With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) just days away, we’re getting team reveals from our team of pundits and Hall of Famers.

Here, three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser shares two drafts that he’s narrowed down to – one with Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) and one without.

Lateriser triple Forest

We’re getting closer and closer to the end game and I find myself narrowing down my decisions – or I hope so, anyway.

On Sunday, I was debating two Gameweek 1 drafts: one which involved Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) and the other which didn’t.

BRUNO DRAFT

The one that involves Fernandes looks like this:

Bruno Gameweek 1

I was objectively thinking very, very hard about Bruno on the weekend.

PROS

  • He’s an absolute minutes machine, a 90-minute man who does a lot of good work in the final 20 minutes.
  • He’s on penalties and I expect us to win a lot more spot-kicks this season due to the runs of Amad Diallo (£6.5m), Matheus Cunha (£8.0m), Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) and Patrick Dorgu (£4.5m).
  • Even if he plays deeper, he’s pretty decisive in many moments because he’s Bruno Fernandes. He’s built for output.
  • We are a lot better at set pieces compared to six months ago and he takes them from one side. Mbeumo takes them from the other side
  • The presence of Benjamin Sesko (£7.5m) means Fernandes might get a few more assists as he places himself in the half space on the right side a lot for a whipping cross inside the box.
  • He’s got high defensive contribution (DC/DEFCON) potential for an attacker, registering DC points in 33% of his outings last season. This gives him a very high floor with minutes, penalties, set pieces, DEFCON and open-play potential.
  • He’s playing with better players this season. Better utilisers of the ball and better finishers, which means that he should get more assists. There might be some more cut-backs from the likes of Cunha and Mbeumo, instead of the likes of Alejandro Garnacho (£6.5m), who just cuts in and shoots.

All in all, he’s a really good asset with a high floor.

CONS

  • He’s pretty expensive. That £9.0m price tag is a slightly odd one for someone who plays relatively deeper compared to others in that price bracket.
  • The fixtures at the start of the season are pretty difficult for United with Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea in the first five games. Even Fulham are pretty good defensively. How many goals will the Red Devils score in these games? The ceiling doesn’t seem that high.
  • Given the above two points, it does feel like you can take him on, given you’re only likely to captain him in Gameweek 3 against Burnley.
  • The goals might be spread around a little bit this year with Sesko, Mbeumo and Cunha added to share the load.

Now, with the draft above, I realised that my defence felt really light. I could go for a bigger downgrade and opt to lose Ollie Watkins (£9.0m) instead but he’s had a fabulous pre-season and Aston Villa have good fixtures at the start of the campaign. Below is very encouraging as well:

“Pre-season is crucial for yourself as a player. It sets the foundations for you going into the season. Last season I didn’t have that. I didn’t play in any pre-season games so I was trying to play catch-up. For me, it’s massive to play these games, feel good, get your confidence up and go into the season all guns blazing.” – Ollie Watkins

So I played around with downgrading Bruno Fernandes to one of Ismaila Sarr (£6.5m)/Georgino Rutter (£6.0m)/Morgan Rogers (£7.0m) and this is what I built.

DRAFT WITHOUT BRUNO

Before I finish, let me point you in the direction of a recent video we have done with Josh Williams, who does excellent work for The Anfield Wrap and LFC TV (and is one of the best when it comes to Liverpool). He discusses the nuances of the Reds, which you can view below:

I've gone with a Haaland/Salah team to start. I think a lot of people don't like the amount of money invested in Haaland & Salah, so they're trying to spread it around.

    4. pjomara

Salah and Haaland are so expensive, that they're only worth those prices if they're captain, and can only captain one.
If alternating each 50% of time still gives a poor ROI. Pick one

    Comments on this team please?

I'm thinking if I should downgrade one of Watkins, Saka or VVD to turn Reijnders into a 6.5/7.0 (probably Rogers if he's fit).

Mostly trying to go for solid predictable picks, not too punty.

    Kelleher
    Vvd Milenko Konsa
    Salah Palmer Saka Anderson Reijnders
    Watkins Bowen

    Dub Guiu Rodon Esteve

Aware I have some flags, will keep an eye on them.

And they'll mostly get the defcons during bad fixtures too, when you're less likely to own/play them.

    Palmer Fernandes Wirtz Reijnders
    Watkins Pedro Ekitike
    (Dubravka Paqueta Diouf Rodon)

0.5m ITB for Ekitike > Gyokeres in GW2. I'm a little tempted to do it. But it's certainly scary to have no Haaland or Salah and no realistic way to get them before first WC.

It looks really good on paper, but personally i dont want to go behind the sofa on the very first day of the PL campaign when the half of the world has Salah for captain. At the very least I want to wait for the mid-season to make maverick behind-the-sofa moves xD

I don't mind taking it on if I feel it's the the right play. I'll think about it. The team on paper is amazing for a BB1 and even for a few weeks it does fine. Bit worried about GW4 without Salah (c) and GW5 Haaland looks best but there are ways to get them by then if need be.

For a game against Sunderland, yeah I think they're very good.

It's gonna be hard to setup a BB where you have better fixtures than this.

Funny cos if you were setting up with Guiu, you'd say Sunderland had a good fixture haha

I mean, even if you want to stick with those players, GW8 is better and that's just from a quick flick through the fixtures list.

I need Salah or Haaland so I can switch one to the other depending on form
I can't afford both without compromising the wider team
I'm on Salah (Guiu) and I can switch to Haaland (King / Potts) later
I'm starting with Watkins who can switch to Gyökeres later
    Is this right?

Feels like this is the best for me, avoiding the 5.5mid condurum.
However, it may have to shuffle if Rogers' fitness still in doubt.

    Sels
    Cucu Milenkovic Diouf
    Palmer Wirtz Rogers I.Sarr
    Haaland Watkins Fullkrug

    Dub Xhaka(or KDH) Dorgu Reinildo

Salah's popularity continues to PLUNGE. Now 3rd:
    Palmer 57.0%
    Pedro 54.2%
    Salah 54.1%

Fantastic, scrambled eggs to bring him in with 5 goals in the first 3 games.

I tried something similar but really disliked the midfield long term when I have Haaland in there.

    This is killing me.

    A. Salah
    B. Haaland
    C. Both
    D. Neither

I need as many answers as possible or I'm due another sleepless night.

    Currently on Salah:

    Verbruggen.
    Cucu. Milenkovic. Diouf.
    Salah. Palmer. Tielmans. Reindeer.
Watkins. Pedro. Bowen (1m in bank for Gyro next week).

    Dub. DH. Esteve. Dorgu.

A imo, Haaland & Salah has too many compromises.

I think what you have is fine. You obviously view Palmer as essential, so the decision has to be made between Haaland or Salah, because trying to fit all 3 premiums is not a valid strategy IMO. I tried for weeks to fit all 3 in and you end up with a woeful team.
I decided to go with Salah & Haaland with no Palmer, but it's really down to personal preference.

    Kelleher Vlad
    Williams Konsa Vdv Anderson Dorgu
    Palmer Reijnders Kdh _______. _______.
    Haaland Fullkrug _______.

    A) Salah Mitoma Larsen
    B) Wirtz Saka Watkins

Considering I have loads of backup with playable defenders on the bench incase reijnders/Kdh/Fullkrug fails I'm pretty happy taking a risk with A) at the start of the season.
I trust Mitoma week in week out as long as he is fit and Larsen has a great run from Gw2 in the medium term so wouldn't mind playing him every week . Plus Salah obviously

    B) gives me flexibility though since Wirtz, Saka, Watkins are basically 3 premiums who can almost guarantee 200 points each (and they let me jump to Bruno/Gyokeres etc)
