The 2025/26 UEFA Champions League (UCL) campaign begins on Tuesday – and so does the competition’s official Fantasy game.

We’re providing plenty of UCL Fantasy coverage in preparation for the big kick-off, plus regular articles throughout the season.

Here, last year’s overall winner, Joaquín Roth (aka So VAR So Bad), shares his thoughts on chip strategy and reveals his Matchday 1 team.

After winning the 2024/25 UCL Fantasy overall title, I’m excited to share my first official team reveal on FFScout.

I usually play with a fairly balanced style at the beginning, trying to be aggressive on fixture targeting with a bit of risk-taking when it feels right.

Below, I’ll walk through my current draft, main strategy, and some of the doubts I still have before the Matchday (MD1) deadline.

Overall Strategy & Chip Plan

UCL team reveal chip strategy

My general plan for the group stage is to keep things flexible but also take advantage of the early rounds when fixtures are clearer and most big teams field their strongest XIs.

At the moment, I’m still weighing up three possible chip strategies with the Wildcard (WC) and Limitless (LL):

1. WC4 + LL6/7

Hi chaps - what do you think of this wildcard

    Vicario (Dubs)
    Senesi Lacroix Guehi (Tarko) (Esteve)
    Palmer Gakpo Semenyo Xavi (King)
    Haaland Pedro Gyokeres

I like it but I’d be waiting until GW7 and loading arsenal

Yeah everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face ….. or until Ollie Watkins starts the season like Jozy Altidore and your midfielders fall to bits (I haven’t had the best start)

Wouldn’t double up on Palace defence after this GW and would want Arsenal defensive cover too

Agree re Palace - thinking Newcastle or Sunderland defender instead.
Do you have a plan to get Isak in?

          You asking me?

I think I’m coming to the realisation that Gyokeres may be a better option that Isak for 1.5m less, on penalties and with less competition for his starting spot

Btw, for those planning BB8, don't forget (as I did) in case you have/wanna get Grealish he isn't gonna be eligible to play against his parent club. I've realised that last night and my BB plan's down the drain now lol.

I thought he looked very bright and the fixtures are better. I'd keep him over Gakpo just about. Everton and Palacec won't be easy games.

Do you think a gradual downgrade to Romero and Lacroix is the way to go or you would go further and have Guehi/Richards/VDV?

I own VDV alsi, just gushing if 4.5 or 5.0 is the better price point in defence.

Thinking of rolling FT this week and do a double transfer (Salah & Watkins --> Palmer & Haaland) next week, to triple captain Haaland. Alternative strategy is to upgrade Guiu this week (up to a 6.6 FWD) and play BB. What do you think? Team looks like this for GW5.

    Dúbravka
    Muñoz - Milenkovic - Porro - Diouf
    Salah (C) - Bruno - Semenyo - Rogers
    Watkins - Mateta

Bench: Sanchez - Dewsbury Hall - Estève - Guiu

feel like the waiting will be better long term

could just bb anyway and hope for 1pter, (because lets be honest thats all guiu was anyway)

Jpedro might be rested after bayern, boosting his minutes chance

Does this team need a WC ?
Shitty start for the season here

    Sels ( Dub )
Guehi Porro Diouf (Guddmnssn / DeCuyper)
    Salah Wirtz KDH Reijnders Kudus
    JP Watkins Gyokeres

    1 FT / 2.1 ITB

Was going to do Wirtz, Watkins >> King, Haaland with 2 FT before GW6

    Thoughts ?

UCL fantasy, any must haves or genius advice out there?

My three picks are Rodinei, olympiacos def with crazy attacking return last year, plays on the wing a lot, Richarlison, nicely rested and the only real option with tel not included in squad and solanke out, and Geovany Quenda, def but mostly plays on the wing, possibly the best gw1 fixture from anyone. His only competition, Catamo, is injured for at least md1, by which time you will probably sell him anyway before napoli.

Post yours below (or awkwardly leave it blank )haha

Keep an eye on any news regarding Rodinei, he missed last game due to injury and remains a doubt, though the most likely scenario is he will make it.

thx yeah i saw the benching and assumed it was rest, but the predictions do think he starts.
Will keep an eye on it
Crazy how cheap some players are
In fact, here is a squad of only starters, 4.0 defending players and 5.0 attacking players all actaully alright picks

        Suarez elyonoussi moro
        Vanaken Alikouche Saltnes Gloukh Berguis
Buongiorno Rodinei W. Anton Bellanova T.Araujo
        Meret Scherpen (or Jaros)

2 of these currently in my team, another 4 made the shortlist.

Budget really is no issue in this game, i have 3mil itb and no-one i want to upgrade!

Saltnes is out with illness, but would recommend him as best Glimt option when fit (I watch a lot of Norwegian football & play fantasy Eliteserien btw).

I'm not taking too many punts since there's quite a few underpriced options in defence (would add Zabarnyi/Chevalier to your list), but Can Uzun (Frankfurt mid) looks a fun punt at 5m, and for GW1 only I'm on Pedro Gonçalves for the Kairat fixture

Yes, i considered a guy called hogh up top after seeing his name a lot in elitesieren articles

Thx for the update about saltnes

For reference, the ones in my team are Rodinei and meret, with buongiorngo, Suarez, Bellnova and Anton shortlisted.

My main other punts are Geo Quenda, Gnabry, Mctominay, Richarlison and Pedro Gonclaves.

Upamecano and Porro are my medium ownership players
            the rest is pretty template

Høgh is back fit if you want a cheap forward for tonight. By far the best striker in Eliteserien (although the forward spots are so competitive in UCL...)

Glimt pricing is a bit off - Høgh should be 6m (or definitely more expensive than Hauge), Saltnes 5.5/6. Hauge should be 5m mid

Thanks, yeah just cant find room
He was in my team for about 3-4 days but rn i have Haaland Thuram Richarlison and cant drop any of them.

Tried playing elitesieren fpl once but lost track of it among my (no joke) 6 other fantasy games all running as well.

With the closing of my france and italy games, i have abandoned both nordic fpls and focus solely on ucfpl and fpl. I do a little sorare (f2p dont kill me) which actually worked out lucky as i have some cards worth about 150 euro despite no money invested. Not serious about that though.

I also would do the world cup/euro and yes the club wc embarrasingly.
But on the bright side i only have 2 major ones atm and am cutting down 🙂

Eliteserien and UCL are my favourites I think. Don't really enjoy FPL as much as I used to. Probably largely because there's no content creators (actually there's 1 I suppose) and much smaller player pool for Eliteserien so winning is a real possibility and I generally do a lot better than FPL. I also used to live in Norway. With UCL I like the shorter format so you can be more aggressive and also the need to do a bit more of your own research on multiple leagues.

I unfortunately have never been to norway so no norwegian does not help.

I sometimes play eredivisie fantasy, have to guess what some of the things mean haha its all in dutch and wont autotranslate my team failing terrible after they are all getting "blessure"s !!!!

Main reason to avoid the paris laads is that zab does not look nailed, and also just the really tough draw.
Joan garca should be mentioned also, but Can Uzun could be a great shout. Awful fixtures though

Yeah I'm still not sure about PSG - really underpriced, terrible fixtures (I'm looking to WC5/LL8 I think), but then they are very capable of CS even against teams like Bayern. At 4m Zab still could be a good enabler. Chevalier more nailed but it's a shame he doesn't rotate well with any of the good cheap backup options like Meret (plays all the same dates so can't sub them). At the moment I'm tinkering between Vicario/Meret/Zabarnyi or Meret/Zetterer/Porro

They play together once, but i will just have to go with sommer vs usg, meret vss psv will have to be benched

Depends really on zab starting, beraldo pacho marquinhos stiff competition

ON porro myself for attacking threat.

Read some greek news with the help of google translate
most seem to think he will make it, but one was saying he ought to be rotated.

Think i will take the risk, but if it doesnt pay off i have 15 good players

will probably sell him and quenda gw2 anyway, as you can only roll 1 transfer but i dont like cutting players based on 1 week.
Barring injuries, he is a one week punt.

My only piece of advice would be to include Raphina in your team. Last season he was epic for me, 14 games; 13 goals, 9 assists, 3 Player of the Match awards; 137 points.

I don't think 1GW is enough info to suggest he's "nailedish" or "first choice" yet. Martinelli got back late from Bolivia and that gave Arteta an opportunity to start Eze imo

Basing it more off how much they hyped eze whilst martinelli was not even 100% nailed before eze

    Looking at a GW6 WC…

    Raya dubravka
    Gabriel Rodon Senesi Romero Alderete
    Semenyo Ndiaye KDH Palmer Reijnders
    Haaland gyok Pedro
If I do WC in 6, It has to be either BB8 or BB9.. BB9 does look better but Chelsea have midweek ucl and a game vs Sunderland just 2 days after so I fear rotation there..
    Which week BB looks ideal?

Thoughts on the following plan for the next 3gws?

    (1FT)
    Sanchez Dubravka
    Munoz Andersen Rodon Williams Dorgu
    Salah Bruno Reijnders Semenyo Kudus
    Mateta Wood Watkins

    GW5: Roll FT
    GW6: Salah/Mateta —> Ndiaye/Haaland (free) - potential BB?
GW7: Wood —> Gyokores (free - exact funds)

Afraid price rises and drops could mess this up, should I make the gw6 transfer now? Or just downgrade Ndiaye if haaland rises before gw6?

    Last spot on wildcard -

    A. Grealish
    B. Gakpo

    Rest of playing attack is

    Palmer Semenyo
    Haaland Gyokeres Pedro

    Playing 4-3-3 with

    VVD Gab VDV Senesi

Then you have to go Gakpo.

Grealish sits out Gw8, although it is a month away and 6 and 7 could be good for him.

You already know the answer. It looks good but zero bench insurance so play out contingencies over the next few GWs to see if it works. Going a week early means you're committing to triple Arse v City, but you already knew that.

My team is very dodgy that week. Good one-off fixtures to target. Already have Gyokeres so 1 transfer in 8 for an Arsenal defender or Saka. Lines up well for my team.

Wildcard into Gw 7 or 8 for me.

The advantage of doing the wildcard into Gw8 is that you deal with a late flurry of injuries and strains and any South American travel returns etc.

Next season the Sept and October international break is being rolled into 1 over 3 weeks.

Summer signings Walter Benítez and Jaydee Canvot are set to make their first starts at Selhurst Park.

Ismaïla Sarr, Adam Wharton and Eddie Nketiah will miss out.

‘Nothing new from Saturday. All players who were available are still available. Nobody is returning. But it looks positive that Adam and Nketiah will return for the WHU game…’

‘We'll play our best team available, like always. But there will be a few changes. I can confirm that Walter Benítez and Jaydee Canvot will debut.

Some players need to rest from international duties and having many games.’

Who would you prioritise to shift from this lot? Or would a WC be worth considering? I'm happy with the rest of my team.

    d) Reijnders

I think if you go with haaland and no salah it does give you a lot of cash. I wasn't planning to get upgrade him but certainly an option for gw7 onwards.

    3. AAAFootball

Me, it's because i have cash to splash after selling palmer. I cant bear to sell rogers vs sunderland, and then semenyo ndaiye kudus untouchable for me, all served me well and i expect them to continue.
I have 3 good def, jped eki haaland fowards, feels silly to sell eki afte owning for 1 week, but want to buy a captain.

Riejnders is just the man left over

You don't necessarily have to use a FT on Reijnders this GW. Looks like you are playing 343, bench Reijnders and save FT

Was poor in GW2-4 and opposition not known for defensive strength. I think he's a cheap in to City but not proving value. Will keep him until I can free cash to upgrade if his attacking returns don't improve.

If he hadn’t pulled that shot just wide of the post people wouldn’t be considering it.

At that price you can’t expect a return every week but he does facilitate other pricer options.

Pardon me for the late reply. Busy & usually a slow typer.

So I came close to winning it last season. Was inside the top 1% , in fact, UEFA sent a badge via their fantasy site. Do you have any idea how it hurts? … revealing my team could jinx my luck this season you think?

My tip will be some players in my team since i’m a nice fella like the ladies think. I’ll recommend 7 players for you buddy 😆 he he

Kane, Olise/ Díaz, Gonçalves, Hakimi, Doan, Raphinha, Mbappe.

I’m usually aggressive early on so will likely stick to that approach by targeting teams & using chips early.
