Here, former FPL champion Simon March looks at all things ‘template’ as we hit Double Gameweek season.

FPL team reveal: Why I've picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

Engage in any substantive discussion of FPL and you’ll inevitably encounter the term ‘template’ at some point during in the conversation. ‘Template’ is the vaguely pejorative term used to describe a situation where everybody’s FPL team appears, at least, to be exactly the same.

In reality, the idea of a template is a little misleading as it is usually pretty rare for a large number of teams to be identical, but it does refer to the very real situation which occurs when all the seemingly key players are all highly owned. As a result of this situation, it becomes difficult to make significant gains in rank without deviating from the perceived ‘template’.

But how are templates formed? Can they be avoided? Or could they be used to gain an advantage over our rivals? These questions will be the focus of this article.

How are Templates formed?

Leicester v Man City team news: Haaland out, Foden a sub

If we take a template to be the collective high ownership of a select number of players within FPL, there are a few ways in which they can be formed.

The most obvious way a template can be formed is when the players who comprise it justify their inclusion by virtue of their performances. Liverpool’s historical points machine Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) is an example of a seemingly mandatorily-owned player in recent seasons, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (£12.2m) is an example of one this season. When a few of these ‘must-own’ players emerge at once, the template is never far away.

There are also players who enter the template by virtue of them dramatically outperforming their FPL price. £4.0m Sheffield United ‘defender’ John Lundstram is a good example with his 144 points delivered in the 2019/20 season. Players who offer too good value to be ignored are basic staples of the template.

Now, realistically, the template effect should only be possible in situations where there is a dearth of viable, high-scoring alternatives to complicate matters. However, in such situations, attention will move toward contextual factors, such as a fixture run, and the template will often prevail regardless.

Particularly influential among the template-conducive contextual factors are Double Gameweeks, which might funnel FPL managers towards certain players based on the prospect that they may play twice. Situations like this sometimes create perverse circumstances where great-value, high-scoring assets are overlooked by the template, largely because they don’t have an extra fixture. Brighton’s midfielder Kaoru Mitoma (£5.2m), who has scored four goals in his past five appearances, is an example of a player who, by all rational measures, should be a template player, yet at the time of writing is barely owned by one in ten FPL managers.

The Social Factor

Have you ever wondered why lines of ants (bear with me) always seem to follow the same path? As I understand it, when ants are searching for food sources, they send their scouts out in multiple directions and they all leave a pheromone trail, which other ants can follow, as they go. Because pheromones dissipate over time, the ant who finds the shortest route to food will leave the strongest pheromone trail and, thus, his path becomes the most easily followed by other ants. Before long, more ants are following this trail and the pheromone markers get stronger and stronger until, inevitably, all the ants are following the same trail.

FPL, as we know, is a social game with a large community around it. Though some might argue otherwise, it is likely that time spent among the FPL community will give you an advantage over those who have actual lives. Immersion within the FPL community will, however, also make you more prone to ‘groupthink’, which is a phenomenon that occurs when individuals, often irrationally, reach a consensus opinion through a common desire to ‘fit in’.

Within a community, FPL managers might experience ‘fear of missing out’ when they see multiple other Fantasy managers choosing a particular player (particularly if that FPL manager has a large platform or is considered highly influential) and, through a desire to avoid the anticipated loss that might occur should they not also choose that player, or the stress of having to explain why they didn’t choose him, they may well go ahead and choose that player, whether they truly believe it is the right decision for them or not.

While this ‘bandwagon’ effect can be based in logic (like ants taking the shortest route), it can also be rooted in complete narrative nonsense (like an ant who forgot to shower that day and just ended up being a bit more pheromone-y than usual) but we will often follow the lead because, in FPL as with so many things in life, the potential punishment for deviating from the popular path appears far greater than the potential reward that might come from such acts of individualism.

Consequently, while we often complain about the template as being something that is ‘done to us’, it is, very often, something we in fact do to ourselves.

How we can use the Template to our advantage

FPL Gameweek 7 hot topics: Salah's form, Leicester's defence, three up top

Following the template is not necessarily a bad thing. For example, very few managers will have done well this season without owning Erling Haaland. There is a level of template adherence that is necessary for FPL survival each season. However, it is also, by definition, impossible to do really well in FPL by simply sticking to the template and, if there is truly one skill that defines an elite Fantasy manager, it’s knowing when and where to deviate from the masses.

Now, far be it from me to claim to have this skill myself, let alone be able to teach it, but it stands to reason that it begins by setting yourself a high bar for what information you allow to influence you. Just because a player has high ownership or you see them mentioned a lot within FPL circles, doesn’t mean that they’re the right option for you. In fact, every time a bandwagon or a template emerges, an opportunity emerges right alongside it for those willing to critically examine popular decisions and deviate from them when they believe it makes sense to do so.

This is particularly the case around Double Gameweeks, the importance of which often snowballs in the build-up to them to the point where having the maximum number of Double Gameweek players becomes a seemingly overarching imperative, irrespective of how good the fixtures or player options actually are.

Every Double Gameweek, without exception, a lesser-owned ‘single’ Gameweek player will outperform many of the twice-playing options, yet the question of who the former assets might be is almost entirely absent from the conversation with the vast majority of discussion dedicated toward who the best Double Gameweek assets are. Taking a well-reasoned but contrarian approach in these situations can be the kind of template-busting move that pays off enormously at this and later stages of the season.

In summary; set a high bar for how you are influenced, take a deep breath when it comes to Double Gameweeks and look for smart opportunities to be different and the emergence of a strong template can become the exact opportunity you need to break free from the pack.

It's getting to that point of the season where I feel I need to start planning when to use my remaining chips (FH, WC & BB still in tact).

If GW28 is tipped to be the 'major' BGW but is also followed by what is supposed to be immediately followed by the 'major' DGW29, that is a potential issue for my ideal WC/BB strategy for GW28/29.

I can understand BGW28 will be a popular week for FH users without any other chips but what about those who still have their WC/BB? Is there another potential DGW to target?

Anyone else thinking about their strategy already?

    Cheers,

We should have 2 big DGWs at least so the earlier one (29 from what you're saying) certainly makes most sense for BB. Not sure what I'll do regarding WC, I'll just see when I feel is most useful/needed. I'll try save FH for the last big DGW, can often be a lot on the line for teams fighting relegation or for European spots and always the chance the title is wrapped up so those teams in 1st and 2nd (maybe 3rd too) don't have much to fight for so avoiding them can be helpful. I may end up needing it for a BGW but I'm just going to see how things go.

This hasn't been updated with the GW25 doubles yet but I find it helpful for this kind of long-term planning. I've just played my WC, aiming to BB29, save FH for BGW32 / DGW37

      I'm set for GWs 23 & 25.

Thereafter, I will use FT's and the odd hit to prepare for GW 28, then most likely WC in 29.

Will use FH in 34 if also a big DGW.

      BB whichever week looks best.

The blank in 32 looks horrific, if the FA cup results go the likely way then a huge amount of major teams will be without a game that GW.

Im possibly going to use FH in the blank. WC before that and then BB in 34.

GW29 should have all sides in european competition doubling so you’ll unlikely need to make too many changes to your squad.

Wasn't aware of the potential BGW32 being so severe, leaving the WC/BB still 33/34 may be the better alternative, Cheers

BGW28 looks manageable. My plan is currently FH29, dead end into 32, WC33 and BB 34 but that could change, think the 32 blank could be difficult to navigate so may simply FH32, WC33 and BB34. Certainly think it will be one of those two routes.

Only three big chances conceded in your last four matches, to be fair

Yet with Meslier's form, that's still 5 goals conceded vs West Ham, Villa, Brentford and Forest in the same period

So it's gonna be a parked bus but with a huge hole right at the centre of the bus

          1. The Mentaculus
            • 4 Years

I think that's more because we've been dominating possession, and perhaps also reflective of gamestate, i.e. being 1-0 down. The squad really isn't suited to defending deep - Meslier isn't great with claiming crosses, our full backs are pretty useless, and although we can counter quickly I just don't see inviting pressure as a viable style for these players.

Can you do it for free in the next couple weeks instead? I don't hate playing Toney v Arsenal actually. And the goals have dried up a bit for Fulham against teams that defend deeper, which Forest are doing reasonably well at the moment - think that game will be tighter than it might have looked a few weeks ago.

Two assets I won't go anywhere near for 8.0m atm

Definitely not for 12.5+, and surely not a hit

Unless each one shows drastic improvement

Perfectly fine with this pool of assets over them: Mitoma, Rashford, Saka, Øde, Bruno, Mahrez/Martinelli (might not reach 60 mins, but still explosive stats when on the pitch), Maddison, Mudryk, Kulu

Regardless of fixture quantity, I think that pool can match, come close to, or outscore the two super-premiums between now and GW27. Again, unless the two show drastic improvements soon, especially Salah/Liverpool

Comparing the two: I'd buy neither, sell Salah for a hit, but definitely keep KDB until GW26 if I had him

You could stick a defender in to cover 25. Decent chance of having a fixture in BGW28 too (if Fulham/Sunderland beat Leeds), and a double including nfo in 29. Not a bad option for 4th/5th defender

Is it worth another hit to do patterson to ake / akanji?

You're not benching a doubler which narrows the list down to Salah, Rashford, Mitoma and Kane. When I look at who they are playing against and their recent underlying stats, I would bench Salah.

      Easily

Even if it backfires, it's a form + stats based decision. Nothing to beat yourself over afterwards

If I get Darwin in GW25, I'll probably still bench him vs Bournemouth in 27

We're in relegation form. Our best form player on the FPL site is Alisson with 4.3, and the next is Robbo with 2.7. Attackers are at 2.3 and below. Our highest scorer since the World Cup is Wout Faes with 2 OGs, and some of those games were easy on paper

None of this has looked like a fluke or some shock losses while playing well

Things need to change. Drastically. Soon.

I have Rashford Trippier Mitoma on the bench and I don't wanna get rid of any of them.

Yes since I've already done Bruno to Saka this week. And I'm saving in 24.

Probably more value longer-term in just keeping Botman. I'm planning to field 10 with double Newcastle defence on the bench (+ Rash & Mitoma)

I've looked at it and I think I'll get Mykolenko. And then get Schar in 27.

I can get full 11 this way. And an extra player in 28 and 32 as well. Was gonna get Badiashale instead later but this seems fine as well.

Either Cucu to a City Def or roll FT, probably lean towards the latter

I agree - Cucurella to a City def for the DGW, otherwise I can't see much else

I'd roll it then you have 4 FTs from next GW to plan for GW25.

You have 5 not playing in BGW25 already, and Bueno and Greenwood are dangerous. For those 2 the next couple of games will be telling if they are likely to at least get 1 point for you in BGW25.

Roll and you have plenty of options to get 11 players out though, and you're strong this GW and next already.

Have had a run of red arrows and am considering activating the WC to get a jump start. How does this look?

    Kepa, Ward
    Tripper, Shaw, Gabriel, Ake, Dawson
    Fernandes, Mahrez, Odegaard, Rashford, Mitoma
    Haaland, Kane, Nketiah

Maybe at this point triple Man Utd is a bit much to deal with before the blank, especially if you want Mitoma too. Maybe lose Shaw at least if you wouldn't play him this week anyway

Thank you - I had considered that. Man Utd's fixtures after the blank are pretty good and they are on such good form that I think I'd want 3x Man Utd again after the blank. I'm therefore debating just riding out the blank.

I'd say the squad is too strong if anything! Who you planning to bench this GW?
      Dawson, Mitoma and Shaw?
if you are considering benching Mitoma then why have him over say Andreas who's cheaper as he has BGW25?

I'd think more about who you're planning on starting for the next few GWs and then reassess a cheaper bench so you have more flexibility

What's your current team? Maybe a couple of hits over the next few weeks would be a better strategy?

Suggestions for how to best use my FT?

    A) Botman > Akanji
    B) Bruno > KDB
    C) Martinelli > Saka

    Ramsdale ( Ward)
    White Tripper Shaw( Mee Patterson)
    Mahrez Ødegaard Rashford Bruno Mitoma
    Kane Haaland ( Mitro)
    A- Shaw > Tarkowski
B- Shaw > Aké or Akanji
    C- White & Bruno > A or B & Saka for -4

I'd just do Bruno to Saka for now and sell Shaw later.

Am I too optimistic about my team just owning 4 Blank GW players, still having 1FT for this week, probably rolling that so having 2 FT for GW24 and/or GW25?

You can be honest, harsh, sincere.

    Kepa
    Trippier - Shaw - White
    KDB - Saka - Rashford - Mitoma
    Haaland - Kane - Nketiah

Lovely stuff. Maybe use the spare FT to replace Patterson if nothing else looks obvious in GW24. I'd consider Chelsea, Wolves or the same Everton for replacements

      Good luck 🙂

Might go from Patterson to Tarkowski or a decent GW25 defender next GW, but no priority right now so rolling is the way, thank you!

I'd leave for this GW and roll the other FT.
You're well set for next GW too really, would maybe look to replace Perisic or Patterson so you don't burn a FT.

My team make-up in very similar, I also have Kepa/ Ward, Trippier/ Shaw/ White, Rashford/ Andreas, Haaland/ Kane.

I have Lewis/ Bueno rather than Perisic/ Patterson
Martinelli/ Fernandes/ Almiron (who will be out for Odegaard this GW)
Toney instead of Nketiah (who I thought about but will go Odegaard now as won't bother getting Mahrez in).

Hopefully this team is set to ride out the blanks and has flexibility to jump on the key doublers:

    De Gea
    Trippier, Gabriel, Lewis
Mahrez, Saka (vc), Rashford, Odegaard, Andreas
    Haaland (C), Kane

    Ward, Shaw, Toney, Thomas

Will roll next week to have 2 FTs for DGW25 and 3M ITB

Great Article, you have hit the nail on the head. Many atimes i see how all content creators just copy each other and say exactly the same thing. We have very few independent thinkers. For example this week everyone of them is mentioning how KDB is only benched when city face a team that plays a back 3 without properly acknowledging the original analyst who in fact many of them don't know since they copy each other.
