Tom Hadley – a one-time world number one in FPL – is one of our regular contributors who has returned for 2026/27.

He’ll again be providing data-driven articles regularly this season, chiefly around defensive contribution points (DefCon).

We’re just two weeks into the new season, so samples are small, but it’s worth a quick look into the data to see if there are any lessons to learn.

Here, I’ll be drawing on the data in Fantasy Football Scout’s all-new ‘DefCon’ page, which is just one small part of the excellent FPL Toolkit you can find here.

DEFCON LEADERS: THE DEFENDERS

DefCon stars

Above: The four defenders who have hit DefCons in both Gameweeks so far

HULL CITY

DefCon stars

Newly promoted sides often start the season with a bit of momentum, but I don’t think anyone would have predicted Hull to be quite as solid as they have been.

From an FPL perspective, it’s almost too good to be true. A defence full of £4.0m assets, keeping two clean sheets in two, and John Egan (£4.0m) hitting 17 DefCon actions per 90 minutes.

Now, it’s unlikely that this incredible value is sustainable, but even if the clean sheets start to fall by the wayside, which they will, DefCons seem likely to keep happening. The way that Hull play almost invites the opposition to test their extremely physical back three, and they seem more than happy just to clear it and make themselves difficult to break down.

Whilst Egan is the standout, all three centre-backs have both DefCon merit and attacking potential. Nobel Mendy (£4.0m) was just one contribution away from also having a 100% hit rate, and he would have almost definitely achieved it if it wasn’t for an early sub in Gameweek 2.

I expect Hull to drop off but we saw with Sunderland last season that sometimes these big physical teams just continue to tick along in the league, along with their assets in FPL. Remember that the Black Cats came up from the play-offs with low expectations in 2024/25, as Hull did last year, and the Tigers are mimicking the Mackems with some heavy spending in their first transfer market as a Premier League club. All the iffy xGC data from 2025/26 can be taken with a pinch of salt now that the squad has been overhauled.

Even if you don’t intend to play them that often, it’s brilliant to have that consistent 3-4 point floor on the bench as perfect back-up.

LEWIS HALL

The next name of interest is Lewis Hall (£5.1m). He isn’t your typical DefCon pick; that’s not the primary reason you buy him. He’s been taking set pieces, gets into great attacking positions, and has excellent baseline bonus.

But when you factor all the reasons you would buy him, and then add the chance of DefCons in there, too, it’s just about as good as you could ask for for £5.1m. The cherry on the cake is the excellent run of fixtures to come:

The DefCon hits aren’t even too much of a surprise, either. Hall was one of the best full-backs for defensive contributions last season:

DefCon stars

Above: The leading full-backs for DefCon points last season, with Hall banking them in 25% of his starts

Reckon I’m close to WC, currently here:

    Raya 4.0
    Calafiori Konsa Hall Ajayi XXX
    Palmer MGW Sangare XXX XXX
    Haaland JP Wissa

The 3 missing positions could be:
    1. Cherki, Gross, Gvardiol
    2. Szoboszlai, Anderson, Gvardiol
    3. Cherki, Anderson, Muhar

I do want Szob but I feel Cherki could have a massive game this week and I’d probably see it as one game before moving to Rogers. Anderson could face competition as well for minutes and whilst I like Gross I think that haul at the weekend was a bit of a fluke and he could be rotated as well.

Raya & MGW probably the only other 2 that I might move on.

    Thoughts on 1 v 2 v 3 (v another option?)

Do you think Egan may be a better option than Ajayi? I've got Ajayi on wc also and caught the price rise but considering switching as defcon stats for Egan have been impressive.

Out of the three options I'd probably go 1. But i think you might regret not having Bruno

Too many compromises elsewhere to get Bruno, Haaland and Palmer and I’m prioritising the last 2. May well regret it but he’s not going to get 4 returns every week and I’m happy with the captaincy rotation between Haaland and Palmer.

I'd swap Hall for Luka Vušković. Oh yeah, scrap that, get Gvard.

      Why no pool v ipswich?

No Liverpool because you can’t have them all and I’m hoping to hold transfers (other than Rogers in next week). Szob still under consideration.

Hadn’t really thought about Egan, Ajayi’s only there to catch the price rise so could easily swap him out.

As a Chelsea supporter I'd be happy with a draw - could even be 2-2.

Alas, my heart tells me it'll be 1-0 Arsenal. Thus remove Chelsea players I think. I'm playing Raya on a WC though (but JP, Cala + Konsa on bench just in case JP/Palmer find a way through)

I think he will be integrated slowly assuming Mosquera is fit. I'm looking to bring him in as soon as he's starting but think that is still 2/3 games away.

I could be totally wrong though.

Arteta said Mosq. is fit, however who can trust that guy.

Nevertheless, even if Konsa started, he will never be certain player due to White ability off the ball on inversion. It will be more of a shuffle... If someone like Zubi is playing, you do not need White to step in. If not, then you need it.

So whether Mosq is fit or not, you are also asking, is White perhaps more suited for current opponnent or not?

but ofc we would all love 4,4 ARS def

I dropped 3 MILLION places going without Bruno.

Just WCed - I still got no Bruno. Doubt he'll do the same damage v next 10 teams. FH for him v Hull.

But this is FF. It may all change come the weekend.

I'm going all out differential (carefully chosen differential) to claw my way back up, and WITHOUT Bruno. I pray.

It's really strange. Last season Bruno was returning against basically every team, he was totally fixture proof.

People seem to have forgotten that because he isn't "captainable" over the next 5 or 6 - they are also bouyed by 'no-Haaland' strategy 'paying off' over the first 2 GWs, and prefer Palmer to score more over the next 6 weeks.

However, most of them have similar points to those who went with Haaland, and are about to use their WC when those with Haaland will keep it. So not sure how much it's actually paid off. And fitting Bruno back in if he goes on a crazy run will be difficult.

But most of them understand these risks (I hope!).

Isn't it just safer to go with all three of haaland palmer and bruno? It means only 1 arsenal defender though but because of defcons it shouldn't hurt too much

Yeah I want to get rid of Kinsky (my only playing keeper) but have Brobbey and Tzolis to deal with first!

Unless I take a hit or gamble on Tzolis starting then Kinsky has to stay at least one more GW.

Bottomed on last page. Sorry to repeat myself.

I'm leaning towards a De Cuyper and Verbruggen double up on wildcard. Id potentially swap De Cuyper to Konsa once he starts getring regular minutes, so could only be short term. Is it a mistake?

I can't fit everyone else in unless I habe 2 x 4.0 bench defenders, annoyingly.

Well, I could if I swapped Hall for Dedic but I like the look of Hall.

        Current draft:

        Veebruggen (Steele)
Calafiori, De Cuyper, Hall (Egan, Diop)

He got a YC, committed another foul after - next foul would have seen him sent off. So Arteta did owners a favour lol.

He also had a stinker - Cash completely dominated him. But I think he will start against Chelsea. The Blues are not a low block team so Arteta will want pace in transition - however it's very unlikely he will play 90. Between 60 - 75 is my guess.

      IMO keep Mbeumo.

First of all, MUN should get better the more open space they will have to exploit. HUL low block negated their qualities.
Second of all, Mbeumo e.g. earned more xG than Bruno in that great performance last time. Do you think he is out of the chances for some reason?

Lastly your alternatives are not interesting enough, at least given fixture list for the swap.

Tbf didn’t expect him to start against Arsenal, so unless you’re Emery I don’t think anyone can say for certain whether he will start

Think he’ll start but no shot on target in two games for the whole team, against a solid hull side….

      1. Club-De-Belon
        • 5 Years
        19 days, 10 hours ago

I mean, I still expect him to start even now, after seeing him in pre-season.

I think he is either one year of temp subs or of full loan, to become a starter in the league.

Well, they did not send him for loan, and new singings for Emery usually do not start straight away. He micromanages their play a lot.

So I think I could get a week or two out of him, before selling.

But I need someone who pays attention to the club to say, how they see it. Maybe someone with more experience will jump in now.

TBH Hull is not solid because of 2 matches.

MUN are not a team to break through low blocks, they are more suited to equal or stronger oppositions.

and draw against Coventry that was making people fall asleep and seemed like clear 0:0...

        I don't trust them yet

If on a wildcard, the Bri-New rotation (Thiaw/Vuskovic for defcons) works really well for a long time. Moreover, both are playable this week as well, if you want to hide your Chelsea assets on the bench.

Sunderland and Newcastle defenders a better rotation for all Home games.

      I might do that soon.

What do we think are the chances of Ndiaye starting?

Really didn't want to do any transfers this week, but looks like I'll have to...

Worth a punt on Schade over Sangare? Has looked in great form and can be explosive.

      Gvardiol not nailed, now.

      But he may be safer.

I have too, to add to the Man City conundrum!

      Probably Gakpo for one week.

But it can go either way.

Is it crazy to have Cherki and MGW on a wildcard this week and plan to move to Bruno and slater next week (with Slater being bench fodder)?

Would leave me with a front 8 of:

    Bruno Palmer Szobozlai Sangare Slater
    Haaland Pedro Wissa

I would want Bruno vs Everton, not for the Derby. Check my team below though.

With Ndiaye and Aina in my starting 11...

And bench cover of Tzolis, Mitchell and Mukiele.

I could take a minus 4 to bring in Munoz and MGW, but that would involve losing Semenyo at home to Coventry.

Do you think I should roll in with the FH crowd?

I'll then have 2 FT to sort a few positions out next week.

      Tzolis might still play?
Not sure what the rest of your team is like but could you switch Tzolis for a player with a good fixture, and save the FH and extra transfer?

        It's an idea

Ndiaye is more of an issue though, but I could roll with him too.

Pep wanted smaller squads by the end.

Enzo Maresca ideally wants two for every position, the traditional approach to the squad. The problem with the quality is obvious for FPL picks.

Will he have favourites for a league side? Or is the Champions League the real priority for him?

It was always the league title for Pep as the main competition, week in, week out.

    RMWCT 0.0 mitb

    Verbruggen / 4.0
Calafiori, Konsa, Gvardiol, Hall, de Cuyper,
    Szobo, MGW, Palmer, Cherki, Sangare
    HPW-trinity

Cherki to Rogers next week as the planned transfer. I am not sure MGW is worth the money. I could either downgrade MGW to Rogers or someone cheaper and upgrade Gvardiol to O'Reilly. However Mgw to 6.0 frees up "only" 1.9 million and many permutations with Saka or even Bruno cause me issues worth 0.1 million. (I should have bought Cherki before his 1st price rise.)

I don't know if I'd double Brighton defence (I have that currently and regretting Verbruggen.) De Cuyper may not hang on to that attacking slot indefinitely, either. otherwise it looks eminently sensible if somewhat template.

Pretty much identical to me, except I've got 1m in the bank and Egan rather than Hall.

I luckily had Cherki before the rise so selling MGW gives me that round £m.

One of the others might double rise before the week is out though so you might be able to get that extra 0.1

Do you think that Gvardiol starts are secure?

MGW is definitely worth it, imo.

Weighing up two options. A free hit (captain Haaland, obvs), which should leave me able to roll a transfer next week and then have 3 to play with the week after… or take a 4 point hit this week to TC Haaland.

    Lammens, Verbruggen
Gabriel, Van Hecke, L.Davis, Muharemovic, Vuskovic
    Rogers, Foden, Bruno, Gomez, Tzolis
    J.Pedro, DCL, Isak

    The hit would be Gabriel->Dedic, Mbuemo->Gomez, Isak->Haaland.

Leaning FH at present. That was the original plan, but the TC is tempting.

Are Man City gonna be gelled enough in 3 days training for a Haaland TC?

I don't mind an early FH tbf.
