The pre-season friendlies are really picking up now, with 16 Premier League teams in action on Saturday and Sunday.

In this Scout Notes article, we’ll cover any standout Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Arsenal v Newcastle United.

ARSENAL 3-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Merino, Odegaard pen | Elanga, J Murphy
  • Assists: Havertz x2, Dowman | Tonali, Miley
GYOKERES ON PENS?

In the aftermath of Sunday’s 3-2 win over Newcastle, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hinted that new signing Viktor Gyokeres could replace Bukayo Saka (£10.0m) on penalties.

Saka has been first-choice in recent seasons, but has occasionally let others step up to take one.

He also took the last spot-kick of 2024/25 in the UEFA Champions League in April, but missed.

Meanwhile, Gyokeres, who was paraded on the pitch shortly before kick-off, successfully converted all 19 penalties he took while playing for Sporting CP last season, highlighting his ability from 12 yards.

“Well, I’m sure that he will step in if they allow him to do so, because as you say he’s been very consistent and he’s scored many goals, but we have some other penalty takers, really good ones as well. So, they will resolve it themselves and if not, I will intervene in the right moment!” – Mikel Arteta on Viktor Gyokeres’ ability from the penalty spot

ISAK’S FUTURE

Another big talking point in Asia was Alexander Isak (£10.5m), who is absent from Newcastle’s travelling squad amid transfer speculation and a reported thigh injury.

Speaking before Sunday’s friendly, Eddie Howe said:

“Of course, there are things going on behind the scenes. He will be aware he is in the news every day and I’m sure that is not easy for anyone in that situation. Conversations that happen with Alex and the club, or Alex and myself, will stay private for obvious reasons.

“We do share a good relationship. He has been magnificent for us since he joined. He’s very popular in the dressing room. We would love him to continue his journey at Newcastle. Although, whatever happens has to be right for Newcastle. Hopefully he’ll be back soon and playing in the black and white shirt. That’s what we all want to see.

“He first mentioned his thigh before the Celtic game. We assumed it would be a very minimal injury, nothing too serious. I think on Monday after the Celtic game, he went in for training very early and he didn’t feel right.” – Eddie Howe on Alexander Isak

In Isak’s absence, William Osula (£5.5m) led the line and was the only outfield player not to be substituted at half-time, showing just how threadbare Newcastle are in this position right now.

He generally did very well, too, flashing a header wide of the far post.

Howe later described Osula’s performance as “much better” than against Celtic, highlighting his work ethic.

DOWMAN IMPRESSES / HAVERTZ’S ASSISTS

Martin Zubimendi (£5.5m) and youngster Max Dowman were arguably the standout players for Arsenal.

Dowman crowned a superb display by tricking his way past Joelinton (£6.0m) on the right touchline, gliding into the area and coming down under the Brazilian’s challenge to win a penalty.

The spot-kick was successfully converted by Martin Odegaard (£8.0m) after Saka had been substituted.

Notably, the Norwegian recorded a total of four shots, the most of any player.

Kai Havertz (£7.5m), meanwhile, was involved in both of Arsenal’s open play goals, first assisting Mikel Merino (£6.0m) with a tidy lay off inside the box, before his teasing low cross was thumped into his own net by Newcastle defender Alex Murphy (£4.0m).

ELANGA + MURPHY GOALS

The Magpies had previously taken the lead via a scuffed Anthony Elanga (£7.0m) effort.

The Sweden international lasted 45 minutes on his full debut before being replaced by Jacob Murphy (£6.5m).

Murphy also found the net, levelling it up with a low shot.

As a result, Howe now has choices on the right wing, as both players served as their team’s best attacking threat in each half.

Elsewhere, Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m) and Sven Botman (£5.0m) both had to come with injuries.

“Yeah, he said that he felt a little tweak, so I don’t know how big it is but hopefully not.” – Mikel Arteta on Riccardo Calafiori

“I did not see him struggling. He came off and said his groin was tight. Fingers crossed he’s okay.” – Eddie Howe on Sven Botman

Arsenal XI: Raya (Kepa 59); White (Nicholas 77), Saliba (Salmon 77), Calafiori (Kiwior 49), Lewis-Skelly (Zinchenko 77); Zubimendi (Norgaard 77), Nwaneri (Odegaard 46), Merino (Rice 70); Saka (Dowman 59), Trossard (Harriman-Annous 77), Havertz (Martinelli 59)

Newcastle United XI: Pope (Ruddy 73); Trippier (Livramento 46), Lascelles (Botman 46, Ashby 70), Burn (Krafth 46), A Murphy (Targett 46); Tonali (Joelinton 46), Guimaraes (Miley 46), Willock (Schar 46); Elanga (J Murphy 46), Gordon (Barnes 46), Osula (Neave 73)

    Kelleher

All CBs though... But they work at their prices, so that's fine

Got a Salah GW3+ plan, or seeing (C) Haaland through?

I'm sure you're aware of the Kudus risk and Semenyo's many missed shots, but they could work out well

Yeah, that's my only dillema - Salah or Haaland team. I choose Haaland only because I think Salah will not score so many points at start with all those transfers upfront.

We don't for sure, but expect to find out. There are other 6.5 assets or cheaper to choose from, so changing him to Rice or downgrading to make upgrade elsewhere is hardly an issue.

Salah + Haaland draft - and yes I know it's v weak at the back and on the bench:

    Kelleher,
    Konsa, AWB, VdV
    Salah, Palmer, Kudus, Rogers, Baleba

Guehi + fodder on the bench

Looking at YouTube now has become fun. There is a CC bubble where they "all" plan to BB gw1. It has It's merits, but one of the cons is that some teams look like they are going to lose their BB "advantage" very fast. Having 9.5 or 9 tued to goalkeepers and planning late WC can't be optimal. Since the plan is to win both casuals and those who stream and have huge herds following, playing with different strategy is nice differential itself. I believe that opportunities will rise. Chance of a dgw is small, but it does exist. Injuries happen and we might get starting 4.0 gk for example.

not just CC's, it's a common theme on here as well. Even with their reach, the BB crowd still be in the minority so maybe it's too early to start bashing the CC's?

BB GW1 is a disaster waiting to happen and I can't believe it's actually got traction on here - a community that likes to pretend they're better than the "sheep who get spoon-fed by content creators."

Pick nailed players and it's not too difficult. The fixtures aren't great for it this year though. Something like below could work (1.5m ITB):

            Pickford 4.5m or Kinsky
            VVD Tark Konsa AWB VDV
            Salah Wirtz Rogers Ndiaye Caicedo
            Bowen Solanke Welbeck

Not sure it’s worth sacrificing the big hitters to play a crap keeper, a DM and 2 bad defenders

Isn't that what happens on most BB's? There is 1.5m ITB to upgrade. There are now DC points in play. I'd say 12 points from the first BB is doing well.

I'd be interested to see what you end up BB'ing with but you won't say!

I'd be more interested in what you end up BB'ing with as opposed to when. It will take transfers to set up and then back out the BB or a WC.

You're into Christmas rotation around then with injuries coming thick and fast. There is lots that can go wrong no matter when you first BB.

BBgw 1 was a great idea last two seasons. Started off with a ge rank of 40k and 2k last two years

However, the fixtures and the prices don't allow it this year at all.

I bet 1/3 of the content creators bottle their BB in the last minute and don't tell their fans.

We will probably get some leak and a BB mainstay won't be starting, and they wont have a backup plan, then pretend they didn't have inside info xD

    Sanchez - 4.0

    Isak- Gyokeres - 4.5

That price for Gyokeres; is it half a mill on the low side or about right?

    Anyway, first Gyokeres draft

    Kelleher
    VVD Milenkovic Cucurella
    Palmer Wirtz Kluivert Anderson Reijnders
    Haaland Gyokeres

    Kinsky Muniz De Cuyper Esteve.

Not initially. What’s the dynamic with an all-new front 3/4 going to be like? I fancy Haaland out of the blocks, and it’s an easy switch if I’m wrong. Can’t really have them both like I did last year.

Funds feel a bit too stretched out here, somehow, as Muniz isn't a nailed first sub and you'd rarely ever play De Cuyper

Perma-start one of the two 5.5 mids (Anderson for me), then raise funds to boost the 7th attacker while relegating the 8th attacker to a non-starting 4.5 mid/fwd 3rd sub

That way, De Cuyper gets the chance to come into play if you need a sub

Fair point, I feel like a premium keeper is so frustrating when they don’t bank a clean sheet while a cheaper one feels like a win when they do. Plus the cheaper keeper is not from a top side and far likelier to be kept busy and rack up more save points generally speaking.

its fair points but gakpo in the league at least seemed to be slot's main go to for lw last season once diaz played striker. maybe ive got it wrong but slot always seemed pretty content with gakpo's level/output last season. just thinking if liverpool dont bring in a specialist lw winger then it means slot is happy with gakpo being number 1 there

Hello fellas. How do you like my latest draft? Continuing with successful tactics from last year of having a playable bench and attacking "weaker" fixtures while benching solid assets who has a tough ones.

      Areola
      Milenković, Tarkowski, Reinildo
      Salah, Palmer, Rogers, Ndiaye, Kudus
      Welbeck, Gyokeres

      Petrović, Evanilson, Konsa, Esteve

Kudus, Evanilson and Ndiaye rotate well, as well as Reinildo, Konsa & Esteve. The others are mainstay, at least for first 5 gameweeks.
