Adam Lallana maintains his fine recent form, while Roberto Firmino breaks his scoring duck as Liverpool secure a comeback win over Stoke City. Here’s the impact of last night’s action.

On the Rise

Adam Lallana
It’s four goals and an assist in the last four Gameweeks for the Liverpool midfielder after his leveller against Stoke.

Now up to fourth in the FPL midfield standings, the 7.5-priced Lallana’s average of 6.1 points per match is bettered only by Alexis Sanchez (7.2) and Eden Hazard (6.6) in that position.

Nonetheless, the upcoming schedule could be a lot easier for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Up against Man City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Spurs in the next seven Gameweeks, heavy investment in the Reds comes packaged with a major caveat, particularly at a time when the schedule smiles kindly on the likes of Arsenal and United.

Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino
The England international needed just seconds to get on the scoresheet after capitalising on a wayward Ryan Shawcross back pass.

Sturridge continues to be handed minutes off the bench by his manager but is strengthening his claim for a starting role with every appearance – he’s now scored or assisted in three of his last four, despite all those outings arriving as a substitute.

Although Divock Origi supplied an assist, he’s now gone two matches without a goal and the upcoming schedule – with matches on Saturday and Monday – suggests that Sturridge could well be due a start.

Firmino also deserves a mention here after ending a six-match man drought with the Reds’ second.

Having dropped 0.3 in price over the last two Gameweeks, the Brazilian’s strike and maximum bonus should be enough to ease the exodus. Furthermore, with Philippe Coutinho due back imminently, Firmino’s expected return to the “false nine” role should boost his points potential once more.

Owners should still be aware, however, that Firmino will appear in court to face drink drive charges on January 31 – the same day as the Reds are due to take on Chelsea in Gameweek 23.

Jon Walters
Partnered by Peter Crouch as Mark Hughes opted for a 3-5-2 at Anfield, the Potters midfielder grabbed a second goal in his last four appearances.

The versatile Walters has now started five of the last six Gameweeks at a time where the likes of Wilfried Bony seems to have fallen firmly out of favour at the bet365.

Granted, he’ll never be the most fashionable of Fantasy picks but, judging by Hughes’ recent teamsheets, the Irishman seems to have secured his role as a regular once again.

Erik Pieters
Stationed as a left wing-back at Anfield, the Dutchman’s assist for Stoke’s opener was his first set of attacking returns this season.

An upcoming trip to Chelsea will ensure we steer clear of the Potters right now but, beyond that, the 4.5-priced Pieters could appeal as the cheapest of their defenders. Hughes’ side then face a run of four home fixtures in six, allied with trips to Sunderland and West Brom.

In Decline

Sadio Mane
The wide man failed to build on last week’s winner at Everton and has scored just once in the last four Gameweeks.

With the Afric Cup of Nations just around the corner, Mane now has just two more matches before leaving for international duties, including the New Year’s Ever encounter against City.

Given that he’s also set to face Sunderland in Gameweek 20, many of his 21% FPL owners may be content to hold for now, though plenty have already opted for the exit door – only Theo Walcott and Gylfi Sigurdsson have earned more transfers out in midfield prior to Friday’s deadline.

Xherdan Shaqiri
The Swiss international has now warmed the Stoke bench from start to finish in each of the last two Gameweeks.

Surprisingly, Shaqiri’s fall from favour has also come at a time when Marko Arnautovic is suspended, with Hughes even turning to Ramadan Sobhi and the fit-again Ibrahim Afellay as substitutes at Anfield instead.

Typically a regular starter when fit for the Potters, it seems that the former Bayern man is no longer guaranteed minutes as Hughes continues to seek a solution in the final third.

Ah Gradel. Remember him? Swear people were trying to tell me hes a good option pre-season.

Howe attacking assets always a no go, so much rotation!

    Bottomed

    Foster (pick)
    Alonso McAuley Jones (Amat, Holebas)
    Sanchez Hazard Payet Siggy (Whelan)
    Ibra (c) Origi Costa

Any advice on this lot? 0itb 1ft
My concerns are Origi, the pick injury and the upcoming need to switch payet/siggy.

    Pickford Grant
    Alonso Walker Holebas McAuley Cedric
    Hazard Sanchez Zaha Firmino Sigurdsson
    Ibra Origi Anichebe

    What do I change first?
    1) Origi will be due to only come off the bench now Sturridge is fit
    2) Zaha going to AFCON
    3) Sigurdsson in a terrible team and fixtures about to tighten
    4) Pickford out for 2 months and Grant's loan due to finish

I also want Aguero in so was thinking:
    Origi --> Aguero,
    Walker --> Ake,
    Sigurdsson --> Philips
    Zaha --> Carrick

    This would solve problems 1, 2 and 3 but for a -12 (!!!!)

Wouldn't be so sure about Origi definitely starting on the bench from now on. He was subbed off as soon as the win was secure yesterday, implies to me that he was being saved for the next match.

      I don't see Sturridge starting.
No way would I lose Siggy for a hit, not this gw.

      Origi>Aguero (+)
      Walker>Ake (-)
      Sigurdsson>Philips (-)

Also, Carrick and Anichebe in the same team is not ideal.

I need an enabler to get Aguero though! I am open to suggestions. The only other way I can think of to get him is to sell either Ibra, Hazard or Sanchez and I do not fancy any of those sales.

Assuming Pickford is out for the foreseeable:

    A) Kane + Pickford -> Costa + Randolph (-4)?
    B) Kane -> Costa (field 10)
    C) Save FT (Kane vs wat), field 10, roll FT

A (-4) next GW gets me this:

    Pickford/Jak
    Alonso/Jones/Holeb/Smith/Amat
    Phillips/Alexis/Lallana/Siggy/MDR
    Kun/Costa/Ibra

Is the midfield too light? Obv GK is a problem, but can replace JP immediately for an extra hit.

  11. Swans Caretaker Manager Curtis' History
    SAY SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT
    • 10 Years
    9 years, 3 days ago

With Alan Curtis being named as Swansea caretaker manager for the third time*, in light of Bob Bradley’s sacking, I thought there might be some value in having a look at how he performed last time he stepped into this role. This was between 9th December 2015, following Garry Monk leaving the club, and 24th January when Francesco Guidolin took charge of his first game after his appointment on 18th January.

*the first time being when they were in what is now League Two in 2004, so not massively relevant.

    Man City (a) – 2-1 L - opponent league position before KO = 3

    West Ham (h) – 0-0 D - 6

    West Brom (h) – 1-0 W - 13

    Crystal Palace (a) – 0-0 D - 8

    Man Utd (a) – 2-1 D - 5

    Sunderland (h) – 2-4 D - 19

    Notes:

Scored 90th min equaliser and conceded an injury time goal to lose vs City
with Hammers made it third goalless draw in a row for them
Five game winless streak for WBA after Swans game
Palace game very dull according to many match reports
Rooney winner ends eight game winless-streak for Utd, Fabianski came up and missed header late on
2-1 up but down to 10 men after 40 mins vs Sunderland, dodgy pen and red

    Next fixtures:

    Bou h
    Palace a
    Arsenal h
    Liverpool a

Upcoming fixtures look quite unfavourable. Games against Bournmouth and Palace could be low scoring affairs. BOU have only scored 7 away goals this season and Big Sam teams are normally quite tight, whilst Curtis will be looking to make not conceding goals a priority. As such, Arsenal and Pool attacking assets may be able to produce as easily as they might have done vs Swansea under Bradley, if Curtis is still at the helm come mid-January.

Allen, Sinclair, Bony, Davies, Michu, Pablo Hernandez, Chico Shelvey, Ayew. They all was sold without finding suitable replacement and now selling Williams was nail to their coffin.
It`s not about manager but quality players, Swansea is going down like a stone and with van der Hoorn/Mawson as CBs gonna be conceding goals whoever is in charge.

That's why I like single games so much....in particular the last game of the week in a small mini league. And I do picks sometimes that are the opposite of my son to do it.

I can sit with my son (and brother sometimes) and you can pin point exactly what needs to happen. So not just cheering on Eriksen but cheering off Kane...or vice versa.

I quite like that Northern picks vs Southern picks thing that I nearly did with WR. Maybe he would do it now.

I'm not really bothered about OR, I just like having a strategy and seeing what I can do with it...or maybe not.

I used to have my "All the Belgians" team a few years ago that did well. I liked that.

    Kane to Costa for (-4):
    Yes or No?

    A) If he blanks?

    B) If he scores a penalty?

    C) If he scores a brace?

I'm on Yes, Yes & No.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

From gw23, would you prefer a double up on Liverpool or United?

    A) Lallana (+ Cout + Ibra)
    B) Pogba (+ Cout + Ibra)

MUN: HUL lei WAT mci BOU
LIV: CHE hul TOT lei ARS

Thinking Lallana is the better option still

Lallana comfortably the better fantasy option than Pog regardless of fixtures IMO

I don't think that it's that far apart with the fixtures. Straight up, yes. The saving grace is the tricky fixtures for Pool are now at home

If Zaha stays i can do...

Origi, Eriksen, KDB > Kun, Zaha, Lallana

    It would give me...

    Zaha - Sanchez - Hazard - Lallana
    Aguero - Ibra - Defoe

    Good trades (if he stays)?

Just seen the squad list. Zaha would have to be Phillips or Cabaye and I am not sure I fancy either.

Phillips out of those two. WBA have some good home fixtures coming up. Not much in this price range, just have to go for it.

Potential Wildcard Team (WBA, Boro, Everton, Palace, Soton all have very nice Fixtures)

    Courtois Hennessey

    Azpelicueta Bertrand Gibson Brunt Holgate

Sanchez Walcott Phillips Zaha* de Roon

    Ibrahimovic Costa Lukaku

*can afford Townsend if Zaha goes to ACON

    Thoughts?

Ward Dann Kelly Fryers according to the forums.
    Sán(c)hez locked in.

It's between Sanchez, Costa and Ibra for me. Boro are pretty solid. Costa could be good but doesn't haul too often.

Am I ok for the coming GW?

Pickford (await auto replace if he doesn't play.. don't think will get a cameo)
    Aké - Alonso - Pieters
    Hazard - Siggy - Alexis - Zaha
    Ibra - Carroll - Costa(c)

Bench: Cech - Ramirez - Friend - Holebas

Would like to start Friend, but his 1 pointer is killing me!

Anyone else using their Benchwanker chip this GW? I'm doing OK but I'm sure there's much better...

Jakupovic (0), Amat (0), Ake (0) and Costa (captain - 0) to be replaced by...

Pickford (3), Evans (2), Alonso (6) and Kane plus Ibra (vc +15).

That's 26 points plus Harry's return tonight which hopefully redress my 250k drop so far.

Really, really looking forward to tonight's recalculations! 😀
