The first Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline of 2026 is nearing – so it’s also time for the first Scout Picks of the calendar year.

As usual, we are limited by certain restrictions.

  • An £83.0m budget for our starting XI
  • An overall squad limit of £100.0m
  • No more than three players per team

GAMEWEEK 20 SCOUT PICKS

GOALKEEPER

FPL notes: Palmer's misses, 'OOP' Neto + Evanilson's first minutes 4

Bart Verbruggen (£4.5m) earns a place in the Scout Picks on account of Brighton and Hove Albion’s home meeting with Burnley. Not renowned for their impressive underlying defensive stats, Fabian Hurzeler’s side have nevertheless kept four clean sheets in 10 matches since the start of November. Verbruggen has also been racking up the save points of late, with seven to his name in as many outings, the most of any goalkeeper. Burnley, meanwhile, have scored just three times in their last three road trips.

DEFENDERS

FPL notes: Gabriel hauls, why Saliba was a sub + Livramento injury 3

Gabriel Magalhaes’ (£6.4m) aerial prowess could prove key at both ends of the pitch for Arsenal’s away encounter at Bournemouth. The Cherries have conceded 12 non-penalty goals from set-pieces this season, the joint-most of any team. They’ve also scored just one goal in their last three home matches. Arsenal are consequently one of the bookies’ favourites to keep a clean sheet in Gameweek 20, as below.

FPL Gameweek 20: Best clean sheet odds

James Tarkowski (£5.6m) hosts Brentford on the back of six clean sheets in nine matches. Keith Andrews’ side, who will have had two fewer days of rest, have struggled to find the net on their travels, too, scoring in only two of their last five away games. Additionally, Tarkowski has the edge over every other FPL defender except Marcos Senesi (£4.9m) when it comes to defensive contributions (DefCon), with an average of 10.89 DefCons per 90 minutes.

Suspended for the midweek trip to Arsenal, Matty Cash (£4.8m) looks set to return for Aston Villa’s home showdown with Nottingham Forest. The corner-taking right-back has three goals and one assist in 18 appearances this season. He’s joint-fifth for shots and joint-14th for chances created among all Fantasy defenders, too. As for Forest, only West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have fashioned fewer big chances than the Tricky Trees in 2025/26.

Keane is my 3rd defender. Others are Richards and Rodon who are both out.

    Worth doing either
    A) Richards > Konsa
    B) Rodon > Alederte (price swings)
    C) Keep

Just made the switch from richards to gabriel. for what its worth my back line is m nunes, andersen, timber, gabi and chalo (benched this week)

    Sell Rice or Saka?

Free up ARS spot for Gabriel

Saka felt a bit overpriced, and Rice felt like season keeper, but the unknown injury….

just about saka, like you say rice is a season keeper. would rather have over saka. but then i think the ideal triple arsenal is saka rice gabriel tbh. saka might be pricey but outside of bruno i dont see any other mid scoring as much as he will (well potentially if he goes back on pens)

    Wildcard draft:

    Vicario
    Nunes, Gabriel, Hall
    Bruno G, Cherki, Saka, Rogers
    Ekitike, Bowen, Haaland

    Dubravka, Garner, Mukiele, Gudmundsson

    2. F4L
      • 11 Years
      6 months, 17 days ago

      price yeah, points hmm maybe

      will saka + a defender
      outscore
      timber + a mid

he needs pens though thats for sure!

as well i think theres a debate about timber's goal threat. i mean hes still flying high from a single haul against leeds eons ago. i admit hes had chances since but its a question of whether he can keep/regain that goal scoring touch this season

rice and gabriel cant be beat, locked in

      1. Make FPL Casual Again
        • 7 Years

        Timber and Palmer/Bruno/Other

Timber doesn't necessarily need goals, few assists will do

      It's future points that count

I see the advantage of Rice across the season

But Saka, Gabriel and Timber may accumulate the most points moving forwards.

      Possibly someone like Trossard too.

      If not points per million.

      1. Make FPL Casual Again
        • 7 Years

Fair points but Palmer/Bruno/other needs to factored in as Saka alternatives, and Ars defence is by far the best defence and look like they're back having effectively kept a cs at home vs the leagues form team

Yeah, I dont think Villa double attack is proven/warranted at the moment. Agreed, he's a mins risk but scored 2 when he came on as a sub last time. As a villa fan, thinking he may have turned the corner and if regresses to season norms should have a great second half of the season.

Unless Rice should unexpectedly be passed fit before deadline, I'm looking at he following choices for this gw:

    A) KDH -> Garner -4 pts
    B) Rice -> Rogers -4 pts
    C) hold and play Guéhi against Newcastle for an expected 1 or 2 points

Problem with both A and B is that I'll probably want them back, as I think their return is not far off. Problem with C is I won't have a playing bench if e.g. the likes og O'Reilly or Foden doesnæt start.

A doesn't feel like a move worth a hit. B potentially ok. You could see C as 5-6 points if it avoids a hit, but yeah I wouldn't rate chances of more.

    Haaland, Bowen, DCL

    a) Gordon, Cash
    b) Mitoma, Chalobah
    c) Doku, M.Nunes

Could also go with 1 ars def only and get Rice/Trossard in mid

I am pretty fed up with O'Reilly, but I still would like to have a Man City defender. Who would you choose out of Gvardiol or Nunes?

I’d rather hire Stubbs than O’Reilly!

      I like Nunes, cheaper.
