Saturday evening saw Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen (£6.5m) make a quick return to Brentford, only to be shellshocked with a 4-0 half-time deficit that didn’t improve by its conclusion.

Watching from the sides was unused Bees substitute Mikkel Damsgaard (£5.5m), a fellow Danish international whose arrival in west London was confirmed last Wednesday.

The £10.1m attacking midfielder joins the many Danes already at Brentford, so where does he fit in at Thomas Frank’s side and what impact will he have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

THE HISTORY

Damsgaard is one of many exciting young talents to have emerged at FC Nordsjælland over recent times, alongside new Brentford colleague Mathias Jensen (£5.0m).

SeasonTeamDivisionAppsGoalsAssists
2021/22SampdoriaSerie A1100
2020/21SampdoriaSerie A3524
2019/20NordsjællandSuperliga35116
2018/19NordsjællandSuperliga3217
2017/18NordsjællandSuperliga1713

His third season of first-team football was outstanding, netting 11 times and setting up six more to ensure he was next off the production line. Italian side Sampdoria secured his services for the 2020/21 campaign.

The link between Damsgaard and Eriksen began in the summer of 2021 when, on the second day of Euro 2020, Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during the match with Finland. Whilst recovering in hospital, in came Damsgaard as his replacement in the starting XI for the remainder of the tournament.

After a wonderful strike against Russia, he was responsible for a very scary moment experienced by England fans. It was his free-kick that put the Danes 1-0 up in the Wembley semi-final, although Gareth Southgate’s side eventually emerged as victors.

Shortly after, his career was put in jeopardy by an unfortunate series of injuries back at Sampdoria. Initially ruled out in October 2021 with a thigh injury picked up on international duty, he then underwent knee surgery and later discovered that he had a worrying arthritis condition.

“It was a very aggressive form of arthritis. There was no improvement, it felt like it was never going to heal, but thanks to the collaboration between Italian and Danish rheumatologists, a new therapy was designed and gave an excellent response.” – agent Jens Orgaard

Thankfully, he returned to action in April of this year but only managed to gather 576 minutes of game time over 11 league appearances.

PLAYING STYLE

It’s therefore easy to assume that Damsgaard is a similar player to Eriksen, making this a like-for-like replacement. However, this is not the case.

Whilst Eriksen is more of a passer with set-piece strengths and great vision, Damsgaard likes to dribble and isn’t afraid to get stuck into the defensive duties. The Athletic have specifically looked at this comparison.

Damsgaard is more of a traditional winger than central attacking midfielder. He likes to receive the ball by the touchline down his team’s left flank on his right foot, which opens up space for him to drive inside towards goal.

This ability to drive at opponents and dribble past them contrasts with the skill set of Eriksen, who prefers to dictate play from deep with his passing.

Additionally, his new team scored the second-fewest goals from outside of the box, meaning Damsgaard’s penchant for long-range stunners will add a new dimension to the line-up.

WHERE DAMSGAARD FITS IN AT BRENTFORD

As Yoane Wissa (£5.5m) and fellow new signing Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.5m) also favour the left flank, perhaps Frank has a different idea for this versatile player.

He himself is a head coach who often switches between a four-man and three-man defence, with both systems already used during these opening two matches.

“We think Mikkel can play as one of our ‘eights’ in a 4-3-3 system or as a ‘ten’. He can also play on the wing. We will use him in the way we think we can get the best out of his offensive abilities. Importantly, he is a player that will fit into our dressing room. He is a great character, he wants to work hard, he wants to work for the team, and he wants to develop.” – Thomas Frank

When combining Damsgaard’s injury-plagued 12 months with the excellent midfield starts for both Jensen and Josh Dasilva (£4.6m), there could definitely be an easing-in process for the 22-year-old.

Yet the introduction of such an exciting signing could also put off potential Dasilva purchasers. Some will just be happy to use Dasilva as a bench option whose imminent double-rise will increase squad value but, beyond that, frequent starts cannot be guaranteed.

IS DAMSGAARD WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Managers should at least wait until they’ve seen Damsgaard make his first start. If it happens quickly, he’ll be a strong differential option when considering Brentford’s brilliant run of fixtures.

Starting from Gameweek 3, they top our Season Ticker all the way up to Gameweek 16.

Furthermore, he joins Pascal Gross (£5.6m), Brenden Aaronson (£5.5m), Joe Aribo (£5.5m) and Pablo Fornals (£5.5m) at the ideal price point for those intending to replace Pedro Neto (£5.5m).

FPL Marc Broadcaster, writer and overthinker. Hoping that ‘differential potential’ will catch on.

      Looks solid- only comments are:

Not convinced on DaSilva purely from a minutes perspective...too many decent options in the Brentford midfield

On a WC I might possibly consider KDB over Salah...I know it's Salah and only 2 games in but just have a feeling Liverpool are not going to be at City's level this year

Appreciate the comments. DaSilva has been a gem! Happy he’s on the bench. I do love KDB. Consider no Salah often but just not sure which player scores for Pool.

Interesting team! Are you moving towards replacing Foden with KDB? If so perhaps Saka -> Martinelli in advance? (then maybe Mount downgrade to support it? Otherwise, Robbo -> James is looking fairly safe.

I'd need to drop both Saka and Mount to 6m players to do Foden to KDB. Not worth it imo.

Fair enough. KDB-Martinelli-Rodrigo/Gross would have fetched you more than double the points of Foden-Saka-Mount. Third spot remains to be seen but KDB & Martinelli should be spot on for the season you'd think.

      12 is wildcardable.

But also if you are doing a wildcard you should be making the additional clean up transfers which would take it to 20-24

Let's settle this and have a vote irrespective if Bailey starts for Villa or is on the Villa bench.

Do you still want him on your bench in GW3 losing pounds? Those 0.1's up and down on a player you will be shipping GW3 is staring you in the face. If you have Bailey GW3 you could posdibly still be sitting with him GW4.

    Yes or no?

It all depends on your team. I can go with Bailey on the bench and take a 0.1m drop in price in favor of 1 free transfer. Many players can't do the same.

Yes depends on your team of course but at the rate all the posts are shipping him out, many post after many suggests having him GW3 is lose lose.

His price will definitely drop tonight. The question is who can replace him? Aaronson is tempting but I need 0.5m to upgrade and I am forced to make 2 FT if I want him.

priority is always to remove falling players. he isnt starting and got to protect TV

i see some people asking whether they should move on Mount for Maddy for example, but Bailey out is far more priority

      1. Andy_Social
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 5 days ago

Hazz has got it right - it depends on your team, like so many decisions. Having a blanket attitude of 'must-have' or 'must-sell' regardless of circumstances is just lazy and poor FPL-ing. The key point is not 'Aargh, I might lose 0.1 in TV'; the key question is 'will a move that involves losing Bailey improve my squad?'.

I've been seeing so many horrific posts advocating selling Bailey for an equally useless 5.0 mid or DaSilva. These are players who won't get any more points than Bailey. Now if you have 2FT and are faced with either getting another 5m in or burning the transfer, than there's no harm in doing the transfer, but if it's to use up a valuable transfer, you're better off benching Bailey. For myself, my default formation is 532 with Bailey and Andreas on the bench and my priority is to strengthen my defence, so Bailey does absolutely no harm sat on my bench.

        1. Dr. Rog
          • 16 Years
          4 years, 5 days ago

all good points. the key thing regarding bailey is the fact that he is 5mln. he isnt expected to pull up trees for that price (nor are his replacements). its much worse if you have a darwin or vardy who are expensive but stinking up the team. but i dont like fallers because the 0.1-0.2 is a problem that manifests later on. not priority, but certainly desirable transfer.

So difficult what to do. Should I move for Martinelli or get rid of Digne? .5 ITB 2FT

    Ward(Iversen)

    TAA - Cancelo - Trippier - Digne ( Neco )

    Salah - Kulu - Saka - Aaronson ( Andreas )

    Haaland - Jesus ( Dervisoglu)

Any improvements to be had here:

    Ederson ward
    Cancelo Trent trippier perisic williams
    Salah diaz martinelli Neto Bailey
    Haaland Jesus greenwood

Nervous about not having james. And not so happy about perisic, Neto, Bailey.

    Any good options?

    Hey FFS Community,

    First post on here!

138 points after my first two weeks of fantasy ever! 2nd in my 20 person mini league (TY FFS!)

    Ramsdale
    TAA; Cancelo; Robbo; Walker; Neco
    Salah; Mount; Martinelli; Andreas; DaSilva
    Haaland; Jesus; Archer
    (.5 in bank)
    (1 FT)

Robbo --> James? Is this a good move?

I think I am going to roll with Mount for at least one more week. Leeds is a bottom 5 defense. If he does not perform, what 8m (or less) MID should I replace him with?

What's the skinny on Lamptey around starts?

He came on for Trossard last match. Was he previously lacking match fitness, and will likely start instead of Trossard at RWB soon?

He's a fantasyfootballhub favourite but on here we like Digne Bailey and Neto

Stay away imo, they're on form and he's injury prone and erratic minutes

I feel compelled to write on liverpool as there is a certain thread aimed at misleading you all that has been hulked. This thread will not be hulked o can assure you.

Why am I writing this post? Two reasons. First, I am right. Second you won't listen anyway, which benefits me and others like me because we are right.

Now then. Certain people on here would have you believe that liverpool are done and Salah is not worth his price tag. They peddle a narrative that mane was key to our success and with him gone we are done for. This is why, they say, we have started so poorly and you better listen now or else you are done.

Here is why they are very wrong and you would do well to keep Salah and other liverpool assets.

First mane is not as good as they will have you believe. I will use stats and eye test to explain. Here are manes stats since he has been in liverpool in the prem

    13 goals 5 assists total 18
    10 goals 7 assists total 17
    22 goals 1 assist total 23
    18 goals 7 assists total 25
    11 goals 7 assists total 18
    16 goals 2 assists total 18

You will notice that the two years in the middle are his best. These are the only years that are remotely comparable to Salah. His first two years and last two years are almost identical which means the middle is his peak. For some reason when people on here think of mane they picture peak mane for 6 years straight. This is not true. The stats show he has tailed off. That output is replaceable.

What about eye test? Year one. Explosive. Could beat a man. Drew attention from defenses and created space for others. End product okay.

Year two. Same as above. No winder salahs best season was this one. Defences too focused on mane.

Year three. Same as above with an improved end product. More attention on Salah meant mane could get more space and output is his best for goals.

Year four. Same as above. Best output over all.

Year five. Lost a yard of pace. Couldn't beat a man. Output in decline. Massive decline as a footballer.

    Year 6. Same as above.

    What about Salah?

    32 goals 10 assists total 42
    22 goals 8 assists total 30
    19 goals 10 assists total 29
    22 goals 5 assists total 27
    23 goals 13 assists total 36

Unlike mane, Salahs best years are his first and last year. If manesxgraph is a mountain then salahs is a valley which bodes well for the year ahead. Why was his first year so good? Because he was an unknown quantity and defences gave him too much space. He adjusts to them well enough to remain prolific despite being marked more closely. Salahs worst output is still stronger than manes best. Think about that for a moment. He is not in decline. If anything last season proves he is getting stronger.

Diaz is closer to prime mane than mane is in occupying defenders and Salah could have more space than ever with the addition of Nunez. He has always been a shoot first player who gets assists and that won't change this season.

Why have we started slowly then? The sane reason we didn't finish second two years ago. We have 9 players injured. 9. I repeat again 9. This is why we are conceding. This is why we are not prolific up front. Yes our midfield is old but elliot and Carvalho are good enough to play there and they will provide the energy that is missing. When 9 players come back and they will because none are long term. Liverpool will score freely again. But even if the world caves in like it did two years ago, I know Salah gets at least 25 goal contributions because that's what he has always done. Write us off at your peril

Fair argument. The salient question, however, is will Liverpool start winning to nil imminently, or only after a number of those injured players are back? If we're talking a month away, might as well sell off now and wildcard them back in later.

As a more general observation, there is a shocking amount of ignorant advice on this forum (not judging the specific thread you refer to). A golden rule I adhere to is to never ever ever take advice from a know-nothing on here. There are plenty people with a decent track record and of sound mind who analyse FPL on YouTube. I listen to them.

I wouldn't have started with two liverpool defenders because clean sheets are typically harder to come by at the start of the season so yes I would move off robbo but selling Salah because he won't outperform kdb is nonsense

Some people listen to hot topics on here sadly because someone writes an opinion and then there is an echo chamber and then a mod makes it green and before you know it many have given up on liverpool. Then in a few weeks time I will say I told you so and people will say no you didn't or we never said sell salah
