The pre-season friendlies are really picking up now, with 16 Premier League teams in action on Saturday and Sunday.

In this Scout Notes article, we’ll cover any standout Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Arsenal v Newcastle United.

ARSENAL 3-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Merino, Odegaard pen | Elanga, J Murphy
  • Assists: Havertz x2, Dowman | Tonali, Miley
GYOKERES ON PENS?

In the aftermath of Sunday’s 3-2 win over Newcastle, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hinted that new signing Viktor Gyokeres could replace Bukayo Saka (£10.0m) on penalties.

Saka has been first-choice in recent seasons, but has occasionally let others step up to take one.

He also took the last spot-kick of 2024/25 in the UEFA Champions League in April, but missed.

Meanwhile, Gyokeres, who was paraded on the pitch shortly before kick-off, successfully converted all 19 penalties he took while playing for Sporting CP last season, highlighting his ability from 12 yards.

“Well, I’m sure that he will step in if they allow him to do so, because as you say he’s been very consistent and he’s scored many goals, but we have some other penalty takers, really good ones as well. So, they will resolve it themselves and if not, I will intervene in the right moment!” – Mikel Arteta on Viktor Gyokeres’ ability from the penalty spot

ISAK’S FUTURE

Another big talking point in Asia was Alexander Isak (£10.5m), who is absent from Newcastle’s travelling squad amid transfer speculation and a reported thigh injury.

Speaking before Sunday’s friendly, Eddie Howe said:

“Of course, there are things going on behind the scenes. He will be aware he is in the news every day and I’m sure that is not easy for anyone in that situation. Conversations that happen with Alex and the club, or Alex and myself, will stay private for obvious reasons.

“We do share a good relationship. He has been magnificent for us since he joined. He’s very popular in the dressing room. We would love him to continue his journey at Newcastle. Although, whatever happens has to be right for Newcastle. Hopefully he’ll be back soon and playing in the black and white shirt. That’s what we all want to see.

“He first mentioned his thigh before the Celtic game. We assumed it would be a very minimal injury, nothing too serious. I think on Monday after the Celtic game, he went in for training very early and he didn’t feel right.” – Eddie Howe on Alexander Isak

In Isak’s absence, William Osula (£5.5m) led the line and was the only outfield player not to be substituted at half-time, showing just how threadbare Newcastle are in this position right now.

He generally did very well, too, flashing a header wide of the far post.

Howe later described Osula’s performance as “much better” than against Celtic, highlighting his work ethic.

DOWMAN IMPRESSES / HAVERTZ’S ASSISTS

Martin Zubimendi (£5.5m) and youngster Max Dowman were arguably the standout players for Arsenal.

Dowman crowned a superb display by tricking his way past Joelinton (£6.0m) on the right touchline, gliding into the area and coming down under the Brazilian’s challenge to win a penalty.

The spot-kick was successfully converted by Martin Odegaard (£8.0m) after Saka had been substituted.

Notably, the Norwegian recorded a total of four shots, the most of any player.

Kai Havertz (£7.5m), meanwhile, was involved in both of Arsenal’s open play goals, first assisting Mikel Merino (£6.0m) with a tidy lay off inside the box, before his teasing low cross was thumped into his own net by Newcastle defender Alex Murphy (£4.0m).

ELANGA + MURPHY GOALS

The Magpies had previously taken the lead via a scuffed Anthony Elanga (£7.0m) effort.

The Sweden international lasted 45 minutes on his full debut before being replaced by Jacob Murphy (£6.5m).

Murphy also found the net, levelling it up with a low shot.

As a result, Howe now has choices on the right wing, as both players served as their team’s best attacking threat in each half.

Elsewhere, Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m) and Sven Botman (£5.0m) both had to come with injuries.

“Yeah, he said that he felt a little tweak, so I don’t know how big it is but hopefully not.” – Mikel Arteta on Riccardo Calafiori

“I did not see him struggling. He came off and said his groin was tight. Fingers crossed he’s okay.” – Eddie Howe on Sven Botman

Arsenal XI: Raya (Kepa 59); White (Nicholas 77), Saliba (Salmon 77), Calafiori (Kiwior 49), Lewis-Skelly (Zinchenko 77); Zubimendi (Norgaard 77), Nwaneri (Odegaard 46), Merino (Rice 70); Saka (Dowman 59), Trossard (Harriman-Annous 77), Havertz (Martinelli 59)

Newcastle United XI: Pope (Ruddy 73); Trippier (Livramento 46), Lascelles (Botman 46, Ashby 70), Burn (Krafth 46), A Murphy (Targett 46); Tonali (Joelinton 46), Guimaraes (Miley 46), Willock (Schar 46); Elanga (J Murphy 46), Gordon (Barnes 46), Osula (Neave 73)

Hi all. I posted this yesterday and got exactly 50-50 answers. Which one would you pick and why??

    A. Rodgers/hudson odoi/piroe

    Or

    B. Ndiaye/reijnders/welbeck

    Thanks all

      B. Because Piroe will be a minutes risk when/if Leeds get another striker. I also owned CHO for a while last season and it was pretty underwhelming.

Yeah, I'd agree with the above.

B feels better balanced, plus you've got a couple of pen takers. It's not the be-all and end-all, but nice to have.

He did. Which is what makes me nervous about going against the 60% backing him.

He was in the auto-pick team so don't think it's a true 60%

Not sure what the appeal is really - doubt he'll play as an out-and-out 9 a lot (probably slot in behind Delap, with Palmer out wide) and he'll have lost penalties, which made up half his goal tally last season.

Hey guys, just a small update here. Launched the FPL Draft Manager website (https://fpldraftmanager.replit.app/) where you can create, save, view and rate FPL drafts for free! You can rate and submit unlimited number of drafts as long as you are able to come up with unique names for them :D. Always felt like screenshoting a bunch of drafts in preseason wasn't really practical so decided to create this for myself first, but since I found it useful I wanted to share it with the community as well. Feel free to start creating!
Any feedback is gladly welcomed! Thanks!

      I like it, good job!

A couple of things for feedback:
      - The "position" dropdown could be a row of checkboxes + a clear checkbox.
      - A "reset" button would be nice to reset all filters
      - Clicking the + in the image to the right would also be nice.
      - Something that only shows available players, I don't want to have to scroll through unavailable players.

My favorite site for this so far is planfpl.com just because it's so effortless to use.

      1. Klokan

Thanks, checkboxes are much more user friendly, will try working on that first.
Can you explain what you mean by available players? For example if you picked 5 MIDs you would expect not to be able to see any more MIDs or?

        1. Zalk
          • 14 Years
          11 months, 23 days ago

Yes exactly, but don't take my word for it. Some might want to view all players in the list, I'm not sure. That was just a thought!

Redeployed now with the box selection for positions, reset filter button and max price slider. Also some updates on the backend site for rating the drafts.
Will leave all players that fit the filter visible, kinda fits my initial idea more. Once again thanks for the feedback and feel free to check the updated version. 🙂

RMT please, I keep tinkering but I'm almost set on this...

    Verbruggen
    Ait-Nouri / Milenkovic / Colwill / Rodon
    Salah / Palmer / Rogers / Anderson
    Haaland / Piroe

    Bench: Kinsky, Mayenda, Ramsey, Esteve

I'm trying to find the balance between a decent defence and not compromising on Salah x Haaland x Palmer... Piroe is obvs the weak link but with strong pre-season he's quite under-the-radar I feel

      • 7 Years

I‘d take ran out and and structure the defence a bit differently, then one of mayenda/piroe down and get jsl or welbeck imo

anyone thinking of going anderson or similar as 4th mid for the first 5-6 to have more info and see what options emerge? I feel like youre gonna get safe 20 points and some extra funds to stack the rest of the attack

    1. bigrussianlegend
      • 8 Years

This is my current thinking (team above) and it enables Salah, Palmer, Haaland which is nice - and a decent defence. With new DC rules he could be a midfield stalwart. What's your outfit looking like?

      1. luk46
        • 7 Years
        11 months, 23 days ago

ye I think hes gonna hit about 150 for the season which is great value

havent got haaland personally, but thinking about something like this:
        sanchez
        murillo tarkowski konsa
        salah palmer ndiaye anderson
        watkins gyokeres solanke
        4 richards esteve 4.5

        1. bigrussianlegend
          • 8 Years
          11 months, 23 days ago

Nice one, looks well balanced - Tarkowski is a good shout based on his DC projections from last season. I take your point about RAN and I've come up with...

          Verbruggen
          Guehi Rodon Milenkovic Colwill
          Salah Palmer Anderson James
          Haaland Gyokeres

Again, a bit rogue but I think James could be a nice prospect at 5.5. Still just desperately trying to wedge in all 3 big hitters and make room for Gyok too

          1. luk46
            • 7 Years

looks decent tho I think 343 or 352 still the way to go personally,
more balance if just one of salah or haaland in there although you get a decent 6.5 ish mid/forward in there

I'll probably keep Anderson in my squad for the whole season to keep the tally going. He made 12+ DC's in 16 of his last 24 matches, so under the new system he would have scored at least 4 points in two thirds of those matches, even before other potential extras like a clean sheet point, assists or goals.

Fair enough. Waiting for GW3 for Liverpool? Or going with Wirtz from the start?

          Got Wirtz

Good stuff. Haaland has the better first three

I like (C) Salah for GWs 1, 4, 5 & 6, especially with our improved attack. Hence starting with him

Yeah I'm willing to risk it. Haaland's ownership only 18,5%, so a bit of a differential atm.

Same, Salah Palmer Gyokeres looks like best bet from the start. Gyo price even allows it to surround them with solid ones like Rogers, Welbeck etc.

        Yeah. Looking at this now:

        Kelleher
        N.Williams Cucurella Aït-Nouri
        Salah Palmer Kluivert Rogers
        Gyökeres Wood Welbeck
        .
        Valdimarsson Rodon Estève A.Ramsey

Good team. Bar Welbeck, who is crocked most of the time and RAN, who could get rotated easily.

            Thanks

I'd sell Welbeck if he gets injured. It's not a zombie team. I like what he does when fit, and now he might have pens:

            https://www.transfermarkt.com/danny-welbeck/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/67063/plus/0/saison/2024/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/1237

RAN is the one major gamble for starts outside Ramsey (3rd sub), so I'm fine with taking just one risk. Could be my first transfer out, but I don't like the 6GW outlook for other defenders I fancy... Outside Robinson and Senesi, funnily enough. But I want to see how Fulham and Bournemouth defences start the season

Yeah Fulham really struggled to keep clean sheets last season. Robinson only scored so well because of all the assists he was getting.

I can’t imagine Saka being a popular pick at £1m more than Gyokeres who will probably steal his penalty duties. Probably underpriced Gyo.

Saka is an established PL player with a history of scoring well. This comes at a premium.

    RMT

    Trafford
    / Milenkovic / AWB / Guehi
    Salah / Palmer / Rogers / Wirtz
    Wood / Gyokeres / Strad-Larsen
    4.0 / Konsa / 4.0 / 4.5

    Thanks

would you weaken Wirtz for now to 7.5 and put 1.0 into defence?

Thoughts on this BB Gw 1 Draft? Fairly settled on starting with Haaland over Salah, the only week I would want Liv attack/Salah is gw 4 where I have considered a FH, as Pool, New and Palace have good fixtures that gw...will likely WC Gw13 for the fixture swing.

    Sanchez
    Murillo VVD Neco
    Palmer Rogers Ndiaye Anderson
    Solanke Watkins Haaland

    4.5 Christie Udogie Konsa

    Best option:

    A) Mateus Cunha
    B) Bryan Mbeumo

I'm going with A atm. Don't know why really. Maybe I just see Cunha as more of a threat.

Latest draft with Gyok included. Thoughts would be appreciated

    Verbrug
    Myko Konsa Colwill
    Palmer Gakpo Wirtz Ndiaye
    Solanke Haaland (c) Gyokeres

    Petrovic, Baleba, Hickey, Tuanzebe

    A or B?

    A) Salah, Beto(bench fodder) and Guehi
    B) Haaland, Reijinders(bench fodder) and Aina

      • 7 Years
      11 months, 23 days ago

Prefer N.Williams to Aina due to Nico's rate of DCs (Antonee Robinson too, btw)

      Haaland + Williams, if there's a GW3 plan

Salutations! I am seeing a lot of teams with Palmer in them. Did nobody watch him/Chelsea last season? Debating the triple up with Gyo, Saka and Gabriel

      Hi smasher!

Fixtures, CWC (team seemed to finally click together)... And Palmer's randomly explosive potential, meaning it's safer to jump off than jump on, imo

Alright mate - they did play well for the CWC but nobody was taking it too seriously. I may get him in as he is more expensive than Saka and downgrade to Saka is it doesn’t work out given his ownership.

The same Chelsea side that finished 4th and hammered PSG 3-0 a couple of weeks ago? Opening fixtures favourable, they started quick last season too.

Palmer is the only viable Chelsea attacking cover. Every single other player in that team is a massive rotation risk.

CWC aside, the same Palmer who went missing for how many games last season...

Can see Saka easily giving up pens. He's usually very keen on handing them away anyway now there is someone with a much much better record.

    VVD,N.Williams,Konsa

    Petrovic,Baleba,De Cuyper,Esteve

Don't think Petrovic and Esteve are boostable for GW1. Maybe drop Sanchez to a 4.5m keeper, Petrovic to someone else and upgrade Esteve.

Strand Larsen is at home to City too and Konsa has Newcastle.

Fast going off bench boosting with Salah and Palmer in the squad.

Cheap bench but wasnt planning BB early - thoughts?
