Scout Notes – Chelsea Held By Barca

A defensive error costs Chelsea a Champions League win against Barcelona as the Blues begin a season-defining run of fixtures.

As detailed in our recent Burning Question article, the jury is out on whether to sell or keep Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) most productive defender, Marcos Alonso.

Many managers have already made up their mind – the Spaniard is Gameweek 28’s most sold player, with 130,000+ moving him on – and one of the key reasons for that is his side’s brutal schedule.

That started last night with the first leg of their European tussle against Barcelona; a match which finished 1-1 to set up an intriguing return at Camp Nou in three weeks’ time.

The visitors’ away goal, from Lionel Messi, gave them the edge in the tie, but Chelsea will have been heartened by a disciplined display in which they took the lead when the excellent Willian found the net from an Eden Hazard pass.

The Brazilian also hit both posts as the Blues allowed Barca most of the possession, but precious few sights of goal.

Coach Antonio Conte made seven changes from the team that beat Hull City in the FA Cup at the weekend, with only Antonio Rudiger, Cesc Fabregas, Willian and Pedro retaining their places.

Alonso returned after a three-match absence in all competitions, but the manager’s biggest call was to keep both Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud on the bench, opting for a fluid front three in which Hazard was deployed as a false nine to flood the central areas and force Barca to attack down the flanks.

That move has tended to reduce the Belgian’s offensive threat this season, and so it proved again last night as he managed just two attempts on goal, neither of which were on target.

Post-match, Conte was quick to praise the front trio’s recent impact, with Willian’s displays lauded in particular.

“I think our three strikers played very well, they played a fantastic game. Willian played really well against Hull and scored twice. In the last three games we scored eight goals and six have come from Pedro, Willian and Hazard, they work very well together.

Willian has the potential to play this type of game in every game and I hope to see this for a long time. Against Hull he was fantastic, tonight he was fantastic and when you play in this way the coach doesn’t have any doubts about you playing.”

The worry for Hazard’s 8.2% FPL ownership (and, indeed, those holding Morata or Giroud) is that Conte could employ similar tactics again as the Blues travel to Man United on Sunday and then host Man City the week after.

A London derby with Crystal Palace, the return leg in Barcelona and a Gameweek 31 blank when they play an FA Cup quarter-final at Leicester City follow before March’s international break.

And when all that is done and dusted, Chelsea will still have the small matter of a Gameweek 32 visit from Spurs to contend with.

The major concern will surround that visit from Palace in Gameweek 30 – four days before the trip to the Nou Camp. Conte’s teamsheet for the Eagles visit will be difficult to call. While he is unlikely to risk resting key men at United or City, that would not be the case for the encounter with Roy Hodgson’s charges.

Sales of their most popular players, Cesar Azpilicueta (22%) and Alonso (20.8%), have been ongoing for the past six and two Gameweeks respectively and look set to continue.

But the Blues’ form has picked up since shock defeats to Bournemouth and Watford, and it took a loose pass from Andreas Christensen to hand Barca their equaliser last night. The young Dane has endured sales of his own in six of the last seven Gameweeks as a series of ill-timed injuries denied his FPL ownership clean sheet points.

Given their resilience against the La Liga leaders, many FPL owners could now consider sticking with the Blues’ defensive assets for Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford.

Chelsea have kept three clean sheets in the last five Gameweeks, while Man United have scored just three goals in four league matches as the balance of the side has been compromised by the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in the January transfer window.

Hazard owners will hope that Conte will opt for a more progressive side involving Morata or Giroud on Sunday as that would allow the Belgian to play in his most effective role as a free-roaming support for the lone striker.

FPL managers are clearly torn as to what to do with the midfielder at present.

He’s the team’s most bought player of Gameweek 28, with close to 20,000 new owners, while 22,000+ have also sold him on – behind only Alonso and Azpilicueta.

But with Man City and a blank Gameweek looming ever larger, the days of most Chelsea assets are surely numbered until their schedule turns kind again from Gameweek 33, with at least one double Gameweek to factor in as well.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Defensive changes

Whether free hitting, wildcarding or holding back your chips over the coming Gameweeks is it now time to refresh our backlines?

Tricky fixtures for City, Utd and Chelsea could mean the likes of Alonso and Otamendi are now surplus to requirements. But do they deserve a stay of execution?

Which defenders are you looking to ditch and why?

And which defenders are you looking to bring in and why?

      Largely depending on Jones fitness

It's a tough decision this week! Already sold Otamendi for VVD, I have Maguire in already and still have Alonso and Jones... 1 ft to go. I'm pondering a move for Daniels maybe with Jones out. But also have Pogba in midfield that I want to move... Alonso could be move as well but I'm in no need of cash as of now and could keep him for a couple more gameweeks before re-assessing the situation

I need some advice here too Jonty!

On the surface the WBROM and HUD fixtures look great over the next few weeks (and no Blank in GW31). I am considering Dawson/Hegazi and Zanka (or both) but given their well publicised difficulties (and lack of clean sheets) is this a vain pursuit of Fool's Gold...?!

This week I’m saying goodbye to Alonso and Otamendi and welcoming in Vertonghen and Ben Mee for his imminent goal.

I’ve held Joe Gomez for a long time and he’s a horrible issue now, I’m saving FH and don’t want a benched Liverpool player in 31. I’m likely to cross fingers he plays for next two (TAA to play Porto return leg?) and may swap him for Zanka for 30 & 31, letting me have Mane for the blank.

Be interested to know what other Gomez owners are thinking?

      Otamendi and Jones out.

Did Alonso to VVD before his price drop. Keeping Azpi as have too much TV in him, holdng Mee for similar reason. Have only 2 defenders and no GK for GW31 providing Femenia is fit by then. Plan is Ogbonna or Adrian to Shindler or Lossl as planning 3 strikers and 4 midfielders for GW31 and no hits.

I think most Alonso owners like me have him for his LM role so cleansheets arent of top priority. Benching him vs Manutd but will play vs CPL. Ota is out for VVD. Jones stays as except Bauer not many good defenders to bring in with Blank week in mind. Have Daniels but they are soo poor defensively....will keep him till blank as he has fixture in it

Ditching one of Alonso or Jones for VVD or Mee this week, then the other next week

Probably Mee IN this week as I think Pool will concede vs West Ham

Def will then be VVD, Maguire, Mee, Bauer and Dummett. Dont have FHC or WC anymore. Will see what I do with defs after 31.

I'm keen to try and work out the same, looking at a Leicester defender and was all set on Dragovic. I found this which sheds no light on the matter at all and makes the decision even more of a shot in the dark-

Yes thanks, I found that too. I found something else saying Dragovic has been good and with Morgan at 34, will he just automatically walk back in?

If Jones is fit which is the better option out of these?

    A) Alonso & Lingard ➡️ VVD & Walcott

    B) Otamendi & Lingard ➡️ Robertson & Walcott

Very similar dilemma, if Robertson plays the next 4 games he seems much better value than VVD. Then again VVD nailed on and great goal threat. Think VVD is the best option so A

Been so busy recently, totally lost touch.

    Any help would be grand, currently have ;

    DDG

    Laporte, Ogbonna, Jones
    BSilva, Hazard, Salah, Sterling, Milivojevic
    Vardy, Kane

    Elliot, Niasse, Kenny, Lascelles

I have 2 FT. 0ITB I was looking at getting shut of Hazard with his up coming games and freeing up some cash to use elsewhere. Thoughts?

Note: I see some say keep Haz, hmmm more confused now lol

I'd look at loosing Hazard and BSilva.
You will have some good options to choose from with those funds.

Need some help with this one.
I need to drop one of my midfield to raise funds for transfers 0.9m down
    Walcott - Sterling - Mkhi

    Who goes out for who?

Have shipped Aguero out for Kane so inclined to stick with Sterling?

If Jones falls before Friday and is also ruled out for the weekend on Friday I will be priced out of my preferred moves of getting Robertson & Walcott for Jones & Lingard.

Which other defender is worth getting for 4.7m?

Mahrez's fixtures are too good to ignore, regardless of the blank, but cant decide who i'm dumping, between A) Bernardo or B) Lingard. Both have been bad picks and done nothing for me!!

    2FT and 0.5ITB

    Courtois (Pereira)
Jones Otamendi Mee Gomez (Otamendi Bauer)
    Sterling Lingard Hazard Salah Choupo
    Kane Firmino (Quaner)

    A) Lingard+ Sterling >Mahrez+ Delofeu
    B) Lingard>Delofeu (Save 1 FT)
    C) Otamendi+Lingard> Vertonghen+Delofeu
    D) Otamendi+Lingard>Mariappa+Mahrez

I don’t think Everton or Stoke will do much in the next 2 away gameweeks.

Why so keen on deulofeu, hes such an inconsistent player and Watford are an inconsistent team, their gameweek 31 fixture is at Anfield and they travel to arsenal before that, not in ,ove with the guy to be honest myself

Agree: Better value in Doucoure imo at £5.4 for nailed on consistency plus an ocasional bonus goal - served me well early season!

    Morning all,

Think i'm still set on saving FH for GW 35 which means i need to use my transfers to build up my GW31 team.

Currently I have Wilson, Daniels, Salah, Walcott and then to a lesser extent Kenny & RLC.

The question is still whether to do Alonso > VVD this week or Aguero > Firmino?

I think the first is probably best with Firmino in next week, what do you think?

How much of a risk is it to go with Aguero over Kane until after BGW 31 when I will WC? Thinking of prioritising BGW 31 transfers in order to have 8-9 players

If I'm honest, I think the -4 on bringing in Kane will pay for itself between now and GW32. Lower rotation risk (read no rotation risk) and better fixtures

    A) Dawson
    B) Daniels
    C) Naughton/Fernandez
    D) Other up to 5.5

    Defence is:

    Pickford
    Alonso, Otamendi, Jones*, Robertson, Lowton

    Pope (Elliot)
    Ota Jones Mee (Francis Ogbonna)
    Salah Walcott Sterling Ox (McArthur)
    Firmino (K)ane Kun

    1FT £0.5 ITB

I was planning to carry the free over to next week then do the following for -4

Kun Ota and Ox -> Aubameyang VvD and Rambo

I would like to do Ota to VvD this week, but having the Ox has killed me (maxed out on Liverpool). Can't afford to do Ota and Ox to VvD and Rambo for a -4 this week (£0.2 short) and don't fancy the -8 this week. So basically, is it worth bringing in Robertson instead of VvD this week and gambling on Rambo playing?

    tl;dr
    a) Ota and Ox this week with VvD and Rambo going forwards
    b) Robertson and Rambo this week and going forwards
