Captain Sensible – Richarlison tops poll in complicated Gameweek 13 debate

Gameweek 13 of Fantasy Premier League could prove the most difficult for the captaincy this season.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool are on the road this weekend which robs us of the opportunity to back a Salah or Aguero home captaincy.

Meanwhile, Chelsea travel to Spurs leaving the door open for a differential to prove the most popular. But is he the right option to go with?…

Captain Poll

Gameweek 13 sees a surprise leader emerge at the top of the poll in Everton’s Richarlison (£7.0m). No player has garnered more than the Brazilian’s 33.47% backing in the vote so far and when we dig a little deeper, it’s easy to see why. The makeshift centre-forward has three goals and one assist since Gameweek 8, recording an average of 6.6 points per match in his last five league outings. This weekend he goes up against a Cardiff City side conceding 2.2 goals per away match this season.

Below Richarlison is a selection of captaincy household names that have not quite earned the usual support from their owners. Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.5m) have rotated home fixtures quite nicely so far this season but both of them are away this weekend. For that reason, just 22.53% of our voters think Salah is worth captaining at Watford with even fewer (16.89%) supporting Aguero at West Ham.

The last time the pair were ruled out of the captaincy (when they faced each other in Gameweek 8) we were fortunate enough to see Eden Hazard (£11.3m) present a favourable trip to Southampton. This week Chelsea are away at Tottenham, pulling the Belgian out of widespread consideration. Accordingly, he looks set for a 10th-place finish in the captain poll with just 1.59% of the votes.

Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) heads up the best of the rest outside of the this week’s top three with 4.73% backing, after two goals and three assists in the last three Gameweeks.

He is followed by Anthony Martial (£7.6m), whose six goals in five matches has convinced 3.93% of you that he is the optimum captain for Gameweek 13 when Manchester United host Crystal Palace.

After that, it’s Salah’s Liverpool colleague Sadio Mané (£9.9m) with a 1.94% share.

Matt Doherty‘s (£4.9m) potential for big returns against Huddersfield has convinced 1.68% of our voters to back him for the armband, no defender has more backing for Gameweek 13.

Despite boasting more encouraging underlying statistics than team-mate Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) sits way down in ninth on the captain poll. That is almost certainly as a result of his current fitness issues, although his price does mean that his ownership is 20.6% lower than his Brazilian colleague.

With all these options and uncertainty , I think captaining Hazard is the best choice.

Will surely play 85+ minutes, main player for Chelsea so will be involved .

Fok. Ings is "big doubt" which probably means very out. Now I probably need to use my remaining FT this week because bench is weak.

    Pat (Fab)
    Alonso Robbo Doherty (Awb, Mendy)
    Salah Mane Rich Fraser (Stephens)
    Aguero, Wilson Ings

One option: Do Ings Arnie already this week.
Other option: Do Ings Jimenez this week and swap Arnie in later.
Third option: Do boring Mendy to Laporte and probably wait for Trippier's comeback and Spurs fixtures to turn

Thanks for replys. Probably doing Ings Jimenez because that gets me covered at least for two weeks on attacking side (not including Bournemouth's tough fixtures) and for some reason I am not so confident on Laporte's chances on high points against WHU and BOU even though they probably dominate both matches.

A genuine captaincy conundrum on our hands this week as Everton’s Richarlison tops the captains poll thanks to a favourable looking fixture at home to Cardiff whilst regular poll leaders Mohamed Salah and Sergio Aguero both play away from home with not entirely mouth watering matches for Liverpool at Watford and Manchester City at West Ham.

That said, with Aguero once again being given two weeks off by his national team and Salah only playing the one game for Egypt (in which the Liverpool man grabbed the last minute winner), they are arguably still the best options at our disposal.

I think I’m gonna plump for Salah, now coming into form and with Liverpools Champions League game not until Wednesday, I expect him to play most of the game against an opposition who like to get on the attack in their home games which could leave some space at the back. I also think there’s a good chance Liverpool continue with the 4-2-3-1 formation, leaving Salah up front and potentially on penalties if James Milner is saved for the games at Paris and the derby next weekend to come.

Who are you captaining this gameweek and why?

Salah - if you do the maths, virtually no player costing over £10m can justify their price on a points per million basis compared to the best performing £6m-£7m assets, so the £10m+ players need to be chosen as captain also.

      Salah at home: 8 8 8 3 15 8
      Aguero at home: 20 6 7 8 6 13 7
      Richarlison at home: 9 3 3 15

      Salah away: 9 2 2 2 8 2
      Aguero away: 2 2 6 1 2
      Richarlison away: 14 -2 2 7 5

Salah's 2 decent scores away from home came against Palace and Huddersfield. His other away fixtures have been Leicester, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal (so not surprising he isn't hauling given the difficulty of those fixtures).

Aguero's 1 decent score away from home came against Cardiff. His other away fixtures have been Arsenal, Wolves, Liverpool and Spurs (so again not surprising he isn't hauling given the difficulty of those fixtures).

Richarlison missed 2 home games against Huddersfield and West Ham after being banned. His two home hauls were against Southampton and Brighton. His two blanks were against Fulham and Crystal Palace.
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

For me it is (in order of best option):

      1) Salah - has shown an ability to score points against weaker teams at home and away and gets CS point and 5pts for a goal
      2) Aguero - similar to Salah, but no CS point so not quite as good
      3) Richarlison - too unpredictable to trust

Have Salah, Richarlison, but i'd stick with Aguero. Tough decision but Pellegrini said they won't change their attacking football edges it to me. Some caveats: No KDB/Bernardo so Gundogan expected to play, Snodgrass gets his one match ban and Noble (a more natural central midfielder) should be back in XI.

I'd try captain Jimenez if I have him, actually. No Zanka and Lowe this week. Last time Zanka didn't play they lost 1-6 against City.

    The case for Doherty (C)?

According to Odds on FPL, here are the goalscoring probabilities for the favourite captain choices this week:
    Richarlison 46.5
    Aguero 63.58
    Salah 55.1
    Martial 43.45
    Sterling 47.92
    Doherty 15.6

Seems Aguero is the bookmakers choice for captain, with 63.58%. However, when we look at Clean Sheet odds, Wolves top the chart with 58.98%
When you combine this with Doherty's 15.6% chance of a goal threat, that means the Doherty has a 65.4% chance of returning a Goal or a CS this week higher than Aguero has of scoring a goal. He has a 9% chance of returning both a goal and a clean sheet.

The argument against defenders, always seems to be that they don't have a high ceiling - but Doherty has returned 3 double digit hauls this season, all against fairly easy opposition, BUR (H), SOU (H) and cry (A).
Aguero and Richarlison have 2 double digit hauls, Salah has 1. Martial and Sterling both have 3, so Doherty is out-doing or matching the big captain options on explosiveness. I don't think it's massively unlikely that we'll see an assist/goal and a clean sheet from Doherty and some bonus if he does get a CS as well.
I haven't used any probabilities for assist potential, but Salah and Aguero have more xA/90 this season than Doherty: 0.32 and 0.28 compared to 0.11, which is obviously a big difference, suggesting that Salah and Aguero could have more points potential than Doherty. Richarlison only has 0.09 xA/90, so he's worse off.

Another thing which sways me, is Huddersfield's first choice left back, Lowe, is injured, so we might be seeing more joy down Wolves's right flank.

Well, I'll still probably go safe and go with Aguero - but I'm so tempted by Doherty, and this feels it's his week.

Are those scoring odds for Doherty right? He averages about a goal every 15 games.

A goal every 15 games, doesn't take into account the opposition. Huddersfield are bad, therefore the probability of Doherty scoring this week is higher than other weeks.

Well, all I did really was look at goalscoring and CS odds, and some simple probability. I reckon he'll be fit, it was only a facial injury and never seemed too serious. We should find out soon from Nuno's conference.

don't think you can just add the probabilities of two unrelated things happening like that but I could be wrong - you're also not taking into account assists/bonus and the amount of goals both teams score - that being said, he's not a bad shout at all!

this is exactly right. the probability that doherty scores or gets a clean sheet is the probability that he scores, plus the probability that he gets a clean sheet MINUS the probability that he both scores and gets a clean sheet.

but just to point something out, you're assuming that doherty scoring and doherty getting a clean sheet are independent events, which is a reasonable but not uncontroversial assumption

Instead of just comparing probabilities you should work out expected points. For example, Salah gets 5 points for a goal whereas Kun gets 4. Just multiply this by the probability. Do this for each event that can contribute to a players points scores such as assists, bonus, clean sheets etc.

Is anyone else concerned Martial won't start this weekend? I have my doubts with a huge CL game on Tuesday that could secure qualification.

    Why?

He's carrying a thigh injury, albeit a slight one, and has played a lot of football recently - Man City (90 mins), Juventus (90), Bournemouth (90), Everton (90), Juventus (90), Chelsea (84).

Also, this is possibly more important, If Utd don't beat Young Boys CL qualification goes to the wire and will be decided in Spain against Valencia. Nobody wants that considering they travel to Anfield a few days later. This match is huge for them and if they win they can probably rotate in Spain.

I'm not trying to scaremonger, I don't have any insider knowledge, I just wanted to see what everyone thinks as it may affect transfers.

Personally, even if Martial doesn't play vs Young Boys then they still win. But he's required in the league.

He'll play vs Palace and if he needs rest, it'll come in CL. Sanchez on the wing and Lukaku up top in CL so they can get minutes.

    B) Mendy & Barkley > Bennett & Martial

Best option here? Vardy could be out then my bench is awful, also need rid of Mendy, tempted by the -12

    A Mendy > Digne/Stones
    B Mendy & Fraser > Digne & Martial -4
    C Fraser, Barkley & Vardy > Rich, Martial & Jimenez -8
D Mendy, Fraser, Barkley & Vardy > Digne, Rich, Martial & Jimenez -12
