Captain Poll – Gameweek 28

Due to the FA Cup quarter-finals taking place this weekend, our Gameweek 28 captain poll selection is limited to players from just eight teams.

Among this reduced group, assets from Liverpool and Everton, who both have favourable home ties, are expected to dominate.

It would be no surprise to see Romelu Lukaku (10.0) at the summit after the Belgian struck his 18th goal of the season against Spurs to become Everton’s most prolific Premier League scorer.

The Golden Boot contender, who is just one shy of current leader Harry Kane, collides with a West Brom defence that boasts a single clean sheet on the road and has shipped eight over their last four away outings.

With a goal and two assists in his last quartet of matches, Ross Barkley (7.1) offers a cheaper armband option amongst Ronald Koeman’s ranks. So, too, does Seamus Coleman (6.0), for those willing to take a risk on captaining a defender.

The right back’s blank against Spurs was the first time since Gameweek 19 that he has failed to deliver either defensive or attacking returns. This consistency is likely to mean he overshadows Leighton Baines (5.7), despite the latter’s spot-kick duties.

Burnley’s visit to Anfield will likely ensure that Liverpool’s midfield provides Lukaku’s main competition.

Sadio Mane’s (9.4) goal and assist at home to Arsenal on Saturday evening adds to an impressive record in front of his own fans – only Chelsea’s Eden Hazard can match the Senegal international’s eight home goals among FPL midfielders.

Seven strikes on home turf makes Roberto Firmino (8.4), who also scored and assisted against the Gunners, another strong option. Meanwhile, Philippe Coutinho’s (8.2) four close range efforts on Saturday, more than any other Reds player, makes him another to consider. The Brazilian has recorded six attempts on goal in both his previous two Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Swansea City’s continued renaissance under Paul Clement keeps their players in the frame for the captaincy when they drop in on Hull City this weekend.

With five goals in the Clement era, Fernando Llorente (6.4) is set to attract votes, along with set-piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.6). The Icelander has three strikes and five assists since the new manager took the helm, returning points in seven of his last eight Gameweek starts.

Llorente, who scored a fourth brace of the season against Burnley at the weekend, is currently the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 28, with more than 56,000 new owners since Saturday’s deadline.

Hull, under their new manager Marco Silva, are also undergoing something of a recovery, having beaten Liverpool and drawn against Manchester United since the Portuguese took charge ahead of Gameweek 21. However, with nine goals conceded over that time, the fragility of the Tigers defence is still evident.

West Ham’s visit to Bournemouth looks ripe for goals and, as a result, offers a raft of alternative captaincy candidates.

Over their last six matches, the Cherries have conceded 15 goals and failed to register a clean sheet, while the Hammers have been similarly poor, claiming a solitary clean sheet and shipping nine goals.

For Eddie Howe’s men, Josh King (5.4) looks to be the most secure route to points. The first choice penalty taker in the absence of long-term injury victim Callum Wilson, the Norwegian has scored an impressive five times in his last six Gameweeks – with a mere 3% ownership, he looks an intriguing differential candidate for this reduced Gameweek.

Among the most likely Hammers’ captaincy candidates are Andy Carroll (6.2), should he have recovered from a groin injury ahead of tonight’s clash with Chelsea at the London Stadium.

Michail Antonio (6.9), who is suspended for tonight’s Blues encounter and sits in 8.3% of FPL teams, is another valid option: he has scored eight goals and assisted another seven this term.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Wouldn't put Mane (BUR) ahead of him? WBA defence can be pretty stubborn away from home.

    Catching up ML leaders!

I often see posts on here about wether ML leaders can be caught if they are 'x' amount of points ahead. A lot say it's possible, some say it's not.

I've caught up a little with my ML leader recently so I decided to analyse his points against mine through the season to see how far in front of me he actually went and what I have managed to claw it back to.

His biggest lead on me was 141 points, this was only recently after GW23. 3 and a half game weeks have passed and I have now reduced this deficit to only 55 points. Hopefully Sergio triple captain can reduce this further on Wednesday too.

My rival is no mug either, he was no.1 in the entire world for a few weeks in November (interviewed by the FPL show) and still sits with a rank of 1,069. My rank is 9,494.

I think the main part of this is, unless it's a giant lead going into GW38 then most of the time a ML leader can be caught just by playing your own game and being patient. The chips, blanks and DGW's will always have big ups and downs that can be taken advantage of to catch huge ML leads.

So to those who feel that their chance of a ML win is over, keep the faith. I believe that even a 200 gap with the right planning and a little help from lady luck can be caught even now.

99 people out of 100 wont claw that back. In theory someone who is ranked 1m can still win the whole thing.

il say 200 points would be possible if its just one team you are chasing.

iv been top of ML +100 points now for months now but have lost a bit of my lead just due to couple unlucky captain picks, missed kanes hat-trick and i went for baines of coleman few weeks back. those wee changes can cost large points easily.

as im top holding my wc to big dgw will ensure i can win it.

I totally agree. I was 3 points behind my ml leader after being about 100 behind. Then I picked baines over Coleman and also didn't have kane. Now it's back up to 80. All of this has happened since kanes first hatty so it's definitely possible

Jonty is sitting pretty for 28. Particularly compared to Mark.

But how many points has Jonty sacrificed in the last 4 GWs by holding and holding GW28 duds .... for a GW with just FOUR games?

Not having a pop. I just think the two opposing GW28 strategies warrants a good debate.

The only sacrifice I could have made is Mane to Sane this week - which I declined to do. So far three pts up on that.

The bulk of my GWK 28 players are the cheap bench boys like Evans and Brunt or those like Coleman.

I could have transferred out Phillips for a hit for another cheap mid - but none really appeal in that price range.

Not sure I've sacrificed any points by hanging onto Siggy etc.

I avoided Kane because I captained him versus HULL and BUR and had Ibra this week as what I thought would be a good single gwk option.

It's fine to say now that Kane was a better option than Ibra - but before the weekend was that really the case?

Call me a traditionalist but I don't agree with putting Kane, Mane and Sane in the same team.
If they can't follow conventional pronunciation rules, they can't co-exist harmoniously. That's my motto.

You have to admit ... it is quite a contrast how you and Mark have approached 28.

My first reaction is that you would come out on top, but now I'm not so sure.

Having Evans, Carrol, Philips, Daniels, Stanislas et al ... it seems like an opportunity cost, hanging on to these players, waiting for a GW with only 4 games.

I still think you are overanalysing it as most of those players have been benched most weeks anyway. All I've done really is hang on to bench players that can come into GWK 28 and target good players with good fixtures before irrespective of GWK 28 - eg Coleman, Lukaku, Siggy, Mane...its these fellas that will define GWK 28. The bench fodder coming in will just be a bonus and increase the possibility of points - as in no player will get no points, whereas one player may get more.

If you look back at the fixtures Everton, WBA and Swa have had crackers - and in Everton and Swa's case will continue to have good fixtures.

Good point. GW 28 bench fodder is a great idea. But a lot of your GW28 bench fodder kept appearing in your starting 11. Less so for Mark.

It's a tough one. I've had a similar issue. And I'm not sure I would have done things any differently if I could go back and do it again.

Evans, Carroll, Phillips and even Stanislas were viable options over the last 4/5 GWs but for injuries!! All injuries were the press and managers always seemed to imply that were always close to coming back each GW.
A couple of major things changed strategies - that nobody seemed to foresee.
          1. Liverpool having a fixture GW28 (after losing at home to Lincoln)
          2. Man City having an early DGW - don't remember seeing that even suggested until last week.
          3. Ibra's performance & actions against Bournemouth. Leading to him probably missing 4 out of 5 GWs. Let's be honest would have been an even bigger GW27 captaincy leader if not for point 2.

Only 4 games next week is irrelevant really as if you have 11 players its 11 games to accrue points.

argument is WBA away at Everton doesn't scream enough pts to necessarily justify having 3 of them in a side to make 11 players (which many early planners had set themselves up with) particularly with their fixture switch GW29 onwards.

        Completely agree with this Jonty.

I have players like Siggy, King, Jaku, Olsson, Tom Carroll and Robertson.

These are a mixture between constant bench fodder or cheap viable options. It has had no detriment to my team over the weeks.

The other players such as Mane and Cout that I own are clearly good options with Liverpool improving their form. As are Everton players with the decent fixtures they have had.

I've had Kane, Ibra, Alonso etc. still along with these fillers so no damage done.

I think it's more about those with less players playing will still have a similar team set-up but with non playing "fillers" such as De Roon, Capoue, Stanilsals, Amat etc. when really i'm sure they would love the fillers that do play GW28 as it wouldn't change the rest of their team anyway.

Agree 100% and I have been planning for GW28 from the day the previous FA Cup round fixtures kept the PL teams apart.

Having already or building up a bench of nailed G28 players such as Jak, Funes-Mori, Smith, T Carroll, etc over the last month was easy and goes a long way to putting out 11 in GW28 with out weakening the non-bench team going forward to GW29.

Having an unexpected Liverpool fixture has made it even easier

I think with alot of these posts of yours its a case of 2+2 =5.

You said the other day that I had a poor November because I hacked my team up to get Sanchez in. No I had a poor November because despite good fixtures Ibra and Sanchez scored very poorly. Lots suffered with those pair too - but given their pedigree and fixtures I'd do the same all over again.

You're right. It's so tough to tell who will get the points week to week for Liverpool, can't justify another hit this week though so I will have to go one of the three. Wouldn't be shocked if Milner bags a pen and Lallana gets his first goal in months.

Ibra > Lukaku tonight if the ban is confirmed. This will leave me the following GW28 team with 1.7m ITB.

Would you guys take a hit to change Capoue or Pieters?

    Jaku

    Mane Siggy Phillips J. King

Lukaku's next 4 games out of 6 are at home, the 2 away ones are tricky but not impossible for him to score.
(WBA, HUL, liv, mun, LEI, BUR).

Definitely one to hold for the next 6 gameweeks?

    Appreciate your thoughts!

Scoring away to Spurs was a good thing. Much better defence than Pool and ManU so if he can do it @WHL I'd fancy him to score least one across the 2 away games before the fixtures come good again

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 28

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 11am tomorrow (Tuesday) and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 12noon by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

How does everyone think this Sanchez thing is going to play out? Still absolutely nailed on and giving 100% for the team (in other words the benching was a one off to teach him a lesson...point made?)

Expect him to start the next game.

Given that it's WBA (a) and Man City (h) after the blank I'll wait and see what happens. Get him back in GW31 v West Ham (h) potentially.

Think I'll worry about Kane first.

Hey folks, this is how I am lined up this week...

            No GK
            Baines Brunt
            Phillips Mane Siggy
            Llorente Lukaku Carroll

Grant Pickford Cedric Eriksen Allen Friend PvA

            -4 and 10.5 ITB.

Anything worth another -4 (or 8)? Assuming Carroll and Phillips both play. PvA and Allen need to go anyway but is it worth shifting them this week or wait until next?

I wanted Carroll for this Bournemouth fixture for ages, but I think it's now madness considering Carroll is coming back from injury and Swansea/Llorente obviously have the form and momentum

              A) Sterling >> 4.5m non blanker (affords Lukaku + Phillips >> Kane + Sanchez)
              or
              B) Sterling >> Mane (only affords Kane)

Not sure yet. Want Kane as well but if Kun does the business and looks good again at Monaco I'll be tempted to keep for Liverpool and Arsenal. Should be goals in those games.

Just a quick toe in the water:

Will have 9 with an FT, 10 with a -4, current team is:

              Heaton (Pickford)
              Baines Brunt (Amat Pieters Alonso)
              Phillips Firmino Siggy Fletcher (Sterling)
              Lukaku (Kane Aguero)

              1.5ITB

              A) Sterling > Mane
              B) Pieters > Coleman
              C) A and Aguero > Llorente/Carroll -4
              D) B and Aguero > Llorente
              E) Just Aguero > Llorente and keep Sterling (no Mane)

Just A for me. Aguero to Costa in 29. Or wait for Gabby in 30 but I wouldn't take a hit for Llorente or Carrol. Especially seeing as you have 9 players anyway. 10 if Amat gets a 1pointer.

People doubling up on Pool mids - not concerned they have noe DGW's? Will probably bind up an FT to get in DGW players down the line, so few matches to make up the hit

Burnley is the type of game they tend to struggle in as well. Not doubling up.

there could be but not where you will be able to have 11-15 DGW players. 34 might have 4 teams I think.

Sanchez + Kane still possible with cheapo 5th mid, but then you'd want Sanchez straight away anyway presumably, which makes the case for 2 Liverpool mids for GW28 hard to defend

That's the problem atm. Either Sterling to cheapo playing 5th + Sanchez next gw, or Mane and wait.

Couple of classic (slightly tongue in cheek) pieces of FFS behaviour going on at the moment:

                  1) People who are short of players for GW28 purely due to bad planning (i.e. they haven’t consciously left themselves shorter, like some legitimately have) blindly dismissing the idea that having lots of players for GW28 could work, purely because they are not in a position to have many players themselves.

                  2) People declaring “hindsight is a wonderful thing” when talking about the decision to get rid of Kane for a DGW player last week (Aguero), when 12 months ago the same people were saying what a bad decision it was in the get rid of Kane for the DGWers in GW34, and they wouldn’t make the same mistake again……

                    In regards to 1.

Plenty of people would have planned to only have 7-9 players for gw28. I never wanted more than that as I can't see more players than that from those teams that I'd like to own.

I can go into gw 28 with 9 players now and still have Alonso, Walker, Kane and Ibra going into 29 from my bench.

Re 1) yes it is, because (as I tried to make clear!) I'm not talking about people who have made conscious decisions how many GW28 players they are getting. I'm talking about those who have just plain planned badly.

I'm going to be short on players without taking hits.
Would have been okay but Liverpool having a game and Man City DGW changed things for me.
Brought in Sterling & Kun for Phillips and Lukaku. Going to cost me pts to rectify but still think it was worth it.
With Captain hindsight would have been Ibra to Kun and hold Lukaku. But Ibra at home to Bournemouth (as planned captain before Man City changed things) seemed a solid decision.

Sanchez to Mane still seems a decent decision with Liverpool home games coming up but again burned a FT. So would need a hit to bring up numbers for GW28 but Sterling to Firmino for GW28 and onwards for same reason as Mane transfer doesn't seem a bad decision for a hit.

Mane had 2 double hauls back to back and burnley cant defend away from home and with of mane pace they wont be able to defend

Burnley will sit deep and try to deny space in behind. Don't think it's a great fixture for Mane despite Burnley's poor away record.

                      I'm going Romelu.
