We bring the curtain down on the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action and look ahead to Gameweek 2 in The Digest.

Here, we discuss the impact of two new number nines – Darwin Nunez (£9.0m) and Erling Haaland (£11.6m) – and how the Norwegians haul has forced an early price drop for Harry Kane (£11.4m).

DARWIN NUNEZ

FPL pre-season: Nunez hits four

Just as he did against Manchester City in the Community Shield, Darwin Nunez made an instant impact upon his introduction at Craven Cottage.

The forward came off the bench to both score and assist for nine FPL points, and it now feels like a matter of time before he is installed in Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice XI.

And when starting regularly, FPL managers will be faced with a decision over which three Liverpool players to own.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) will most likely take up two spots for the majority, but which of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz (£8.0m) or Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) should join them?

While far from their best in Gameweek 1, Liverpool created plenty of chances. In fact, they produced four big chances to Fulham’s one, which arrived from the penalty spot.

Darwin was introduced after 51 minutes but managed to get on the end of three of those big chances, with Luis Diaz failing to register a single attempt on goal in that time. It’s also worth noting that the Uruguayan registered four shots against Man City in the Community Shield, despite only coming on after an hour.

There have been a lot of questions about how Klopp’s side might work this season with a traditional number nine, and the early signs are certainly encouraging for Darwin. However, further analysis is surely required before deciding on the best Liverpool three.

ERLING HAALAND AND MANCHESTER CITY

“We had the feeling that we could find him more… now we have him and when the defence is high with open space, these guys have to find him. When you have this open space and Kevin (De Bruyne), it’s difficult to stop him.” – Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland

As far as introductions go, it wasn’t a bad one, was it?

Erling Haaland’s two goals, maximum bonus and 13 FPL points, plus some truly explosive pace and movement in the final-third, was simply outstanding to watch.

The Norwegian had five shots over the course of his 78 minutes on the pitch – more than twice as many as any team-mate – and also ranked top for opposition box touches, with 10.

“There are few players you see that have absolutely everything. The physicality, the strength, the power, the finishing, the understanding, the timing – they are unique. You could play against a Zinedine Zidane or a Ronaldo (the Brazilian one) when we were playing and think, ‘There is nothing I can do here’. There will be defenders in the Premier League who won’t make mistakes and be helpless. He’s too strong, too quick. It’s almost an unfair competition. He is unplayable. He is a giant and is still young, so if he stays fit, the rest are in big trouble.” – Gary Neville on Erling Haaland

Elsewhere, City’s use of Kyle Walker (£5.0m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) was interesting, as they took up narrow midfield positions in Man City’s 2-3-5 build-up shape, which is captured on their respective touch heatmaps below.

Above: Kyle Walker (left) and Joao Cancelo’s (right) touch heatmaps v West Ham United in Gameweek 1

“I like to have a lot of players in the middle, it is like the kitchen in the apartment. We just want to create.” – Pep Guardiola

If a similar system is deployed again, it could be good news for City’s two number eights.

On Sunday, that was Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) and Ilkay Gundogan (£7.5m), both of whom were able to push up high and close to Haaland, knowing Walker and Cancelo were covering in behind alongside Rodri (£6.0m).

THE KANE TO HAALAND TRANSFER

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 24? 8

Going back to Haaland, there is clearly more to come from the big man, which is why his double-digit haul has already caused a transfer frenzy in FPL.

The Norwegian is the most-brought player ahead of Gameweek 2, having been snapped up by over 750,000 Fantasy managers at the time of writing.

As a result, Haaland now costs £11.6m.

However, the move has had a knock-on effect: Harry Kane has been sold by over 600,000, forcing a price drop in the early hours of Monday morning.

For those who made the move, it involved a £0.2m swing and is probably justified given their Gameweek 2 fixtures. Longer-term, however, it is perhaps still open for debate.

Went threemium & skipped cancelo James
Now want cancelo & think kulu will ne close to son/kane
    Thinking
    Son + White -> Martinelli + cancelo (-4) & Bailey/Neto to kulusevski next GW
Thoughts? Or do a straight son to kdb swap? Want triple city for sure against Bournemouth

Are you sure? Lost faith in Son after one game? He still looked to be getting in dangerous positions & I think those regular double digit hauls are going to start flowing again really soon

It's not that, I know he'll haul, it's that kulusevski will also be there around him & the 4 mn saving can be used in defence, son & kdb are probably my favourite fpl assets
But getting hard to fit them alongside salah & haaland & cancelo James

I went threemium as I thought son would explode & give lots of points & I'll have cheaper defensive cover from other teams, but with kulusevski consistently doing well, feels like it'd be foolish to miss out on cancelo James perisic & the likes

Went 3mium also. Part of the beauty is having both Haaland and a Spurs premium for upcoming fixtures.

Wait and see if Kulu can keep up with the premiums, and wouldn’t do it for a hit. Do it with 2 FT and more info.

You have cancelo? Thing is kulu has been consistent since his move, also not sure how will spurs do against Chelsea

Walker and Haaland from City and very happy to roll the transfer.

Spurs could score against Chelsea and fixtures after that are great.

Not saying it’s a bad move. But if Son and White both don’t blank, won’t be easy to get your -4 back.

Not getting kulu now, moves would be son and white to Martinelli & cancelo
Don't think Arsenal keep a CS against Leicester & cancelo can haul majorly, plus looking at a WC in 3/4 so ok to take risks

    Random one...

Will their still be price rises and falls during the free winter wild card / world cup break ? Or is everything frozen when the season stops temporarily?

Probably not. Transfers made under a normal WC don't count toward price changes so I assume it will be the same during the World Cup WC.

        Yeah.

Anyone remember back to Lockdown 1 with no football, the rolling slow wildcard with 1 change a week and absolutely nothing happening. At all.

Any price changes then? Assume momentum was low unlike World Cup intensity and injuries etc. Heat exposure.

How was he so bad? He would have scored if not for a good save from Pickford, his threat was nullified a little too with James taking all the corners (and awfully, so I'd say Mount will surely take some next game)

Mount is one of the best players at Chelsea and gets more minutes than any other forward player. He had an off game but I bet he has a brilliant season. I’ve got Saka but I will very likely move to Mount when fixtures improve!

This divides opinion. Think I will bench Reece AND Andreas and play Neto and Bailey

But most others say play Reece ahead of the other three.

I've got Cash and Bailey. My analysis of GW1 indicates that Villa are not set up to score, and Everton have no attack. So I think I'll start Cash, who has a decent chance of a clean sheet, but bench Bailey. Andreas played well enough to warrant a start, and Spurs should score, lessening James' appeal for that one game.

I agree with all of that and have every part of this conundrum, need to choose 3 to play out of
Cash (thought it was a decent perisic/chilwell placeholder and still has decent CS chances GW2)

James (love him but spurs should score)

Neto (decent home fixture, and originally planned to play him in this fixture)

Andreas (better than we thought, but is he better than the others)

Bailey (good home fixture, the reason I picked him- give him the chance?)

          Cash/Neto/Bailey to play

          James Andreas benched

          Totally understand why others disagree

I wouldn't be completely against it, I expect Spurs will score and he probably will play there. That being said, even if he does he may still rack up a big score even if not doing much (as we saw the other night). I remember a couple of years ago being told "never bench Robbo" in a similar situation and I thought it was a ridiculous viewpoint, especially given Liverpool weren't defensively sound by any means at that point just like Chelsea now. Might have to ignore the noise here and come to your own conclusion as you'll only be told one thing here

Didn't impress against West Ham although it was a tight game, but Grealish looked better. Don't think Bernardo going will impact Foden's minutes much unless Pep wants to play him centrally, but it seems like the noise about him playing on the right in preseason was correct so I think Gundogan and Phillips will benefit there

      They'll still have 8 midfielders.
      +
      3 attacking options.

Okay 3 are very much squad players... Delap, Phillips, Palmer for now.

Then there's the attacking defenders camped in midfield too.

So it's still a holding midfielder (Rodri), another 2 the middle (KDB + 1), 2 wingers and a 9 to pick.

So 6 from 9 might not be so bad on rotation, as you say.

Why do many of you play this game? The whole point is to pick players, based on our research, watching games, reading match reports, or more importantly....having a hunch. Then hopefully they score points, which is satisfying and feels good. What is the point in playing, if for every single decision made, you allow strangers on here to make them for you? And make no decisions yourself? Blows my mind. Posting your team and saying "What transfers should I make?" should result in you forever losing the right to enter a fantasy football team again.

Can you post your best drafts and I'll choose the best one, thanks!

It's the FH ones that always get me.

You only have to think about the best players from the strongest teams with the plummest fixtures that week (for your budget), and you still ask who those players are? If you can't do that for yourself, you really are lost.

    FPL still laggy for anyone else? Anyways will probably roll the FT, but any thoughts here please;

    Mendy
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Chilwell, Perisic
    Son, Diaz, Grealish, Martinelli
    Haaland (c)

    Ward, Andreas, Greenwood, Taylor

    0 ITB.

A bore draw between Chelsea v Spurs is probably the best I can hope for unless Son goes for a mega haul all assisted by Perisic, but the latter is my primary concern. Tempted by Perisic > Cresswell given he has three 2 FDRs in a row, would also bank 0.5 and really allow me to see whether Perisic gets into a starting position (I thought at the start of the season he would've). Alternative is Zinchenko, but not sure I wanna lose 0.1M so soon (kicking myself for not grabbing him at the start of the season like I wanted when he moved).

Good team, although a few of those could be at risk of rotation (Chilwell, Perisic, maybe even Grealish).

Thanks, was super happy with it start of the season, especially when I saw everyone bar Perisic start (which was understandable after I saw the Conte comments, but figured I'd run the risk).

Grealish I think even if he doesn't start will come on, like how Mahrez, Palmer, Bernardo etc came on vs West Ham. Chilwell I do think he'll continue to start, especially given he was hooked at the hour mark and Spurs is a big game.

Who would you change/what would you change in the above and for whom?

I actually really would like Darwin immediately, but means three changes to get him realistically (as I'd like to keep Diaz).

Yeah that's a good point re. Chilwell, although for a like-for-like swap James could be an option.

For Perisic, alternatives could include Zinchenko (still great value despite the price rise) and Saliba.

Darwin I think is going to give me a headache as the season goes on, I already have 3 Liverpool players (Trent, Robbo, Salah) so I'm waiting for more solid evidence to allow Darwin to force his way in, more likely at Robbo's expense. September/October will be a key time in my mind to make a decision there given Jota's imminent return from injury and the start of midweek games could result in some rotation.

I'm thinking of going on a double up of Sessegnon and Perisic and using that Paul O'Keefes guys predictions to hopefully predict correctly who starts each time. Could be very good strategy considering he usually gets them right. Should be spot on for at least 30 games in my mind. What does everyone else think?

You're thinking about those tweets that were doing the rounds some time ago correct? Where Perisic finished 60+ minutes only 17 of his 30 something games. That's technically correct but out of those 30 something games only 20 were starts. So he only got subbed off before 60 three times really.

    Put more simply maybe:

    3 across the front,
3 midfield in a Manchester City inverted 4-3-3

Rodri, KDB and Haaland likely to feature. Especially the first 2.

That leaves Foden, Mahrez, Grealish, Gundogan, Phillips and Álvarez for the other 3 spots if Silva leaves.

    Plus Palmer too.

    Hello everyone.

I am not an FPL youtuber or an FPL expert bit what I can say is having to start one of Bailey or Neto or even both in your team week after week is going to lead to many 2 and 3 pointers. Having to start Andreas is just an entire waste to your points tally. Going big at the back is like being on seewsaw.

Perhaps, just perhaps going without Salah, Son or KDB, the most expensive players in the game, could get you all the toys you cannot have because let's face it, these three names are the ones which always spring into your mind first, and 1 or even 2 of them will be your first selection season after season.

Haaland and Darwin have flipped the table even when it is early doors.

You can have your big at the back and a midfield with no 2 to 3 pointers every week plus a shiny forward line.

Ok, so that is my mindboggling idea for today. I love taking part in this form and GL for GW2!

Are you a prophet? So you can predict with confidence that Bailey and Neto will not score a single goal or get a single assist. You better tell Gerard and Bruno Lage what you know. Could earn you millions.

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 6 Years

2 to 3 pointers ever GW was just some tongue in cheek but that is what they will give you most GW's.

    2. Eze Really?

      1st rule
      2
      5
      5
      3
      Your squad
      2nd rule
Consistent points per million knowing a captain id double points per million
      3rd rule
Value at the back is clear but so are the less expensive defenders 4.0 scores 3 pts 7.5 scores 5 points.
      4th rule
You have to have at least 5mids/forwards.
Take that in and reassess value.

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 11 months ago

But thosr are the rules started by 1 person, the next person listened and boom, everyone followed each other on those rules.

Nobody rules you in this game, well let me reprase that, nobody should rule you.

New ideas are always frowned at when the 'rules' everyone learned simply make you a follower.

        1. Eze Really?
          • 12 Years
          3 years, 11 months ago

The word rule might be misleading.
Rule 1 cannot be changed and the substance of the game cannot be either. How you apply your team to the rules are what counts. 1 and 4 cannot be argued. The other 2 are more the target or application.

          1. FOO FIGHTER
            • 6 Years
            3 years, 11 months ago

So there is only one rule, and your team won't work if you do not follow that rule, right?

Well, that is what you learned or how you were taught to play this game when coming up with uour own ideas could very well be a solution to following a rule created by some random person who shared it with another person and now only that rule needs to be followed?

            1. Eze Really?
              • 12 Years
              3 years, 11 months ago

We are not on the same page mate. "Rule 1" 2 5 5 3. That is FPL telling us the available positions in their game. Tell me how one proposes changing that?

              1. FOO FIGHTER
                • 6 Years
                3 years, 11 months ago

This was just an idea which proves me correct that new ideas are always frowned upon while the 'rule' you follow unlikely will make you a better player by following a rule which was made for you without your input.

I don't have Mount in my squad, but in your position I would keep him. Across a whole season he'll give you plenty of points, the weird thing with him is that it's difficult to predict when those points will come - he could blank against Bournemouth one week then make a match-winning contribution against Liverpool or Man City another week - so just keep him there.

You chose Kane for a reason so if you're not doing This Week's Thing and moving Kane to Haaland, why not keep him and see how him, Darwin and Jesus shape up. It's not as though Kane looked disinterested, just didn't return for one week.

So C for me, but if not C, then go A because Darwin looks set to hit the ground running and it frees up cash

Assuming you've pressed the button and I can't convince you otherwise, of those two options I'd go A. Mostly because it's got Salah in there but also because I think Jesus will come through, Dunk is shrewd and Ederson is one I slightly wish I'd gone for myself instead of Ward

He’s in my thinking but slightly put off by how far I have to scroll down on the ‘sort by points scored’ list

I've already bought DaSilva and Moore. Twice.

I mean considering Brightons next few games, would be worth a shout with going against Leeds and Fulham

Could Martinelli score as many points as Jesus this season ? Think of swapping to allow me to bring in Haaland.

feel like for 6m Martinelli is too good to let go for that price. But its Haaland lol

I was thinking of bringing in Martinelli for Son and Haaland for Jesus. Allows me money in the bank to upgrade Saliba to James too.

I feel like Saliba is a must have in the coming weeks, especially for 4.5m

What's everyone's thoughts on Aaronson, not seen much on him, but everyone is going crazy for him

I feel like it would be pointless to have on vs Arsenal

‘2 Points’ Brenden? He’s not for me mate.

He looked pretty decent from the highlights and Leeds have a good fixtures - could be a decent option for anyone looking to move on the likes of Rashford/Mahrez and generate some funds.

He didn't even score or assist
