Premium defenders appeal ahead of new Sky Sports Fantasy Football season

Fantasy managers looking to make the most of premium defenders might enjoy playing Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season.

Premium options at the back came to the fore in the 2017/18 instalment of the popular Fantasy game and there is every chance they could prove to be key assets this time around.

There were five defenders among Sky Sports Fantasy‘s top 10 point-scorers last season, a new record and more than any other position.

With Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola bringing possession football and hugely attacking full-backs to the Premier League, Andrew Robertson (12 assists) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (11 assists) impressed in 2018/19.

However, it was their Dutch colleague Virgil van Dijk who stole the headlines, finishing both as the top-scoring defender in Sky Sports Fantasy Football last season and the highest scorer in any position.

His 299 points, averaging 7.9 per match were recorded as van Dijk won the Champions League, PFA Player of the Year and helped his national side to reach the UEFA Nations League final.

His statistics in Sky Sports Fantasy Football led to him offering an excellent captain option most weeks too, which is why he is expected to be popular again in 2019/20.

Van Dijk kept a total of 20 clean sheets and scored four goals while also performing well for bonus points. He hit tier-one and tier-two passing bonus points on a combined total of 27 occasions.

Fantasy Football Scout Members can access the passing bonus statistics for Sky in the Members Area.

Ahead of the new season, they can also analyse which players look best for tackle bonus as well.

Aymeric Laporte, who came second overall, managed to do hit bonus an impressive 28 times, with 25 of those coming from tier two (70 or more passes in a single game).

That contributed an additional 75 points to his overall tally of 269 in 2018/19. The Frenchman scored 30.57 points-per-million (£8.8m last year), more than any other player, proving a valuable and pivotal pick for Sky Sports Fantasy Football bosses.

As you can see, Manchester City and Liverpool’s exciting title challenge last year heralded a new era in Sky Sports Fantasy Football, with the focus shifting more towards defenders.

Cesar Azpilicueta was the only defender to rank inside the top 10 points scorers in 2016/17, finishing in ninth position.

In fact, the Spanish international was the first defender in the history of the game to achieve this feat and he has since repeated it in both of the two most recent seasons.

From 2016 to 2019, Azpilicueta has amassed an impressive total of 669 points highlighting the point-pulling power that centre-backs or full-backs (he has played in both positions) now possess.

In 2017/18, just four points separated Nicolas Otamendi (244) and Cesar Azpilicueta (240) as they took up the fourth and fifth positions respectively. Otamendi registered 14 clean sheets and found the back of the net four times, while Azpilicueta capped 15 clean sheets with two goals and assists. Both players earned valuable Sky Sports Fantasy Football points from unlikely and underestimated positions.

With the emphasis more than ever on defenders, there is enough value in each player to be convinced that they are worth researching as much as the attacking stars.

Their point-scoring has increased year-on-year; who knows what the top five or 10 players in Sky Sports Fantasy Football will look like in 12 months’ time?

A few Newcastle players to be on the radar (I know). And firstly before you say it, they don't have poor attacking fixtures to start with, arsenal at home is a good fixture to start for attacking returns...I'm not expecting wonders but could keep pace with promoted side punts for same price if looking for enables for Kane Salah sterling side:

Almiron (6m) - played more like a Jota role in 352 than 3511 yesterday according to reports. Is getting but missing lots of chances, if he can get his confidence back could be a good shout.

Longstaff (5m) - took at least one corner once Ritchie off injured yesterday (and likely out for a while). If he gets set pieces will get a few assists - nothing ground breaking but could be good value at 5m

Hayden (4.5m) - has been homesick and wanting a transfer but think he'll stay now. Bruce worked with him previously. The most attacking of 3 cms yesterday. Now Diame gone not much competition for those places (maybe ki) if going 352/532 rather 541/523 which was what rafa played more often.

Not a jimenez, as Andy says this is Newcastle you're talking about. Maybe a mitrovic, too early to tell. From what I've read he brings others into the game rather than an out and out poacher hence the almiron interest, but it's really too early to tell - he's played just over 90 mins

All this caveated by signings changing things (eg another forward coming in which would be welcomed)

        Yeh, sorry I'll explain.
I feel that with Ashley continuing in charge the mood will be negative - protests, players wanting away. I just think morale will be poor, and with difficult opening fixtures they be bottom quickly, adding to the pressure. I'm on Hayden purely as fodder but I don't think anyone's going to get their money's worth with Toon assets in this game.

Thing is, Rafa created that because he pinned his loyalties to the players and the fans. Bruce is a yes-man, he won't have the same effect.

I’m not sure it’s that straightforward myself. The players are playing for their futures under a new man and they could get a bounce. It’s a big shame for Newcastle fans of course that they have Ashley as the owner.

They might get a bounce but let's be clear Bruce is a poor Premier league manager. Rafa over achieved. 17th or 18th is where you should set your expectation. My point is that doesn't nullify cheap attacking options

            2. Markus

I too am fearing the worst and don't have any Newcastle players. But most relegated teams still score 30 goals, someone has to benefit points wise (eg babel, mitrovic). Cardiff were an anomaly because of so much chopping and changing, and Huddersfield much worse than even Newcastle. Newcastle will have a fairly settled ix because of lack of quality so I'd be surprised if one of the above or joelinton didn't prove value even if we go down.

Yeh, fair points, but the bottom line is, are you going to have Toon players in your squad at the expense of other assets? Currently only Lascelles and Hayden have over 2% ownership!

Good article, however Sky have tweaked the bonus system this year and the eye-catching one for me, is the shots on target bonus.

If you take last seasons stats:
Tier 1, now reduced to two from three would result in 363 extra points.
Tier 2, now reduced to three from five would result in 147 extra points.

Obviously designed with attackers in mind, I feel this change will be hugely significant.

I know this has been debated to death but since I already own Wilson, is it better to double up with King or go with Jota? King is likely to be on pens and has the better fixtures, but Jota seemed to do really welly in the CF position towards the end of the season, regardless of the quality of opposition.

I agree Ryan is an awful keeper and awful FPL points scorer but having an 8.5 set and forget pairing is quite nice.

Don't see the massive upside of a set and forget pair if it's the worst one going. How often does a GK get injured or suspended? Rather take the risk on the Burnley GK, or someone like Henderson.

Have to see how we adapt. Play with 3 cbs and wing backs but last season we were like city at home with all possession and teams would come and sit back and wait for their opportunity. I still reckon at home we'll keep quite a few tbh and away at teams like Brighton and Newcastle possibly

Sheff Utd currently have 5 strikers (Sharp, McGoldrick, Mousset, Robinson and McBurnie)

Its so hard to predict who will play, big no for me

Not sure who this is a reply to, but I agree, possible that Robinson still plays as an attacking midfielder, think he did last year anyway.
But surely McBurnie starts as the club record signing.

Gutted to take Robby out of my draft, but he has to be nailed at 5.5 and now I can't be confident he is. Downgraded to Norwood for now.

True but Mousset isn't match fit so won't start. Wilder has said players are fighting for their position and Robinson has been the best player so far so I personally think he's nailed to start atleast gw 1

Fraser / Siggy can be swapped with a lil effort

Kean as a £7m striker would be interesting, not easy to find an extra 0.5m in most of our teams but considering how many of us have a £6.5m striker it could be worth trying.

We did one of these earlier in the pre-season but let's go again.

Do you have a mini-league that you want more entries for?

What's the idea behind your mini-league and what's the league code?

    I'll start!

    FFS Leagues:
    FFS League - ooyz44
    FFS H2H League - gh0126
FFS Members League - code is in members

    And my Canada-focused leagues:
League for managers from Canada - adfilx
League for managers from Ontario - 9e1d0j

There's a Community Article about it but basically you enter that code and then we'll get you in.

1500+ entries so far. We'll rank entrants based on HoF score and then put people into Divisions, and Leagues in those divisions.

        Division 1 - 1 League
        Division 2 - 2 Leagues
        Division 3 - 4 Leagues
        Division 4 - 8 Leagues

We'll keep going with more Divisions until we fill up. Promotion and relegation year to year. Should be good 🙂

      Hi guys,

This seems like an appropriate place to plug our Mystery Gift Box Giveaway League!

It’s free to enter, with prizes sent out each month!

We wrote an FFS article on this last year, and the details are mostly the same, except the prize is now a £25 box every month!

      In short;

      1. Please email us at: Help@TheMysteryGiftBox.com and we will send across the league code

      2. A Mystery Gift Box will be sent to the highest scoring player of each month, plus another box for the overall winner of the league!

      3. Unfortunately, due to International shipping costs, this is for UK entrants only...

      The FFS article from last year can be found here;

      https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/08/06/themysterygiftbox-com-giveaway-fantasy-football-league/

It was a lot of fun running this competition last year, and it would be great to get a few more of you on board for the new season!

      Top 10k Any Season (kmow16).
      Over 1200 teams already entered.
You can still enter your team, but its Season History must show that it has finished the season in the overall top 10,000 at least once.

PDM also runs a similar mini-league for teams that have had at least one top thousand finish - eejnyz.

Other Leagues mentioned in the earlier hot topic a month ago included
      TM's Last Man Standing - bcvy39 and
Top 1k Hall of Fame League (beeps2), for teams with a top 1k rank in the Career Hall of Fame.

        5.5 Robinson, mid from SHU.

I am evaluating going 4 at the back with 2 Pool Coleman and Chenko vs going 3 at the back with 2 Pool and one of Chenko/Coleman plus Robinson in midfield (3-5-2, in that case)

Potentially. Can see him scoring in the first 3 for sure but depends how confident of Cs you are. I feel Robinson is the higher reward and more exciting pick personally

If he means your Robinson at 5.5, he's maybe just lost his place to McBurnie. I've taken him out my draft cos cant be sure he starts.

If he means Robertson the wingback, of course he'll outscore the cheaper wingbacks.

1-2 week punts? Ideal for anyone who's got an early WC strategy lined up/bench boosting GW1 as these players are just transfers waiting to happen (not looking to discuss the merits/pitfalls of this). So far I've got Origi, Moura, KWP and Leno in there. Auba too, but not really a punt. Meyer is one I'm interested in at his price. Who else should make the shortlist?

      Deeney? Holebas? Niles?

Sane & Silva possibly, although that could be risky.

If Sane was slightly cheaper, I'd consider him (KDB same price). Although he did well against West Ham away last season.

Auba, Wilson, Laca perhaps the best frontline (without Kane) for 2 weeks?
