Suspensions

Which FPL players are nearing a suspension?

Those who keep an eye on our Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Fantasy Premier League players – and indeed have already resulted in a suspension for one FPL favourite.

Jose Holebas (£4.9m) became the first Premier League player of 2018/19 to accumulate five yellow cards and will now miss Watford’s trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers in Gameweek 9 a result.

The occasion of the Greek left-back’s suspension and that it’s the international break seems a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

With the yellow card amnesty not until after the completion of Gameweek 19 (after which the threshold moves up to ten yellow cards), then those FPL players already sitting on three and especially four cautions have a long way to go before they are in the clear.

For ease of reading, only the players highlighted in bold below are the ones walking the disciplinary tightrope.

Currently Banned

Holebas has worryingly reached the “magic” five yellow card mark quicker than he did in 2016/17, when the veteran full-back went on to rack up 14 cautions in just 33 appearances.

The Watford left-back’s five bookings have come from just ten fouls but are illustrative of his tendency to take drastic measures when caught out of position after bombing forward.

As well as Holebas, Watford have another player unavailable for the trip to Molineux.

Christian Kabasele (£4.5m) was dismissed after collecting two yellow cards in the 4-0 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday and will now serve a one-match suspension in Gameweek 9.

The absence of Kabasele and Holebas could mean promotions off the bench for Adrian Mariappa and Adam Masina (both £4.3m) at centre-half and left-back respectively, though the Hornets are well-stocked for defenders and could even drop midfielders Etienne Capoue (£5.0m) or Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.5m) into the backline.

Cardiff City are currently appealing Joe Ralls‘ (£4.8m) controversial dismissal for serious foul play in the 1-0 defeat to Spurs, but if unsuccessful, Victor Camarasa (£4.5m) could move back into the centre of midfield for the three fixtures in which Ralls is suspended. Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m) is nearing a return to fitness and could also step in.

Finally, Wes Morgan (£4.5m) will sit out Leicester City’s next two fixtures after picking up his second red card of the season in the defeat to Everton on Saturday. Jonny Evans (£4.9m) looks to be the likely beneficiary, though Caglar Soyuncu (£5.0m) is an alternative.

On Four Yellow Cards

Three players are on four yellow cards, though only one of them will likely be of any interest to FPL managers. Central midfielders Etienne Capoue (£5.0m) and Harry Arter (£4.9m) are both owned by less than 0.5% of Fantasy bosses, but another caution for either player would result in a ban and be a big blow to their respective clubs following their early-season performances.

Zanka (£4.5m), however, is owned by over 230,000 FPL managers and those Fantasy bosses who are sitting on the Danish centre-half for Huddersfield Town’s forthcoming run of good fixtures between Gameweeks 10 and 15 (one of the best in the league on our Season Ticker) will be hoping the towering stopper can dodge another caution over the coming weeks.

Only one FPL defender has committed more fouls than Zanka this season, however.

On Three Yellow Cards

There are 18 FPL players sat on three cautions which, although still two yellow cards from a suspension, doesn’t leave them with a lot of leeway considering the cut-off date for a one-match suspension is after Boxing Day.

Defenders

There are several high-profile FPL assets among the seven defenders on three yellow cards. Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.2m), Harry Maguire (£5.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.1m), owned by 21.1%, 15.7% and 10% of Fantasy bosses at the time of writing, are currently sat on three yellow cards and while that fact is unlikely to prompt mass sales among existing owners, it is something to consider for those FPL managers who are contemplating a move for one of the above trio.

Maguire’s Leicester City indeed top our Season Ticker from Gameweek 10 onwards, while there will be plenty of interest in Liverpool’s watertight defence (five clean sheets in eight matches) and Alexander-Arnold with the Reds’ fixtures turning for the better after the October international break.

Matthew Lowton (£4.8m), Sokratis Papasthopolous (£5.2) and Southampton wing-backs Ryan Bertrand (£4.9m) and Cedric Soares (£4.4m) complete the septet of sinning stoppers.

Midfielders

There are nine midfielders who are just two bookings away from suspension, but there are few Fantasy bosses who will be affected.

Central midfielders Granit Xhaka (£5.3m), Philip Billing (£4.5m), Mario Lemina (£5.0m), Dale Stephens (£4.4m), Dan Gosling (£4.9m), Jefferson Lerma (£4.5m) and Oriel Romeu (£4.4m) are amongst the group, with any high ownership (Stephens is the most popular, sitting in 5.4% of squads) likely to be for their budget price tag and suitability as “bench fodder”.

Having racked up eight assists in 2017/18 and proven that he is a threat at direct free-kick situations this season, Xhaka is a cut above the other budget buys listed above.

Any worried owners should be slightly reassured after the elevation to the first team of Lucas Torreira (£4.9m), who has helped unburden the Swiss midfielder from some of his defensive workload. After ten fouls and three yellow cards in the first four league fixtures of the season, Xhaka has committed only four offences and stayed out of the referee’s notebook completely in the last four Gameweeks.

Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m), meanwhile, has lost his place in the West Ham midfield in recent weeks and is only owned by 0.1% of FPL managers in any event.

Matt Ritchie (£5.9m) also has limited appeal from a Fantasy perspective but his Newcastle side are about to embark on an excellent run of fixtures in which they play none of the “big six” in the coming ten Gameweeks.

The Scotland international has a hat-trick of yellow cards to his name, however, and only three midfielders have committed more fouls than him this season.

Forwards

There are only two strikers on three yellow cards but both feature in the top five of most-owned FPL forwards: Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m).

Zaha’s three yellow cards have damaged his score on the Bonus Points System this season as they have all come in fixtures in which he has scored.

With five tough matches coming up (Palace sit bottom of our Season Ticker), Zaha is currently the most-sold forward of Gameweek 9 and it will be interesting to see if he collects a fourth yellow card during this daunting period of matches – that would perhaps deter investors for when the Eagles’ fixtures turn for the better in Gameweek 14.

Kane’s booking against Cardiff City on Saturday came in the incident that led to Joe Ralls’ dismissal, while his two previous cautions against Newcastle and Manchester United were for bad fouls.

While his current yellow card count won’t be too big of a concern just yet for existing owners, a fourth yellow card picked up over the next six fixtures would certainly influence the FPL market ahead of Spurs’ excellent run of matches from Gameweek 15-21.

Most Fouls

Below are position-by-position tables of the FPL players who have committed the most fouls in the league this season, highlighting the repeat offenders who are perhaps likeliest to pick up cautions going forward and cost their owners points or hamper their scores on the Bonus Points System.

This wc team feels really good imo. Defence might be a little weak but still think it's ok. What do you think?

    Alisson 4.0
    Doherty Duffy TAA Zabaleta AWB
    Hazard Salah Sterling Richi Murphy
    Agüero Arnie Jimenez

Maybe downgrade Salah to Mané and invest in defence.

Has there been any news on TAA after getting benched for Gomez? Zaba is sneaky pick at 4.3 but don't be upset when he racks up a bunch of yellows.

Looks great. What you lose at the back you more than make up for elsewhere. Don't think I've seen another team with Salah, Hazard, Aguero and Sterling.

No good midfielders at 5.9 or less imo. Also, Hojbjerg has decent value for his next two fixtures. Mitrovic has amazing fixtures in his next three, I see way more value there than Jimenez who doesn't have the best fixtures in next four. I think I gain more by keeping 1 FT and try to make upgrades later on instead.

They are decent options. However, Brooks is not nailed on with Stanislas coming back I and can't get Milner with 3 Liverpool players already in my team. Also, I don't think there's more value in Jimenez+Knock/Shurrle than Mitrovic+Hojbjerg+1FT short term. Do you disagree?

Would I take Mitrovic out for Jimenez? Not likely. But your current bench could eventually cause problems should the injury or suspension bug hit some players.

I'm personally not interested in the 2pt bench player

you're probably right. but it's difficult to have Kane, Kun, and Salah. Kun seems like he'll always be dragged off early, especially if City go up early on. Salah's time is starting to become questionable. But Kane seems nailed for 90 no matter the score.

          He's not right though

Hazard and Sterling are matching him at a canter.

The much maligned Kane is just 5 points off him despie spending most of his time in the center circle.

It's just not that scary. That elusive 'big haul' is being matched by week on week scores from other players outperforming him

Except while you're getting 6 points every week betting on it, other players are outscoring him by 2-3 points, doubled, banking those points so that when that hatrick does come, it's too late

            Since Aguero's 20

            Hazard 66 (132)
            Sterling 43 (83)
            Aguero 30 (60)

So exactly how much damage will the next hatrick do. He'd need a 13 and for Sterling to pull a 1 pointer even to pass him by 1 point. And what is the likelihood that Sterling blanks in a hatrick game? Virtually zero.

If you were head to head against someone (C)ing Hazard then your hatrick is a drop in the ocean. And Aguero has played all the awful teams in that run of 30 points.

Chasing hauls CAN be a folly.

The fear people have is that you can't go to him for the (C) for when he has that prime fixture.

The question is how easy are they to predict. Because he's be captained week after week when others have outscored him.

I would keep AWB if you got at 4m, having a 4m defender that plays and gets baps is worth keeping. You could do TAA to Mendy so you have pool and city defence options.

I was thinking that actually thanks that’s a good idea! TAA seemed like good value prior to being benched for Gomez, so seems sensible to do that move instead. Would you get Mendy in for Burnley?

TAA could start in the easier games, it might just be top 6 sides he is benched for. But robbo the better option i think and I am not a fan of double up of defence, great if it works out but a lot of points gone as soon as CS wiped. Yeah for a FT mendy in for TAA sounds good, closer to the deadline of course.

Hi Everyone , any advice on what to do this weeks want to get Holebas out now due to that suspension, not sure to swap Mendy back in for Walker and have a problem with Lucas Moura who I should proabably switch for Richarlson or Maddison.

      Pat / Hart
      Alonso / Robertson/ Walker/ Steve Cook/ Holebas
      Hazard/ Mane/ Fraser/ Lucas Moura/ Billing (Huddersfield 4.5)
      Aguero/ Wilson/ Mitro

2 free transfers and only 0.1 ITB
      Any ideas?

Lots of people give out about the IB citing boredom and the risk of their players getting injured as just some of the reasons.

Personally i love watching international football and getting a look at players that i don't see every week in the PL and it is also a great way to scout players in the PL that are playing without worrying about not owning them and losing out on fpl points.

In my opinion if you are not interested in some of the fixtures listed below then you are just not that into football.

        Poland vs Portugal
        Belgium vs Switzerland
        Croatia vs England
        Netherlands vs Germany
        Ireland vs Denmark
        Poland vs Italy
        Russia vs Turkey
        Spain vs England
        France vs Germany
        Ireland vs Wales
        Belgium vs Netherlands
        Brazil vs Argentina
        Peru vs Chile

Maybe if there was some kind of International fixture fantasy game it would help calm managers cravings for fpl during these breaks?

      GKP: Foster (Hamer)
DEF: Robertson, Doherty, Alonso, Mendy (Wan-Bissaka)
MID: Salah, Fraser, Hazard, Richarlison (Maddison)
      FWD: Jiménez, Agüero (Ings)

      Some early thoughts:
Foster > Fab (spurs at home) / 4.5 GK

      Kane Kun King

      A: Stephens/Kane >> Hazard (UTD) /Jiminez (-4)

      C: Shaw >> Chilwell/Morrison and WC in gw10 to bring in hazard,arnie,mitro.

Scoring more points makes someone a better captain option. When you double the extra points, the extra points become twice as extra!

It so easy to be reactive and jump on the inform players bandwagon. I have been lucky up to now as my team has been pretty template since gw1.

But after scouring form etc looking for differentials/watchlist I am getting increasingly drawn to 1.5% Iheanacho..

Even with depleted game time he keeps coming up with the attacking returns, he always has had an eye for goal but now he looks more of a team player and think Puel is going to have to give him more minutes.
With a good run of fixtures on the way he could be a snip at 5.9.

Any other diffs out there ?

Leicesters defence is not that good, what about getting a 4.5 keeper like Fab or Pat? Have 4.5 and a 4.0 to save some money. Premium keepers not worth the extra, low ceiling. City can win 6-1 but you could still end up with 2 points.

Is Doherty worth the extra money over Bennett? I'm downgrading PVA to one of them and can't decide.

Mendy, Robertson, Alonso, AWB are my other defenders.

Well I don't know about everyone else (c) experiences with Aguero this season , but I'm happy with mine

Gwk2 40 next highest would of been 18
Gwk4 12 but Hazard would of been
22 so lost 5 pts on that owned both
Gwk7 18 but Hazard would of been 20 so lost 2 on that

So 15 pts up on it , happy and (c) again this gwk.

If you're happy to use a few weeks of FPL results from one player to decide your future FPL choices, then that's just you 🙂 I believe there is more to it than simply whether someone scored a reasonable average of points in the past as my captain.

For me, he got an average of 14 points (after doubling) per game (captained twice), and I've now sold him. Will haptain Sterling next GW if I own him. Otherwise Mane or Lacazette or Hazard.

Well I'm actually looking at Laca and Vardy for Aguero and Mitrovic around gwk12 , but whilst I have him and he hasn't let me down I (c) him v Burnley and Southampton, we all know he has the potential to explode as we seen. He is one of a few players able to score a hat-trick and braces for fun.

Don't let others get in your head. Aguero is capable of a big score against any opponent and no one except for Pep truly knows how many minutes he's going to get. If you're happy with him, which many managers are, carry on.

If he blanks then yeah I'll be looking to get rid too but so far he's returned in every home game. It's not like Aguero owners have to captain him either. Nothing wrong with owning him and captaining Hazard or someone else.

Tbh I might be looking to get Aguero back in in GW 11 or 13 or something if he's looking fit, on form, and still starting games. I sold due to doubts over fitness and minutes, and alternative options in midfield (I was planning to use the money this week to upgrade Pogba and/or Ozil, since I'm still not keen on the sub 8m midfielders).

Other a gamble on Firmino upping his involvement.

We have seen Firmino emerge from quiet, less involved periods to become a force again over several games. I wouldn't be all that shocked if he turned out to be the best option

Bought premium FFS only used in GW1 and not after
Moved to Spain due to studying abroad
Haven’t looked at my team much currently ranked 6K
Last season I spent so much time looking at my team and ways to improve and I had no where near the same points at the same point as now in the season.
            It’s such a strange game really maybe that’s why it’s a fantasy.

There is no such thing as overthinking it in FPL, it's just thinking it and making bad decisions. If you're doing good without thinking it then you're just lucky.

                Agreed.
Sometimes I think and think and think and finally make a decision.

Turns about to be the wrong decision lolz!

There's always some way you can improve your team and the more you look at your options and tinker about, the more hits you'll end up taking. I think it's necessary to find a balance, no time at all and you won't have any idea what to do, too much time and you'll end up taking a regular stream of hits. I lost the plot last season and am trying to keep myself to long term hits this season, much better already, for it, there's a long way to go though.

2FTs, 2.1 ITB. Anything to do this week? Don't want to waste a transfer but there is nothing that is screaming out at me?

            Patricio (Hamer)
Robbo - Trippier - Alonso (Bennett - AWB)
Hazard - Mane - Richy - Fraser (Maddison)
            Kun - Jiminez - Mitro

Get Mendy for Trippier and Doherty for Bennett and we'll have exactly the same squad after I bring back Aguero for Kane.

Best mid-priced forward. Already have Zaha and Fraser in midfield.

Tied between Wilson, Mitro and Arnie

Anybody fancying taking a chance on Duffy?

Brighton got some good games and Duffy's chances as a major differential could be great!

I’m going Dunk currently. Might switch for Duffy as I have the money but never know when I’ll need the 0.1 down the line

Cool, yeah Dunk is also worth a shout, either could reap rewards.

I'm just trying to think outside the box a little with Trippier's removal, the obvious choice would be Mendy, still undecided yet and waiting as long as possible before deciding.

            RMWCT

            Patricio, Hamer

            Doherty, Dunk, Robertson, Alonso, Mendy

            Salah, Sterling, Hazard, Kennedy, Obiang

            Wilson, Arnautovic, Mitrovic

Wilson becomes Murray in a couple of gameweeks

            Which would you rather have?
            A. Ederson + doherty
            B. Patricio + Mendy

Mendy feels more like a roration risk over anyoneelss
