We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Manchester United v Liverpool in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-improving website, and our own Premium Members Area.

Manchester United produced an excellent display against the odds in Gameweek 3, as they deservedly beat Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Against a backdrop of supporter unrest, Erik ten Hag’s side came out of the blocks flying, with Anthony Elanga (£4.9m) hitting the post before his cut-back found Jadon Sancho (£7.3m) to tap in.

A revitalised Marcus Rashford (£6.3m) added a second after the break, before Mohamed Salah’s (£13.0m) late header set up a frantic finale.

Taking the brave decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.4m) and captain Harry Maguire (£4.9m), ten Hag set his troops up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Sancho, Elanga and the out-of-position Rashford looking to get in behind Liverpool’s backline at every opportunity.

Above: Manchester United’s average position map v Liverpool in Gameweek 3, featuring Jadon Sancho (no 25), Anthony Elanga (36) and Marcus Rashford (10)

“We know Liverpool are a really good team and you need to press them. You have to do that out of a block and need energy, that is why we went with Rashford, Sancho and Elanga.” – Erik ten Hag on his line-up before kick-off

As for Rashford, the 24-year-old has already suffered two price drops since the start of the season, but looked dangerous on Monday, netting his first Premier League goal since January.

He nearly got a second, too, as he cut through the Liverpool defence and lashed a shot narrowly over the bar.

Notably, no player from either side registered more goal attempts (five), shots in the box (five) or efforts on target (two) than Rashford.

“I felt I was in some good positions throughout the game, if you are not in the areas you will never get the chances. For me it is about my mentality, when I am happy and feel happy I will play well, score goals and help the team. When we win I am always happy, we have to keep working hard and keep pushing.” – Marcus Rashford

“In their mindset they may think I cannot do all the defending work and threat in offence but today you can see they can do it, it has to be a way of life and they will get stronger. When we press this way, it is difficult for opponents to get out and play their football. When you win the ball, you can get in behind, dribble behind, make combinations and it makes football fun for them. That is what I saw and they get the rewards. It starts with the mindset, they understand this is that attitude they have to bring, it starts in the preparation.” – Erik ten Hag on Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford

Elsewhere, Tyrell Malacia (£4.4m) was excellent at left-back and took some corners and free-kicks, while Casemiro was introduced to fans before kick-off, with ten Hag saying “He is the cement between the stones, that is what we have been looking for in the summer and we found him.”

Tonight was an encouraging all-round performance that United will now look to build on, as they visit Southampton in Saturday’s Gameweek 4 opener.

“It makes me happy that Rashford and Sancho got the goals. Fernandes took the responsibility and the captaincy encouraged him. He showed leadership with Varane. They made a huge difference. It is not just them; we need more leaders. When you want to win you need leaders and the spirit we showed today.

I am happy with the performance but we have to bring it every game. Don’t just bring it against Liverpool. Every Premier League game is difficult, we need to bring it to every game. It starts, once again, with the spirit.

I have a squad and we have to use the squad. We play 50-60 games, from game-to-game we will see what team we will pick. I don’t have to mention Maguire and Ronaldo – they are amazing players and they will play a role in the future and the short-term future as well. We have the right players, I am convinced of that. The window is not closed and you need numbers and also quality.” – Erik ten Hag

Liverpool’s disappointing start to the season continued in Gameweek 3, with an indifferent display that saw them struggle to cope with the hosts’ intensity.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp’s side now have just two points from their opening three matches, with mounting injury problems leaving them vulnerable at the back.

Indeed, Joel Matip (£5.9m), Ibrahima Konate (£4.9m), Thiago Alcantara (£5.3m), Naby Keita (£4.9m) and Diogo Jota (£8.9m) were all missing at Old Trafford, plus several squad players and the suspended Darwin Nunez (£9.0m).

“We are in a tricky situation injury wise, we got through the week with 14, 15 senior players available and now have to make sure they don’t get injured. We should have won this game, I know it sounds ridiculous but that is how I saw it. I am concerned about our situation, but that is how it is. We prepare for Bournemouth and Newcastle now.” – Jurgen Klopp

“It’s been a really poor start to the season – we’re giving every team a goal start, and you can’t keep going behind. They wanted something to lift the crowd and the team and we gave it to them. Two points from nine is not the start that we wanted and we need to pick the performances up individually and collectively.” – Andrew Robertson

Despite those issues, Salah netted his second goal of the season after United failed to clear a corner, as he banked eight FPL points for his owners.

The Egyptian also posted some decent underlying stats, including three shots in the box, four created chances and nine penalty box touches.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Dalot (Wan-Bissaka 86), Varane, Martinez, Malacia; Eriksen (van de Beek 86), McTominay; Elanga (Martial 45), Fernandes, Sancho (Fred 71); Rashford (Ronaldo 86)

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Robertson (Tsimikas 85); Henderson (Fabinho 59), Milner (Carvalho 73), Elliott; Salah, Diaz, Firmino

Yes, clean sheets will not be very popular with any team this season.

I honestly believe a solid midfield and solid front three is where the points value will come from this season.

        1. Arteta
          • 10 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

Anyone could have a solid cheap defensive line-up like Raya, Cucurella, Trippier, Emerson, Saliba, Dunk - we just aren't prepared to ignore historically the best assets. It's ain't easy when you have flashbacks of their past monster hauls and remember how good these players actually are in real life.

It's not the number of defenders that bothers me; it's the state of the clubs they're turning out for at the moment that I'm concerned about. My 6 at the back (inc GK) are from 3 teams:
Liverpool - main issue is midfield. Continued injuries will impact defence, and ETH exposed a weakness in TAA/Gomez positioning. I make no changes for BOU, but will need to see a marked improvement.
Chelsea - midfield problem again. Big mistake trying to get Gallagher to play the Kante role. It's just not his game. Chelsea's defence may struggle until Kante is back. I also think that from front to back, Chelsea are underprepared and awaiting further recruitments. But due to the next fitures, I can wait for the window to close and assess how the team will be going forward.
City - Pep (and everybody) was caught out by Howe getting at them - nobody does that to City! Pep unlikely to be fooled twice, but I can see Vieria instructing Zaha to go at Walker.

For me this week then, keep City defence, give Liverpool the BOU game first. Chelsea - be a bit worried but don't change anything yet.

Well written Andy. We also picked those players for longer period and we often seem to forget that.

Thanks. Yes, the longer term and the shorter term in terms of upcoming fixtures. We still need to be attentive to changing circumstances, and I feel we have that at Liverpool and Chelsea. The question is, how quickly will they resolve themselves? I feel at least one more week's data is required to address those questions.

Even if Liverpool manages to pick themselves up a bit, does it still justify paying so much for TAA?
This year we have lower prices for GK's and Defenders, and TAA is so expensive.
When Liverpool had a stable game with lots of CS's and stable defense and midfield, TAA had more room to be offensive.
He we still be offensive ofc, but not as much as he was able previous seasons. Also, how does this situation affect the Salah's game?
His price is high, but there aren't that many viable premiums for now, as Bruno and CR7 are a non-aset for now and Son a Kane haven't really convinced also for now.
It seems that Salah/KDB will remain the main premiums, along with Haaland (unless Peps starts messing up with him).

You raise some key issues. I feel with BOU up next, I can afford at least one more game to see if any answers emerge. When Trent is at the top of his game, he outscores all defenders and all but the most expensive mids, so at his best, he's insane value. But he's not there right now. It's a risk to sell him or WC him out because if he hits his form soon after, you can't get him back in. But how patient should we be? That's the dilemma.

I think squad quality will come good soon...So going for atleast 4 defenders out of : Pool, City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs is not a bad option at all. Fixtures are good.

      Injured
      RCB in weakened defence
      Not even playing
      Sitting deeper
      Where's his form gone?

Pattern = none of them looking as hot as last year?

besides Arsenal, Brighton defence (and Leeds) plus Perisic and Trippier all the premiums defenders combined were outscored by Bailey.

never mind Andreas. just shows how week to week the advice on here can be wide of the mark.

If there's a learning point from last week.

I guess the beauty in football is anything can happen. which means being dogmatic doesn't help.

But last year over the course of a season defenders were the best points per million, that suggests that you should have defenders in your team.

Yeah I know, was kind of just playing Devil's advocate here. I have no doubt that Trent & the usual suspects will come good eventually, and I'm always on the lookout for a bargain at the back like maybe Sessegnon or Konate if they manage to nail down a spot

2 free transfers for this lot...

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo James Perisic
    Salah Martinelli Kulu Bailey
    Haaland Jesus

    Ward Williams Periera Archer

Was hoping to do Ramsdale & Bailey to Sanchez & Rodrigo but 0.4 short. Would it be mad to take a hit for James to Cucurella in order to fund it?

I’m ready to WC but hoping I can be saved from a rash decision. Son has been disappointing to say the least, Haaland is missing from my squad and Watkins needs to be replaced by Toney ASAP. Is there any way of salvaging this team and save my mini league or is it WC time? 2.6M ITB & 1 FT

    Mendy (Begovic)
    N. Williams Zinchenko Cancelo TAA (Shcar)
    Martinelli Dasilva Son Salah (Murphy)
    Watkins Jesus (Taylor)

      Toney Jesus Haaland

I wouldn't bring Haaland in now personally. Pep has more or less said he won't play every game once the UCL starts. Now, he may still get big points in the weeks that he *does* play, but for his price I'd want someone I can rely as a captain pick when needed.

Maybe so, he’s just hard to ignore with his next few fixtures. Anybody else you suggest up in the striker spot? A lot of people saying Kane

I think you would have to WC to implement the changes you want. The only thing is, I'd be a bit wary that you rip up your team for Haaland just before he starts sitting out every other game. But if you're happy to just switch him to Kane/Darwin & confident that 343 is the structure you want til the World Cup then sure, go for it, I think there's enough changes here to warrant it

Is it for definite he’s going to be in rotation these next few weeks? I know Pep warned of it but there’s still a lot of weeks ahead and free transfers at the World Cup to come

For those going away from big at the back, how was last seasons start in regard to clean sheets?

Its only been three games. Maybe the big at the back option would have been better after the world cup

We know City on average under Pep get a clean sheet once every two league games.

Chelseas defence looked vulnerable end of last season and now with new personnel even more so and Liverpool have injuries

Conte has tightened Spurs up. Arsenal were always decent for clean sheets and even Newcastle look stronger at the back

I still reckon Dias will outscore the likes of Rodrigo or Mitrovic throughout the season

Happy owning TAA, Cancelo & Perisic.
But getting cold feet on Robbo & James for now. They could be downgraded to 5m defs for money to be invested in attack.

the point is to be on the right players at the right time.

If you selected last seasons top scorers from the outset you still wouldn't win fpl.

The premium defence is supposed to be attacking returns plus clean sheets and bonus.

last season they did keep clean sheets. you are probably right over the course of the season but that does not mean altering course now isn't the best call.

I don't think James is a problem, but I do think Chelsea is a problem at the moment. Without proper midfield cover they are leaky at the back, and going forward (which is what we have James for) they are too ponderous. It was very disappointing to see that versus Leeds. Leeds are still playing Bielsaball and attacking with glorious abandon - which leaves them exposed to counters. It should have been meat & drink to James, but between the likes of RLC and Gallagher, the balls weren't being delivered.

I was also listening on the radio as the commentary wasn't brilliant and the x players there felt Leeds were much more solid and less likely to slug out a 4-3 swinging from the ropes.

think it was Pat Nevin who was pretty objective and I think he reads a game well.

I was also switching a bit between 5 Live and Talk Sport over the weekend.

Sunday's football was brilliant in terms of match play and yesterday.

Marsch has got Leeds far better organised than Bielsa did, and they press a little more thoughtfully, but a rapid counter with quality players would definitely expose them. I'm sure we'll see this in some games. I felt James and Cucurella could have taken advantage of that and I suspect Tuchel's poor tactics was due to the way he set up his midfield without Kante. It was just wrong.

If i wc i think id only make 2 or 3 changes so thats out the window - the only way i can see myself rising in ranks at the min is by people in the same boat as me taking hits - or unless i get lucky
