The Watchlist Updated – Goalkeepers

Following on from yesterday’s confirmation of Double Gameweek 34 for eight teams, we have now re-assessed our Watchlist rankings.

For those unfamiliar, the Watchlist offers mid-term player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks and beyond. They can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

These highlight our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Our analysis gets underway with a look at the main contenders in our latest goalkeeper standings.

The top scoring keeper in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), David De Gea offers a fire and forget option between the posts for Wildcarders looking to take advantage of the run-in.

Despite a run of one clean sheet and three save points in his last six, the Man United stopper remains a key figure when assessing Jose Mourinho’s defence. Man United host Swansea City this weekend, while a Double Gameweek 34 consists of a home match with West Brom and visit to Bournemouth.

Although a trip to neighbours Man City in Gameweek 33 and blank Gameweek 35 dents his allure somewhat, the Red Devils are also expected to play twice in Gameweek 37.

If the fixtures drop in as expected, this would leave De Gea with home matches against Arsenal and Watford on either side of a pair of Gameweek 37 trips to Brighton and West Ham.

Owned by over 43%, he is the third most popular player in the FPL game and has averaged 4.8 points per match – just behind team-mate Antonio Valencia (4.9), who is more taxing on the budget by 6.9 to 5.9.

Along with Man United, we anticipate that Brighton, Leicester, Chelsea, Spurs and Southampton will all play twice in Gameweek 34 and 37.

With that in mind, Brighton’s Matt Ryan climbs to second in our assessment.

Coming in at just 4.5, he is 33 points clear of any defensive team-mate and is set for three home matches (LEI HUD TOT) and a trip to Crystal Palace in the next three Gameweeks alone.

Given that the Seagulls’ expected Double Gameweeks will consist of encounters with Crystal Palace and Spurs and ties with both Manchester clubs expected in Gameweek 37, save points may well be the main output from the Australian.

Nonetheless, Chris Hughton’s side have the motivation to grind out an unlikely shut-out, while even without those points, Ryan provides suitable back-up to De Gea in a Bench Boost squad.

Kasper Schmeichel’s average of 3.5 ppm is more than any Leicester City defender ahead of a kind run of matches.

In terms of single Gameweeks, Claude Puel’s side still have to face the likes of Brighton, Newcastle (32-33) and Crystal Palace (36), while Double Gameweek 34 (bur SOU) and the expected pair of Gameweek 37 matches (WHU ARS) would afford them three home fixtures.

However, at a cost of 5.0, the Dane’s appeal is somewhat dented by cheaper options in the Foxes’ defence. Ben Chilwell (4.3) has been named on the teamsheet in seven of the last eight Gameweeks, while captain Wes Morgan (4.4) has started each of the last three since recovering from injury.

Southampton’s Alex McCarthy is currently the cheapest starting keeper with an expected pair of Double Gameweeks still to follow.

Having started the Saints’ final ten league matches under Mauricio Pellegrino, McCarthy (4.4) retained his role for Mark Hughes’ first match in charge, the 2-0 FA Cup win over Wigan Athletic last weekend.

Nonetheless, with one clean sheet and a single save point in his last nine, there could yet be competition from the Saints’ previous number one, Fraser Forster (4.6).

The immediate fixtures are somewhat mixed for the St Mary’s side, though, with a trip to Arsenal preceding a testing Double Gameweek 34 (CHE lei). Once their blank Gameweek 35 has passed, though, Southampton entertain Bournemouth before an expected Double Gameweek 37 (eve swa).

With two goals and a significant threat in the opposition box, however, Jack Stephens – at just 4.5 – could be the optimum route into their defence.

Thibaut Courtois and Hugo Lloris are the premium alternatives to De Gea between the posts, with Doubles in Gameweek 34 and 37 anticipated.

Both go head-to-head at Stamford Bridge in Gameweek 32 and also have a blank Gameweek 35 to factor in.

Around that, Courtois (WHU sot & bur swa LIV new) has some strong matches, with a visit from Huddersfield expected to complement the home clash with Liverpool in Double Gameweek 37.

Yet Marcos Alonso’s potential for points at both ends of the pitch means he remains our preferred Chelsea option at the back for the run-in.

Meanwhile, Lloris still has the likes of Stoke, Brighton, Watford, West Brom, Newcastle and Leicester to face, though a visit from Man City as part of his Double Gameweek 34 lessens the appeal.

Swansea City custodian Lukasz Fabianski and Newcastle’s winter arrival Martin Dubravka remain lower down in the rankings, though will be among the main climbers once Double Gameweek 34 has passed.

Along with Man City, Arsenal and West Ham, the Swans and Magpies are two of just five teams who will play in both Gameweek 35 and the expected Double Gameweek 37.

Swansea play West Brom and Everton prior to Gameweek 35, while their final two Gameweeks should consist of a trip to Bournemouth and home matches against Southampton and Stoke.

However, they also have trips to both Manchester clubs and a visit from Chelsea to offset that somewhat.

Costing just 4.7, Fabianski’s penchant for save points has earned him an average of 4.1 ppm, though Mike van der Hoorn, at 4.4, offers a cheaper route into their five-man backline.

Dubravka has kept two clean sheets in four (including at home to Man United) since cementing a role in the XI.

Yet five of the Magpies’ remaining eight matches are against top-nine teams, leaving them with home clashes against Huddersfield and West Brom, along with a trip to Watford, as the likeliest source of defensive returns.

That Hornets match is part of an expected Double Gameweek 37 which would also include a trip to Spurs, which hardly helps Dubravka’s case for those considering a Bench Boost in the penultimate round of fixtures.

    Pretty template wc, any changes?

    Ryan McCarthy
    Alonso Smalling Ward Tarkowski Chilwell
    Mahrez Son Salah Silva Groß
    Aubameyang Firmino Barnes

Auba silva to willian kaku probably for the double.

How's this then? Aub out for Vardy for DGW 34 and then straight back in again with the FH.

    DDG - Fab
    Mustafi - Christensen - Smalling - Lowton - Morgan
    Salah - Willian - Mahrez - Son - Kenedy
    Aub - Lukaku - Murray

Any glaring errors or other options? 0.5 left, thanks.

Same strategy, Auba becomes Vardy or Kane for BB34, then back on FH35

I’ve gone Ryan, Alonso, Mee, Gross, Barnes over your Fab, Smalling, Mustafi, Kenedy, Murray

What's the most bench points you've had so far this season? GWs 2, 3 and 4 I had 18, 12 and 11 respectively. I vaguely revered having alot of bench points at the beginning of last season too.

I'm starting to worry how blinded we all are by the these double gameweek fixtures. I'm currently on a WC and looking at my team, it almost suits it better to WC in 33 as opposed to 34.

My bench will be as follows for 33 vs 34

    - Fabianski (wba 33) vs (EVE 34)
    - VDH (same as Fab)
    - Lowton (wat 33) vs (LEI CHE 34)
    &
Murray (HUD 33) vs (cpl mci 34)
    OR
    Gudmundsson (same as Lowton)

I don't feel like double gw34 would score more if not the same as gw33 for my BB.

Those weren't DGWs so youd hope to have at least a couple of players playing twice.
I think BB is worth 15-25 extra unless you totally load up on DGW players or are very unlucky.
TC was worth 20-25 last 2 seasons with Kane and Sanchez but Kane be as low as 3 as early users found out this season.
I agree people can get carried away with getting in DGW players.
Most teams I'm seeing on here have zero City and few if any Arsenal. Both could well score a lot before people plan to put them back in. Plenty of the players I see in people's teams will be lucky to score 8-10 before GW35.
I'd make sure you're starting 11 is top drawer and at least 12 of your players play twice by using your FTs.
Gudmonson may play twice but he'll be lucky to score more than 5.

Not sure yet, haven’t worked it out. All a bit complicated.

          Either WC 33 or 36 and BB/TC in 34 or 37, that’s all I know so far.

DDG? United have kept 1 CS in 6 and both those fixtures are likely to be away from home.

Maybe Cech in the good old Mourinho days for a near guaranteed 36 points but otherwise that's crazy talk.

    FH question:

Is it possible to play a FH as well as make normal changes to your team?

For example, buy a player before 35 for 36,37,38 fixtures, but then play FH in 35?

I think Vardy will troll. Maybe a goal but ain't getting a double digit score in a game.
No City or Arsenal could cost you. Surely Mkhi over Son to start then transfer in 34. 2 plum fixtures at home. Don't see Willian tearing it up either and double United def with City coming up is risky too.

Exactly, 12 teams with dgw the cant all be on the beach. And if we suspect a team will be on holiday for gw37 its easy to target a team the play against, right? Wouldnt see it as a negative thing.

Just playing around with potential wildcard for this strategy - by no means refined, but it doesn't look bad at all for the run-in. I guess the trick is pre-empting which players will have something to play for still.

Have limited City to Sterling - if they are truly on the beach by then, can be downgraded in order to bring Kane in.

          DDG, Fabianski
          Mustafi, Robertson, Morgan, Fernandez, Dummett
          Salah, Mhiki, Mahrez, Sterling, Arnie
          Aubameyang, Firmino, Gayle

Good team. The cheap enablers are better in this gw, i prefer Arnie over Gross/Willian/Gudmundsen, Dummet/Swans def over soton/leicester. And also auba over Kaku.

This is really exciting stuff for me - especially as it goes against the current consensus.

Even if it doesn't pay off, the players look more fun to own than the current template.

Is it time to sell Kiko? Got 2pts from him in 15 x GWs, one point of which I benched.

Not sure he can sustain such pts/min so might need to get rid?

Keep him. If he gets his place back in the side he might do ok. If after a few games he still hasn't done anything then have a rethink and maybe ask again then.

        So you’re saying he’s a season keeper?

Not sure. He was OOP for a bit I think, playing on the wing. I don't think he's ever played in goal though.

I spoke to a Watford fan about this and he said that Kiko is preferred to Janmaat at RB, while he also plays as RW with Deulofeu out. He told me that he's nailed on until Deulofeu is back (no idea when that is) at least. I've brought him in because he's a great enabler at 4.3 and potentially OOP and his fixtures are amongst the best even without a DGW.

      Tips for today.
      - Willian is one bad game away from being benched.
      - Maguire is on 8 yellow cards.
      - Don't sacrifice short term points to accommodate DGW players.
      - Clean sheets points are easier than goal/assist points. Vertonghen will probably outscore most 6m mids and strikers.

As I have already used my FH chip (correctly a drunken -12 hit for an injured Kane early in the season), I thought I would check the damage for the upcoming DGW/BGW plans.

I am on my WC and my current plan is to BB GW34 and TC GW37, this is due to having more DGW players in GW34 and wanting to TC either Kane or Aguero in GW37.

The GW34 team I am looking at is:

      DDG - Ryan
      Monreal - Alonso - Bailey - Lowton - Tarkowski
      Salah - Willian - Mahrez - Son - Gudmundsson
      Aub - Vardy - Murray

This would give me 12 DGW in GW34 with BB played.

Salah, Aub and Monreal still have good games and more importantly play in GW35. I will be aiming to roll a transfer so that in GW35 I could take a -8 (only hit for all the DGW) and the field 9 players, bringing in Ederson, Ayew and Naughten to go with my 3 Burnley and the aforementioned 3.

In GW36 I will get Kane back if he is alive (Aguero if not) in preparation for GW37, have an extra transfer in GW37 for emergencies or to roll into GW38

The GW37 team I am looking at is:

      Ederson
      Monreal - Alonso - Bailey
      Salah - Willian - Mahrez - Son
      Kane/Aguero - Vardy - Ayew

      Bench: Ryan, Gudmundsson, Lowton, Tarkowski

This would give me 10 DGW in GW37 with TC on Kane/Aguero.

So, apart from the obvious over planning aspect! Any obvious issues with the plan and the players selected that you can see?

      Quick overview

I don't have the chips most people have...
I have WC and BB only
I am 50+ points clear in all my MLs
      I have £0.9m

      I have this lot.

      Courtois/ Adrian
      Alonso/ Chilwell/ Vertongen/ Robertson/ Daniels
      Salah/ Willian/ Sterling/ Lingard/ Tarroll
      Auba/ Vardy/ Firm

What would your strategy be on timings for chips? WC36, BB 37?

Been trying to work out a way to get Hazard in for ages and I think you've found the perfect balance there. The only downside is no Mahrez however Vardy could hopefully be enough

Always been a bit unsure of double Leicester attack as they don’t score that many goals for the price. The scenario is really:
              Mahrez + Willian
Or Hazard + fodder. Hazard could be a huge Captain differential

Yeah, first one is very template and second one is a huge differential.

I'm (currently) in agreement! Gone 352 and hazard over an expensive third striker atm. So mahrez, willian, salah, son, hazard, firmino, vardy front line. Firmino+hazard>kane+2nd ddg mid works too I think once kane is back

Coming around to the idea of having Auba and Mustafi for the next two then switching to Vardy and Alonso for GW34. Is it going to be worth the two FT tho or will I probably have other issues to address?

I think for me the max amount of transfers I will account for is 1 maybe for Auba > Kaku. Can’t take any chances otherwise especially for a BB 34. Need to be ready for anything

      DDG Ryan

      Lowton Tarkowski Alonso Mustafi Dummett

      Son Mahrez Salah Willian Gross

      Aubameyang Firmino Barnes

      Any advice?

Great read, thank you for that!

      DDG, Ryan
Bailly, Mariappa, S. Ward, Alonso, Morgan
      Mahrez, Salah, Gross, Sterling, Gudmondsson
      Barnes, Auba, Vardy

      GW33: Sterling -> Willian.
      GW34: Auba -> Lukaku/Kane and BB.
      GW 35: FH.
      GW 37: TC.

      My squad on WC now:

      0.0 IDB
      Lloris, Hennessey
      Monreal, Tarkowski, Christensen, Robertson, Mariappa
      Salah, Mahrez, Son, Wilian, DSilva
      Firmino, Auba, Barnes

      I am thinking to do Firmino+DSilva -> Lukaku+Gross
Don't want to loose Firmino but Lukaku has 4 easy doubles.
      What to do?
