The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 3 deadline is tonight, so it’s time for another contributor to share their thoughts.

This time, we hear from FPL Milanista, who you can find here on X. He has six top 10k finishes to his name, as well as a further five in the top 25k.

Two Gameweeks are seemingly enough to make an FPL manager question an entire squad!

Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) blanks in Gameweek 1 and suddenly looks overpriced, then he delivers in Gameweek 2 and becomes essential. Rayan Cherki (£7.7m) moves from a player many managers barely considered to one of the most popular transfers in the game.

Early results give us useful information, but not all the answers. Before we tear up our Gameweek 1 teams, take hits and chase the latest bandwagons, here are seven conclusions we should resist for now.

1. Two blanks mean a player is a bad pick

Bruno Fernandes

This is probably the most important one.

Two blanks do not prove that a player is a poor FPL asset, as they only show that he has not returned points yet.

Bruno Fernandes is a useful reminder: he blanked in Gameweek 1 before delivering a major haul in Gameweek 2. Erling Haaland (£15.5m) followed a similar pattern.

A bad outcome does not necessarily mean the original decision was bad. Judge the role, minutes, underlying threat and fixtures – not just the points total.

2. One huge haul means we have to buy

Cherki, Mbeumo, Newcastle players: Buy, keep or sell in Gameweek 3? conclusions

Rayan Cherki is the obvious example. After two Gameweeks, his two goals and two assists have made him one of the most transferred-in players ahead of Gameweek 3.

But context matters: he did not start in Gameweek 1, and questions remain about his long-term role at Manchester City. His form may be encouraging, but that does not automatically justify restructuring a team, or maybe taking a hit to bring him in.

Buy because the future opportunity looks strong, not because the previous score was large.

3. Points alone prove a player is in form

FPL notes: Haaland's 90 mins, Foden subbed again + time for Guehi

A player can score 12 points without producing much attacking threat, while another can score two points despite having three excellent chances. The second player might actually be the more interesting FPL asset but for some managers, it’s only points that matter.

Consider Phil Foden’s (£7.0m) two big chances against Crystal Palace. Had he converted both and produced a 20-point haul, would Cherki still have attracted the same transfer rush? Probably not.

Short-term points are shaped by fine margins, so pair returns with chance quality, involvement and expected minutes.

4. Two results define a team

FPL notes: Savio latest, Marmoush debut + 3 conclusions

A team’s first two performances do not define its season. Winning both matches does not automatically make a side a title contender, just as two defeats do not mean a team is broken.

The early-season fixture list here matters enormously, and Scout’s new Fixture Difficulty Ratings model is designed around the fact that opponents can significantly affect early returns, so this must be looked at very carefully.

5- Every pre-season conclusion was wrong

FPL notes: Mukiele injury latest, Le Fee pen + Wilson DefCon 3

After two weeks, managers often behave as though all the research completed in late July and early August no longer matters. A player selected for a strong role, favourable fixtures and convincing tactical reasons can quickly become a “must-sell” after two blanks. Competitive matches should update our opinions, but they should not automatically erase everything we knew beforehand. Change your view when the evidence changes and not simply when the points fail to arrive.

6. Every popular transfer is a good transfer

Who were the cheapest starting players in FPL Gameweek 1? 9 conclusions

This is very relevant heading into Gameweek 3, and this particularly ties with a previous article I posted before the season started regarding ownership percentage and how it impacts our squad selection.

Unfortunately, ownership and transfer activity can create the feeling that something is objectively true, but popularity is not evidence, especially in FPL.

Although human beings are vulnerable to fear of missing out, social media hype, and even price changes, we must keep in mind that a transfer doesn’t simply become good because plenty of other managers are doing it.

7. Patience means doing nothing

TC Haaland, best cheap defenders + what to do with Ndiaye? FPL Q&A 4

This is a bit different to the above six points, but I didn’t want this article to be a “just hold everyone” approach; this is not how FPL works.

Patience is not the same as stubbornness, and some signals can be meaningful even after only two Gameweeks. Losing a starting place, giving up penalties or set pieces, or undergoing a major positional change can all justify a transfer. The lesson is not to hold every player regardless of circumstances; it is to react to new information rather than to points alone.

Early Gameweeks should refine a decision-making process, not replace it. Separate outcomes from performance, weigh new evidence against pre-season reasoning and ask whether anything fundamental has changed. In FPL, patience is valuable but informed patience is better.

Good luck, all, in Gameweek 3!

Guys, if you think you've had a bad season, listen to this.

I've had a mare and been an absolute idiot yesterday. A few hours ago I accidentally hit confirm on a WC draft and wiped a huge chunk off my team value and ended up with a defence I hate:

Konsa Ajer Dedic De Cupyer Egan.
    I.e. No double Arsenal.

In a typical twist of fate, to make matters worse Calafiori who I owned rose again about 5 minutes after I hit confirm.

Would you do the following moves to get back double Arsenal defence, albeit I can't now get back to Calafiori.

    Pedro to Wissa
    Dedic to Thiaw
    Ajer to White.

Still a long way to go. Get the players you think will score you the most.

    2. Ze_Austin
      1 month, 17 days ago

      *hugs*

      Don't sell Pedro

Show the full current WC squad. There's likely a 6.5+ mid in there who can drop down to Sangare or Groß, rather than losing Pedro

      1. The-Red-1
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        1 month, 17 days ago

So annoying. I even had Wissa in my squad too, I think the overall loss was about 0.4m!

Here's the mess I've ended up with. I was planning to have triple city and then use FT to transition to this, but I thought best just to get the players I wanted long term...

        It's Verbruggen Dubravka
Konsa Ajer Dedic De Cuyper Egan
        Palmer Bruno Saka Sangare GroB
        Haaland Pedro Egali

        1. Ze_Austin
          1 month, 17 days ago

This is a good team though. Just means you shouldn't need FTs for a while

I'd sooner lose Saka than Pedro to raise those funds, unless you know you'll cap Saka often. Not saying Saka is a bad asset

But this works as it is, and you've got backup if Dedic drops, so he'll be your transfer out

Lol this team is still good. Isn't much of a headache as I thought.

Ditch Saka for a 6.5-8.0 midfielder, ditch Sangare/ Groß. You can still have Calafiori.

    3. Cantonesque
      1 month, 17 days ago

Just roll with it now. Not the most appealing GW for Arsenal defence anyway. That defence is still extremely decent in its own right and now you have tonnes of cash to splash on forwards. Lean into it! Might turn out to be the best thing that could've happened, you never know.

    Would you change anything?

    Kelleher

    Isak Haaland (c) Thiago

    4.0 Slater Ajayi Egan

    1. Cantonesque
      1 month, 17 days ago

Was gonna say I don't see the appeal of Robinson but for a FH Crystal Palace is not a bad team to target for a punt. Having said that, is Fulham a good team to target them with? All the Villa defenders (Cash?) are 4.5m and playing Hull, albeit away. Just a thought.

Ajer over Kayode. Get the extra 2 points

Is this the GW Thiago finally explodes (Sunderland isn't exactly leaky), or will Sangare outscore him again with his floor of 4 points? I'd trust Wissa more for now, or go 3-5-2

Calafiori Hall Williams over a Fulham defender, imo

If you're still on 3-4-3, Yalcouyé over Slater

      1. Roy Rovers

Yup! I don't think Livra starts immediately, so you can get Dedic's attacking threat on FH

  13. Ze_Austin
    1 month, 17 days ago

Sold Bruno on WC2. That was painful, but I somehow don't see a route back yet; maybe GW6? Had Mbeumo for his haul, then switched to Cherki vs Coventry with my FT

    Tzolakis
    Gvardiol De Cuyper Ajer
    Palmer (V)Cherki Szobo Sangare
    (TC)Haaland Pedro Wissa
    .
    Verbruggen Odegaard Calafiori White
    .
    0 FT. 0.5 ITB

I could TC or BB here. I always go with the obvious TC without overthinking it, so Haaland now for me

That leaves picking 4 of these lads (including GK) for the bench... Yikes

    1. Cantonesque
      1 month, 17 days ago

Very tough, yikes indeed, but TC edges BB for me there. Maybe get Cala though on the field, Szobo first bench.

Final decision on WC, advice please gents:

    Yalcouye/Tzolakis OR Gomez/4.0 keeper.

Yalcouye will be benched unless and until he a) seems nailed b) for a good fixture c) has sustained form and d) is better on all those than Sangare. So probably permabench, even this week when a-c are met.
Gomez likewise, but higher probability to shunt Sangare to bench, and basically more appealing if sub needed. But since I can't have Steele, being set on 2 Brighton outfielders, seems best to have a playable goalie backup?

    Verbruggen / (Tsolakis)
Calafiori / Hall / De Cuyper / (Konsa) / (Egan)
    Fernandes / Palmer / Foden / Sangare / (Yalcouye)
    Haaland / Pedro / Wissa

(Egan is in there as everyone on here rates for DCs, which seems right, though I started with Ajayi for his price rise and hate giving that up! Also giving up 0.1 purchase value earned on each of Gvardiol and Cherki who I tried to squeeze in but oh well can't have them all.)

    1. Ze_Austin
      1 month, 17 days ago

      Tzolakis isn't a backup 🙂

Rotating him with Verbruggen (no save points in tough games) likely brings way more points than rotating a DC mid (just play him vs everyone) with a winger, imo

That's why I prefer Tzolakis... And yeah, Yalcouyé as well

      1. Cantonesque
        1 month, 17 days ago

Thanks Ze, yeah Tzol has e.g. Brentford and Ipswich at home the two weeks in a row that Verb has Pool and City away, so more than a "backup".
Although I do feel that Yalcouye will not even be a backup when Ayari, Hinshelwood etc. are back, just deadwood.
Should probably bite the bullet and go with the weak outfield bench here. Played BB GW1 for this exact reason after all.

        1. Ze_Austin
          1 month, 17 days ago

Exactly that. With a 4.5 def first sub and a 4.0 DC lad second, you can easily get away with dead 3rd for a long while imo. That's what folks on 3-5-2 have to do anyway

Until you've got spare funds and FTs

          1. Cantonesque
            1 month, 17 days ago

The wrinkle is that Konsa is honestly quite the punt right now. Might remain a 1-point cameo player all season, for all we know. In this situation I'd switch him to say Ajer or Justin, maybe even Shaw or Dedic-toon-double-up if I had the extra 0.1. But alas.

So a lot riding on Egan, and on not needing more than 1 sub for quite a stretch.

I could go back to Dedic over Hall though. I don't think Livramento waltzes back in. Manager handpicked Dedic personally and it has been working out great for them.

            1. Ze_Austin
              1 month, 17 days ago

Fwiw, I feel you'll sell De Cuyper before Konsa

Mosquera's injury made this easier than it was meant to be

              1. Cantonesque
                1 month, 17 days ago

Yeah, we're getting deep in the weeds here but the fragility of De Cuyper as an asset past the medium term actually reinforces my point. Cala/Hall/Egan are the only real bankers in my defence draft, so 3rd bench potentially becomes less of a "dead 3rd".

Hadn't seen an update on Mosquera since Arteta came out with "just precautionary withdrawal", so now I looked it up and he has missed training. So Konsa probably gets the Chelsea game (benching him anyway) but after that, who knows.

                1. Ze_Austin
                  1 month, 16 days ago

Fair enough, but these issues are unlikely

You'd have a FT or few, De Cuyper still starting for weeks to months, and a very good squad except 2nd and 3rd subs

Check how often you've had your second sub come on since you started playing FPL

I wouldn't worry too much about this

Cheers Yankee. Slater doesn't appeal to me, Hull just added 3 or 4 more midfielders to the 6 or 7 they already had lol. If I went Verb Steele I would have 5M for a non-Brighton mid but there are none, outside maybe Armstrong. Nobody mentions Armstrong on here but he might be a real option this season ... but I think Ze has confirmed me on rotatable keepers ...

Isn't it optimal to go O'Reilly + Cherki on FH?

      1. Emiliano Sala

My optimal is haaland, semenyo and cherki

Do you think oreilly starts? I really like him

Only because semenyo will play more than cherki most likely

...as he's done in the first 2 GWs, looking a lot less threatening

Does De Cuyper move to LB when Mitoma returns from injury, or does he get benched? I assume Herzler moves Kadıoğlu to RB and De Cuyper slots into the LB spot.

    I just can't decide:
A: De Cuyper - short term, explosive
B: Dedic - long term, safe

    1. Amartey Partey
      1 month, 17 days ago

      Dedic isn’t safe either.

      1. Yankee Toffee
        1 month, 17 days ago

Jaissle brought him specifically from Benfica and its worked out well. I don't think Livra threatens him. Dedic also had two assists midweek vs W Brom in a close match, 3-2 win. I feel like he's safe, but I could be wrong.

        1. Amartey Partey
          1 month, 17 days ago

He’s safe right now, but Livramento is a good player, so it’s difficult to say he’s nailed long term. Hall is safe though.

        2. Cantonesque
          1 month, 17 days ago

I agree on Dedic, I think the position is his to lose. Also agree on De Cuyper, great option with high ceiling for now but a transfer waiting to happen in the medium term.
Having said that, I'm taking De Cuyper over Dedic, but I'm sticking Hall in too so it's an easier call.
If you are on WC right now can't you have both? If not, why not take De Cuyper and you can always drop him when you wildcard if he is no longer OOP.

    2. Ze_Austin
      1 month, 17 days ago

De Cuyper will likely be benched, as he was last season. He's backup in both spots. A very good rotating option, but not nailed

Thing is... That's weeks/months away, and 1 FT by then 🙂

Livra is in training. I don't know what will happen beyond this GW

      Go De Cuyper imo.

One of the things I've found is that players can play themselves into the team. I remember not buying James Justin when he was at Leicester even though he was the cheapest option from their defense, attacking and great data because he was not nailed and Ricardo Pereira was nearly fit again.

He went and outscored the guy I had by like 30 points over the next 5/6 weeks and I learnt my lesson.

Take the points while he's LW OoP and then you can deal with the problem later if it even becomes one.

How Cherki isn’t nailed for city is crazy. Every time he plays for them he creates and scores goals.

    1. Ze_Austin
      1 month, 17 days ago

It's what happens in training and when he doesn't create and score that seems to be the issue

That's three managers I've seen do this now? 2 at City, 1 at France...

      1. Amartey Partey
        1 month, 17 days ago

True. I’ve got him on WC for Coventry, but I’ll probably sell for Rogers next week.

He's got a poor attitude and work ethic. Managers hate that.

    Cherki and verbruggen

    Or

    Foden and Trafford?

I kind of like the idea of a differential goalkeeper and think that Leeds defence will be fairly solid and Trafford should do well there. Like many I’m also unsure of the Foden vs cherki toss up and scared that this might be a break out season for cherki

    1. Amartey Partey
      1 month, 17 days ago

I’ve thought about this too. Trafford looks a solid keeper. I’m probably going with V and C though because Foden always blanks when I buy him.

    Morning

In your opinion who is the best 4.5 DF to have for this team for the next few GWs

    Kinsky Dubravka
Calaflori Gvardiol De Cuyper Thomas xxxxxxxx
    Fernandes Mbeumo Szoboszial Foden Slater
    Pedro Haaland DCL

    Any ideas would be welcomed

BTW, I went with Verb/Steele instead of Kinsky/Dubravka for the 8.5 GK combo. Both have busy schedules but Brighton better fixtures in the immediate.

I think I might decide to hold off on WC4.

I'm just not sure yet whether a Saka, Fernandes or Isak/Barcola draft is the direction. The template is Gross - Sangare as enablers but they're functional rather than interesting. Someone like Ndoye or Pino could emerge and the defender template I'm also a bit hesitant on.

It's a bit early imo and a lot of CCs want to catch the City and Chelsea fixtures in 3/4 which is fueling the WC mania. But I typically prefer waiting until at least GW5 or 6 for more accurate team data.

Two games isn't really enough and world cup season as well. This is also a big season of change for many top teams - Pool, City, Chelsea. The data will be worth it I hope.

I'm rarely this patient but I can't confidently say I like certain draft directions and this particular week is not very nice to WC either because of Chelsea - Arsenal fixture where you ideally will want 3 of each going forward.

    1. JT11fc
      1 month, 16 days ago

More data needed for sure, aslong as your team is not seriously bad

    2. PartyTime
      1 month, 16 days ago

It's a game week right after the intl break so that's a fair conclusion. I already used mine because that's my approach every season & prefer to be aggressive, otherwise I will be playing catch up.

Pros like you can hold off because of the current insufficient data, but the main reason I wouldn't do it in week 4 is because of the intl break.

      1. Amartey Partey

I’m already happy with my defence though: Calafiori, White, Hall, De Cuyper, Egan.

      I see the vision

      Foden over Szobo, right?

      1. Amartey Partey
        1 month, 16 days ago

Foden over MGW, and then I have enough cash for Trafford over Vebruggen.

        1. Ze_Austin
          1 month, 16 days ago

          Fair enough. I like it

I might be the only one who got turned off Foden by that Palace game. I knew him to be more accurate than that

Probably building confidence back up though. The skill is there

          1. Amartey Partey
            1 month, 16 days ago

I’m not really too eager to get Foden because I always seem to miss his points. The Coventry game is just swerving my head.

Think Im set on this FH

    Hornicek
    Kayode Collins Thiaw
    Semenyo Foden MGW Wirtz
    Haaland Isak Thiago

    4.0 Egan Slater 4.0

    GK choice is tricky

    1. Ze_Austin

      Yalcouyé over Slater on FH

        1. Ze_Austin
          1 month, 16 days ago

I'd take Wissa over Thiago. Sunderland's attack is blunt, but their defence is good. Not a FH target to me

Semenyo over Cherki on Free Hit feels wrong, but I guess you have your reasons

Ajer's extra 2 points over Kayode for me

          Thiaw vs Hall...

Are these picks for differential reasons?

          1. JT11fc
            1 month, 16 days ago

Wissa point is a good one.
I feel like Coventry are week on their right, Arsenal players hauled there.
Thiaw and Kayode were 50/50s for me

            1. Ze_Austin
              1 month, 16 days ago

Watching Semenyo in Community Shield and these 2 GWs kept me away because of how Maresca plays him, rather than the opponent's strengths

Seems more involved in crossing than shooting now, which is annoying

You could be on to something though

              1. JT11fc
                1 month, 16 days ago

Ye I did have Cherki for those reasons, but if Semenyo can get behind the full back he likes to drive towards goal

      2. Amartey Partey
        1 month, 16 days ago

        Is Yalcouye first choice now?

        1. Ze_Austin
          1 month, 16 days ago

No, but this is a Free Hit and his competition's injured. Getting him long term is riskier
