Here, former FPL champion Simon March looks at all things ‘template’ as we hit Double Gameweek season.

FPL team reveal: Why I've picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

Engage in any substantive discussion of FPL and you’ll inevitably encounter the term ‘template’ at some point during in the conversation. ‘Template’ is the vaguely pejorative term used to describe a situation where everybody’s FPL team appears, at least, to be exactly the same.

In reality, the idea of a template is a little misleading as it is usually pretty rare for a large number of teams to be identical, but it does refer to the very real situation which occurs when all the seemingly key players are all highly owned. As a result of this situation, it becomes difficult to make significant gains in rank without deviating from the perceived ‘template’.

But how are templates formed? Can they be avoided? Or could they be used to gain an advantage over our rivals? These questions will be the focus of this article.

How are Templates formed?

Leicester v Man City team news: Haaland out, Foden a sub

If we take a template to be the collective high ownership of a select number of players within FPL, there are a few ways in which they can be formed.

The most obvious way a template can be formed is when the players who comprise it justify their inclusion by virtue of their performances. Liverpool’s historical points machine Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) is an example of a seemingly mandatorily-owned player in recent seasons, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (£12.2m) is an example of one this season. When a few of these ‘must-own’ players emerge at once, the template is never far away.

There are also players who enter the template by virtue of them dramatically outperforming their FPL price. £4.0m Sheffield United ‘defender’ John Lundstram is a good example with his 144 points delivered in the 2019/20 season. Players who offer too good value to be ignored are basic staples of the template.

Now, realistically, the template effect should only be possible in situations where there is a dearth of viable, high-scoring alternatives to complicate matters. However, in such situations, attention will move toward contextual factors, such as a fixture run, and the template will often prevail regardless.

Particularly influential among the template-conducive contextual factors are Double Gameweeks, which might funnel FPL managers towards certain players based on the prospect that they may play twice. Situations like this sometimes create perverse circumstances where great-value, high-scoring assets are overlooked by the template, largely because they don’t have an extra fixture. Brighton’s midfielder Kaoru Mitoma (£5.2m), who has scored four goals in his past five appearances, is an example of a player who, by all rational measures, should be a template player, yet at the time of writing is barely owned by one in ten FPL managers.

The Social Factor

Have you ever wondered why lines of ants (bear with me) always seem to follow the same path? As I understand it, when ants are searching for food sources, they send their scouts out in multiple directions and they all leave a pheromone trail, which other ants can follow, as they go. Because pheromones dissipate over time, the ant who finds the shortest route to food will leave the strongest pheromone trail and, thus, his path becomes the most easily followed by other ants. Before long, more ants are following this trail and the pheromone markers get stronger and stronger until, inevitably, all the ants are following the same trail.

FPL, as we know, is a social game with a large community around it. Though some might argue otherwise, it is likely that time spent among the FPL community will give you an advantage over those who have actual lives. Immersion within the FPL community will, however, also make you more prone to ‘groupthink’, which is a phenomenon that occurs when individuals, often irrationally, reach a consensus opinion through a common desire to ‘fit in’.

Within a community, FPL managers might experience ‘fear of missing out’ when they see multiple other Fantasy managers choosing a particular player (particularly if that FPL manager has a large platform or is considered highly influential) and, through a desire to avoid the anticipated loss that might occur should they not also choose that player, or the stress of having to explain why they didn’t choose him, they may well go ahead and choose that player, whether they truly believe it is the right decision for them or not.

While this ‘bandwagon’ effect can be based in logic (like ants taking the shortest route), it can also be rooted in complete narrative nonsense (like an ant who forgot to shower that day and just ended up being a bit more pheromone-y than usual) but we will often follow the lead because, in FPL as with so many things in life, the potential punishment for deviating from the popular path appears far greater than the potential reward that might come from such acts of individualism.

Consequently, while we often complain about the template as being something that is ‘done to us’, it is, very often, something we in fact do to ourselves.

How we can use the Template to our advantage

FPL Gameweek 7 hot topics: Salah's form, Leicester's defence, three up top

Following the template is not necessarily a bad thing. For example, very few managers will have done well this season without owning Erling Haaland. There is a level of template adherence that is necessary for FPL survival each season. However, it is also, by definition, impossible to do really well in FPL by simply sticking to the template and, if there is truly one skill that defines an elite Fantasy manager, it’s knowing when and where to deviate from the masses.

Now, far be it from me to claim to have this skill myself, let alone be able to teach it, but it stands to reason that it begins by setting yourself a high bar for what information you allow to influence you. Just because a player has high ownership or you see them mentioned a lot within FPL circles, doesn’t mean that they’re the right option for you. In fact, every time a bandwagon or a template emerges, an opportunity emerges right alongside it for those willing to critically examine popular decisions and deviate from them when they believe it makes sense to do so.

This is particularly the case around Double Gameweeks, the importance of which often snowballs in the build-up to them to the point where having the maximum number of Double Gameweek players becomes a seemingly overarching imperative, irrespective of how good the fixtures or player options actually are.

Every Double Gameweek, without exception, a lesser-owned ‘single’ Gameweek player will outperform many of the twice-playing options, yet the question of who the former assets might be is almost entirely absent from the conversation with the vast majority of discussion dedicated toward who the best Double Gameweek assets are. Taking a well-reasoned but contrarian approach in these situations can be the kind of template-busting move that pays off enormously at this and later stages of the season.

In summary; set a high bar for how you are influenced, take a deep breath when it comes to Double Gameweeks and look for smart opportunities to be different and the emergence of a strong template can become the exact opportunity you need to break free from the pack.

Which triple Arsenal for their amazing run of games?

    A. Nketiah, Saka, Odegaard
    B. Nketiah, Saka, Gabriel
    C. Nketiah, Odegaard, Gabriel

      A imo

but I feel already brainwashed by Twitter gurus that my Nketiah, Saka, White triple isn’t good enough.

    Bottomed on last thread:

Initial plan was to roll transfer this week and stick with Bruno for the next 2 games. Now with the dgw25 news, I think I need to be sure to have the right Arsenal players in place for the upcoming fixtures.

    Kepa Ward
    Trippier White Shaw Lewis Bueno
    KDB Bruno Rashford Odegaard Martinelli
    Haaland Kane Gnonto

    1FT, 0.0itb

    Should I:

A - Stick to the original plan and hold
    B - Bruno & Martinelli ➡ Saka & Mitoma (-4)

Will most likely do Shaw ➡ Tark for gw 24 either way.

If I go with A, I will most likely end up taking a -4 in gw25 to get Saka in for Martinelli anyway so thinking it may be better to just get it out of the way now. Option B gives me more flexibility and frees up some money in my team.

    Thoughts?

I’ve got a similar problem, really don’t like Martinelli in my team but the hits are a bummer!

With A, you will have an option to do Kevin to Saka instead if Kevin fails again. I would stick

I'd still need to make another transfer elsewhere to take out Martinelli as I'm maxed out on Arsenal players. Will also need to lose Bruno by gw25 so I'd envisage taking a hit in gw25 if I take out Bruno, KDB and Martinelli.

My thinking is that if I've got to take a hit then anyway, I may as well do it now and have Saka over Martinelli for dgw23 before getting stung with price rises/drops and Martinelli's poor recent form. Also keeps the door open to do KDB ➡ Salah for dgw25 as an option.

I ditched both Martinelli and White for Saka and Nketiah (-8) yesterday. Not happy about the -8, but better bite the bullet early than later imo. More time for imminent hits to pay themselves back, I hope.

I’ve got stuck with martenelli white and oodergard.

Think it may be best to try and get the right Arsenal triple up early as they have two double gameweeks in gw23 and gw25 and play when other teams blank in gw25 and gw28.

If you feel Nketiah will outscore Martinelli by more than 4 points up until gw29 then the -4 will be worth it.

Thinking about Martinelli -> Saka but means I can't get Salah for DGW25 if I wanted to. Or I mean I could get him but don't want to sell Haaland or Kane...

I was watching the Martin Lewis Money Show last night and he was trying to give us some advice about what the best interests rates are for savers at the moment. There was 3% here or 4% there if you tied your money up for 10 years but no one informed him that the Bank of William Hill are offering a 50% yield for a two hours deposit tonight; it's called the "Manchester United Are Going To Destroy Leeds Again" account. As with all investments it carries an element of risk but I can safely say I'll be adding this to my portfolio later today with a view to paying for my night out this weekend.

Have Bueno as well but not yet resigned to the opinion that he's a bench warmer. He had started the previous 10 PL games for Wolves prior to being benched in their last game.

Better to assess how Wolves line up in the next 2 before dismissing Bueno as a dgw25 option.

I'm holding, yes he's had a couple of early subs but one was when he was on a yc up against an in-form Rashford, and over the whole season it's only really happened a couple of other times (mostly in games they conceded). Not something I'm too worried about, if he gets dropped then I'll deal with it then but feels silly to take -4/8 to move him to another attacker for games that could be very tight. Very happy with Saka and Nketiah and him currently

More upside with Nketiah though? Im currently on White and Odegaard.

I just wish there were better defensive options to feel more confident where to move White.

I'm not really in a "one is definitively better than the other" line of thinking tbh, I watched Nketiah in the last few games and wanted him after Spurs, he blanked but should have had 2 goals if not for slightly poor touches, think he's a great option. Odegaard has been superb though and is a great option too, less of a long-term worry too for minutes with Jesus back in the frame in a few weeks.

Agree on defensive options, I've had Patterson, Cash and Dalot stinking up my team for weeks but haven't had anyone there that I really want so I've just left them. Maybe one of the first two might play in GW25 if their competition gets injured but that's my only hope really, not confident on City defence, no point in going double Newcastle now, etc.

Holding onto White for now. If the time comes when he starts missing games, I'd most likely shift to Gabriel to keep balance in the team as generally not a fan of having 3 attackers from one team

Which one to bench out of, to make way for Ake DGW:

    1. Trippier (bou)
    2. Shaw (lee)
    3. Mitrovic (NFO)

Will Niketah get both games in 25. If so, would u do this move, with doubts regarding White.

    White + Havertz. ➡ Lewis + Niketah

Would give me this Triple arsenal attack (Saka, Odegaard, Niketah).

They might as well run Eddie into the ground now. Plenty of time for him to rest when Jesus rises.

      Smooth move.

Depends on other defs. He is not bad option for 3.9 and I transferred him in, because couldn't afford anyone else. His attacking threat stats are surprisingly high, I wouldn't be surprised to see him outscore other MCI defs.

    The Bruno to KDB Conundrum.

The main question for me is how will City react to their Spurs loss & the negative news around the club? Will it create a siege mentality which sees them smash Villa & have a proper go at Arsenal or will they sink in their despair? So tough to call.

Hard to say, but their first game is at home in fairness so I'd say siege for least the first match.

Pep is professional enough to go through this unscathed imo. Until the allegations are confirmed true and ban imminent, they will go on as usual. The only issue he has is the little disharmony created by Cancelo's move but I think Pep will deal with that for now.

    Ederson
    Shaw, Gabriel, Trippier
    Bruno, Rashford, Odegaard, Martinelli
    Haaland (c), Kane, Mitro

    Ward, Estupiñán, Andreas, Bueno

    2.6m ITB, 1 FT

    A) Bruno to KDB (my original plan)
    B) Bruno to Mahrez
    C) Martinelli to Saka (3 Arsenal & 2 City)
    D) Save (I'm going to need at least 2 more defenders for DGW25)
    E) Something else

Looking forward to GW25, I've currently got 6 blankers and only 2 Arsenal as doublers (also Bueno but not sure he starts).
Getting Salah/Darwin probably means losing Kane which I'm very reluctant to do.
The two Arsenal are White and Martinelli, possibly adding Saka/Odegaard this week, so not the best three.

    Is that FH territory?
    Something like:
    Pickford
    TAA Gabriel Tarkowski
    Salah Saka Odegaard Neves
    Haaland Darwin DCL

I feel like FH might be more valuable than a WC. Considered moving to dead end your team in 25? Then you can WC back after that with your FH in pocket.

Hmm ok, I'd not thought about that.
I think the issue I'm having is I'm reluctant to lose any of my Utd/Newcastle players right now!

        Any suggestions?
        Ederson
        Trippier White Botman
        Bruno Rashford Martinelli Mitoma
        Kane Haaland Mitro
        (Ward Andreas Shaw Bueno)

Take a look at BGW28 assuming the PL teams progress to the FA Cup QFs it may be better to FH28 then.

The chances of teams blanking that GW can be viewed in the link below.

There is no future, there is no past. I live this moment as my last. There's only us. There's only this. Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road. No other way. No day but today. Were a few around last week (myself included). Personally I thought if I delayed WC til this week the only change I'd have made was maybe Bruno - Mahrez, but I'm actually rolling FT anyway. Got a good idea of the remaining schedule last week & even if DGW25 wasn't anticipated exactly as it is, my squad is still well setup for the blanks (and with my favoured Arsenal trio)

How does Martinelli & Mitro to Saka and Nketiah (-4) look?

      Would give me

      Kepa
      Trippier, Botman, Gabriel
      Mahrez, Saka, Bruno, Rashford
      Kane, Haaland, Nketiah

      Ward, Mitoma, Shaw, Bueno

Could obviously avoid the Martinelli move, but feeling ok bout the hit. That Mitoma benching mught hurt more...

    Kepa
    Trippier - Akanji - White
    Bruno - Rash - Martinelli - Almiron
    Kane - Haaland - Toney

    Ward - Andreas - Botman - Shaw

You've got 7 blanks and 3/4 FT so the sideways Martinelli move probably means 10 players in 25 or a hit. I can see benefit in upgrading Martinelli, and this is possibly the week to do it, but don't kid yourself it's for free

      1. Kodap
        • 8 Years

Hmm, yeah it's a tough one. It's a little sideways when I could possibly bring in Mahrez/Nketiah instead.
