The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League (UCL) begins next Tuesday – and so does the competition’s official Fantasy game.

We’ll have plenty of coverage on UCL Fantasy over the next week in preparation for the big kick-off, as well as articles throughout the season.

If you’re new to the game or just need a reminder of the rules, check out our ‘how to play’ guide below.

SIGN UP TO PLAY UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FANTASY HERE

Our series of preview articles continues by looking at the best UCL Fantasy goalkeepers on offer.

With a squad of 15 players and substitutions possible between the evenings of a Matchday, having a playing goalkeeper from each half of the group draw is a great way to maximise points. This way, you know that there’ll be an option on both days.

It should be said that many defenders offer more routes to points thanks to potential attacking returns and recovery points. It’s for this reason that many UCL Fantasy managers stick to a combined price of €8.5m-€10m for their two goalkeepers.

With that caveat ringing in your ears, here’s a guide to who’s who.

GROUPS E-H

FPL Gameweek 15 preview: Goalscorer and clean sheet odds

Ederson (€6m) – Manchester City

Manchester City’s fixture against Crvena Zvezda is one of the most appealing of Matchday 1 and many UCL Fantasy managers will be wanting to triple up on the reigning champions. With “Pep Roulette” always a risk, Ederson is probably the safest bet to start the season with as he comes with less risk of being rotated. He’s a six-pointer just waiting to happen.

Marc-André ter Stegen (€6m) – Barcelona

The La Liga champions have a very easy group from a defensive point of view. That, and the fact they were by far the team with the fewest goals conceded in the top five leagues last season, make the German international a solid premium option for the entire group stage phase.

Diogo Costa (€5.5m) – Porto

All the UCL Fantasy managers who owned Diogo Costa last season are probably considering him for this campaign, too. Despite Porto being knocked out during the round of 16, he ended up finishing as the second-highest-scoring goalkeeper only behind finalist Andre Onana. Porto are a competent defensive side as it is but the Portuguese can add to his points tally with an occasional penalty save or even an assist. The fixture against Barcelona in Matchday 2 can also be avoided with the very common strategy of an early Limitless chip.

Janis Blaswich (€4.5m) – RB Lepizig

The best budget option from this side of the draw. Leipzig are not known for their defensive proficiency but Young Boys and Crvena Zvezda are easy enough fixtures, and the clash against Manchester City (it’s best not to remember what happened last season against the Citizens…) falls in Matchday 2 – which again furthers the case for a Limitless chip in that round.

Ivan Provedel (€5.0m) – Lazio

Group E is an interesting one, for sure, and the match-ups between Lazio, Atletico Madrid and Feyenoord could go either way. With Jan Oblak (€6.0m) arguably outclassed by ter Stegen and Ederson as a premium option, Lazio’s shot-stopper gets the nod here. Provedel kept the most clean sheets in Serie A last season and scooped the division’s “best goalkeeper” award at the end of the campaign.

GROUPS A-D

Kepa Arrizabalaga (€5.0m) – Real Madrid

Kepa was supposed to compete with Robert Sanchez at Chelsea when he was priced at only €5.0m in UCL Fantasy but an unlucky injury to Thibaut Courtois has landed him a move to the Spanish capital. Real’s backline is not as strong with the Belgian and Eder Militao both injured, but it’s extremely rare to have such a nailed cheap option from a team expected to go all the way into the final stages of the competition.

Yann Sommer (€4.5m) – Inter

Another player who was criminally underpriced because he was expected to be a backup option before moving to another team. Sommer has started his Inter career very well, and he’s yet to concede a single goal in Serie A this season. Inter also proved to be an extremely solid side in 2022/23, going all the way to the final while registering the most clean sheets in the tournament.

Samuel Soares (€4.0m) – Benfica

Odysseas Vlachodimos moved from Benfica to Nottingham Forest on transfer deadline day, leaving the Portuguese giants with Soares as their main goalkeeper. Benfica share their group with Inter, RB Salzburg and Real Sociedad. With Soares being so cheap, he’s a viable option as an enabler to facilitate a move for the premium UCL Fantasy forwards. He’s also capable of scoring six points in at least a couple of games.

Marko Dmitrovic (€4.5m) – Sevilla

Dmitrovic is another option who could rival Sommer and Soares as the go-to budget goalkeeper from this side of the draw. Sevilla are always a very decent team in UEFA competitions, and although their defence doesn’t look as strong as Inter’s or Benfica’s, the Serbian goalie is a viable option for those Fantasy managers not playing a Limitless in Matchday 2 – as his tough match-ups occur in Matchdays 3-4.

Would you do Martinelli to Maddison or roll the transfer? Rest of the team looks good

I see Foden on the chopping block for some of these teams…
am I missing something or is it just fear of PEP?

Over the season Foden will get a decent amount of points like last year - problem is in any game week he cant be trusted to get minutes. If you have Foden you just need to accept that IMO. He is hard to hold but im keeping.

Yeah I’m just gonna hold til he doesn’t start a game. The minute Pep decides to play with our emotions I’ll get rid. I can’t deal with the anxiety but can’t get rid yet

So how many penalties will Mbeumo be getting at home to Everton? I think Brentford at home are going to put at least three past them with a Mbeumo brace.

Maddison as he looks the most likely to get double digits. Liverpools points are too spread out now, the big haul Salah days are gone he's an 8.5-9 mill player in FPL now. Even when we get a pen I'm praying Szoboszlai or Mac hits it or I'm behind the sofa if Mo steps up

You're right, the only way to get an edge in this game now is to find those weeks to go against Haaland. Son up front at home to Sheffield utd with Haaland away to West ham who have only conceded 4goaks in 4games is the perfect time

    Morning

Trying to decide on whether a hit for Son is worth it this week?

Alternative would be playing Bowen (MCI - H) or Estu (MNU - A).

Not taken any hits so far this season...

I have Bowen and will be playing Estupinan as well. West Ham are home and their attack is on fire at the moment.

Thanks - Yeah, WH have been impressive so far, although City are on a different level.

I have Maddison and Udog so got some Spurs cover.

Perhaps I'll start Bowen with Estu first on bench. (Currently playing Trippier, Chilwell and Udogie in def).

Wildcard! Changes to make?? 2.2m ITB.

    Leno (Areola)
    Dias Cash Udogie (Henry Estupiñán)
    Saka Son Maddison Diaby Mbuemo
    Haaland Darwin (Archer)

Feels uncomfortable ditching Salah even to improve team on WC… and can’t decide between Son and Maddison so currently have both.

Diaby / Mbuemo (or one of the above) could also be a MUN mid, and also tossing up Darwin vs Diaz

Looks good, but I'm not sure on Darwin. His minutes are hard to predict, especially with EL starting next week.

I like Awoniyi on a WC. He has Burnley and Luton in next 5 fixtures.

That looks really great. I definitely wouldn’t pick a ManU mid over mbeumo. Diaby looking good also with good fixture coming up.
Not sold on Darwin yet, but could go either way. Would prob just go Alvarez in the interim and see what plays out.

Anyone playing WC GW9 or 10?

I sat down and did a spread sheet and from GW10 with a defence of Estupinan, Dunk, Konate, Cash and Botman (picking fixtures between them) they will be pretty much playing the likes of Everton, BOU, Fulham, Luton, SHU and Burnley week in and out up to GW18.

Already played my WC, but I wouldn't pick Dunk or Konate regardless of fixtures.

Brighton haven't kept a single CS and Dunk is 0.5m too expensive. Konate coming back from an injury and has EL games in mid-week.

I'd go with Udogie, Henry or a Palace defender over either of the above.

      1. FOO FIGHTER

Even with Brighton's leaky defence, they kept as many cleanies as City last season.

You're conflating 2 issues here. Last season they had Caicedo and MacAllister. This season, it's without them that the defence is leaky.

Both Dunk and Estu will be capable of attacking returns against those defences.

You wil probably be picking Dunk and Estupinan Vs Ful (H), EVE (A), SHU (H), NFO (A) and BUR (H) for the run which is pretty good.

Week 9 WC for me. By then we should have a vague sense of the rotation policy for each of the CL clubs.

My biggest headaches at the moment are Gvardiol (brought in for Stones but clearly not going to set FPL on fire) and Jackson - currently the attacking equivalent of Harry Maguire but surely due a bumper week in one of Chelsea’s next four fixtures?!

Good Morning Guys! Hope you are all well.

I would like your advice on the following moves. I have 2FT and have a bit of a luxury move and a potential forced move with the introduction of 2 new goalkeepers at Forest and Palace and with the fixture swing of Newcastle coming up, so wanted all of your opinions before doing so.

    Team;

    Turner / Johnstone
    Chilwell / Estupinan / Udogie / Kabore / Beyer
    Rashford / Fernandes / Saka / Maddison / Nakamba
    Watkins / Haaland / Jackson

    A) Watkins and Nakamba - Alvarez and Diaby
    B) Johnstone - Flekken
    C) Kabore - Botman

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 10 months ago

I like B, with Turner starting this GW and then maybe going for Areola if/when he's actually dropped

I think it would be easier to rotate 4 or 5 defenders than 8 attackers, so I'd prioritise C for next GW

You might even end up preferring Darwin to Alvarez, but let's see how that pans out. Watkins isn't a fire sale to me yet. Losing a Man U mid might become more important soon enough, but maybe after Burnley

Reguilon wasn't even good enough to start for the Spurs. If he was, they wouldn't send him on two straight loans to Atletico Madrid and a rival (?). He was a panic buy and may start because Shaw is unavailable, but I'm not convinced he's even close to being a good FPL option.

I'll probably go Semenyo to Foster and park him on the bench except when the fixture is too good. It means Botman over Schär, but not much wrong there

Gonna drop him down to Archer with an otherwise burnt FT later

I wouldn't get either of them as a second forward in a 3-5-2 (say, JP to Morris) when the 6m+ lads are in better attacks

Maybe jumping on the hype train but could Bellingham become the greatest English player ever if he keeps on the path he's on? I haven't seen anyone this good this young in my lifetime.

There have been many wonderkids who foundered by the wayside, but yes, potentially he could develop into England's Zidane. I wonder if there is any Zizou DNA stashed still in Real waters.

Thoughts on Saka who is 50/50 at the moment for me. Even considered taking him out for Son or Maddison this week. He has not been at his best but perhaps now with Jesus back the Arsenal attack will take some shape again?

Still considering Spurs attack this week but not sure I should remove Saka, yet.

If you dont have any spurs in at all i would wait until after the liverpool game, i would maybe consider maddisson since his history is usually that he hits a high and then falls of a cliff and i think we're in that high right now

Dont underztand why people are so keen on moving out Estupinan unless you have a WC of course.

You will want him back from GW10 and his fixtures are plum up to GW18 with only Arsenal GW17.

With him I am not going to give two hoots about clean sheets. I am playing him vs UTD and could even do the same vs City and LFC.

    1. Dankelichious

      fair point

    2. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years

Moved him on as planned in GW4. Will bring back for Chilwell in GW10

      Current backline:
Chilwell Disasi(Botman soon) Henry Udogie Cash

Rotating back 3. Why did I move him out? I won't play him enough times until GW10. I know I could miss out on some massive Bournemouth and/or Villa hauls though

It's also why I'll move out the very attacking Chilwell in GW9+: fixtures and there'll be transfers to get him back in GW16, probably along with Sterling and James

Brighton and Chelsea aren't particularly strong defences (unlike the days of Trent Robbo Cancelo Alonso), so there's the chance of 0 or negative points in those tough games. Good fixtures raise the chances of both clean sheets and attacking returns, especially when there are other strong assets in the game. It's why Disasi is my Botman/Schär placeholder as well

I hope that makes it easier to understand...

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 6 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

Next 3 are UTD, BOU and Villa which are not the most watertight defences.

You own Estupinan for attacking returns.

That can't seriously be all you got from my reply. You said you didn't understand why. I explained why

You and I must be using the same planner - or planning logic. I'm keeping Chilwell on my current WC whilst losing Estu, but bringing him back for Chil but bringing the latter back GW16-17 and keep Estu for the season.

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 7 Years
              2 years, 10 months ago

Yeah. Seeing what the likes of Udogie, Henry and Villa full backs are doing, I'm way more comfortable with rotating based on fixtures than I was in preseason. Back then, I thought it would be Chilwell Estupiñán Saliba/Gabriel set-and-forget with two benched 4.0 defs. Things could change again soon anyway

I like to have 5 defenders with 3 always having 'easy' fixtures, even if they have attacking intent. The idea of not caring about defenders picking up clean sheet points seems a nonsense to me.

great news to hear that hacker and whistleblower Rui Pinto avoided prison which shows the courts recognised the work he did in exposing corruption in football . To this day I'm baffled by the CAS ruling on Manchester City which was that the owners were disguising equity funds as sponsorship deals, something that came out in the leaks. they were cleared of that even though they were found guilty of not cooperating with uefa, with the latter surely making the first part of that sentence pretty much redundant.

It's sideways. Both can deliver in any game, I prefer Ode in games against low blocks (eve, bou) as he will come onto the cut back and shoot from 18-25 yards. Saka against bigger teams (TOT) is more of a threat when he has space to turn and run.
