Vardy’s superb FPL form leaves owners with ‘keep or sell’ dilemma

Jamie Vardy is Fantasy Premier League’s form attacking asset over the last nine Gameweeks.

Since Claude Puel departed Leicester City in the wake of the defeat to Crystal Palace, Vardy has ten goals and two assists – no FPL player can match that total of 12 goal involvements during this time.

Ahead of Double Gameweek 35, we wrote that Vardy’s form was making it difficult for his owners to trade him in.

Those who kept faith with the Leicester striker have since been rewarded with 24 points in the space of three Gameweeks.

Vardy’s owners now face another dilemma ahead of the season run-in, with Leicester away at Manchester City next before entertaining Chelsea in Gameweek 38.

The Blues’ away woes (two wins in eight games on the road and no clean sheets in that time) makes that final-day fixture more appealing than it seems on paper but a trip to the Etihad next Monday is more off-putting, given that City have kept 11 clean sheets in their last 15 Premier League games.

Vardy has delivered attacking returns against five of the “big six” clubs this season, however, including an assist in the 2-1 win over City in December.

We review another triumphant day for Vardy and Leicester in our Scout Notes piece below.

Leicester City 3-0 Arsenal

  • Goals: Youri Tielemans (£6.0m), Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) x2
  • Assists: James Maddison (£6.7m), Ricardo Pereira (£5.3m)

Leicester City recorded their fifth win in seven Gameweeks on Sunday, seeing off ten-man Arsenal at the King Power Stadium.

The Gunners played almost an hour with a numerical disadvantage following the 36th-minute dismissal of Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.4m) but there should be no doubt that Leicester were much the better side even before the Arsenal wing-back picked up his second yellow card of the afternoon.

The Foxes had already registered nine shots before Maitland-Niles was sent off and they looked sharper, hungrier and more confident than their timid visitors throughout.

The sending off actually probably hindered Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) more than helped him – Arsenal retreating to a more defensive mindset after being reduced to ten men and not allowing space in behind their backline for Vardy to exploit.

For the first 36 minutes of the second half, Vardy didn’t have a single shot.

It wasn’t until Arsenal opted to throw a few men forward at 1-0 down that Vardy was presented with the space he thrives on, with the Leicester striker following up his own lobbed effort that struck the crossbar to nod the hosts 2-0 up and then securing another double-digit FPL haul when tapping in Ricardo Pereira’s (£5.3m) low cross in stoppage time.

Vardy’s movement was excellent and he could have been on the scoresheet in the first half when he lobbed wide following a through-ball from Marc Albrighton (£5.1m).

No player on show at the King Power Stadium registered more penalty box touches, attempts on goal, shots in the box, efforts on target or big chances.

When FPL forwards are filtered by the last nine Gameweeks, Vardy – who averages 9.0 points per game under Brendan Rodgers – comes top for big chances, shots on target and efforts in the box.

Vardy isn’t the only player to be excelling under his new manager.

Youri Tielemans (£6.0m) has only blanked in one of the last nine Gameweeks and he registered his eighth attacking return of the last two months by nodding in James Maddison‘s (£6.7m) cross on 58 minutes.

Only Vardy had more attempts on goal than Tielemans at the King Power, with the Belgian midfielder going close to scoring a second when he curled narrowly wide on 73 minutes.

Tielemans is one of three Leicester players, the others being Maddison and Harvey Barnes (£5.5m), who sit in the top ten midfielders for efforts on goal over the last nine Gameweeks, emphasising just how attacking the Foxes are under Rodgers now.

Speaking of the on-loan Monaco midfielder, Rodgers said:

What he’s paid to do is create and score and he’s doing it very well.

It was a wonderful cross from James and it’s important that you have players that are hungry to score and he had a great strike as well in the game that was very, very close.

He’s shown great efficiency since he’s been here and for his age, he’s got great maturity in his game and I’m very, very pleased for him today.

Tielemans had begun this match in a midfield three with Wilfred Ndidi (£4.9m) and the excellent Hamza Choudhury (£4.3m), with Maddison and Albrighton playing wide of Vardy.

With Arsenal a man down, Rodgers sacrificed Ndidi at the break and brought on winger Barnes, reverting to the 4-1-4-1 formation he had favoured in recent weeks.

Tielemans and Maddison were given more license to get forward from central positions and it was no surprise that they combined for Leicester’s opening goal.

Maddison was again impressive, if a little selfish at times, registering four shots from distance and three key passes – two of which led to “big chances”.

Ricardo got the assist for Vardy’s goal but opposite full-back Ben Chilwell (£5.0m) caught the eye from an attacking perspective, frequently getting forward from left-back and creating three chances.

While there will be few Fantasy managers interested in budget defensive midfielder Choudhury, his inclusion in a slightly tweaked Leicester set-up meant one less starting spot for the likes of Barnes and Demarai Gray (£5.4m) to compete for.

On Choudhury, Rodgers said:

I thought he was outstanding. He’s made the best tackle I’ve seen since I’ve been in here and that’s why he was in the team.

In the first half against West Ham, we were too passive, against Newcastle we were too passive. And I’m not the type of coach who waits to see if we are going to be passive again.

He’s shown me in training that he’s really aggressive, he recovers the ball so well.

Leicester will seldom face a defence as obliging as Arsenal’s, however, with the Gunners conceding three goals for the third Premier League match in a row.

They remain stuck on one clean sheet away from home all season and rank in the bottom third of the table for big chances, shots in the box and efforts on target conceded over their last six matches.

As well as the three goals he shipped on Sunday, Bernd Leno (£4.9m) had to make nine saves at the King Power – more than any other goalkeeper in Gameweek 36.

While shot-shy Brighton likely won’t cause the Gunners many problems in Gameweek 37, Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) and Chris Wood (£6.3m) will be licking their lips ahead of their final-day meeting with Unai Emery’s side at Turf Moor.

It is difficult to judge Arsenal’s attacking players given that they played for almost two-thirds of the game with only ten men but there were only occasional flashes before Maitland-Niles’ dismissal: Alex Iwobi (£5.4m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) both perhaps should have done better with presentable chances before their team-mate saw red.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) returned after sinus surgery to play alongside Lacazette in a 4-4-2 but the Gabonese forward was mostly peripheral after Maitland-Niles’ red card and didn’t register a single shot.

While there were mitigating circumstances in Leicester, Aubameyang and Lacazette have each just scored one goal in their last seven away league appearances.

Reflecting on the game, Emery said:

Our gameplan was to be strong in our defensive moments and in our attacking moments, to take our chances, attacking their back four.

We started very well, we controlled the match with good positioning and defensively with not many problems.

The second yellow card gave us a lot of problems to continue with our gameplan with more efficiency. Continuing our idea with one player less was going to be difficult. It changed a lot, this red card.

The players worked very well and I’m proud of them. With one player less, we continued our gameplan, trying to be together, defensively strong, and in the attacking moments to take our moments. The first goal has conditioned the result.

When we were better on the pitch with one player less, they had a counter-attack and scored the second one and finished the match.

Mesut Ozil (£7.9m) and Nacho Monreal (£5.4m) missed out with foot and calf injuries respectively, meanwhile.

Leicester City XI (4-1-4-1): Schmeichel; Ricardo, Evans, Maguire, Chilwell; Ndidi (Barnes 46′); Albrighton (Gray 86′), Tielemans, Choudhury (Mendy 78′), Maddison; Vardy.

Arsenal XI (4-4-2): Leno; Maitland-Niles, Mustafi, Sokratis, Kolasinac; Mkhitaryan (Guendouzi 73′), Torreira, Xhaka, Iwobi (Koscielny 46′); Lacazette (Nketiah 78′), Aubameyang.

Morning dzzz, still got a red arrow despite using the TC successfully on Mane. lack of a pool defender really hurting. Best option here? got 1FT and 0.3m itb. main ML rival is 2 points ahead so is a hit advisable? i am not too sure

    Patricio -- Foster
Doherty • Laporte • Kola --- Valery Duffy
    Son • Pogba • Sterling • Mane • Jwp
    Kun • Jimenez -- Gray

    A: Save FT and reassess next week i.e. Doherty/Jimenez > Dann/Rashford
    B: Duffy >> Shaw and then Jimenez >> Mitro/Benteke/Ings in gw38
C: Duffy >> Lindelof and then Jimenez >> Arnie in gw38
    D: Duffy + Gray >> Kelly + Arnie (-4)..and then bench JWP.

Like most people, I'm thinking about taking son out, probably for a hit.

But do you think Bournemouth's style of play might suit son more? I can easily see him getting a couple against a team that comes out and plays.

Not sure I could have done things much differently this gw but ended up losing 6k with 81 points . It's just everyone else was better . Bit frustrating but c'est la vie 🙂

        Regarding 7th.

Teams which go into the early stages of the EL qualifying rarely do well in the league as a consequence.

If Wolves, or Leicester finish there, will that put anyone off owning them next season? - I expect a few of the Wolves players to have some big price rises anyway.

No. I think it only works if 5th place win EL then next season there could be (upto) 5 teams

          No, definitely not.

Works the other way around, 4th place could miss out of CL, if teams from outside the top 4 won the CL and EL.

Then it comes down to the league table.
So if two teams are already assured, then only the top 3 league positions also qualify.

I mean it's pretty unlikely to happen, would mean Spurs dropping out of the CL places, and winning the competition.

                    Example;

                    1. City
                    2. Liverpool
                    3. Chelsea
                    4. United
                    5. Spurs (but win CL)
                    6. Arsenal (but win EL)

United would miss out on CL football, as winners of CL, and EL take priority over league position.

Looking for some advice please. Have a 12 point gap to close in my ML with a big prize on the line!

Have put my team and my rival’s below. 1FT for this week with 2.7 ITB. The transfer I was thinking of was Eriksen > Sterling. Is this the best move to make considering our teams? Thanks!

        Me:

        Lloris – Foster
        TAA – Laporte – Doherty – Duffy – Valery
        Son – Eriksen – Mane – Jota – Redmond
        Rashford – Jimenez – Aguero

        Him:

        Allison – Ryan
        Robertson – Azpi – AWB – Duffy – Kolasinac
        Salah – Hazard – Son – Westwood – Hayden
        Vardy – Wilson – Jimenez

I'm gonna mix 35/36 in one... Bri lads conceding 5 against Bou messed up my head & I switched my plan of BB35 to TC 35 & BB36 with Bri playing Newcastle... better than Wolves & Spurs right... oops 🙂

          TC'd Jimenez for a monster 12 points.

          TC35 + BB36 = 16 points
          BB35 + BB36 would have = 50 points

but smooth part is I still went from 2,581 out to 3,825 & currently at 1,254 🙂

Smooth: 116 points with no chip played! Easily my best ever single gameweek. Captain Salah, returns from Trent, Robbo, Jota, Jimenez, Wilson, Aguero. Moved from 54k to 31k and should be on course for my best ever finish. 🙂

Rough: Going KDB + Firmino in DGW as differentials has been a complete and utter failure. Also backlash of three Spurs (Eriksen/Son/Verthongen) for Huds + DGW now getting apparent. Finding myself in a very awkward place to climb rankings in last two GW's now.

smooth: laca & jwp to mane & long (having delayed for team news otherwise would have been Laca to Firmino). Salah (TC), TAA, Jimenez. 107 pts. Finally last 2 GW chips have broken me clear of the 50/60k mark where I've been since 1st week of December. Up to 20k which would do as a finish to a sluggish season

rough: bit pedantic but 80 pts on Friday and remaining 8 players contributed just 27 pts. 3 Spurs biggest offenders.

          Rough; nothing really!

Smooth; KdB>Mane, Salah(c), Robbo, Jimenez, Aguero, Gray.

Nice green arrow up to 16k OR and sealed my mini-League as rival scored less playing Mane(TC) against me.

        24. It'd be Rudi not to...

Smooth: 129 (-4), TC Salah, almost halved rank from 98k to 50k OR.

Rough: Kola shipping another 3 goals.

          Best smooth of my season:
          - 130 pts
          - A hit that worked: Eriksen + Sterling to TC Salah + Bilva.

          Rough
          - Gray 8pts on the bench but no complaints really.

Smooth - Captain Salah, Mané, TAA, Jimenez owner. Also Vardy - going from a blank to a brace in a few minutes was very nice!

Rough - 29 points on the bench. I played my BB last week for a grand total of 6....

Smooth: 101! First time I hit a century without a chip.

Robertson (c), Mane & TAA helped me out. Wilson, Aguero & Laporte also put in big scores.

          Went from OR 467K -> 367k.

Rough: Four blanks - Boruc, Sterling, Hazard & Son. JWP (9) & Valery (4) were 1st & 2nd on my bench.

Still chuffed with the result though!

Rough: I sold Wilson as well as Stering for a -4 to fund Salah TC
Smooth: Wilsons points would be on bench anyway as I played Jota over him, shifted TC from Mane to Salah, 127 points

Smooth - KDB and Erkisen -> Jota and Salah was probably the best transfers I've done all season. 109 points and up to 8k.

No rough really, wasting the TC on Salah a few weeks ago away to Fulham when I should have saved it for this GW was annoying.

          Smooth: Not much
Rough: Mane post, Wilson bench, Fabianski bench, bench scoring 28 when I BB-d for 14 last week. Transfers (Haz+King for Bilva + Kun -4) costing me 8 points as I would have played Wilson if I did nothing, and got 1FT. Bilva no assist. Sterling blank and now he'll be owned by everyone, so dead asset.

Smooth - 97 points with no hits or chips, Mane (c) plus Salah and Trent gave me a good start and JWP added to it to give me an 'in play' 40 point advantage over my ML rival.

Rough - ML rival caught me up shortly after with Digne, Jota, Aguero (c) and Ederson so we're neck and neck again.

Smooth: 116 points, up from 948K to 648K!!!!!

Rough: Removed TC from Salah to Sane (as per 'advice' from my son). Got in Son for KDB with my FT and benched Wilson. Could have had 146 points!

First season playing and only now really getting to grips with how to play the game. I was pressurised into joining FPL by my husband and sons as they said it would be 'fun' for me to join in. Eight months ago, I knew absolutely nothing about the Premier League (except that Kane played for Spurs!) - now I know more than them thanks to this site! Have really enjoyed playing (even if it has become addictive). Currently 3rd in my ML, which I'm proud of - just need to beat my husband (leading me by 26 points) and then I'll be very happy! Good luck to all for the remainder of the season.

I took a brave 12 point hit this week: Aguero (9), Eriksen (2), Deulofeu (2) and Trippier (0) out for Long (5), Salah (19), Mane (13) and TAA (10). Triple captained Mane. Ended up with 110 points (-12). No regrets.

Played my triple captain this week, got a respectable 96. A couple of interesting anecdotals on chip use from two minileagues that I'm in second place in [to two different people].

          *Rough:*

          (a) I was trailing rival 1 by c 35 points [largely due to him having triple captained Aguero in a good week], knew he had, and would captain, Salah so given his lead felt that this meant I had to go with Mane, even though I knew that Salah was, in expected points value terms, the better option. Does this sort of thing point towards using chips earlier rather than later? Or else only going for differentials when you absolutely have to - 3 * Salah's score rather than rival's 2* would still have, other things being equal, clawed back 19 pts?
          (b) Got Firminho in early in the day, under a 'just in time strategy', reacting to all information, would have meant I'd have avoided him, even though RL concerns made that approach inconvenient for me.

          *Smooth*

Other ML rival simply forgot to click bench boost - and like a smart **** he'd left some quality players like, most notably, Mane, but also AWB on his bench [31 pts total]... another reason to always pick your strongest XI, even if you plan to play BB.

After last week with 113pts (bench boost) basically all smooth again: 117pts, Salah TC, Robertson, Jota&Jimenez, Kun, Hojberg coming off the bench with 6pts
Rough: bringing in Firmino few hours before deadline (but it was instead of Laca so not such of a big deal), Son and Delofeu blanking

          Thanks Geoff.

Been a smooth two weeks: back to back 100-point weeks for the first time ever (albeit using BB and then TC chips). 110 in GW 35 and 117 (-8) in GW 36 has me moved up over 45,000 places from 78K to 33K. Hoping to finish strong inside top 25K and beat my ML rival.

GW 36 smooth: took an 8-point hit to ship out Lacazette, Eriksen, and Kolasinac for Zaha, Salah, and TAA. Triple captained Salah. Net gain of 56 points after hits. Also got good returns from Wolves (Jota & Jimenez) and City (Laporte & Aguero) players.

GW 36 rough: could complain but I won't. Hard to be upset about anything when you break 100 and get your triple captain right.

Rough: missed the deadline (damn these Friday kick offs!), so was left with Firmino and De Bruyne starting and Jimenez(c) instead of Mane(TC)...

Smooth: Redmond and Pereira (LEI) coming off the bench for a combined 15 points and Vardy (who I was going to ship) hitting a brace, plus TAA and Laporte both getting baps.
          86 points all in.

Rough: After missing out on 24 pts by forgetting to BB last week, I managed a massive 8pts from my BB this week (even if I played a genuine bench with Foster, Llorente and Valery). https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/20284473

I was doing Aguero and Eriksen -4 to Salah (captain) and Mitrovic all week.

After the Bobby our news, did Wilson to Origi at 6.59 instead.

On bench boost as well so was not only a 16pt haul missed with the biggest troll in the game, but nobody came in for the zero pointer either.

Morning all. Thoughts on which you prefer from below. 2FT and 0m ITB. Cheers all.

        Lloris
        Laporte - Bertrand - Robbo
        Mane - Son - Eriksen - Jota
        Aguero(TC) - Jimenez - Gray

        (Foster) - Valery - Duffy - KDB

        A) Duffy + KDB > Shaw + Pogba
        B) Duffy + KDB > TAA + 8.7m mid
        C) KDB + Eriksen > Sterling + Milli or 7.2m max.
        D) KDB > 9.6m mid and have 2FT for last GW

If you were chasing this team who would you be looking to get in:

        Ryan / Foster
        Laporte / Robbo / Duffy / Bennett / Valery
        Sterling / Mane / Jota / Son / Hojbjerg
        Vardy / Aguero / Jiminez

I was considering either Mane & Wilson > Pogba & Rashford, or Salah & Wilson > Lukaku & Pogba

Not sure about getting rid of Salah or Wilson.

        Alternatively Deulo > Babel

I'd wait on injury news regarding Utd assets.
Rashford groin & Kaku holding his hammy towards the end of the game.
Both issues make Pogba less attractive right now as well.

As things stand, the top4 teams quality for UCL next season whilst team finishing 5th goes into Europa League.

        - Does this situation change if either spurs/pool win the champions league?
        - Assuming one of chelsea/arsenal finish 4th, does the situation change if one of them also wins the Europa league? i.e. chelsea finish 4th but also win the Europa league
