After three-and-a-half seasons, five goals, 17 assists, 44 clean sheets and 457 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, we’ve said auf wiedersehen to Joao Cancelo (£7.1m).

A nailed starter until Gameweek 16 and then deemed dispensable by Gameweek 22, his fall from Manchester City regular and FPL royalty status was a sharp one.

He’s been packed off on loan to Bayern Munich for the rest of 2022/23 but he looks unlikely to be wearing the sky blue of City again, with an ‘option to buy’ clause also tagged onto this deal.

We’ve already gone through some Cancelo replacements for your FPL team but now we turn our attention to how Pep Guardiola will shape up his City defence without the Portugal international.

And the key question: is anyone ‘nailed’ as a result of Cancelo’s exit?

THE OPTIONS IN EACH POSITION

Right-backRight centre-backLeft centre-backLeft-back
Lewis, Walker, Stones, AkanjiStones, Akanji, Dias, WalkerAkanji, Laporte, AkeAke, Laporte, Gomez

Above is a very rough indication of who can play where in the City backline. Cancelo’s departure and Rico Lewis’s (£3.9m) rise to prominence probably make some tactical choices slightly less likely: ie John Stones (£5.4m) or Manuel Akanji (£5.0m) starting at right-back, given that there are no real trusted candidates to ‘invert’ on the left.

Just to prove that anything is possible in Pep’s world, however, Stones did indeed end up at right-back (inverting into midfield) in the second half of Gameweek 21, with four recognised centre-halves stationed in the defence.

Of course, the positions listed are nominal ones. A full-back is often not really a full-back in Guardiola’s teams, while even the centre-halves can shift about – as we’re about to discuss in the section below.

HOW PEP HAS USED HIS FULL-BACKS (AND CENTRE-HALVES) IN 2022/23

THE 3-2-5

Since the World Cup, we’ve chiefly seen a 3-2-5 on-the-ball set-up from Man City.

The nominal right-back, in this case Lewis, pushes forward into central midfield alongside Rodri (£5.6m)

The left-back, Nathan Ake (£5.0m) here, shunts over to form a three-man backline with the two centre-halves.

The mirror image of this set-up (with the right-back staying at home and the left-back inverting) is, of course, possible, but Guardiola now has fewer options suited to this approach on the left since Cancelo departed.

With no width provided by the full-backs, it’s generally up to the wingers to stay high and wide.

THE 2-3-5

City began the season in the 2-3-5 system you see above, with the two full-backs – Cancelo and Kyle Walker (£4.8m) here – both ‘inverting’ and moving up alongside Rodri.

It was used to good effect against West Ham in Gameweek 1, nullifying breaks from the narrow Hammers attack.

2-4-4
How will Man City's defence line up without Joao Cancelo? 3

Not that Pep is averse to using more orthodox, attacking full-backs on occasion, or as close to orthodox as you get with the slippery City boss.

Walker and Cancelo were both pushed up the flank in the first Manchester derby of the season, for example, while an early tactical switch in the FA Cup game against Chelsea last month saw Walker and Sergio Gomez (£4.5m) adopt similar roles.

2-2-6

This is a gung-ho approach on paper but it’s generally only used when City encounter a bus-parking exercise from a five-man defence, with one of the full-backs pushed up to effectively form a six-man attack.

The Bournemouth home game back in August featured this set-up, as an example.

HOW CITY HAVE PLAYED WITHOUT CANCELO SO FAR

What's my best move here? 2FT, 1.4 ITB

    Kepa
    Shaw, White, Trippier
    Rashford, KDB, Martinelli, Mitoma
    Haaland, Darwin, Martial
    Bench: Ward; Kulu, Cancelo, Bueno

    a) Kulu, Martial -> Bruno, Gnoto

    c) Kulu -> Saka/ Ode

Thoughts on this bunch with 2 FT?

    Kepa - Ward
    Trippier - Shaw - White - Schar - Bueno
    KDB - Almiron - Rashford - Martinelli - Rodrigo
    Haaland - Kane - Mitrovic

    0.7 itb

Looking at Odegaard, Nketiah and/or Bruno potentially coming in. I would probably like to keep KDB with the double next week.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

Keeping KDB but getting Bruno probably means selling Kane. So if you aren't happy with that, reassess KDB or forgo Bruno (personally I am doing KDB to Bruno but have Mahrez). Benefit of a downgrade however is you can probably make Almiron into Saka or Odegaard.

Could do Bruno to Mahrez in 23 - you will need to shed some Man U and Newcastle to field 11 in 25 so not a bad move and gives some funds to make other changes

True, I suppose I'm afraid of Bruno of trolling this week, KDB hitting a run of form, Mahrez getting rotated. Lots of things to consider.

Prioritize. It is impossible to do everything with limited number of transfers. Do whatever you think will give maximum points over the next few weeks.

For example, my priority is to get my favorite 3 Arsenal attackers. So, I am selling Kane, and still not buying Bruno. If I don't buy Saka this week, then I have to take a hit next week.

I know you're keen on shifting away from Arsenal at the back, so understand the background to the hit - wouldn't do it myself but your options look good. You will go into 23 with 5 players blanking in 25, 1 injured and 3 FT so a bit tight, but I am going with a similar situation so upsides could be worth it.

      1. banskt
        • 12 Years

I have to sell Martinez and Botman before GW25. There is a slight chance that Patterson may play in GW25. Otherwise, I will probably go with 10 players.

Another option I am considering is to get in a Fulham defender, and ignore the third United slot.

I'm losing Botman - probably for Moreno as has reasonable 25 and 28 fixtures. Shaw will go, possibly for a Chelsea defender if they've got it together by then. I don't think 10 is the end of the world for 25.

Thanks. My dream Arsenal trio are Saka, Ode and Nketiah but I have Martinelli at present. Do you think I should use a transfer in doing Marti > Saka/Ode or just avoid getting Nketiah?

        Kepa
        Gabriel - Trippier - Shaw
        Salah - KDB - Martinelli - Rash - Almiron
        Haaland - Toney

There's certainly a case for Øde/Saka being the more sensible option than Nketiah, given that Jesus might return in between the blanks when FTs are scarce. But my own approach (on WC) is just to commit to triple Arsenal attack throughout this dreamy run up to GW30 or so, and just do Nketiah - Jesus when required. In your case I would probably just kick things off with a simple Salah - Saka/Øde, and then maybe lose one of Martinelli/Gabriel next week to continue the transition

Thanks again. It is risky going without Bruno but as others have said he often assists the assisters. I could so Salah & Marti > Bruno and Saka for free this week and maybe take a hit or two on GW25

He should score well. But if you end up taking hits to attack the next DGW or cope with upcoming BGW then no, it is probably not worth it. 3x Arsenal should be a priority by GW23 due to double and no blanks

Thanks. My dream Arsenal trio are Saka, Ode and Nketiah but I have Martinelli at present. Do you think I should use a transfer in doing Marti > Saka/Ode or just avoid getting Nketiah? I've got 5 transfers to use before BGW25 but will likely take a -4 (so 6 transfers)

        Kepa
        Gabriel - Trippier - Shaw
        Salah - KDB - Martinelli - Rash - Almiron
        Haaland - Toney

No. I would hold Martinelli. Yes he's blanked but no reason he won't explode or Saka get benched for Trossard or Odegaard benched for Jorginho (first one half serious, last one a joke). I would say Salah, Almiron, Greenwood, Patterson all need sorting. Plus you have Rash, Shaw, Trippier and Schar blanking. Martinelli is a luxury transfer I don't think you can afford.

Salah to Saka and Greenwood to Nketiah (bench Almiron). Or Salah to Bruno and then on to Saka in 23.

Thanks. I have Gabriel too and so if I keep Marti I can only get one of Saka or Nketiah. Think I'll do Salah > Bruno and roll 1 FT and re-assess next week after we have more info

It is FPL. Bruno could score 30+ points this week. Or, Nketiah/Saka/Ode could score 120+ points over next 5-8 weeks.

As of your decision, it depends on your team and how you want to play this game. Decide one priority and stick to it.

KDB + Almiron > Bruno + Odegaard, reverse the Bruno move next week (or get Mahrez)? Schar/Shaw + Toney out by GW25 should mean I can field 11 in the blank.

There are a few reasons why so many women don't come forward about abuse. The anguish of having to relive events and almost justify their reports to people is one, but the results very rarely going their way (and the ensuing hate and verbal abuse that they receive because of it especially in big cases like this) is surely one of the biggest

Indeed, there could be many reasons as to why she pulled away. I'd rather not even think about it, already felt for her after everything came out initially and can just imagine the torrent of hatred she's had sent her way from nutjobs like crazed ManUtd/Greenwood fans, doxxing, etc. I've seen what abuse can do to people first hand (short and long term) so just keeping stuff like this out of my head feels like the only way sometimes even if it's selfish

My understanding is that the CPS simply considers whether there is a likelihood of a conviction - there to prevent weak cases wasting time. BBC suggest a "key witness" had pulled out so making assumptions about who that is, there is possibly no chance of a conviction without her testimony.

ETH has dropped players over being late for training. I can't imagine he would tolerate someone which a much much more significant misdemeanour - convicted or otherwise most of us have heard the recording. I also see it as being a potentially divisive move to bring him back, and disrupting a team who are miles beyond the disharmonious mess we had last years is the last thing he wants.

And that's of course before you get onto the whole moral aspects.

Don't get me wrong, as a fan its gutting to lose a player who arguably had the raw ability to eclipse records set by Best, Giggs and Rooney. Clearly the anguish of any fan is nothing compared to those directly affected by his "actions". I think his absence was a major contributor to last seasons disaster too. But it absolutely cannot happen that he sets foot on the pitch in a United shirt again - it sets the wrong message and he must be made an example of.

Bound to happen. Charges dropped against Man Utd player when the main witness withdraws her evidence. Seen it before at United with Nicky Butt a week before trial. And we all know why

Not as easy to get away with it now in the MeToo era.

I feel weird about the whole situation. Kinda feel like he eventually comes back maybe next season. But it'd be awkward af.

But then players like Partey and Ronaldo keep continuing to play without it feeling that way so who knows how these footballers compartmentalise their feelings in professional settings.

Seems like there's something in the water at United.

            Greenwood
            Rooney
            Ronaldo
            Giggs

Neither have any of the names u mentioned. Doesn't mean they haven't done what they were accused of. The only reason u protect Partey is because you're an Arsenal fan. Be better mate. More to life than football.

I'm just pointing out his hypocrisy. He's quick to judge when it's United players but won't do the same for Arsenal ones.

That is generally where my sympathy would go Mentaculus when we're talking about this subject and this guy outright rejects the idea certain people could do it.

But Partey was never charged, Greenwood was.

You're dragging Partey's name through the mud and slinging misogyny accusations around.

Can't see where I implied you're misogynistic. I'm more implying you're a diehard fanboy that can't accept his clubs players could have done something evil.

Partey has never been charged and it seems you're the fanboy who's defending Greenwood.

Anyway may be best to stop talking about it, the evidence is clear with Greenwood.

He shouldn't get another chance and will get boo'd for the rest of his career.

No buddy I hope Greenwood never comes back. My point is you're focusing on him not being charged and u mentioned names like Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney who also have never been charged and yet u were okay bringing them up. What else does that tell me other than you're a fanboy who would look the other way? Anyways I'm over this. I can't change how u feel. Have a nice life. My apologies for bringing up your friends. This is just a very sensitive topic for me because of how often these evil people go free. It just frustrates me so much how shite our system is.

Giggs is involved in a 2 year court case and is defo an absolute wrong un, Greenwood was charged and is an absolute wrong un. Ronaldo paid off a women big time for and is a wrong un.

Rooney has a very checkered past. Not sure on the charges.

Greenwood has paid this girl off or she's too scared to prosecute. Either way it's very disappointing.

Who would you rather have this gameweek?

    A. Toney and Saka/Ode
    B. Gnonto and KDB

Will have Bruno either way and would move him for Saka/Ode in 23 if I go B giving me 3x Ars and 3x City (Ederson)

    Good luck to everyone!
