FPL Trader – aka Paulius – is currently ranked 37th in our Hall of Fame and wrote an excellent piece about finding value in pre-seasonHere the three-time top 300 finisher outlines his Gameweek 2 plans and reflects on the decision to play the Bench Boost in Gameweek 1.

A lot of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) decisions simply depend on what kind of manager you are. Personally, I wouldn’t call myself a risk-averse manager. I’m not reckless either but I try not to be swayed by effective ownerships or template teams.

On the contrary, my joy in playing FPL is finding the right moments to move differently from the crowd and, at the same time, gain an edge. I feel that using a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 is exactly that kind of situation.

Why I played the Bench Boost in Gameweek 1

Firstly, a few reasons why this Bench Boost is related to my style of seeking differential moves:

  • It means the Gameweek 1 squad will be different from the template, as there is a need for the manager to spread funds differently to have a stronger bench.
  • Due to this, you will use your Wildcard at a different time than the majority of others. This is a very important aspect. The success of a Wildcard very much depends on timing, as our perception of the best FPL assets changes over time. So if the Gameweek you activate this chip proves to be the ‘right’ one, you will have lower competition when seeking the top FPL ranks.
  • There will be a different chip strategy later in the season, as others will seek to Wildcard right before using a Double Gameweek Bench Boost. You may even use your Free Hit at a different time. Again, being correct with this chip strategy will mean significant rank increases.

The above points are about increasing your variance and, possibly increasing your chances of winning FPL. However, I think it is perfectly viable that a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 may have been the optimal strategy:

  • A deep bench allows you to have ‘cash cows’ when extra funds are needed.
  • Having 15 active players increases the probability that you’ve included a price-rising bandwagon that increases your team value, as long as you can manage those that decrease.
  • It’s easier to plan chip strategy for later in the season. For example, you may use a Wildcard in the biggest Double Gameweek rather than just beforehand. In my opinion, managers end up focussing too much on maximizing the Bench Boost, whilst sacrificing other opportunities. This chip will usually score you an extra 15-20 points but it also restricts your decision-making freedom, which could ultimately be worth more in points than that Bench Boost.
  • As the World Cup break has provided an extra window for unlimited transfers, many managers were already planning on using an early Wildcard. Therefore carrying an expensive bench wouldn’t be for long.

Furthermore, there is also the strategy of using Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 and then a Wildcard in Gameweek 2. This allows a fun hybrid of Free Hit and Bench Boost but has the disadvantage of deploying a Wildcard with only one week of information. In this case, I preferred to build an opening Bench Boost squad that can also last for at least a few Gameweeks.

Is such a style for you? You’ll need to be mentally prepared for things going badly, as it’s hard to get online sympathy when you use a strategy that is far different from the consensus. Yet this way of playing brings me the most adrenaline and joy.

How did Gameweek 1 go?

My 15-man squad took home 79 points. Without a playing bench, it would have been 71, which is roughly what the template teams scored. I was unlucky with my bench, as the attacking outfielders had a combined expected goal involvement of 0.80, whilst David Raya (£4.5m) conceded twice from an expected goals conceded (xGC) tally of 0.62.

It should have brought at least one return which, in my eyes, would have made it a successful Bench Boost.

My future plans

I have already moved Mason Mount (£8.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) to Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) and Erling Haaland (£11.6m) for a hit. There was no obvious route to Haaland as I did not think he would start the season so strongly – my initial plan was to move Mount to Phil Foden (£8.0m) for Manchester City coverage.

However, it now seems that he will be the main captain option in several upcoming Gameweeks. You need to find opportunities to be different and I think that going without Haaland is not the right one.

Do you think Mahrez starts GW2?

Point is it pep roulette so asking really is pointless and any answer you receive really is pointless because no one knows or will ever know … I’m not sure pep even knows.

Maybe it's the case that if you need to ask there is a risk.
Maybe he's OK for this game, but do you want him for one game or for several gameweeks to come.
If you have a decent bench then it's would be easier to have him.

I have an adequate bench but just can’t account for 1 min appearances like gw1. Need more than that for an £8m player!

    Why they are soooo goood

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) both ranked among the top five players in the 2021/22 overall standings thanks to their multiple routes to returns.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool’s right-back claimed five double-figure scores at home last season, underlining his captaincy potential.

    Joao Cancelo
His 81 shots were more than any other Man City player in 2021/22.

Just a pity Cancelo only converted one of those shots.

Cancelo being 'quite' vs West Ham was tactical. Even Antonio spoke about it.

BOU could very well find themselves in a butchery.

He's been quiet since preseason. He'll get 5-6 assists this season and maybe 1 goal again if he's lucky. Overrated pick.

            Really?

You should never take preseason seriously.

UTD thumped LFC 4-0 in preseason.

You need to pay more attention to what happened in the game and the interviews.

Pep played a very different tactic v West Ham than previously.

In possession Cancelo and Walker were either side of Rodri as basically a central midfield 3. Not Cancelos cutting inside and going into the final third the whole game.

Whether it was a 1 off or not remains to be seen, but glib comments on here don’t add to the discussion.

                    Yes, pay attention

Guardiola was asked about his use of his fullbacks in today's press conference, with quotes provided by Manchester Evening News.

The City manager said "It's not the first time, many years, last season with a proper striker or false nine. Many games we play this season or don't play. Depends on the shape of the opponent or how the opponent defend.

But Walker at 2m less and Ederson at 5.5 and with other attacking fullbacks in TAA Robbo James Zinchenko Trippier and Perisic Chilwell to add to them soon makes me think I don't wanna get him if he ends up being a dud.

I made the swap to Walker to free up that 2 mil for reasons mentioned, I've a Cancelo backup plan, but I think I gotta risk it. Hopefully the baps 2 mil I can spend elsewhere covers the Cancelo baps. If Walker can match within a point or two, I'd be happy to risk. But it is a risk. I do like Cancelo a lot

How on earth does this guy get writing space on here? 8 off a bench boost and says it was 'unlucky'.
Even a novice would know that there is always a likelihood of several double gameweeks later in the season. These create the ideal time to use TC and BB. You can have a 15 man squad playing 30 games total, not including the double points for captain. Even if his bench was just as attrotious at least with a dgw he would have 16 extra points and double the chance of more returns.
Ridiculous article and a ridiculous waste of a token that may make all the difference.

Thing is, towards the end of the season you have more team value, so can probably afford some decent bench to play in double gameweek.
      Better bench, two games.
Don't see why people play BB on GW1 as you have the least information and have to the waste your wildcard earlier than you should (I assume).

This is quite a shortsighted take on the advantages / disadvantages of the bench boost.

The immediate advantage in the dgw is obvious, but it the chip often doesn't get as many extra points as one would hope for. I'd say anything over 15 points is usually decent, even in a dgw. The advantage of playing it early, is just to get it out of the way. One can be too focused on making sure you have 15 dgw players for a dgw, with ideally a half decent bench, this can impact your team in the weeks either side of the dgw and you can end up with wasted money on bench and a substandard squad of players you'd never normally pick.

I can certainly see the benefit in playing it as early as possible just to be rid of it.

Of course it's a lottery, the whole game is

However, later on on the season when you have more cash for a bench in a double week just makes sense

Couldn't agree more, by the time u use your 2nd wildcard you can have all the gr8 cheap players on the bench and have a gw planned or the week after the wildcard with an extra 6-7 mill to spend

Also by spreading his initial funds he's had to take a hit to get Haaland - a move many of us made allowance for in our non-BB squads. So his net score is 75 in reality and he only has 1FT GW3. But hey, I've never finished in top 1k so what do I know with my 73 and 2FT GW3

I think this is a great commentary on a new strategy. The guy has three top 300 finishes in the game and explains his thinking about how he plays the game and then let's us know how it didn't work out. He now has a new plan and has shared that too. I'll bet good money he'll finish above all the critics here.

Not sure I would replicate the strategy set out in this article.

A bench boost that gave 8 points with 21 million on the bench which also makes GW2 transfers limited by funds, followed by a hit (so BB was really effectively 4 points) to sell Jesus who plays Lei, Bour, Fulham & Villa in the next 4 games - well that doesn't really seem like a well thought out way to start the season ... actually it looks like an over-thought out strategy perhaps

Because he had an expected assist of just 6 last year and got 7. 4 were fantasy assists after his shots. If he won't be shooting as much because the prerogative is to set up Haaland then his expected goal involvement has gone down by half already.

I think Haaland will occupy defenders as the season goes on and as well as Haaland every one will be scoring and assisting for City.

Let's not forget that Haaland will be hooked at 70 if City are winning and Cancelo will be part of the last 20 minute when the most goal attempts are made.

I think also Cancelo was very unlucky not to score more goals last season and he wil chip in with 3 or 4 goals this season

Having a 200 point attacking defender from City for 7 mill is a no brainer imho

I'd agree, and thought Perriera looked really good too, but think Fulham managed to exploit well the space left by Pool's attackers which Wolves are unlikely to provide them. I can see that game being quite tight. Whereas Bailey presents much more of a threat than Perriera and they play

The problem comes in when people have Bailey as a starter and then go onto decide whether they need to bench Bayley or Andreas.

This is literally wasting a spot in your 11 with a player you know is not going to contribute f all.

Yep, which is why you're better off banking the .5 on Bailey or upgrading him. Imo, there's not much under 8 I want to bank on. if you need the funds for going big up top, or at the back. It's pissing .5's into the wind that can easily upgrade the Ward/Iverson combo for e.g.

People have Bailey playing and a 4, 4.5 and 4.5 bench for a reason, to have better players elsewhere. They're not there to bang in double digit hauls, the odd assist or goal in every 3 does. Bailey scores tomorrow 😉

You can have a very decent starting eleven and a player which is slighty more expensive than Bailey.

Yet people think because Bailey is 5.0 he is a bargain when your 4.5 midfielder on your bench will score as many points as him.

                Bravo

                  -------The Old Bailey-------
Cant look at it like that Bailey is underpriced. There's no way Andreas (basically united benchwarmer) scores more than Bailey this year. You should watch bundesliga highlight shows too, basically the PL testing ground, great attackers. Bailey was one of those great attackers at Leverkusen and starting to see the old Bailey again.

If anyone cares, I would say that Alvarez and Foden start on the wings for City against Bournemouth.

They will keep the width with full backs getting into the middle. That's how City usually play against 5 at the back.

I've never liked a GW1 BB for a number of reasons and this season in particular I definitely do not like it because the world cup offers unlimited transfers.

    1. We just don't know enough. This is by far the biggest thing. We don't know which teams are good, which teams are underperforming, which players are good, which ones are nailed. There are always some teams that just don't match their preseason expectations. I would probably have picked double Villa in GW1 vs bou and that would have flopped hard. But it was a very reasonable thing to do before we got to watch any games.

    2. Team value is low. We can build team value throughout the season on good quality assets and we give that up for a GW 1 BB.

    3. It forces an early WC or big hit. Having to take a -8 is pretty disastrous for this week when many players are rolling their FT with a much better built squad. You've effectively thrown your bench boost away.

    4. Unlimited transfers after World Cup is a better time. The fact we get free transfers after the world cup makes that week a much stronger BB week off unlimited transfers. I remember a few years ago with COVID disruption and restart that the week upon return was one of the best times to BB and BB17 is very firmly in my thoughts as a result.

GW1 BB is good to have some fun but it is definitely a -EV line and I don't recommend it for any season.

      • 16 Years

Yea mentioned it earlier about having a totally diff post to help mix up the drama for the sake of it... but as much as a BB in week 1 could smash, there's a good chance it won't. Yeah the BB is a lottery, but week 1 probably isn't the best idea for me. rather bank it for a high tv double week later on

i've had success and and failure with a gw1 BB so i'm not against the idea at all, this year i didn't bother as there was good cheap fodder in the likes of Ward, Andreas, Neco & Patterson i wanted to have so i didn't want to weaken my starting 11 to have a stronger bench with better fixtures, as luck would have it though all of the above have good fixtures in gw3 so i will 100% use it then if they all look like starting,

pros, no wasted funds no weakening of my starting 11 whatsoever & no hits or WC used to make it stronger or fix it afterwards

cons, its just a sgw, and they are cheap fodder for a reason so i'd consider anything above say 12pts a decent BB

      Interesting points.
      1. Agree with point 1, that not knowing enough is an obstacle. However, if you plan to use BB after world cup there may be the same issue, as forms of teams and players will be hard to predict.
      2. I prefer to use increase in team value for my main squad, not for the bench.
      3. I took -4, not -8. And it was not penciled in, it was the outcome of strong performance of Haaland.
      4. Using after world cup is similar as using in GW1. However, if you use after world cup it could be harder to clear your bench, as you will not likely use WC shortly afterwards.

Only problem with your BB is that you now have a very lopsided team with Bailey, Neto, Andreas & Solanke, plus arguably Trippier & Toney (done well so far though, but Trippier is a benching headache now and will their early season form hold?) selected at the expense of the standard Neco (bench fodder) & Jesus

Looks like bit of a false economy spreading cash on to the bench in GW1, imho

Here is an idea, next time you want to pick a team, start on your bench and pick 4m defenders, 4.5 midfieldrrs and 4.5 fwds.

Then go to pick the team you want to score you points.

Then you wont have this issue 🙂
