Leeds United have completed the signing of James Trafford (£5.0m) from Manchester City in a deal worth up to £45m.

The move sees Daniel Farke land his new first-choice goalkeeper, with the England international arriving after making 17 appearances for Manchester City last season and playing a key role in their domestic cup success.

From an FPL perspective, however, Trafford’s arrival raises an interesting question.

Now expected to start every week, the 23-year-old finally looks like a viable Fantasy asset. Yet, at £5.0m, he enters one of the most competitive goalkeeper price brackets in the game. With several proven £4.5m options also available, can Trafford justify the extra investment?

A GUARANTEED STARTER

Trafford’s move should remove any doubts over his minutes.

Leeds have invested a club-record fee to bring him to Elland Road, with the deal worth an initial £22.5m and potentially rising to £45m through add-ons.

The Whites needed a new number one after both Illan Meslier (£4.0m) and Karl Darlow (£4.0m) departed this summer.

While Lucas Perri (£4.5m) remains at the club, Trafford arrives as the clear first-choice option.

TRAFFORD’S LEAGUE HISTORY

Although Trafford has only made 32 Premier League appearances, his Championship campaign with Burnley highlighted why Leeds were prepared to spend so heavily.

He started 45 league matches as Burnley earned promotion, conceding only 16 goals while keeping 29 clean sheets. His 84.5% save percentage ranked among the best in the division, while his performances earned widespread praise from Scott Parker.

On paper, and given the minutes, Trafford possesses the ability to become an excellent Premier League goalkeeper.

The bigger question is whether Leeds can provide the defensive platform needed for consistent FPL returns – as Burnley didn’t in 2023/24.

LEEDS’ DEFENSIVE STATS

Leeds’ defensive numbers from last season were mixed.

On the one hand, they ranked among the bottom six Premier League sides for goals conceded and clean sheets. Those figures alone hardly inspire confidence.

However, some of the underlying data was more encouraging.

Leeds finished among the league’s best five teams for limiting big chances, for example.

Could Trafford improve the defence simply through stronger shot-stopping, too?

Darlow and Perri both let in more league goals than Opta deemed they should have last season. Trafford was in the black, however. While there’s a small sample in Trafford’s case, Man City’s then cup goalkeeper also boasted a positive xGP figure in the FA Cup and EFL Cup, too.

Trafford’s heralded passing ability is reflected well in the above graphic, albeit from a small sample. More of a ‘modern-day’ goalkeeper, he’s half-decent at sweeper-keeping, too.

FIXTURES DON’T HELP?

The initial schedule perhaps works against Trafford, although it depends on how far your lookahead is.

Even those first five Gameweeks aren’t outstanding from a clean sheet perspective, as the below graphic shows. Leeds don’t meet a newly promoted side till Gameweek 12.

While defenders with DefCon potential are less fixture-dependent, managers investing £5.0m in a goalkeeper generally want a favourable schedule from the outset. Leeds don’t appear to offer that.

THE £4.5M COMPETITION

Perhaps Trafford’s biggest problem isn’t Leeds; it’s cheaper goalkeepers

For £0.5m less, you’ve got Bart Verbruggen (£4.5m) and Djordje Petrović (£4.5m), who both hit double figures for clean sheets in 2025/26. Both Verbruggen and Bernd Leno (£4.5m) are ahead of Leeds’ starting ‘keeper in the Rate My Team projections from Gameweeks 1-11.

Antonín Kinský (£4.5m) has also been confirmed as Tottenham Hotspur’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Saving £0.5m may not sound significant, but it can often be the difference between upgrading an outfield player elsewhere in your squad.

THE £5.0M BATTLE

Trafford also enters a competitive £5.0m bracket.

Senne Lammens (£5.0m) currently ranks among the highest projected-scoring goalkeepers thanks to Manchester United’s encouraging opening fixtures.

Caoimhín Kelleher (£5.0m) remains attractive after finishing as last season’s second-highest scoring goalkeeper.

Elsewhere, Dean Henderson (£5.0m), Robin Roefs (£5.0m) and Emiliano Martínez (£5.0m) all provide further competition.

Compared with those options, Trafford arguably has more to prove.

VERDICT

Trafford’s move to Leeds certainly puts him on the FPL radar. Guaranteed minutes are always valuable, and few will question his ability after an outstanding 2024/25 campaign with Burnley. Leeds have also invested heavily to make him their new number one, so there is little doubt he’ll start when fit.

The issue is whether he represents the best value in Fantasy. Verbruggen, Kinský, Petrović and Leno all come in cheaper, while offering the potential for similar, if not greater, returns. That extra £0.5m can make a significant difference elsewhere in an FPL squad.

Competition is just as strong within his own price bracket. Lammens and Kelleher are projected to score better in the first few months, and Leeds begin the season with one of the tougher fixture runs in the division.

At the moment, there are simply too many other goalkeepers who look capable of offering better value.

And even when Leeds’ fixtures do improve, you’ve got a potential DefCon beast like Tarik Muharemović (£5.0m), who is identically priced and who can offer regular supplementary extras that Trafford may not be able to.
