proven his worth, could have a great season but I wouldn't go with from the start

          1. stat sifter 888888
            • 5 Years

He came into the second striker role fairly late on (there was more competition from Werner and Lukaku) and scored quite a few. Lukaku's out, Werner's not in good form and I think Havertz is nailed in a forward position somewhere. I would prefer to take Mount but there's no value in 6/6.5 forwards, the only decent ones are 7.5 and above.

    2. polis
      • 14 Years
      3 years, 7 months ago

That forward line is certainly different.

      Mount over Havertz for me.

I'd probably pick Bamford over Antonio.

        • 5 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

        Cheers for the comment.
I think you're right that Mount is a better pick. However, as long as Havertz starts (which looks likely considering their lack of a CF) I think he will grab a decent share of the goals for Chelsea. There's no value whatsoever in the £6m forwards, whereas players like Martinelli and Bailey are both decent picks imo.
For me, Bielsa's gone, Leeds is a lot worse team than West Ham and West Ham have Notts Forest week 2.

Where would you invest the extra 0.5 ITB?

    Meslier (4.0)
    TAA Robbo Cancelo (Neco Patterson)
    Saka Salah Neto Martinelli Bailey
    Haaland Jesus (Greenwood)

Ramsdale would have been tempting but quite set on the triple Ars I have now. Maybe Meslier to Pope or Patterson to Dunk/4.5?

A question on Trippier. Why has he never really gotten goals or that many assists before he joined Newcastle? Was he rarely on set pieces? Didn't have license to go forward?

Eriksen was on most set pieces, Trippier was often second fiddle to Walker, Trippier also played for Burnley.

    Thoughts on this team?:
    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo Cash Trippier
    Salah Diaz Saka Bailey
    Kane Jesus
    Bench Fodder

Plan is to move Cash out for Walker after 2 GWs.

    Cheers!

Tried to log in via the App for weeks and it keeps closing (have not yet entered a team for the season), is it just me?

Both the site and app are glitchy! If I try to transfer in a player on the website on my phone it never lets me scroll down to select players! I’m just resigned to using a computer to make any update

A few had issues with registration when it opened, had go register on the site first and activate 2FA before it worked. Have you made sure it's updated or tried deleting and reinstalling?

If picking a 4 or 4.5 unlikely to play "fodder" as a perpetual sub, is it best to pick the one with the lowest ownership, as less risk of his price going down?

    Raya
    TAA Robbo Perisic Cancelo Walker
    Salah Mount Neto
    Kane Jesus

Perisic out for Martinelli in a 4-4-2?

I'm considering Kulu over mount. Want Robbo over Diaz, always had Kane, TAA and Cancelo, Jesus ownership makes him a necessity for me.

Think you’ll benefit from returns at both ends from Perisic. He may be limited to 70 mins when spurs go a couple ahead tho

I hope 5-6 non-template players have a decent first gameweek… Lingaard, Vardy, Maddison, Nunez, KDB etc… break up these template teams and make people shuffle their pack.

At the moment it looks as though 80% of teams contain the same 6-7 players. The fringe/mid-price players could make or break managers seasons…

With the World Cup this season and therefore the fact that matches are being condensed into a shorter period of time (The CL group matches will come thick and fast this season), has that affected your thinking?

Has it made teams not competing in Europe more attractive to you? Newcastle, Leicester, Wolves etc.

My own fear is that rotation among the big clubs will be worse than ever this season and drive us all mad!

I think most are thinking to gw 8 before champions league thus rotation not so much an issue

Early doors it really isn’t an issue…..but of course when Europe kicks in the lower owned non Europe teams (with the added bonus of more data) will bring the opportunity to nail some more value/differential picks.

Not sure if Edouard or Mateta have nailed the Palace spot @ 5.5m

You probably need to go to 6m and then there's Mbeumo or Johnson.
