Is Bruno Fernandes back to his best in FPL?

Bruno Fernandes (£9.9m) is top of many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers’ shopping lists ahead of Gameweek 22.

The Manchester United midfielder has been the subject of more transfers in than any other player ahead of next Friday’s deadline.

It’s not just his recent form – 36 points in his last five appearances – that is appealing to FPL bosses but also the strong possibility of Gameweek 22 being a ‘double’ for the Red Devils.

With his stock on the rise, we take a look at his current output to see how it compares to his historic record, including his outstanding 2020/21 campaign.

Note: For the rolling six-game images below, click to expand into a new window.

SHOTS

For much of Erik ten Hag’s tenure, Fernandes has been below average for goal attempts compared to his historic average at Manchester United.

But the slump started long before the Dutchman’s arrival and, adding fuel to this particular argument, seemed to coincide with the capture of (the some would say ball-greedy) Cristiano Ronaldo in late August 2021.

Fernandes’ rolling six-game goal attempts tally tumbled from its apex to its absolute nadir within two months of Ronaldo’s arrival and never really recovered in 2021/22, save for a stat-boosting Gameweek 27 appearance against Championship-bound Watford when the midfielder racked up an anomalous eight shots.

2022/232.06 (33rd)
Last six matches2.18 (29th)

SHOTS IN THE BOX

Fernandes’ rate of shots in the box hit an all-time low in Gameweek 14 of the current campaign, with just two such efforts arriving in six matches. That six-game period did feature fixtures against Manchester City, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, in mitigation.

We’ve seen a bit of a recovery since the World Cup (and Ronaldo’s departure) but only to somewhere around his historic Premier League mean.

Last six matches1.01 (=51st)

BIG CHANCES

For the uninitiated, a ‘big chance’ is – according to data compilers Opta – “a situation where a player should reasonably be expected to score”.

One such situation is a penalty, and there’s a definite split in the above graphic when Fernandes ceased to have the monopoly on spot-kicks at United:

SeasonPenalties Taken
2019/20 (half-season)4
2020/2110
2021/222
2022/23 (half-season)0

The Portugal international has missed his last two Premier League penalties, both taken in 2021/22, and hasn’t been trusted from 12 yards for United in any competition since.

Over a third (34.8%) of Fernandes’ big chances in his United career have come from the penalty spot.

Taking a closer look at this season, Fernandes has had just one big chance (his contentious ‘offside’ goal in the Manchester derby) in his last 13 appearances.

These gilt-edged opportunities do matter, despite his ability to shoot from distance: 60% of his 40 Premier League goals have been classed as ‘big chances’, while 82.5% of his goals have been from shots in the box.

If you chase the price rises early sometimes the player gets injured.

Stones did walk off under his own steam, but I guess his playing time will be shortened for the next few gw's

If you have good squad value at this time of the season, price rises are not as important. WC2 is time to use some of the accrued value and not worry so much re price..

Pep started his best current XI bar goalkeeper in the 4th round of the FA Cup. He was desperate to win. Arsenal B went toe to toe with them, so I'm not sure if that's good for his ego.

      A definite maybe

Dias is the problem. I don't know if Dias has been permanently dropped or is being eased back in. If Dias has been frozen out, then I think Akanji is nailed

Haven't seen a Pep quote on Dias though

      Laporte Dias can replace him.
I consider Stones a better def overall but injury issues put Akanji over him in nailedness terms.
Akanji will be a rotation risk only when UCL starts imo though Pep seems to prefer him more for the PL and not in UCL so he should be ok

Why did no one say this when Liverpool were winning the PL and CL in the last few years? We’ve always been a team plagued with injuries to our key players during Wenger’s era, it’s about time we have some luck with it.

Chelsea and Liverpool have injuries but apart from that, everyone else has their full strength.

Think they are quite well covered up front. Jesus is a very significant injury and nketiah has excelled.

Central midfield important, but mainly need to keep Holding out the picture at the back.

Look the most fluid team atm and playing the best football. But it feels like we're further into the season that we actually are - barely halfway. I just can't help but see a Keegan-style meltdown from Arteta. City often win titles by default.

He's encouraging them to be fearless, to push to win games, not be happy with a draw. United didn't want to lose last Sunday, played far too deep in second half. Arsenal wanted to win and went out and did it.

    My takeaways

    1. Don't expect much from Haaland at Arsenal. TC GW23 highly dependent on the home match vs Villa.
    2. Keeping Martinelli as I think he's first choice LW ahead of Trossard for now.

Just wondering whether there's cause for excitement because we're playing some really good stuff this year. May even have a squeak at a playoff place if a key player didn't get injured every 5 minutes.

But yeah from the few times I've watched him he's looked really good. Quick feet, good finisher. Is a bit of a fiesty player, in a good way. Passionate, seemed to give his all when he got the chance at Leeds.

not a bad idea if you can't get to Bruno & Rashford both easily.

I can get him with that move
        GW22 KDB > Bruno &
        GW 23 Bruno > KDB
        For -8

I’d prefer this bud, but why would that cost you a -8? Just curious 🙂

    Advise needed plz!
Should I straight swap Salah to Bruno already have Shaw and Rash
    Or
    Take a -4 hit keep Salah vs Wolves and do Mitro-Ferg + Cancelo-Stones Almiron-Bruno

    Have kane and Haaland too.

A -4 to do Mitro + Ferguson + Cancelo > Stones + Almiron + Bruno? Definitely not, no idea why you’d do that.

Just the straight Salah out swap for me there buddy

I was debating another way simply to keep Salah vs Wolves as I was hoping for a long awaited Haul.

Stones is possibly injured with his hamstring
Almiron is who everyone is jumping off of, not on
So neither of those make sense to bring in.

Can understand the hope for a Salah haul, I awaited it as well until I sold about 3 weeks ago. The haul isn’t coming, so jsit get rid of him asap in my opinion mate

Salah's form is poor as is Liverpool's. You're keeping him for Wolves not because he's playing well but hoping Wolves will be poor. Wolves under Lopetegui are improved defensively. Conceded 3 v City but conceded just 3 in other 4 PL games under Lopetegui.

I just find it hard as a Liverpool supporter! Being loyal is not going to get me points so all advice taken on board.

    My team would be

    Kepa/Ward
    Trippier Botman Stones Shaw White
    Salah Rashford Bruno Odergaard Andreas
    Haaland Kane Fergie

    Andreas-March next.
