Metrics – The Impact of the Gameweek 31 Free Hit

With the dust now settled, we can now look back and assess the effectiveness of the Fantasy Premier League Free Hit chip in Gameweek 31.

When it came to the reduced four-fixture schedule, many managers chose to plan and use transfers leading up to Saturday, fielding a nearly full squad without the use of the Free Hit.

Others thought it the perfect time to employ the chip, while a third group decided to ignore both solutions and just relied on the small number of players they could muster ahead of yesterday’s deadline.

We won’t be able to weigh up the full merits of these strategies until the season is over and, in particular, the Gameweek 35 Free Hits are played. However, we can compare the intermediate gains from the different approaches employed.

So, let’s present some of these results by trying to answer a list of questions.

Q1: How many extra points and ranks did a Free Hit team gain over non-Free Hitters in Gameweek 31?

SampleFH average pointsNo FH average pointsAverage FH points gainAverage FH rank jumpAverage no FH rank drop
Top 1k102.7682.8419.92434.17-157.15
Top 10k100.6181.0419.562729.12-1300.81
Top 100k100.0477.6522.3815948.45-12779.96

Looking at the table above, we can see that Free Hit teams scored, on average, around 20-22 more points than non-Free Hit sides, which appears to be a very decent gain.

Also, teams in the top 100,000 using Free Hit in in Gameweek 31 jumped up around 16,000 places, while those that didn’t suffered an average drop of 12.8k.

However, we know that many teams entered the Gameweek with a small number of players as they’d not planned for the reduced schedule, which caused Free Hitters to make up more ground.

But those managers who did plan leading up to Gameweek 31, suffered less damage to their rank, as indicated by the results in the table.

For example, I was able to field a full 11 players with no Free Hit chip played and achieved a score of 103 (-4) = 99. That was pretty much the same as the average Free Hit team (100.6 in the top 10k).

Am I a good representative for Gameweek 31 planners, or just an anomaly?

That leads me to the second question.

Q2: How many extra points did a Free Hit team gain over non Free Hitters who planned for Gameweek 31?

I took having eight or more players this week as an indicator of a manager planning for the blanks.

The chart below shows the average points gained by teams with eight or more players vs the Free Hit average (now focusing on the top 10k).

It is clear that a Free Hit team still gained around 18-20 points more than the managers who planned for Saturday’s matches.

Even those with 11 players couldn’t match the Free Hit average, mainly due to them fielding non-starters (Moritz Bauer, Oumar Niasse etc) or by taking late transfer hits to acquire nailed-on players.

So my team does look like an outlier, as Free Hitters still gained over planners.

However, that might not be the full picture…

There is a theory that players who planned for Gameweek 31 lost ground over recent Gameweeks as they were unable, or unwilling, to bring in the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Henrikh Mkhtaryan, Son Heung-min ahead of “mediocrity” from Stoke City and Everton.

Time, therefore, to test this theory and see if Free Hitters gained even more than the 20 point gap already discussed.

Q3: Did planning for Gameweek 31 cause more losses over the previous couple of Gameweeks?

To answer this question, I looked back at the past three Gameweeks (28-30) and calculated the points gained in that period for both the managers who activated their Free Hit in Gameweek 31, and those who didn’t.

As suggested by the figure, there is not that significant a statistical difference between “planners” and “Free Hitters”.

The advantage that Free Hitters might have gained is just an extra three points on average over the three Gameweeks.

Therefore, I am more inclined to say that planning for Gameweek 31 didn’t really hurt the average manager.

They might have missed some individual hauls from the likes of Son and Mahrez, but it appears that managers who used the chip and who were not distracted by Gameweek 31 signings also missed out on the bulk of these points.

The last couple of Gameweeks seemed rough, but the statistics suggest that they were rough on the majority of managers.

Q4: How much did a Free Hit team gain over the user’s original set-up?

I went back to all managers in the top 10k who used Free Hit this week and calculated how many points their original teams would have brought in.

I employed two assumptions – that they captained Salah and they would have used their Free Hit to get extra players.

It turns out the average score they would have managed was 80.53 points, so using the Free Hit chip led to a jump to 100.6 points – a gain of 20 (again) over their previous line-ups.

In summary, Fre Hitters gained around 20 points this week over the non-Free Hitters, over Gameweek 31 long-term planners and over their own original teams.

Numbers suggest that planning for Gameweek 31 cost three or so more points, making the net gain for Free Hit users around 23 points.

Finally, I’ll leave you with some statistics about the usage of chips in the new top 10k post-Gameweek 31 and about the point differences between ranks.

RankPointsDifference from above rank
120740
100199183
1k194150
5k190338
10k188419
20k186321
50k183231
100k180428
500k171787
1M165859

As you can see in the table, most ranks are not separated by a huge chasm of points.

For instance, the difference between 20k and 5k is currently just 40 points.

Also, among the current top 10k managers, over 69% have now used their Free Hit, while 47% have spent their second Wildcard.

That suggests that the remaining seven Gameweeks will see a big shift in rank as the effects of the double Gameweeks and the chips still to be employed shake things up once again.

All chips remaining. Does this tentative plan seem optimal?

    33 WC
    34 TC/BB
    35 FH
    37 TC/BB

I would probably BB in 34 as there's more DGW's to pick from and TC in 37 as Kane should be back by then and has tasty fixtures against West Brom and Brighton.

Yeah with the 34 BB we need 15
But we can get some fodder to allow the likes of Kane in for 37.
Would be a great plan if I still had TC left 🙂

I already wasted my TC on Kane DGW before lol. Not too bothered by it though, more gutted about not having a wildcard left

Snap on that TC use. I did no work that day I was following that dude in the hotel that met Kane. That lot of fun nearly made up for Kane's fail.

Sorry I meant 15 good picks. Usually 11-12 with dgw works. I will hold all 3 pool assets never mind Salah - going nowhere.

Currently on wildcard, keeping an eye on price change tendencies not to get left behind.
I've almost settled on the formation, 3-5-2, and most of the players:

    DeGea Maenpaa
    Alonso Otamendi Monreal Robertson Fernandez
    Salah Mahrez Willian Son Mkhitaryan
    Aubameyang Firmino Murray

This setup leaves me 0.6 itb.
I have second thoughts on not owning any MCI mids/fwds, but I'm afraid of their rotation and the fact they have many good players in those positions.
I was considering Lukaku but his price would need me to downgrade elsewhere, which I don't want, so I'm thinking if I should consider a MUN mid like Martial.
Son plays away to Chelsea in gw32. I could have DSilva there for that gw, then turn him to Son.
As for Ota, I plan to turn him to Davies right after gw32.

    What are your thoughts?

Thoughts are you won't want a triple ARS as we get closer to 37. That more transfers to plan for. Still don't trust Ars or Mkhi.
I want Davies but was told he is still a rotation risk especially for one of the 34 games.
I would just get Smalling for Ota and leave him there for double double. 33 fixture is bad but can't have everything.

Is any other gw that suit to play FreeHit? Feels a bit regret not played last week as only 4 fixtures that postponed in gw35 and we could easily field 8/9 player for that gameweek

FH fits great in gw35. Our teams will probably already have players from Chelsea, Tottenham, ManUtd, Leicester, who all blank in 35, so freehitting then can do wonders, then the blankers coming back in the team for the last 3 gameweeks.

Don't agree anyone on WC now or next week will stuff their team with players who have double double. Exactly the ones who won't play 35. Still seems the right strategy to me to hold FT. I am only down 10 points on FH average last week. Harder to factor the weeks before but if I had got Mahrez instead of Eriksen would not be down in those weeks either.

Similar structure to what I'm looking at. I'm going slightly more expensive in defence and attack and looking to have funds to get Kane in later so considering the likes of Albrighton/Gross/Lingard as a fourth mid.

Currently Auba, Firmino, Murray. Latter two would have to become Vardy and Ayew in GW34 to get Kane in afterwards.

I like the idea of Albrighton as an enabler for Hazard because they're both differentials.

Yep, I'd be happy with that. 2 good DGWs and I'm not enamoured with their defence at all. Maguire too expensive, better options than Schmeichel, the rest not secure enough and they leak goals a bit anyway.

Don't know. Suppose you could focus on the 34 dgwers that don't blank in 35 and then try to get some of the double double GW players in for 37
And have at least 3-5 double double player on your WC. Depends how many you want to get out in 35 I suppose. Tough one.

No not tired of it. Will scan these for 2 weeks looking for that diff no one else thought of and then copy it 🙂

That's very decent the defence a little weak but nice front 8.

I hope Pope keeps his place. Can you avoid the Burnely double up though? Anything ITB?

        Thanks for your feedback
0.3 ITB. I basically made this team up last night to get the price rises.
I've had the Burnley double up for months now, so there's some value locked in. Same with Firmino, therefore reluctant to get rid atm.
A bit concerned by no Man City though, but can't seem to fit anyone in

See your point on Firmino and Pope I have had bought for so long and don't want to lose either.
On City cover I will probably go Silva over Son for now. Not liking the fixtures before 34.

I'm on the same front but Mahrez instead of Mkhi because of form & fixtures.

Mahrez can be a good placeholder for Son too.

glad someone didnt tired scanning wc team.. any comment on this wc?

    Ryan / Fabs
    Mustafi / Valencia / Davies / VDH / Lowton
Mahrez / Willian / Salah / Silva / Grob (or Son)
    Firmino / Auba / Murray

    thougts?

Don't like Valencia personally, too expensive. Downgrade him and get DDG. Silva might miss a few games here and there. Sterling/Sane are better options.
Son should be a priority over Grob.

      cheers all above,

      my thoughts :
      - Ryan and Fabs have a good fixtures and DGW until end of the season
      - Agree with Valencia, how about Valencia and Mustafi to Alonso and Smalling?
      - Davies is my differential, he will have a double DGW and surely will play most of them..

If you are happy with the keepers then all good.
Like the proposed changes I would have Alonso Smalling Mustafi and Davies.
Have been told on here that Davies is too much of a rotation risk but I don't like losing him and he may not be rotated. Just the type of player to go mad in a dgw.

Coming round to the idea of a GW37 FH for those who have already burned their TC. Example plan below - any major flaws?

    GW32: WC to get:

    Ederson
    Alonso*, Bavies*, Monreal
    Salah, Sterling, Son*, Mkhi, Kennedy
    Aubameyang, Vardy*

    Fabianski, Ward, Chilwell*, J Ayew

This has 14DGWers + Salah in GW34 and just 5 blankers* in GW35, so use 2 of the 3FT from GW33-35 to get 11 out in GW35, e.g.:

    GW33: Save FT
GW34: 1FT to tweak for BB
    GW35: Alonso & Vardy -> Coleman & Firmino
GW36: Bring in a 3rd LIV player (Monreal -> VVD)
GW37: FH to get an optimal 11 DGWers

It can definitely work and nice to see another opinion.
The problem I have with it is no utd especially in defence where I will probably double up.
Another advantage here is that I might have a live for the next two weeks as you really only need to plan 34 dgw and not 37 as well 🙂

Yep, no United is a concern. I could go DDG instead of Ederson I guess. Jones (if fit) aside I’m not keen on any of their other defenders or mids and whilst Lukaku/Sanchez should do well I think they’re over priced.

Another benefit of the 37 FH is you can load the bench with 3.9s to really max out on an optimum 11. If FHing in 35 then you’ll likely still have a fairly strong bench from the 34 BB.

          Agree on utd.
If Jones is back I think Smalling plays with him but lots have Bailly in WC.
What you think or is that why you will avoid both of them?

The FH allows you change all 15 so no advantage there. I assume my 35 FH will have some cheap fodder too.

If Jones is back I think it’s likely there will be some rotation around the FA cup semi. 2 spots for Jones, Bailly & Smalling - even Rojo & Lindelof might get some minutes. It’s probably DDG or nobody for me.

My point about the 37 FH is that when we WC now we are likely to have a decent bench to make best use of the BB in 34 - this means the value is spread across our 15 man squad. By FHing in 37 you can allocate all funds to the starting 11 - FHing in 35 does give you the same in 35, but crucially there are less premium teams to choose from that week with a lot blanking.

Nice, planning for 37 now is tricky and a whole heap of those players may well be injured and out of form by 37. Your FH in 37 is effectively a brand new team of 11 DGW players and you are not reliant on your WC pick now to guess teams in 37.

Yeah this too. You’d have to be pretty fortunate to pick a WC squad now that not only nails the 34 BB but also nails the 37 DGW. 6 GWs to navigate injuries, form shifts and team incentives (relegation, top 4 battles etc) between now & 37

How do you rate this wc team . What improvements would you suggest

    DDG (Fabianski)
    Baily Alonso Ward Naughton Mariappa
    Salah Mahrez Sterling Mkhi Stanislas
    Auba Firmino Barnes

Once the Spurs Chelsea game is over i plan to get willian and son for Stanislas and Mkhi (or may be for sterling keeping mkhi)

In response to the article above, I managed 93 points from just seven players and rose 300k.

The more favourable fixtures of 35 will see those who played their FH in 31 drop a lot further in rank.

Indeed. 90 from 8 here, most short handed players had most of Salah capt, Friminio, Mane or Vvd, Stanilas and some Ibe, so 7 or 8 players was fine. Some even had some Walcott, Milo and Daniles in place.
Sure a few FH people maybe had Tousun but he was really the only other to score decent?

Thanks for help so far. Now got to this-

    DDG/ Fabianski
    Chilwell/ Fernadez/ Christensen/ Lowton/ 3.9!!!
    Son/ Sliva/ Willian/ Salah/ Marhez
    Lukaku/ Aubam/ Barnes
    exact cash.

So close but a 3.9 def obv doesnt fly, any ideas?

    Only idea I have is
    3.9 def to Smalling
DDG to Mc Carthy SOT (4.4 for Gk)

    Good idea?
Any way you see for me to keep DDG?

      - not a fan of Chilwell

        Thanks
        - Chilwell agree but no cash
        - fernadez and VDH same price (bought Fernadez at 4.4)
        - 3.9 def to Smalling leaves 4.4 for keeper! .1 off Ryan and feel need some MU def

        Thanks for input

The problem is that King will never play when I have 3 top attacker and 4 top midfielders. And I will start Lowton-Christensen-Mustafi for all GWs. And I think it’s not that bad defense

    de Gea (Fabs)
    Alonso, Mustafi, Morgan, Lowton, Fernandez
    Salah, Ramsey, Son, Mahrez, Willan
