Scout Scribbles – Giroud Nets Again

Olivier Giroud is amongst the goals yet again as France see off Denmark. Steven Fletcher bags a hat-trick as Scotland rout Gibraltar, Shane Long grabs a vital equaliser for the Republic of Ireland, whilst Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic pops up with a rare goal for Serbia.

Arsenal trio last the distance

Olivier Giroud was on target in France’s 2-0 friendly win over Denmark last night. Mesut Ozil played the full 90 minutes of Germany’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia, providing an assist for Thomas Muller in a comfortable 2-0 victory. Alexis Sanchez also lasted from start to finish as Chile fell to a 1-0 defeat against Brazil in a friendly at the Emirates.

The Scout Says: After playing less than 10 minutes for Les Bleus earlier in the week, Giroud’s goal offers his 15% ownership encouragement that he can perpetuate a five-match scoring streak in the league and register against a resilient Liverpool backline this coming Saturday. Those Fantasy managers not already in possession of the French marksman will likely hold off until after the north London club’s blank Gameweek 33 – and, perhaps, their Gameweek 34 tie against Chelsea – to consider recruiting the red-hot frontman. Ozil has now played from start to finish in both Germany’s matches over the break, whilst Sanchez – despite Arsene Wenger’s fatigue concerns – has played all but 45 minutes over Chile’s pair of fixtures. At least the South American showdown took place on home soil, ensuring that long-haul flights aren’t a factor for Sanchez to contend with.

Fletcher nets historic hat-trick

Steven Fletcher recorded Scotland’s first hat-trick in over 46 years as they thrashed Gibraltar 6-1 in their Euro 2016 home qualifier. Everton’s Steven Naismith was also amongst the goals, side-footing in from close range to give the hosts an unassailable 4-1 lead before half time.

The Scout Says: Fletcher has been deployed in a wide role for Sunderland in their last two fixtures but yesterday’s showing may persuade new manager Dick Advocaat to shift him to the centre alongside Jermain Defoe in a change of tactics. The Black Cats boss rolled out a 4-3-3 in his first match in charge and handed Fletcher and Connor Wickham the roles out wide, though is keen to bring Adam Johnson back into contention after ending the winger’s club suspension for the trip to West Ham. In all honesty, though, the Wearsiders’ tough run-in – which includes trips to Everton, Arsenal and Chelsea – limits our interest in Fletcher as a potential budget forward. Naismith, meanwhile, will be hoping to take advantage of the injury situation up front at Everton in order to earn a first start since Gameweek 28. Roberto Martinez has recently moved to 4-4-2, with Romelu Lukaku partnered by Arouna Kone, but with both still doubtful due to hamstring and knee injuries, the Scot – priced at just 4.8 – may find himself back in contention ahead of clashes with Swansea, Burnley, Villa and Sunderland in the next six.

Montero concern for Swans

Jefferson Montero is a doubt for Ecuador’s friendly against Argentina on Wednesday after being subbed off in their Mexico clash due to an apparent thigh injury.

The Scout Says: Montero has hardly been a key figure for Swansea this campaign, only managing one league start since the turn of the year. Garry Monk’s decision to switch to 4-3-2-1 and hand Wayne Routledge a central support role beside Gylfi Sigurdsson has limited Montero’s potential, though the latter has been pushing for more pitch time in recent outings after supplying an assist off the bench in two of the last four league fixtures. Given that the Swans have five excellent upcoming fixtures (HUL, EVE, lei, new, STO), investment in their main men looks a viable tactic, though it remains to be seen whether the Ecuadorian can find a place in his manager’s first XI plans.

De Jong closing in on return

Siem de Jong is scheduled to return to training with Newcastle in a fortnight after recovering from a collapsed lung. The former Ajax star has spent his time on the sidelines analysing the Toons’ matches and feels that he can exploit the space in “the hole” that’s usually vacated by opposing teams:

”I think it’s a really good position for me and I’ve seen a lot of games in England now. A lot of teams play with two strikers, or one striker and two wingers. The position behind the striker is usually free, which is interesting. We’ve tried to play with it but Moussa (Sissoko) is more of a player who goes to the outside and runs with the ball more. I’m more of a player who holds the ball and tries to find the holes in between. I’ve seen a lot of games where there is space in between the holes and I think: ‘I could have made a big difference there!’ I still think it’s a great role for me but I have to earn it.”

The Scout Says: If he can prove his fitness and return to action before the season is out, the 6.8-priced De Jong certainly has the fixtures to flourish. Newcastle are handed a quintet of favourable clashes (SWA, lei, WBA, qpr, WHU) in the final five Gameweeks which look potentially profitable to the Dutchman who netted 10+ times in four of his last five campaigns in the Eredivisie. Remy Cabella and Yoan Gouffran have operated in that No. 10 role in recent weeks to limited effect, paving the way for De Jong to belatedly show why the club splashed the cash to take him from Ajax last summer.

Matic effort not enough for Serbia

Nemanja Matic scored a consolation goal in Serbia’s 2-1 loss to Portugal in their European Championship qualifier, rifling in an overhead volley from a tight angle inside the penalty box. Aleksandar Kolarov played the full 90 minutes against A Seleccao on his return from injury.

The Scout Says: Matic’s acrobatic effort is somewhat of a collectors item for the Chelsea enforcer, having only tallied three goals in 57 starts since his move to Stamford Bridge. Clearly, Blues boss Jose Mourinho is far more concerned with the Serbian’s ability to break up possession in the centre of the park, a pursuit that could be negatively affected by the threat of suspension – Matic is currently one yellow card away from a two-match ban and will have to watch his step during encounters with Stoke and QPR before the April 14 cut-off date. Kolarov’s return to action could prevent Gael Clichy from earning a third successive start at left-back as the Sky Blues gear up for a visit to Crystal Palace; with three goals conceded in the last five, the champions are starting to look a reliable source of defensive returns.

Long’s last-gasp strike earns Ireland draw

Shane Long netted a stoppage-time goal for the Republic of Ireland, earning a vital 1-1 draw against Group D opponents Poland to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The Scout Says: Despite only entering the fray in the 83rd minute, Long’s eye for goal was quickly in evidence for the home side as he continued his recent domestic form. In light of Graziano Pelle’s 13-match goal drought, Saints boss Ronald Koeman has started Long in the previous two fixtures – the last of which saw the Ex-Hull frontman bag his third goal of the campaign. With showdowns against five of the bottom eight in the next seven Gameweeks, the 5.4-priced striker has the platform to end the season strongly as Koeman attempts to take advantage of the schedule and steer his side to a top-four finish.

Better option here to go with Krul? Which has more CS potential?

A: Myhill x4 (QPR, LEI, cpl, new) + Krul x4 (SWA, lei, qpr, WHM)

B: Davis x6 (eve, HUL, sto, sun, lei, AVL) + Krul x2 (SWA, WHM)

Over the next 3? I was thinking of replacing Foster with Davis next week so that I could have

Myhill (QPR) Davis (HUL sto) instead of

          Myhill (QPR LEI cry)

Is that an improvement in fixtures to you? 🙂

Davis/Myhill doesn't work that well on fixtures, but I went for it. The alternative I rejected (and which rotates much better) was Schmeichel/Myhill - I just don't trust Leicester to keep clean sheets despite their fixtures.

Ive done alot better since I stopped looking at this site since just after Xmas. Coincidence or just the fact that this site probabl;y confuses you more than just looking at fixtures and making your mind up. I asked awhile ago what the benefits are of this site by paying membership. I totally get the whole upkeep of the site etc... But for me after one season of being a member i found this site just puts more silly ideas in your head.. For anyone looking to join my advice is don't bother paying membership you get the exact same as if you weren't a member. Sorry for bad write up i'm in work and fast typing. So lets hear what some of you have to say i'm sure i'm gonna get a lot of smart arsed answers with all the smart arsed know it all on the site. Another reason not to join.

Stupid Q's being asked by people when all they have to do is google it. Is this person injured, Who have this team got in their next 4 fixtures. Google it.... Anyway thats my last post probably. Great articles etc but the whole membership thing is a farce... And it's just my opinion so don't take it to heart you lot.....

Any replies you get are assistance, you're the one that pulls the trigger. With the membership you get a plethora of stats and data to compare players, aide your decisions, assess options and provide rationale to choices. An awful lot of work goes into that, and it's extremely helpful if used properly. The contributors aren't psychic; they provide as much data as possible as a basis for YOUR choices.

The people on here that have given you advice, me included, have taken time out to help you with something that is of no benefit to them. The fact that many on here are in the top 100/1000, and even top of the world, shows that their advice is good, and that this site has helped them. You, however, have taken the help and kindness of people and come on here to complain that you have messed up your season. Well boo hoo, we're all heartbroken that you won't be here to take our advice.

The good thing about a site like this is you get ideas or possibilities being discussed that you may not have thought of by yourself. Perhaps if you are someone who avidly watches matches and highlights programs, reads papers and follows websites you will have enough knowledge to build your own 'watchlist' of possible transfers and make good decisions. I'm not, so I enjoy reading the thoughts of others. In the end we all make our own decisions and shouldn't blame someone else for any suggestions we chose to follow.

As for stupid questions being asked all the time; I generally know what the weather is like outside the office, but I'll still discuss it with a colleague rather than just google it. I find it's more enjoyable shared with others and that, ultimately, is the point, no?

Yeah, I do sort-of get the point. I've been 'persuaded' a couple of times this season to do something which turned out to be a bad move, but I've also benefitted hugely from some of the discussions (Tadic GW8 I would never have had otherwise and I wouldn't have been on Kane as early etc.). I was trying to think of an example
Best one for me was Coleman at start of last year. I dismissed the suggestion first couple of times then when people who I value posted it I took the plunge.

I'm just giving my advice I got the same post off someone when I first asked about it. I didn't listen went and found out for myswelf and now I agree with that poster. I'm just adding to it. But you see the posters who are just licking their lips for a post like this so they can all huddle together and think they're higher than most people. The guy trying to involve breadbin just says it all I've seen people ask Qs and just got abused. I could name the posters and fro me that doesnt sit well.

          Fair enough
I do think you need to create a filter on here when looking for ideas. For me it took me a couple of years to learn that.
But I do think you are underselling the good advice that can be obtained.
Even something simple as an unknown injury can make a big difference. It all being here saves googling looking for stuff

I'm confused. Is your issue with the members only content (enhanced ticker, extra articles, DIY stats tables, etc.) or with the comments/feedback to questions asked?

If the stats and articles that you get by being a member aren't of benefit to you and your playing style then that's completely understandable but it feels like you're associating getting poor/confusing advice to being a member - those are two separate things. Members and non-members alike get equally poor advice (at least when I'm posting 🙂 )

Inevitably some managers don't find the members stuff useful if they play by their gut - I'm somewhere in between styles in that I don't follow the stats religiously but I will check them sometimes. When I do want to look at the stats I find the members area great. All personal taste though - I don't think it's fair to paint it as either useful or not.

As for receiving bad/confusing advice it's all about applying personal filters to the suggestions given.

the way i sees it is that this site gives you all the information needed to make good judgements. the thing is that some people lack the faculties to correctly process this information, making bad decisions based on misconstrued data. then other people listen to those people and things have soon gone to hell in a handbasket.

FFS is helpful, but you're not too far from the truth. This site is kind of a shortcut for information that you could get by yourself and you really do get some stupid ideas here at times...I don't mind them though since I'm thinking with my own head and managing my own team.

Didn't Dufflinks say he only watched about 5 games all year . So he is clearly exclusively relying on the stats on here to do well ? . I don't like the comment about stupid questions. Surely people can ask what ever they want ?

Last word on this... Thanks to anyone who wrote back with some sort of an intelligent answer. Alot of you have put things into a different perspective for me. I am still a novice at this site thats for sure. And with the amount of replies that seem to say the same thing I should probably sit back and havea think about it going forward. That is what I love about this site. There are some lads/lasses on this who are genuinely decent and do give some sound advice. And of course we have the other type of poster which i wont get into.

Rambling now but anyway thanks for your replies and advice.

Seriously, was this post necessary? You made up your mind, and you seem to be fine. So, what was your point in this post? You say "don't take it to heart..." yet you know your post will offend some, so your comment in that regard is truly disingenuous. You also completely fail to acknowledge the whole community aspect of the site, and only focus on the fact that many folks can find answers through other means, or might be better off having the confidence to make their own decisions. Still, your post reads a tad arrogant, and while you certainly have every right to feel the way you do, you probably did not do yourself much service in expressing these largely "I'm better than you all" thoughts to an entire community. No class.

ve done alot better since I stopped looking at this site since just after Xmas.

Sad reality is he's not on the same level as Costa, Aguero, Rooney etc. Giroud will not win you titles. Good player, yes, league winner? No.

Do you think there are certain positions that you can sort of get away with having average players or can having world class players cover up for having an average squad ? .

Obviously, but centre-forward is one position you certainly shouldn't be cutting back on. Most of the top sides in Europe have a 'world class' forward. This is the level Arsenal really should be competing at.

I find it very hard to pin point an exact flaw with Arsenal tbh . It's not just Giroud . Barca can play the way they play because they press so high up the pitch and Messi makes up for a lot , Bayern have a fantastic team and they are physically strong aswell . Arsenal do not have either and are constantly exposed . I thought they should have learned their lesson after the 6 - 1 game against Chelsea and they certainly should learn from the Monaco game.

Not sure what all that was about, or why my character is being questioned by someone I don't know on a light hearted FPL site. Badgevilla, I was merely questioning why you would criticise people for trying to help you. The personal attack on me was unnecessary; I like the community on this site, but it isn't exactly something I need as a self-esteem boost - I just use it when I'm bored in work.

Apologies to all if I was contributing to the hostility on here.

You can't read them, they were deleted. I questioned why you were criticising people's advice, and you replied saying I am an attention seeker sucking up to my "cronies" on here, that I am sad, and that I am at home on benefits. Not quite the same...

I don't follow the so called 'gang' you keep mentioning. I am not what you would call a regular poster.

If as you say - you don't follow the crowd - then how come you are blaming poor comments and stats to your bad fantasy season? surely if you are not one to follow a crowd you, of all people, should not be affecting by suggestions from other posters.

The end of the day the transfer and decisions you make are yours and yours alone. The decisions to become a member is yours, and if you don't like being a member and if you find it doesn't help, don't renew. If you think people on FFS are in a gang and post stupid comments, either don't use the site or filter the comments better.

It really is simple. I this site but there is a lot of RMTs and silly questions. Do I make a point about that? No. Because it will always be that way. I learn the to take advice from the posters I trust and know and then I apply it to my own team and decide on my own. I never blame bad advice for a bad gameweek. I can only blame myself.

At the end of the day it's only a game, one that free to play. People don't goole everything because this site is a community. People prefer to ask other people for advice as oppose to a search engine.

I give what I get. I started the post and I never attacked anyone in it. I stated how I felt and got some silly smart replies as you do. I was better to shrug them off but I didn't sure allowing myself to reply to them might let off som steam anyway. I just hate attention seeking, Victim playing idiots who can't reply with an intelligent Answer. It finds out who the real FPL players are anyway

I'd say calling me sad, attention-seeking (for referring to a Cricket WC team mate as "team mate"), unintelligent, victim playing, and saying I'm on benefits, is "attacking" me, particularly as all I did was say it's ungrateful to criticise people for trying to help you.
