We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Manchester United v Liverpool in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-improving website, and our own Premium Members Area.

Manchester United produced an excellent display against the odds in Gameweek 3, as they deservedly beat Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Against a backdrop of supporter unrest, Erik ten Hag’s side came out of the blocks flying, with Anthony Elanga (£4.9m) hitting the post before his cut-back found Jadon Sancho (£7.3m) to tap in.

A revitalised Marcus Rashford (£6.3m) added a second after the break, before Mohamed Salah’s (£13.0m) late header set up a frantic finale.

Taking the brave decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.4m) and captain Harry Maguire (£4.9m), ten Hag set his troops up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Sancho, Elanga and the out-of-position Rashford looking to get in behind Liverpool’s backline at every opportunity.

Above: Manchester United’s average position map v Liverpool in Gameweek 3, featuring Jadon Sancho (no 25), Anthony Elanga (36) and Marcus Rashford (10)

“We know Liverpool are a really good team and you need to press them. You have to do that out of a block and need energy, that is why we went with Rashford, Sancho and Elanga.” – Erik ten Hag on his line-up before kick-off

As for Rashford, the 24-year-old has already suffered two price drops since the start of the season, but looked dangerous on Monday, netting his first Premier League goal since January.

He nearly got a second, too, as he cut through the Liverpool defence and lashed a shot narrowly over the bar.

Notably, no player from either side registered more goal attempts (five), shots in the box (five) or efforts on target (two) than Rashford.

“I felt I was in some good positions throughout the game, if you are not in the areas you will never get the chances. For me it is about my mentality, when I am happy and feel happy I will play well, score goals and help the team. When we win I am always happy, we have to keep working hard and keep pushing.” – Marcus Rashford

“In their mindset they may think I cannot do all the defending work and threat in offence but today you can see they can do it, it has to be a way of life and they will get stronger. When we press this way, it is difficult for opponents to get out and play their football. When you win the ball, you can get in behind, dribble behind, make combinations and it makes football fun for them. That is what I saw and they get the rewards. It starts with the mindset, they understand this is that attitude they have to bring, it starts in the preparation.” – Erik ten Hag on Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford

Elsewhere, Tyrell Malacia (£4.4m) was excellent at left-back and took some corners and free-kicks, while Casemiro was introduced to fans before kick-off, with ten Hag saying “He is the cement between the stones, that is what we have been looking for in the summer and we found him.”

Tonight was an encouraging all-round performance that United will now look to build on, as they visit Southampton in Saturday’s Gameweek 4 opener.

“It makes me happy that Rashford and Sancho got the goals. Fernandes took the responsibility and the captaincy encouraged him. He showed leadership with Varane. They made a huge difference. It is not just them; we need more leaders. When you want to win you need leaders and the spirit we showed today.

I am happy with the performance but we have to bring it every game. Don’t just bring it against Liverpool. Every Premier League game is difficult, we need to bring it to every game. It starts, once again, with the spirit.

I have a squad and we have to use the squad. We play 50-60 games, from game-to-game we will see what team we will pick. I don’t have to mention Maguire and Ronaldo – they are amazing players and they will play a role in the future and the short-term future as well. We have the right players, I am convinced of that. The window is not closed and you need numbers and also quality.” – Erik ten Hag

Liverpool’s disappointing start to the season continued in Gameweek 3, with an indifferent display that saw them struggle to cope with the hosts’ intensity.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp’s side now have just two points from their opening three matches, with mounting injury problems leaving them vulnerable at the back.

Indeed, Joel Matip (£5.9m), Ibrahima Konate (£4.9m), Thiago Alcantara (£5.3m), Naby Keita (£4.9m) and Diogo Jota (£8.9m) were all missing at Old Trafford, plus several squad players and the suspended Darwin Nunez (£9.0m).

“We are in a tricky situation injury wise, we got through the week with 14, 15 senior players available and now have to make sure they don’t get injured. We should have won this game, I know it sounds ridiculous but that is how I saw it. I am concerned about our situation, but that is how it is. We prepare for Bournemouth and Newcastle now.” – Jurgen Klopp

“It’s been a really poor start to the season – we’re giving every team a goal start, and you can’t keep going behind. They wanted something to lift the crowd and the team and we gave it to them. Two points from nine is not the start that we wanted and we need to pick the performances up individually and collectively.” – Andrew Robertson

Despite those issues, Salah netted his second goal of the season after United failed to clear a corner, as he banked eight FPL points for his owners.

The Egyptian also posted some decent underlying stats, including three shots in the box, four created chances and nine penalty box touches.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Dalot (Wan-Bissaka 86), Varane, Martinez, Malacia; Eriksen (van de Beek 86), McTominay; Elanga (Martial 45), Fernandes, Sancho (Fred 71); Rashford (Ronaldo 86)

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Robertson (Tsimikas 85); Henderson (Fabinho 59), Milner (Carvalho 73), Elliott; Salah, Diaz, Firmino

    Quick Poll:
    A) DaSilva to Aaronson for a hit and bench Andreas?
    B) Stick and Play Andreas
    C) Stick and Play DaSilva

(Can afford any Leeds mid in A but prefer Aaronson + cash)

Any ideas here please chaps? 2FTs and 0.3ITB:

    Ward
    Trent | Cancelo | Castagne
    Salah | Martinelli | Aaronson | Dasilva
    Kane | Haaland | Jesus

    Iversen | Andreas | Neco | Patterson

    Thanks

Double Leicester def is a glaring issue, but not much you can do with big up top and the minimal cash ITB.

Only thing I can think of is Kane, Dasilva out to Kulu, Toney and sort a new def/gk next week for ward/castagne or for a hit this week

This is tough because, like me and every other Ward/Iverson keeper combo owner, you know Iverson has to go for a £4.5 you can play every week instead of Ward.

But, realistically, as you are £0.3m short of doing that in one move (also like me) you now have to sacrifice someone else to fund rectifying this horrific mistake.

There’s really only 3 players you can shift isn’t there?

      For now Castagne to Saliba.

But I'd look to upgrade Dasilva and your GK soon. Easiest way is to downgrade Kane or Haaland to someone like Toney and use the funds to strengthen those 2 positions

Anyone else basically now in the last chance saloon with several of their players?

I’m tempted to WC, but also torn between feeling I should give Mount and TAA one more week before I ditch them.

Ward and Iverson also needs updating, but no money to do it in 1 move and not sure taking a hit is the answer considering my OR is an abysmal 3,248,351.

So, I either take a hit now and it’s Mount or TAA gone, save 2 FT for next week when I can get rid of one of those to upgrade Iverson, or WC and hope the bandwagons I’m going to jump on are going to keep rolling…..

    Decisions, decisions

There’s some issues in mine (no city attack, Walker over Cancelo, having to play Dasilva, Andreas or Neco each week, etc) but I’m really trying to be patient and not take heaps of points chasing hits, as that worked for me last year. I think there’s benefit in holding out on WC to gw8.

I’d save this week as TAA and Mount are due, and use the 2FTs to upgrade GK next week.

I have Mount and TAA but I'm going to give them this week to do something, given their fixtures. Even if they come up short again, I wouldn't wildcard just for those two - I'd have to have at least 5 changes I wanted to make to justify the WC.

Oh and don't worry about your OR in GW3.

Im now on a WC and sorting the Leicester keepers was also a priority. Pool and Chel defences both leaky so went with keeping James rather than Trent and boosting midfield. Have never personally felt GW4 is too early to WC if you see some good opportunities after three weeks info

Same boat as me, cannot upgrade keepers as 0ITB, and would need to downgrade defender to free up funds.

      Mount gets one more week.

I pulled an early WC last week for the same reasons, only had 4/5 players I wasn't huge on but with the free transfers during World Cup felt it was low risk.

Happy with my set up now.

Typical FPL. Going to end in tears. Selling TAA before Bournmouth at home!? Mount before Leicester at home!?
I see people saying they are going to sell Robbo too. Or Diaz. People are so reactionary and emotional. Have some patience. Thats my 2 cents at least, and I know nothing. GL.

      Thanks guys.

I agree, holding this week is the best policy. I pulled the trigger on Aaronson last week, and look where that got me.

Don’t need to WC yet and taking hits isn’t a good long term strategy, so holding and hoping that my patience with both of them pays off this weekend.

If not, at least I can make changes without incurring points hits.

For me Saka and Alexander-Arnold are the biggest disappointments of this season so far because I had high expectations for them. I didn't expect 3 blanks by Neto either, so I'm really not sure if all of them will stay in my team until next GW. There are players I want and I'd like to make my team less template.

I never had Neto as Wolves really don’t score many goals, so I could see him not doing anything.

But Mount, and TAA, with those early fixtures, yeah, I was expecting some returns.

These are players we know can haul at any given time, so it’s frustrating to just get blanks from them in what ostensibly were plum fixtures (aside from Mount v Spurs).

Was performing way above his underlying data in the first 2 where he scored in both games. People got excited and jumped on the bandwagon thinking it was sustainable. Was never a good transfer to make

Andreas and Neco are better bench fodder options. Don't think Dasilva will play as often and most likely to continue to get 1-2 points keeping in line with his data

Loads of people knee jerked him in after 2 goals in first 2 games (myself included), and have now realised he’s gash and his goals were flukey.
Also wanting the cheap in-form Leeds mids make him the relatively easy makeweight.

People are shifting formation from 5 at the back to 4, hence one of 4.5 midfielders needs to go. Andreas looks like better option so managers are selling the other one which is Dasilva i assume...

Think he'll start. Plus it's a game where Chelsea will likely score.

    Haaland, Jesus, Toney

Perhaps Saliba up to Zinchenko but think I'd rather keep the cash for Transfer flexibility in the coming weeks.

Playing price rises and fixtures here - don't think Rodrigo stays long term.

Feel free to pick it apart 🙂 thanks

      It's good.

Personally would prefer another defender over Trippier for the next 2 and bring him back for gw6 (seeing as you're on a wildcard now) but holding on to Trips isn't the worst move either

I'll probably bench Trip next week, and play Aaronson instead FWIW.

Isn't £50m for Neto very cheap considering he's contracted till 2027?

Not cheap at all considering hes been injured all of last season and hasnt played to past levels as yet this season. Id say its a bit steep for a player who has had 1 good season.

You're thinking from an Arsenal perspective. I'm not saying Arsenal should pay the money. I would have thought any team would be priced out by the fact he's just signed a new contract.

I think the quality of the player is a big factor, not the just number of years left on the contract. Just depends if Wolves are looking to sell but 50m would be more than fair.

Wolves only get these young talented players because it's kinda accepted they'll let them go if a "bigger" team comes in, just like Jota

Not exactly, but 50m is more than fair and they've signed enough attackers anyway

It's not about what's fair. As I said above, I wouldn't expect clubs to agree a fee as the selling price would be too high right now unless Wolves were desperate to sell.

But another year playing for Wolves could be very useful for them, and may even increase his value much faster than it would decrease from his contract running down 4/5 of its years. See my reply below to Arteta

Ofcourse its a factor in the point you are making. The valuation of the player = 1.Quality of the player, 2 Number of years left on the contract (less important, 6 vs 4 years wont make too much difference in price if 1.remains the same), and 3. Supply/demand of similar players in the market.

This is all already very obvious.

Let's assume Neto is desirable for all these factors, to the degree that a club might be willing to pay £25m to compensate Wolves for terminating the final year of his contract so he can join their club instead right now, and Wolves were willing to 'sell' for that price.

How much more would fairly compensate Wolves (in their eyes) if he had 2 years left, or 3, or 4, or 5? This is what I'm interested in discussing, and why I started the thread.

Also how would that be different to the fee that the buying club would be willing to pay at those different contract lengths. I would suppose that the longer left on the contract, the less likely an agreement can be made, particularly for an integral asset with potential.

If you know of any examples of transfers of players with long contract lengths, I would be interested to look into them.

He fits the criteria Arteta and Edu have set. I'd trust them with whoever they want to sign, because the difference between manager's first game in charge and now is insane. They know what they're doing and Neto is young, eager to learn and can become a top player in a few years.

            A deal could be £40m + 15m add-ons/bonuses. I think that's reasonable price in today's market.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear Wolves asking for £50m with 2 years left on his contract. Yet he has 5 years left.... Wolves have just made an investment in (keeping) him; i.e. they aren't looking to sell.

So my point is just that I'm surprised about the asking price, and would like to understand more about how these things work. Do you know of many other coveted players sold with long contracts remaining?

            1. @persecuted_by_mods

They sold Jota for 45+4 million with only 4m upfront, he had 3 years left on his contract and had done better than Neto has so far

I think Wolves fans see Neto as having better potential than Jota https://www.molineux.news/transfer-news/wolves-should-be-demanding-more-than-reported-50-million-for-pedro-neto/

Another year, as I said above, and he could be worth a lot more than now, and more than Jota in footballing terms, and still have more time on the contract that Jota did.

I do too, but fans don't have a say in transfers and Wolves' whole model recently with the close connection with the agents has allowed them to sign young talents they normally wouldn't be able to attract, with the understanding that Wolves won't stand in the way if a bigger team comes in, 50m sounds about right to me as anything above that could be seen by Neto and those other players as being priced out

Thats how I see it anyway

50m sounds about right to you, but you don't have any say in transfers. Wolves fans think it should be more, but they don't have any say in transfers. I guess it's just a meaningless conversation then? 😀

I'm just trying to figure out the mechanisms at play.

Neto was contracted for another 3 years, and just extended to 5 years. He surely knows that will raise his valuation and potentially price him out of a move right now? Or will it?

I guess the explanation with the agent works out because it is a lower valuation than would be expected between parties that don't have a well-oiled money asset-shifting scheme in place. The risk of the long-term deal is lower for all parties than normal, as it's just a way of inflating the price, but not so much that it blocks business being done as they can cap it at the highest price the buyer is willing to pay. A loss on the 'true' value of Neto at this point is still a gain on the value if he didn't sign the extension, so better to sign the contract and potentially get a little extra.

Yeah it makes some sense, but it relies a lot on trust and gentlemen's agreements, it seems, and I still think another year at Wolves seems like it would be better for Neto and Wolves

I could be way off the mark, but I'm trying to integrate what you're saying into my view here, so that's nice of me eh?

                        1. @persecuted_by_mods
                            3 years, 7 months ago

Well yeah that part is meaningless, Wolves aren't listening to their fans or anyone else when it comes to valuation of a player

This is just from what I've read over the years so I don't have a source to hand but he wouldn't have signed any deal with Wolves without the gentleman's agreement, thus any contract extensions don't negate the original understanding of "I would normally not play for Wolves but will sign with you if you let me leave for a bigger club as soon as they're in for me and I want to actually leave and join them"

I agree with you, I think Wolves would be better off if they kept him but maybe the coach doesn't feel the same way, or as I suspect the agreement in place means Wolves have no real say other than to wish him well and let him go

Thanks for your input. Must be a bit tricky with that kind of agreement, considering that Wolves still have to get a good price (as opposed to accepting any offer, or a release clause (which is the normal way to formalise this type of agreement), or trying to get the highest possible fee, which is also normal).

                              Nice display name 🙂

If you want to finish with a good rank you have to remain logically and not let emotions control, do not focus on the fact that 5 at the back did not preform this week, focus on the model saying 5 at the back predicts the most points because of the value of wingbacks.

If you want to be logical, you should stop catagorising things so much, like 5 'at the back' and the value of 'wingbacks', as it reduces the resolution with which you can see the picture and make decisions

Having 5 defenders at the back who are mostly wingbacks from the top 5 teams is the best formation for scoring points, because of the value.

Judging players on individual merits is the only way to make good decisions. You already flouted your own wingback requirement by admitting they aren't all wingbacks ('mostly').

If I judge each player on their individual value in terms of points per million, that leads to the calculation that best players to have in your team are TAA Canelo James Cucurella Perasic, would you look at that they are all wingbacks from top 5 team, unbelievable.

That was bad spelling lol i was typing too fast you know what I mean, also I said not all wings backs not because 5 wingbacks isn't the best value for money, but because you might needs 4.5 players like Saliba or Dunk as enablers which are also by the way extremely good value players for 4.5 another reason to play 5 at the back.

The 4.5m defender value is the same every year, yet 5 at the back has never been optimal.

                        Yes, exactly.

I don't agree with the result, necessarily, but I agree with the process. The individual players are very important. Just saying that 5 at the back predicts the most points because of the value of wingbacks is useless imo. What if you don't buy the right ones?

Not to mention that at least 3/5 aren't wingbacks (although James can be and may be going forward). Could be 4/5 if Cucurella still plays LCB as well.

I currently have TAA Cancelo James Perisic Saliba and if I could afford it I would replace Saliba with Cucurella.

Like the fact you’ve managed to include cancelo and salah/ KdB/ Haaland. Looks good. I’d probably prefer Sanchez due to Brighton defence. Could you upgrade Jensen if you moved Zinc to Saliba?

              2 FT

              A) Bailey to Gross
              B) Bailey + Ramsdale to Rodrigo + Sanchez

I dont fancy losing Ramsdale ahaed of 2 home fixtures, but Rodrigo is tempting plus Sanchez for now doing better than Ramsdale. What do you think?

I’d prefer B, But i took out Ramsdale and it backfired lol. Isn’t Rodrigo more attacking than Gross too?

In past few gameweeks I’ve managed to take out Jesus, Trippier, Ramsdale, and Diaz before they’ve returned and replaced with 1-2 pointers; Additionally getting a Darwin red.

I’m liking the failing this season,

I also had your Darwin -2 so don't stress about it now.
