Throughout the 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors will be sharing their thoughts and own transfer plans.

Only Premium Members are able to read every single one of these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

Next up is seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar.

Gameweek 3 was a low-scoring one with the ‘big-at-the-back’ template failing to deliver. Meanwhile, picks from non-top six sides such as Rodrigo (£6.3m), Wilfried Zaha (£7.1m), Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.6m) and Ivan Toney (£7.2m) all delivered once again, proving that there is life outside of the template.

What’s happening at Liverpool?

FPL managers probably had memories of Liverpool’s 5-0 trouncing of Manchester United on their mind when the two sides met on Monday night but the game turned out very differently.

I was pleased to see Erik ten Hag adapt his possession-based, play-out-from-the-back philosophy for a more direct, counter-attacking approach and it paid dividends. They were helped to a large extent by Liverpool’s porous midfield which sorely missed the pair of Fabinho (£5.5m) and Thiago (£5.3m).

The centre-back partnership of Joe Gomez (£4.5m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) does not look assured and, as the below image shows, only Leicester City, Newcastle United and West Ham United have a worse rate of minutes per big chance conceded. Two of those sides have already had the misfortune of facing Manchester City, so such numbers are understandable but Liverpool have faced Fulham, Crystal Palace and Man United – not the most daunting schedule on paper.

We discussed a lot of the topics above and more on this week’s episode of The FPL Wire. Check it out here.

See you next week!

    Imagine all the people.
    Playin' for today.
    Woo! Hoo! Wooohooo.

    E$R Jesus $aka
    $$haka *Partey $degaard
    Zinchenko Gabriel $aliba Tomiyasu
    Ramsdale

    Martinelli Nketiah Neto
    Tielemans Elneny Vieira
    Tierney Holding White Cedric
    Turner

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one

    * Weak spots:
    - Elneny is a trusty backup only, while Lokonga looks more comfortable in the left 8 position for now

    $trong spots:
    - LW could have 4 top-quality players: ESR, Martinelli, Neto & Nketiah
    - RW even more!: Saka, Neto, Vieira, ESR, Jesus (& Marquinos)
    - Left 8 even more!!: Xhaka, Tielemans, Zinchenko, Odegaard, Vieira, ESR, & Lokonga
    - Odegaard's role could be covered by Vieira & ESR, which is still relatively strong
    - RCB has Saliba, White, Holding and even Tomiyasu to cover

    Next season highlights:
    - Balogun could bring quality & depth to the CF position
    - Maybe Patino will be ready to learn under Partey, though I think he's more of a Zinchenko.

Arsenal have a good, young, exciting squad which could fight for the title in a few seasons. Those who can't accept the truth right now will have to do it sooner rather than later. If the main ones stay and if club keep buying the right profile of players, developing and improving them - then the project will well and truly come together.

It is like when LFC signed Andy Robertson from Hull and everyone laughed about it.

One sage didn't laugh, me. Once again I'm not laughing, he isn't worth that much of course but he's a talented kid, annoying diving aside him and Richarlison basically carried the attack on their backs last year

Antony for sure, £90m is outrageously bad business. Even if he's somewhat good he'll never be able to repay that amount

Chelsea paying £60m will be forgotten as soon as they pay £80+ for Fofana, and when people realise koulibaly isn't better than Rudiger

If it happens, Gordon for £60m is the worst transfer I’ve seen in a long time. Especially when they are getting rid of Hudson-Odoi.

Antony is definitely overpriced but at least he’s proven himself under Ten Hag’s system and was one of the key players in Ajax last season.

I own Groß, and as reasonable an option as he is, I'm not sure I'd buy him. Think he's still a decent option this GW. Rodrigo from GW5 onwards though

Liverpool will struggle to get top 4 if another CM isn’t signed before the end of the window, in my opinion.

One or both of Henderson and Milner starting each week means teams will go into each match fancying themselves to win the midfield battle, both in terms of legs and technical quality.

Liverpool’s recruitment in that department is downright negligent.

Nunez is back GW5. Jota, Thiago, Konate, Jones all shouldn't be too far behind. That United defeat has exaggerated people's feelings..

Hendo is good but cannot shine in midfield of utterly poor Milner and still not consistent Elliott. You could say the same about Elliot who is really promising. So if they can just get Milner on bench they are miles better.

Seems bizarre they didn't pick another one up, especially with Milner, Keita and Ox all out of contract at the end of the season.

It's mismanagement, playing Milner has been a disaster. They need legs and creativity in midfield, Carvalho should be given a chance, he created more in his sub appearances than Milner did in all his starts.

Elliot and Henderson would likely benefit from it too

Yep just playing bit more attacking minded midfield of Milner->Carvalho cannot be worse. If nobody else is bought and injuries continue.

Fabinho will be back next game and Keita should also be available so the midfield all of a sudden looks OK again.

I'd still try Carvalho in there.

However the quality mane gave is never to be underestimated. He created the press, he had the quality to get into space and finish which the team right now is missing.

Because Liverpool's policy is not to sign £70m overaged midfielders and end up with 10000 players who do not have any value vs wages like under Benitez.

The midfield Liverpool have, the likes of Henderson and Milner have served them well and it is about finding the next Henderson and Milner.

      1. The Iceman

Those players should have been targeted and signed by now. Milner is 36 and Henderson’s legs have gone completely.

Do you pay the wage bill at LFC?

There is a thing called sign the right player, not the wrong player cause a problem on the next signing you want to make because then you are stuck with a flop earning massive wages kicking his feet up and not caring if he plays or does not play.

          1. The Iceman

Oxlade-Chamberlain and Keita were signed for a combined £92m, both of whom can now be considered massive flops (injuries have played a part also).

The current recruitment model is not infallible and is partly to blame for the slump we are about to see this season.

You also cannot pin hopes on a 19yo Jude Bellingham next summer who will have more than one offer on the table, particularly as Real Madrid now seem to be circling.

    6. Piggs Boson

They haven't had any midfielders depart this summer. Only injured. Probably don't want to unbalance the wage bill due to a temporary injury problem.

They're probably waiting for Bellingham next summer. The board are patient, and always look long-term.

      1. The Iceman
        • 3 Years

I get your point, but the injury situation is not a temporary problem. It is a recurring problem.

Thiago, Keita and Ox are seemingly only available for a limited no. of games each season. Add to the fact Milner and Henderson are completely washed and it doesn’t look promising.

        1. Piggs Boson
          • 14 Years
          3 years, 10 months ago

They may have been banking on Jones and Elliot stepping up this season.

        2. FOO FIGHTER
          • 6 Years

Keita and Ox need to be moved on. Thiago was one of those players which we signed knowing the risks involved with his injury history.

That is why Klopp is very wary of making more mistakes because if he goes out now just to sing somebody because of injuries and that new singing flops, then he has added to the problem.

Liverpool know which player they want, his name is Bellingham but he is not for sale just yet.
So I think Klopp is going in the right direction of only signing players which are not going to breakdown with injury or missfits who could not give a damn i.e. Keita and wait for the right player to become available beginning next season unless their is an alternative as good as Bellingham.

"Mason Mount (£7.9m) and he has posted very poor underlying numbers"

I wouldn't go as far as to say its very poor underlying numbers, he has better numbers than Luiz Dias, and is on corners as well now.

Definitely hard to know weather to sell or keep with the good fixtures, annoyingly it looks like he may drop again tonight or tomorrow. It probably is a sell but I have a feeling he will return over next few games, he takes plenty of shots and corners, he just needs to click with Sterling a bit better.
