Gameweek 7 fixtures postponed: What happens in FPL?

Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, the Premier League have opted to postpone all of the top-flight fixtures in Gameweek 7.

An announcement on Gameweek 8 will, the Premier League effectively said, be provided “in due course”.

If next week’s fixtures are also called off, domestic football won’t resume until the start of October as an international break takes place later this month.

A statement from the Premier League read:

At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.

Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive, said: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.

“As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”

Further updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided in due course.

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) followed suit with another announcement on Friday lunchtime, which we’ll dissect below.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE GAMEWEEK 7 DEADLINE?

The Gameweek 7 deadline will remain at 11:00 BST on Saturday 10 September.

Given that all fixtures have been postponed for this Gameweek, managers will earn zero points from their players.

CAN I CANCEL THE TRANSFERS I’VE ALREADY MADE?

If you’ve already made a Gameweek 7 transfer(s)/taken a points hit and wished you hadn’t, there appears to be a workaround to undo it.

Activating a Free Hit would seem to be the play, as you’d then get the chip reinstated after the Gameweek 7 deadline has passed (more of which below).

Your squad would then revert to how it looked in Gameweek 6, with just one free transfer to use.

We’re still waiting for FPL to confirm that this is 100% the case, as this ‘hack’ unsurprisingly wasn’t mentioned in their statement.

IF I’VE NOT MADE TRANSFERS ALREADY, WILL THEY ROLL OVER?

This isn’t actually made explicitly clear in the FPL statement either but we’ve had it confirmed that it’s business as usual on the free transfer front.

A maximum of one unused free transfer will be rolled over into Gameweek 8 if you don’t use it in this fixture-less round, as is common practise in any other normal Gameweek of the season.

If you’ve already got two free transfers in your pocket for Gameweek 7, then it goes without saying that you can’t roll both over to Gameweek 8.

WHAT IF I’VE ALREADY PLAYED A CHIP?

The Triple Captain and Bench Boost chip can, of course, be cancelled even if they have already been activated.

Free Hits can’t be cancelled but, as alluded to above, the good news is that you’ll get it back after Gameweek 7.

In FPL’s words…

“Please note that managers can cancel any Triple Captain or Bench Boost chip they have played ahead of the Gameweek 7 deadline

“Managers who have played their Free Hit chips won’t be able to cancel them but they will be automatically reinstated after the Gameweek 7 deadline.

“Any Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips played in Gameweek 7 will also be reinstated after the deadline.”

As for Wildcards, you can’t cancel those either – but FPL say that any Wildcard that is already activated will “roll over into the next Gameweek”.

Wildcarders, therefore, will be able to tinker away to their heart’s content for an extra week and don’t have to get anything finalised before this Saturday’s deadline.

WHO SHOULD I TRANSFER IN?

If you’ve got two free transfers burning a hole in your pocket ahead of Gameweek 7, you may be tempted to use one just to avoid it being lost.

There are different schools of thought of what to do here:

  • Play the price rises: Use your transfer to potentially gain team value or avoid being priced out of future targets: i.e. transfer in Kieran Trippier (£5.2m), who looks set to increase in value on Saturday evening if the price prediction websites are accurate.
  • Transfer in for Gameweek 8 fixtures: Probably the riskiest play is to transfer in players on the assumption that Gameweek 8 is going ahead, given that we have no idea whether this will be the case. Some media outlets have expressed concerns about the entire Gameweek 8 calendar being postponed, while others suggest the games being held in London – Spurs v Leicester, Brentford v Arsenal and Chelsea v Liverpool – are the most at risk due to police resources potentially being needed elsewhere in the lead-up to the Queen’s funeral. That second scenario would leave us with a six-match Gameweek 8, should Brighton v Crystal Palace still be off.

It’s all speculation at this stage, of course, but targeting a player from one of the eight teams listed above carries particular risks.
  • Transfer in for Gameweek 9 fixtures: If Gameweek 8 does fall by the wayside, the Premier League will definitely be back with us in Gameweek 9 after the international break. Targeting players for Gameweek 9 onwards might be the safest ploy, then, particularly for managers who have already used their Wildcard. The below screenshot of our Season Ticker shows the clubs with the most favourable-on-paper fixture runs from Gameweek 9-16, though take note of Leicester and Chelsea, two clubs whose matches are scheduled to take place in London in Gameweek 8, and Palace, whose fixture next weekend was originally postponed because of strike action.

What happens to the postponed fixtures?

The postponed Gameweek 7 fixtures will be allocated to another date later in the season and could form part of a huge Double Gameweek if they are all moved en masse to one free midweek/weekend.

Points scored in these fixtures will apply to the new Gameweek in which the fixtures are played and not to Gameweek 7.

Barring any radical schedule changes, the earliest this will happen will be January 2023.

HEAD-TO-HEAD LEAGUES/DRAFTS

In Head-to-Head league matches in Fantasy, if neither manager made transfers incurring points deductions that Gameweek, then the Gameweek 7 matches will be drawn and managers will earn one point each.

As there are no points deductions for transfer in Draft, all Gameweek 7 matches in Classic and Head-to-Head leagues will be drawn.

Sorry all late to the news but just read the above. I’ve not played my WC but did loads of transfers with the plan to play the WC. If I want to I can cancel the transfers then by playing the free hit but that means I lose money on Jesus and Salah and don’t gain on Toney so I may just play my WC in the fact that I will still be able to make WC transfers next week? Is that correct and the right thing to do?

It's not too clear for me. If you hit freehit after the games were postponed can the freehit be reset when next GW starts. Or does it only apply if you hit FH before games were postponed?

Yes it looks like if you play the FH it will be reinstated after Gameweek 7 deadline

Statement suggests past tense with the use of FH before the announcement. FPL can track folks when the FH was activated.

"Managers who have played their Free Hit chips won't be able to cancel them but they will be automatically reinstated after the Gameweek 7 deadline."

There is a grey area with activating the FH now after the FPL announcement vs FH before. I would consider using the WC in your position. WC is extended until GW8 if you using it this GW

    Bottomed.. Question regarding the WC.

If I activate the WC now then would I have unlimited transfers until the next gameweek, and therefore be able to catch all the price rises/avoid price falls until then?

Yeah I wouldn’t be wildcarding before tomorrow with the information we have at present (it’s a little unclear for me what’s happening after that so maybe even wait until international break)

Class thing is a good point.
I doubt the people behind the decision are struggling financially.
Thousands of people tomorrow potentially are out of a days work in the midst of a cost of living crisis.

It was appropriate to postpone all sports today and for the day of the funeral.
To enforce an extended period of mourning onto working class people is shocking imo

To be honest I thought they queen would make 100. We can all grieve in our own way but just don’t see why all these events should be cancelled. Wouldn’t imagine it was something the Queen would have expected or wanted. In times like these people come together and that can happen through sport.

Yep it’s pathetic by the FPL and the FA. I’m an anti monarchist but surely by playing the games, with a minute silence, black arm bands, the 40,000 crowd belting out “god save the Queen” to millions of tv viewers would’ve been a better way for people to pay their respect, especially just after it had happened. Instead all the joy that millions get around the world from football including your 10 year old will probably be watching Netflix/playing call of duty instead all weekend. And why is football one of the only sports to be effected? Another kick on the balls for the peasants/working class

Give it a rest, national tragedy! She was an amazing states person who had a brilliant life and died of old age at 96, it wasn't a car crash mate. I think some people just like you let your emotions rule you. I think u need to go lie down clearly (and have a little cry whilst you're there...serious melts around...Her Maj was tough as nails..don't think she'd appreciate your campness).

the decision wouldn't have been made for only one reason, I can't speak for kids football - I guess it's easier to blanket postpone everything rather than explain why this is postponed and this isn't (as evidenced here, people get annoyed by this)

it doesn't make you a sheep to suggest there probably shouldn't be huge crowds of passionate men at football grounds tomorrow, especially when there seems to be such a gap in peoples respect for others these days (and their thoughts on monarchy) - can't say I'd have envied being a policeman at Anfield tomorrow for example, especially if the police numbers were smaller than usual

Unlikely. This weekend's games have been postponed as a mark of respect, but others sports are resuming tomorrow included test cricket and the PGA Golf at Wentworth, so CL games will probably be played in midweek, with the PL probably resuming before the funeral as well but the big question mark over that is the date of the funeral.

If you wildcard this week, your wildcard will rollover to next week (unlimited changes up to GW8 deadline). After the end of GW8 (assuming that it goes ahead), you get 1 free transfer before GW9.

In my opinion, cancellation of games reduces the appeal of wildcard in GW8 and GW9. In general, there are three ways to benefit from WC chip:
    (1) In the weeks prior to WC, buying players with short term fixtures / form with an intention to sell them during the WC (popularly called dead-end).
    (2) During the WC, rebuild the team: Sell players whose fixtures turn difficult and buy players whose fixtures turn better.
    (3) Improve team value by buying / selling players with price rise / fall.

I think the first two advantages are reduced due to the cancellation of GW7: (1) No games to take advantage of dead-end players. (2) Those without WC can now use their free transfers to rebuild their team, thus reducing any significant advantage of WC. If GW8 is also cancelled, the advantages will reduce farther.

However, the third advantage gets boosted due to increased timespan of the wildcard.

On the other hand, those who played their Wildcard early in GW2/3/4 need to worry less about (1) and (2). They also have much higher team value, courtesy of early purchase of bandwagon players and riding their price increase over a longer timespan. Therefore, I think early WCs are the real winners in this scenario.

    Discuss.

    1. banskt
      • 10 Years

Hence, it might be better not to activate the WC this week or GW8/9 and just use it as a free hit in GW9 in order to get some of those lost advantages.

So when play the wildcard if you still have it, post GW9? We get another one in GW16 so you are getting less and less benefit from it.

        • 10 Years
        1 year, 7 months ago

See my comment above. In order to get some advantage, it might be better (again in my opinion) is to play it as a free hit in GW15/16, after which you will get another wildcard regardless.

If you have a team you are happy with till then sure, but I'd have thought the whole point of WC is to make multiple player/structure changes when transfers and or the odd hit won't suffice.

            • 10 Years

I think it really depends on the number of players you want to change. In general, 4-5 changes is enough for a team overhaul, which is what you get for the cancelled games.

However, it depends on your team, of course.

How? If I play my WC now, the WC will rollover to GW8. If GW8 goes ahead, I will get only 1 free transfer before GW9. If I don't, I will get 1 free transfer before GW7 + 1 free transfer before GW8 + 1 free transfer before GW9.

I wanted to say after GW9 you have 2 FT. I think premier league will return in GW9 and if you use WC now you will have 2 free transfer before GW10.

We need more information to say anything concrete about that. If GW8 is cancelled, then there are two possibilities:
            (1) If the WC rolls over again to GW9 (as it did this week), then you will get 1 FT before GW10.
            (2) If the WC does not roll over to GW9, then you will get 2 FTs before GW10.

Good point. I read the statement from FPL and it doesn't clarify this issue. I thought that you get 1 FT every week no matter what. Maybe you are right and it is really 1.option and wildcard is not worth it. If option 2 is correct then WC+2FT is very tempting.

          That's what I want - but No.

This week will roll over tomorrow.

You will get a FT at some point tomorrow.

I'm debating if too but the danger is if there is no GW8 and it doesn't roll over to GW9.

I think there's been enough of an outcry about this week's cancellation to think that GW8 is likely to go ahead. Just my opinion but hey.

Opinions can change within 28 years. Also only the nicest things are said about someone who has just died, and nothing negative. I think that the United Kingdom can be really proud of their Queen and she did a very good job. But I am just a simple German.

Is not Liz Truss history soon anyway? In Germany you can read everywhere that she is not exactly popular with the population and that Labor clearly leads the polls. Labor is therefore likely to push for early elections, arguing that Lizz Truss was only elected by Tory members.

So rugby, golf and cricket have disrespected the Queen? No one really believes that surely.

The other sports going on makes the PL look like a bunch of muppets, frankly. A whole month with no games in a season where the World Cup is being played in Nov/Dec is going to really screw up their schedule. And they only have themselves to blame.

Exactly my issue with this. Respect and mourning are not tangible.
Last night and today have been very appropriate times of mourning .
Isolating your fans and costing thousands their livelihood whilst wrecking you own schedule isn't an act of "respect", it's self destructive.
Also the respect that would have been shown at the games would have been brilliant and much more poignant than telling people to mourn at home.
I'd imagine they're deeply regretting the decision now or if not tomorrow afternoon as they're watching McIlroy smash it around Wentworth on sky sports

It's very old school. People watch funerals online now and pay respects on Facebook. Which is kinda wrong too but times have changed. Jesus I we had a queen here her wake session would be biblical.

What if I made a -4 trade this week already.

Will I lose my Head-to-Head 0 to -4 this week?

Or, do you basically not lose anything this week with infinite trades? If H2H is your focus - you have a free week to wildcard.

Surely, you will lose -4 for every extra trade from your total year haul, yes?

If GW8 is also postponed they will just extend Wildcard to GW9 and you will also get 2 FT until GW10? Or you don't get new FT every GW if fixtures are cancelled?

Good question - I would write them an email with your question. They are very responsive and customer focused people at FPL.

The only problem they never fully solved for me was a H2H issue where I lost to my worst-enemy in the world by 1 point.

In that gameweek, Dunk was given a Red-Card by accident (-2), the Ref thought that Dunk already had a Yellow. Then BHA gave up a second goal (-1). So Dunk costed me -3 points that Monday Night by Accident. I lose by 1 point.

FPL kids said they could not fix my score, they can go by on-field decisions. But I was able to show my Enemy the email that he only won by Algorithm quirk.
