With FPL Gameweek 3 just a day away, it’s time to see how one of our top managers is approaching the next round.

This time, we hear from Hall of Famer Dan Wright, who talks us through his squad, planned transfers and the key decisions ahead of the Gameweek 3 deadline.

Despite only starting playing FPL in 2012/13, Dan has 10 finishes inside the top 50k, of which five were inside the top 10k.

Gameweek 2 went very well, as captain Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) helped propel me to a score of 130 points. Of those, 18 came from my Bench Boost, which is roughly what I hoped the chip would deliver.

It's really hard to call, because it's not just two great teams in good form, it's also a team that have scored freelybut been loose at the back and one that have kept it super tight but been less exuberant in attack.

With Arsenal at home, I don't think they're going to change strategy, and Chelsea may decide they need to rein in the excesses. Which could mean a low-scoring game, probably favouring Arsenal. But early goals for either side could open the game up.

      1. GoonerSteve

On WC. I am on b currently. I think it is still a game too early for Konsa, and I expect Chelsea to score. Will likely move De Cuyper to him next week if he starts.

    4. BR510

      B with Konsa

      1. GoonerSteve
        1 month, 17 days ago

I fancy Chelsea to score this week and I want to make sure Konsa is starting before I get him in. I will likely switch De Cuyper to him next week.

I've got Calafiori already so if Arsenal keep Chelsea out I get some points anyway. Doubling up this week seems risky to me.

Wildcard team A or B? A is nice but really wanted MGW as I like the Forest fixtures. Yet to play BB hence an option with 2 playing GKs:

    A
    Verbs
    De Cuyper - O’Reilly - Hall - Califiori
    Cherki - Grob - Szoboszlai - Palmer
    Haaland - Wissa
    (Raya) (Joao Pedro) (Konsa) (Slater)

    B
    Verbs
De Cuyper - Guehi - Hall
    Cherki - Grob - Szoboszlai - Palmer - MGW
    Haaland - Wissa
    (Petrovic) (Joao Pedro) (Konsa) (Ajay)

    Start two:
    A: DCL
    B: Pedro
    C: Hume
    D: Tzolis
DCL seems like the obvious choice, but have Verbruggen in goal and not starting Kinsky for all the money in the world. Pedro doesn't feel appealing either with double Arsenal defence, so Hume, really? Tzolis seem okay for now, even though monday was a horrorshow. What do you think?

Arsenal aren't going to keep a clean sheet every game, so I think you play Pedro.

I'm currently thinking of playing Tzolis with him. He was looking so sharp GW1 and in the Community Shield. Pretty sure he's still first choice LW. Chelsea have conceded 5 in the first two and hopefully that gives him the chance to prove himself after GW2.

Have reverted to the CHE pair as opposed to going with Isak & Barcola on WC3.

    Verbruggen
    Gvardiol, De Cuyper, Calafiori
    Cherki, BrunoF, Palmer, Gomez

Is it necessary to play FH? Only reason is to get Haaland in for me, as I’m quite happy with the rest of my team.

I could do Bruno Mbeumo Brobbey —> Haaland Sangare 4.5 for -4. Might be worth over playing the FH?
The team would in that case be:

    Lammens (Pickford)
    Calafiori NOR Jacquet (White Ballard)
    Semenyo Wirtz Sangare (Tzolis 4.5)
    Haaland JP DCL

So, worth -4 to get Haaland in or just play FH? I could play the TC on Haaland to justify it.

**sorry, play Tzolis most likely as well

      1. Mr Turnip 1
        1 month, 17 days ago

        I see the vision.

You would be buying two great players, and you would have double Liverpool plus triple City.

I guess you would also be selling two great players though, for a hit as well. Will you want Bruno/Mbeumo further down the line?

How much do you rate TC over picking up Brentford, maybe better City picks, plus also perhaps another Liverpool and a De Cuyper for example?

Do you want the FH for later, or is this the best week to use it? Especially there will likely be other weeks for TC, it doesn’t take much planning as chips go

Not all answers, but hopefully some helpful questions to help you make your mind up

Hi gents, after some careful consideration I think I’m best FH’ing this GW, just looking for a few more opinions.

    Verbruggen
    Maguire - Muharemovic - Calafiori
    Tzolis - Bruno - Mbuemo - Elanga
    DCL - Haaland - J.Pedro

    Kinsky: Ballard: Gomez: OShea

Got 2 Leeds and 2 Brighton playing against each other
Only one City player in Haaland

The FH team put together I’ve made is much more solid I feel

    Much appreciated

    1. Ze_Austin
      1 month, 17 days ago

Players still get points against each other. Your defenders have more routes to points than clean sheets

Mbeumo to Cherki and TC Haaland, imo

      1. RICICLE
        1 month, 17 days ago

Cheers Austin! Very true, I just feel with the FH I can really attack those Liverpool City and Brentford fixtures, I actually do even feel more comfortable Triple capping Haaland against Ipswich

        1. Mr Turnip 1
          1 month, 17 days ago

To be fair, if you want to do it vs Ipswich then FH3 isn’t awful. I’m doing it myself and there are a bunch of players with nice fixtures I want to target, but I don’t have Haaland. I guess in GW7 Haaland may be injured/rested, but if he plays that game then yh it might be a better opportunity, I guess the other thing is Haaland usually starting fast, plus also grabbing what’s in front of you while you know for sure it’s there

          1. RICICLE
            1 month, 17 days ago

Completely agree, gut feeling is Coventry will not roll over for Haaland, but rather make way for Cherki and Foden to fill in, but while the fixtures are there like you say it’s only natural to want to take advantage of what can be on offer

    2. Mr Turnip 1
      1 month, 17 days ago

In your case, you already own Haaland. One of your Arsenal players is an attacker which is no bother against a Chelsea team who have conceded five in two to worse attacks than Arsenal’s. The other is a defender who almost plays like and attacker, plus Arsenal still have the third best CS odds this week. Pedro is more of a concern, but you can potentially bench him. I’d have no concerns playing Utd against an Everton defence which are giving up plenty of chances. Newcastle slightly more unknown imo but they’ll be decent.

I think the opportunity to TC Haaland is worth more to you than FH. I’d bring in another City player and TC, then potentially FH4 if you fancy it to get triple Chelsea attack and avoid the Manchester derby, or even WC4 if you prefer.

How about downgrade Ballard, go Tzolis to Foden, TC, and consider benching Pedro for Gomez?

      1. RICICLE
        1 month, 17 days ago

Cheers bud! Some great points raised there, I just feel this Arsenal and Chelsea game will be quite cagey, I’d still intend to keep Bruno on the FH though, and like I say above I actually feel the TC on Haaland against Ipswich may be more attractive.
I think WC’ing in GW4 is more optimal too.
I don’t think I could benchb Pedro for Gomez, I feel like I’m just answering my own narrative haha!!

        1. Mr Turnip 1
          1 month, 17 days ago

You’re probably right about the game being cagey. Arteta is usually pragmatic against other big six sides.

Bruno isn’t on my FH because he takes up a lot of budget for a player I won’t captain.

I think FH3 is valid if you want to go for it! Sometimes these forums are most helpful for clarifying what you think rather than changing your mind haha

          1. RICICLE
            1 month, 17 days ago

So true about the clarification, as it’s often better to gain insight on what you intend to do and follow through with 😉
If I didn’t go Bruno on FH then it’d allow me to include the likes of Van Dijk and Thiago, that’d be the only thing I’m mulling over still, like ya say I’ll not be captaining Bruno anyhow.

    2 FT, would you do:

    Tzolis -> Foden
Mbeumo -> Rogers (to fund it - exact cash)

    This week?

A feels like dropping a risky player to a good player with an amazing fixture and B feels like dropping a great player with a good fixture to another good player with the worst possible fixture in the season

      So A

Is it stupid to FH3 and WC4?

    1. Mr Turnip 1

Nah not at all tbh, I think it’s a perfectly reasonable way to navigate wanting Arsenal and Utd at the start, triple City in 3, triple Chelsea in 4. There’s a lot of fixture hokey-cokey atm and I think it’s reasonable to take advantage of it

Is the strategy I’m currently strongly considering

    Have 2FT

    1) Play Ødegaard and Sangare (bench Ndiaye)
    2) Ødegaard and Ndiaye -> Foden and Gross (bench Sangare)

Maybe 1 unless Ndiaye is going to drop before the deadline

C, I do not rate the Utd defence at all. That feels like a huge upgrade.

A would be my next choice, followed by D then B

    Team gtg and bench order?

    Tzolakis
    Muharemovic, Ajer, Hall
    Bruno F, Palmer, Cherki, Sangare
    Haaland, Wissa, JP

    Dubravka, Gomez, Konsa, Ajayi

    1. Mr Turnip 1
      1 month, 17 days ago

Tzolakis is bold… I wouldn’t transfer him out unless on WC tho.

I’d consider starting Gomez over JP, double Chelsea attack doesn’t feel amazing vs Arsenal away, the hardest attacking fixture in the whole season. There’s an argument for benching both for Gomez and Konsa tbh…

      Otherwise gtg

Other 4.5m keeper option other than Tzolakis?

JP is on form and scoring so if Arsenal was to concede it’ll be him on the score sheet but understand where you’re coming from

Verbruggen probably best 4.5 keeper, or maybe Kinsky eventually but most people probably won’t like me saying that.

Get it on Pedro, but I don’t know if a gung-ho Fulham and a very injured Brighton team have provided the sternest of defensive tests for Chelsea so far. Arteta is usually pragmatic in big games, so I’d expect Arsenal to be very tight. They’ve conceded about 0.5-0.6 xG so far all season, although they have only played Coventry and a somewhat depleted Villa I suppose

Bring in Dedic or Konsa? Whoever I bring in will start this GW. I have Raya and Cailifori already

Dedic short-term. I think Chelsea will probably score against Arsenal.

    Ah well
    WC3 incoming

    Raya (dubz)
Calafiori De Cuyper Gvardiol (Konsa Ajayi)
    Cherki Sangare Szobosz Palmer (Gross)
    Wissa Joao Pedro Haaland

    A.Gvardiol or NOR ???
    B. Cherki or Foden??

    what you reckon guys??

Wc3 isn’t my favourite because of Chelsea players v Arsenal and very little info.

As teams go this is decent.

In terms of your City dilemmas, rn I have to say Gvardiol and Foden mostly because I think their mins will be better, but it’s very hard to say because it’s still so early in the season…
