Will the real Eden Hazard please stand up?

Five weeks into the season and the 10.0-valued Belgian has shown us both his 2014-15 Player of the Year form and a couple of stuttering and anonymous performances reminiscent of his woeful last campaign.

The problem for the 27.6% of Fantasy Premier League managers who own him is that trying to work out which version of Hazard they’re going to get from week to week is becoming an increasingly vexed and costly issue.

Throw in a nasty set of upcoming fixtures and it could well be time to cash out and use the freed-up funds on returning Sergio Aguero (13.0) to the Fantasy fold.

Hazard has two goals and an assist from five matches thus far. But 21 of his 28 points have come from just two performances, and he’s managed a mere three points from his last two fixtures.

He is still owned by more than a million FPL managers, even though his price has now dropped a whopping 0.3 in a week. Such loyalty is laudable for a player who is now down to ninth among the highest scoring FPL midfielders, with only two of those above him costing more – Alexis Sanchez (11.0) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.7).

Even if we discount the astonishing early season form of Etienne Capoue (5.0) on the grounds that he’s got to stop being so brilliant sooner or later, comparisons with others at the top of their midfield game do not serve Hazard well.

The Man City pair of De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling (8.4), currently second and third in the midfielders’ table, play in a side showing serious consistency, which is more than you can say for Chelsea.

They also have a fixture list that offers a lot more promise than Chelsea’s, with a Gameweek 7 trip to Spurs their toughest test all the way through to an early December match at home to Hazard and co.

And both have been easily out-performing him over the last three Gameweeks.

Hazard has managed a goal and no assists, nine goal attempts, a shot accuracy of 44.4% and a 38.6 minutes per chance created average. De Bruyne’s stats are two, two, 12, 50% and 20 minutes respectively, while Sterling weighs in with three, one, 10, 50% and 83 minutes – that latter stat the only one Hazard can better.

The other big-ticket player in the top ten, Alexis Sanchez, also puts Hazard in the shade for the most part, with three goals, one assist, 10 goal attempts, a 70% shot accuracy and a 56.5 minutes per chance created average.

All three also have a better minutes per chance average than Hazard’s 30.

In fact, the only area to offer a crumb of comfort for Hazard owners involves Chelsea’s team stats – the side is currently top for attempts (62), chances created (49) and minutes per chance (4.5).

But they’ll do well to keep those levels up over the next four fixtures. Chelsea will be away at Arsenal and Hull City and then home to Leicester and Man United. There’s also Everton, Spurs and that Man City match to come through to early December.

Unless Hazard picks up the pace again, and does so during a seriously tough run of fixtures, his value is going to drop further.

Time then to cash in on one of the game’s most expensive midfielders? The need to find funds to push through the return of Sergio Aguero to the Fantasy ranks has certainly never been so urgent.

Swapping Hazard for Capoue nets 5.0 and Theo Walcott 2.5. Even Sterling frees up 1.6 towards Aguero’s monster price tag.

Or maybe the ‘reverse curse’ of Fading Fast will save him – last week we doubted Riyad Mahrez and he promptly scored two Champions League goals and notched an FPL assist. The previous week’s (unpublished) piece on Harry Kane also preceded the Spurs man’s mini goal rush.

Time will tell. But it’s also close to running out for the talented, but increasingly erratic, Belgian.

AoA to be played this week? I'd drop Kosc to the bench.

    Pickford
    Williams, Valencia
    Ozil, Sterling, Antonio, Firminho, Capoue
    Lukaku, Aguero (c), Benteke

That could very well be true, but that game is so unpredictable. It could end with either a CS or it could be a goal fest, who knows!
The only reason why I would bench Ozil is that he's currently out of form, but Sterling/Antonio/Firm and Capoue isn't. 🙂

Well, you could play your AOA (which is kind of useless anyway), but that chip could be used when you actually have a problem with your defense (injuries or suspensions).
I'm not predicting that ARS will keep a clean sheet, but you can never know. Besides, Kosc is always a threat on corners and seems to step up during big games.

You have two defenders left that you haven't mentioned, anyone worth playing?

Swansea - Amat and the King (minus points!)

He may have a goal threat but bread and butter is clean sheets, I can see BTTS.

      Keep Ozil.

I honestly think he's due at least an assist at least. I think we will see a similar scoreline to last week, with BTTS and there being a total of 3-4 goals.

If anything I would take out valencia. I took him out for Baines 3 weeks ago, based on man u fixtures. He'll be up against Mahrez this week and though United will likely have more possession, I think they will concede.

Other than that you should be looking at a 50 pt+ haul/over the average points from that team.

if ozil wants to break his current form, it will be next week not vs chelsea imo. 3 points (max) incoming..AOA might be wasted.

don't have to follow my advice though

        Agreed on the Ozil front.

I think it will certainly be BTTS, Kos bread and butter should be clean sheets, thats isnt going to happen IMO this fixture the way current form is.

    Current WC XI:

    Pickford

    Williams | Lovren | Holebas

    Sanchez | Sterling | Firmino | Antonio

    Aguero | Lukaku | Deeney

Bench: Jaku | Evans | Capoue | Amat

I'm now thinking of doing Sanchez > Eriksen for this GW, easier fixture and I can leave the money ITB for the following GW when Arsenal's fixtures look better. But then part of me also thinks I should do Sterling > KdB along with it.

RE: Holebas - Are people keeping him in? Who else from Watford is a cert? I have Evans on the bench though so it's not too bad of a predicament.

I am going super cheap at the back so im playing the same 3 every week for a while until I need to downgrade Ibra if necessary.

So to answer your question the other defenders are Amat and Kingsley

Hm, Amat and Kingsley against mighty Pep & Co....
If you're looking for a replacement, either Kelly 4.4 or wait for Francis to (hopefully) drop to 4.4 tomorrow and get him then. Then maybe upgrade Amat/Kingsley to Evans?

As if Liverpool are 2nd favourites to win the Premier League - that's ridiculous.

Bookies change their minds like the weather...I'm guessing they're trying to learn from their mistake with Leicester last season

They're going off of 5 games. Can't expect much else.

I'd still heavily favour any of Arsenal, Chelsea, United to finish above Liverpool

2 teams which Liverpool have beat.. 😉

Get your point, but the bookies exist to make money.

Oh don't get me wrong I love Liverpool and think they're by far best team to watch. However, until they prove they can roll over smaller teams one after the other in the prem I don't see them as proper challengers.

I think the league, Hazard and Chelski have changed in the past couple of seasons, and I think Hazard will be a fixture option but not a season keeper. He is not as destructive as Sanchez, and I expect Firmino, Mane, Sanchez, Payet and KDB to outscore him in attacking set ups.

I do not think he has the same desire to score 2/3 goals in a game. And I think Chelski are a team in transition, with under performing and ageing players and a system issue. I am not confident about them finishing in the top 4 and I think they will score considerably less than Liverpool and City, and probably less than Arsenal too.

"Hazard is not as destructive as Sanchez"

      You seen that Burnley game?

Conte said he wants Hazard to score more. He is on pens. You can't go wrong with him. Happy everyone is taking him out

This place will be deserted on a matchday if him and Ibra do well

Not if Lukaku and KDB/Sanchez do well too 😉

I'm with you on Ibra, but having watched Chelsea's last two games I shipped Hazard as soon as the final whistle blew last Friday evening.

Have you read Hazard's past comments about goal scoring?

Who has scored more braces, Sanchez or Hazard?

Who has scored more hat-tricks, Sanchez or Hazard?

I have been watching a consistent Hazard over the past few years who was world class at his best. But he was never a destructive Hazard, and has been inconsistent for club and country for over a year.

It is a team thing to, with Chelsea and United also. They clearly have issues that could not be transformed over night.

Matic has dropped off considerably from two seasons ago, and Kante's more reserved role seems to negate some of the energy that prompted many a Leicester attack. The defence has big issues, Oscar is over-rated and they seem to lack a passer from deep. This will impact on their results, goal scoring and obviously clean sheets.

I would not fancy Ibra at the moment, because United do not know their best 11, and because they clearly have an endemic confidence issue. I don't understand how one City game can cause so much of an impact, but there is a fragility there. The passing has gone sideways instead of forward for the past three games and Mourinho, no longer darling of the press, has already begun criticising the players.

Ibra will score well because he is Ibra, but he is not the player he was and will drop deeper when he is isolated from play. I expect him to get approaching 20 league goals, but then I expect Lukaku to do that as well, and probably Costa, irrespective of Chelsea's issues. I also think Sanchez will outscore Ibra across the season with the extra points for goals, clean sheets and the likely extra assists.

"Ibra...will drop deeper when he is isolated from play."

Disagree. He is strictly a line-leader now because he doesn't have the legs to do anything else. He's never back inside his own half, & usually hangs around 5 yards offside to jog back on when Man U come forward.

Start Foster (away to STO) or Pickford (home to CRY) this week?

Have Evans and starting him, so tempted to go with Pickford to balance out..

I tend to spread the risk, having 2 defenders from one team who concede can be a killer. I'm starting Pickford too if that helps.

Kun Lukaku Sanchez Firmino Capoue locked into WC front 8, who joins them?

    A) Sterling Antonio Rashford (bench Cap)
    B) Sterling Payet Diomande (start Cap bench Diomande)
    C) Snoddy Payet Rashford (start Cap bench Snoddy)

Currently on A but have a feeling Payet might explode. Thoughts?

Stick with A, Sterling is a much better option then Snodgrass IMO

No doubt he is, what about B with Sterling & Payet? Diomande is an issue but it would mean playing Capoue in red hot form

    Good to go?

Thinking of rolling a FT next week into the International break and then sorting out my poor bench.

    Foster

    Valencia – Walker – Williams

    Hazard – Ozil – Antonio – Zaha – Capoue

    Aguero (C) – Lukaku

    Bench:
    Heaton; Gray; Collins; Souare
