As we count down to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 1 deadline, we’re welcoming back our team of guest contributors for 2025/26.

This time, we hear from former FPL champion Simon March, who talks us through his own team.

As German philosopher and committed FPL manager Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “If you gaze long into FPL, FPL also gazes into you.”

More than ever, FPL is asking us what kind of manager we are, and I don’t mean ‘good’ or ‘bad’ but strategically, philosophically and psychologically. Never have the options to play the game ‘your way’ been greater. In the modern iteration of FPL, it is not unreasonable to question whether we all are, in fact, still actually playing the same game any more.

The introduction of defensive contribution (‘DefCon’) points has changed FPL in ways that we are still processing. A new source of points and their predictability relative to other sources of points has not only widened the pool of viable players but, in doing so, also the strategic options available to us.

Of course, within the FPL community in particular, our teams will likely resemble each other’s. That’s partly a result of human nature, partly a result of the World Cup artificially narrowing the available player options, and I’ll save you the suspense and let you know now that you probably won’t find all that many surprises in my current squad either.

But, I have a feeling that where we all go from here could be very different.

Two Paths Diverged

Buy, keep, sell? Transfer trends ahead of Gameweek 13 1

Ultimately, what type of FPL manager you are depends a great deal on your preferred reward types and risk tolerances. Are you the type of manager who likes to chase big hauls, knowing that this will likely necessitate a more dynamic, transfer-centric playing style and boom-or-bust returns, or are you the type of manager who is content with a drip-feed of smaller but more consistent returns?

Naturally, managers can mix strategies but they say that a big part of success is knowing what you’re optimising towards and, ultimately, we will all have to answer that question. We can try to ride the beast or we can try to tame the beast, but we can’t do both.

Chasing big hauls will, almost certainly, offer a higher points ceiling than pursuing consistent returns. Some bright spark will time their moves perfectly, switching from one red-hot player to another, hitting their hauls and avoiding their blanks and, in all likelihood, that person will win FPL.

The rest of us will jump on a form player right before he begins to blank and then sell him immediately before he starts scoring again, all so that we can repeat that process with another player. Anyone who owned Morgan Rogers (£7.5m) (then of Aston Villa, now of Chelsea) last season will likely know what I’m talking about here.

It is for this reason that I’m drawn this season to the other path because, psychologically, I know I can remain more patient with an ‘Elliot Anderson-type’ (£6.5m) player scoring 4-5 points each week than I can a player who blanks for 4-5 Gameweeks and then hauls. Banking free transfers and making more complex multi-transfer moves have become a bigger part of the game now that we can stack five of them. I think this method is more conducive to achieving that.

What I miss in big hauls, I hope I can offset by more regular, moderate scores and through the greater flexibility that more available transfers will give me. That is the plan, anyway.

My Current Squad

On to the team, I’ll quickly mention from the outset that this draft keeps £0.5m in the bank. I’m not bragging, I just don’t know where to spend it right now.

Goalkeeper

FPL Gameweek 11 Scout Picks: Arsenal triple-up

If there’s value in certainty, Arsenal’s David Raya (£6.0m) offers plenty of that. He’s a nailed-on route into the best defence in the league and, while there will be better value goalkeepers out there, picking the right one(s) is a whole different challenge.

Defenders

Imo if you have Haaland in your squad at 15.5 you will surely be handing him the armband every week. Save the cash and go with Mbeumo.

Thanks, I liked the no Haaland draft for days, but since today I have been leaning back towards having him and looking at moving to A. I'm not convinced by the City defence though but the upside for O'Reilly could be massive especially if he's playing in midfield

    So any City experts here.
With a Doku injury who benefits minutes wise?
How would you see the 3 behind Haaland line up if Doku is not there?
Does it help both Cherki and Foden minutes.
Can Cherki goes wide and if so Foden would be more nailed in the 10?

I don’t get the Raya pick personally unless you plan on holding out on WC longer term. If plannin to WC 4/5/6 you can get White, Calafiori, and Mosquera for .5 cheaper that have potential for defcons and attacking returns (Mosquera less so)

Every Arsenal defender apart from Gabriel has problems. Raya saves you from all that hassle long term.

But his ceiling is 6pts. At least one can hope for attacking returns or defcons from the defenders. And some cheaper goalkeepers should get more save points

        1. Beto Hall Tzol
          • 9 Years
          3 hours, 22 mins ago

But if you don’t plan early WC then best source of reliable 6pts (aside of £8m Gabriel) is Raya. Plus, Mosquera is more Saliba-style def - lower DC / attack returns. That leaves injury/rotation risk fullbacks. I’m punting on Calafiori, but I get the Raya logic.

Ceiling is not 6. He’s capable of a few saves or even bonus. Don’t happen super often, but did happen last year a few times. Also his ppm is a long way ahead of other GKs, which is by far the most important thing given you don’t swap your GKs around often. You don’t chase Harris with

    Currently on this, no Bruno

    Lammens - Verbruggen
    White - Maguire - Ballard - Vuskovic - Ajer
    Mbeumo - Rogers - Odegaard - Tzolis - Schade
    Haaland - Thiago - Pedro

I joined the knee jerk changes after community shield brigade to bring in Cala and get on the Tzolis bandwagon but think they’ve made me happier with my squad and I’m now close to pens down on this - backing Arsenal and the 3 premiums initially. What do you think?

    Verbruggen (Dovin)
    Gabriel Calafiori Hume (Kayode Thomas)
    Fernandes Szob Tzolis Sarr GroB
    Haaland Pedro (Kusi-A)

Would like Mbeumo and Thiago, and probably Semenyo in time but you can’t have them all

Yeah if Gomez is fit hoping to use him in 3 as well. Or would you even consider Davis over O’Nien just for GW1
So with Gomez at Che in 2 I would play VanEwijk
Then in GW3 let Gomez play
And 2FT for Pedro and Bruno to
        Isak and Semenyo
WC Pedro back in on WC4

        1. Tripswich

I would love to not use it.
There are some paths that might work like leaving Pedro in 3 and going without Isak.
Would help avoid hits for say Rogers in for 4. But soon players like Wissa Sarr might be needed too and I can see the transfers adding up without a WC. Definitely open to not doing the WC if possible. The way I play I would never get to 5 FT anyway. Think I maxed out at 3 and take about 20 hits a year. Probably why I never got a 10k. Need more patience but a gambler at heart !!

Regardless of when tou play it , at least for a non-DGW as is the case for the first BB, the clue is to not destroy your team structure going forward just to gain a few extra pointS. And that is easy to set up in GW1

        1. Tripswich

Lack of a playing 4.0 keeper this year.
When people play WC they can max out on the 11 and go cheaper on the bench rather than spreading funds if the BB was used in 1 or 2
Considered to worth about 10 points so the attitude is get rid of it.

If either Haaland or Bruno get injured, those who’ve saved a BB will use it way more effectively later on.

Lots won’t have 1 of them after GW3 injury or not.
Early GW3 or GW4 will have to spread funds and still cover city Che Ars pool CP Fulham and Everton. That should yield a nice BB, but I just haven’t seen the perfect week yet.
6 would be nice - it might even help against city and pool ownership that week but I might FH instead in 6 if I have too many pool and city

It’s because it’s really nice to be able to WC out of a BB, especially in a year where a 4.0 playing keeper looks much more unlikely than previous seasons. You don’t want to be stuck with lots of money on the bench all season, but you don’t want to waste transfers ditching all your bench players to fodder

My mindset is a bit odd when it comes to things like fpl, I think deep down I know pretty much the best team you can possibly have and recognise it when I see it.

But I then veer away from it trying to be different haha

In isolation, is it worth upgrading Kinky to Lamment? I take it from pre- season articles that Kinsky has played well, but do we expect Sours to tighten up at the back compared to previous lacklustre season?

Spurs have definitely upgraded defenders in front of GK now - similar clean sheet odds to MU I’d guess over time. MU have the initial fixtures tho. Have picked Maguire and Kinsky fwiw.

Probably not? Kinsky likely best value keeper in the game. Lanes probably best 5.0 though and had more points potential over the first five I think

    De Cuyper - 84 points from 17 games / 1404 minutes.

If (admittedly a big if) he ends up nailed you are looking at a 4.5m defender getting 160 points or more.

Gonna start the season and hes OOP. Im in from the start.

    RMT please.

    Going to BB gameweek 1

    Kinsky Verbruggan
    Mosquera Calafiori Maguire Robertson Hume
    B. Fernandes Mbeumo Semenyo Tzolis Szoboszloi
    Isak DCL Pedro

Obviously the big thing is no Haaland but I think I have decent captain options without him for the first few weeks. At his price he'll need to score 10 points a gameweek to justify his price imo. I'm happy to go against the grain for a few weeks and I can alway early wildcard if going disasterly.

Mbeumo has more competition than just Sesko. He has Cunha and Ahmad competition too.

He will probably start against Hull, but then come off around the 70-minute mark.

He can also play 2 positions which helps. He is first choice but all the best players competing in multiple competitions will likely get 75mins subs etc

Yeah, that's why I am having doubts about getting him. I want mids who play the full 90 for that price. Semenyo should play the full 90 now that Doku is out.

Yeah I don't expect Mbeumo to get 90 minutes often but I'd expect him to start the first few games. I think he's Man Utds second best attacking option after Bruno and their fixtures are so good.
