Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 6?

Manchester City are the focus of the Fantasy Premier League captaincy once again.

Gameweek 6 pits the defending champions against a Watford side who have typically struggled at the Etihad Stadium.

While that is the standout fixture, it is still far from simple when it comes to singling out the best candidate.

Furthermore, there are still plenty of other matches that could provide alternative options for the armband this weekend.

We’ve gone over all the possibilities in this latest Captain Sensible article.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Despite blanking on both of his last two Premier League outings, Raheem Sterling (£12.3m) tops the Captain Poll for Gameweek 6.

As of Thursday lunch-time, the midfielder had 33.2% of the vote ahead of a meeting with Watford on Saturday afternoon.

Even though his last goal was recorded in Gameweek 3, Sterling remains joint-third in the Golden Boot race with five goals this season.

Furthermore, in the 2018/19 season, he scored more against Watford than any other player in the Premier League, netting past the Hornets three times.

However, Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) has been catching up his colleague in the poll after he was benched for Manchester City’s Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk midweek.

Sterling played 90 minutes in that match, having done the same against Norwich. That may have some owners concerned about his game-time in Gameweek 6, while Aguero looks very likely to start at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The Argentinian’s credentials need very little introduction, as he currently leads the way in the Golden Boot race.

Aguero has found the net seven times in the first five matches of the 2019/20 season, which means he is yet to experience an FPL blank.

Watford have conceded 10 times so far, the joint third-worst in the division, and have historically struggled in encounters with Manchester City.

The defending champions have won every one of their last eight Premier League clashes with the Hornets, by a combined score of 25-4. Furthermore, the last time the two sides met was the 2019 FA Cup final, which Manchester City won 6-0.

That said, it could be perhaps too soon to weigh up any impact made by new, or rather old, manager Quique Sanchez Flores, who rejoined the club ahead of their Gameweek 5 draw with Arsenal.

Those put off by that element of Manchester City’s Gameweek 6 fixture might be the ones looking at Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), who looks set to claim the bronze medal in this week’s captain poll.

11.4% of voters have selected him as the best option for the armband as the Gunners prepare to host Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

Like Aguero, Aubameyang is yet to blank this season, scored five times and assisting once in the first five Gameweeks of the season.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa may have clean sheets in each of their last two matches, but both of those have occurred in front of their own fans. Away from home, they have conceded four times across two road trips.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m) once again heads up the best of the rest 6.5% of backing ahead of that meeting with Watford.

The Belgian midfielder is yet to blank in matches that he has started this season, his one point in Gameweek 5 coming after 33 minutes from Manchester City’s bench.

Prior to that, de Bruyne had assisted in each of the first four Premier League matches of 2019/20, also finding the back of the net in the Gameweek 4 win over Brighton.

He has marginally more support in the captain poll than Teemu Pukki (£7.1m), who tends to feature in the conversation most weeks these days.

The Norwich forward has averaged 9.8 points per game this season, proving his credentials even further by scoring against Manchester City in Gameweek 5.

It’s Burnley up next for Pukki, who have been a lot tighter at the back this season, but at least 5.8% of our voters believe that won’t stop the in-form man.

Despite Chelsea’s defensive problems this season, Fantasy managers seem to be avoiding Liverpool assets for the captaincy.

The Blues are yet to keep a clean sheet in 2019/20 and have conceded 11 goals, only Norwich have let in more at this stage.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), who has attacking returns in all but one of his matches so far this season, has been backed by just 4.6% of voters.

Meanwhile, Sadio Mané (£11.6m), who has three goals in his last two outings, has backing from just 1.3% of voters, the same number as Harry Kane (£11.0m).

Son Heung-min‘s (£9.6m) two goals against Crystal Palace and a midweek benching are probably what underpins the 2.3% of voters who believe he is worth captaining against Leicester.

Che Adams (£5.8m) is yet to score this season but 2.2% have touted his credentials for the armband as Bournemouth come to Southampton on Friday night.

Callum Wilson (£7.8m) and Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

    Hi everyone

Been away in a different time zone so haven't been on here a while. Got 2FTs... do I?

    A) Robbo & Moura > De Bruyne & Guilbert (free)
    B) Something else?

I'd been saving the FT to get rid of Moura but missed another price rise on him (stopping me from doing Robbo to a 4.5 by 0.1). Schoolboy stuff.

    This is my team.

    Ederson
    Robbo / VVD / Digne / Rico
    Salah / Sterling / McGinn / Moura
    Vardy / Pukki

    McGovern / Lund / Dendoncker / Greenwood

    Thanks!

Not sure Ederson at 6m is needed and tbh,a downgrade to Guilbert gives you a set of rotation that is not ideal, Rico is on borrowed time at best, and Lund has an awful fixturelist ahead. I guess you are sold on KDB and not afraid to lose Robbo, my suggestion is taking -4, where you get Pope and then you can get at least a decent one defender which can be at 5.4 i believe? If you just then want Ota get him or else there is several options in that category. Or if you want, you can just do a slightly cheaper one this week and then make Rico into an 4.4-4.5 def you can rotate with. Kelly (first choice left back will soon overtake Rico´s place and Francis returns soon and then Ake can be shuffled over to left back. Rico is fourth choice at best.

With Laporte and Stones now out, is Otamendi a solid pick? Are there reasons you're avoiding?

Where do you stand on Zinchenko and the risk to his spot?

After a Liverpool defender and potentially Lucas Digne, is City and Otamendi the next best pick?

Otamendi is in my WC team.
In the next 6 you'd expect 3-4 cs.
      At 5.4 still great value.

I'd be on him if I was wildcarding and, judging by my dismal start, maybe I should be!

Started the season with Ederson as I couldn't decide who was the most nailed of the defenders, but Otamendi looks a great option.

I would hold on before going any City defence at the moment. Lack of attacking returns and clean sheets. I reckon the Laporte loss is going to hit hard. Also, only 1 fit CB in Ota and CDM playing CB. Any more injuries and it is good night.

Ota is a solid pick, will get a few CS's given the fixtures and can pop up with a goal or 2 along.

Keep Zinch this week, but Mendy when back, would displace him imo.

      I still really like Otamendi.

2.4% ownership, cheapest route into City's defence - whilst not as strong without Laporte, I still believe they'll shut out a few teams over the next six - plus lots of goal threat, all seven of his shots have come in the box.

Just point them towards the stats - shots in the box for defenders, xG etc. Also came close vs Norwich, 4 goals in 17/18 too. He isn't Trent, but he carries a threat for sure.

Don't see mendy permanently displacing Zinchenko.
With laporte out Zinchenko is a more solid defender than Mendy.
Mendy a better attacking option but gets caught upfield.
With a makeshift centre back pairing Pep's going to need to trust his fullbacks. Guarantee Walker had his backside kicked after last week.

Otamendi is feels like the safest choice for city defence right now.
I'm a Zinchenko owner slightly concerned about Mendy coming back to share games/minutes. Will probably replace him soon to Otamendi or downgrade to make some funds for attack.

We do know that City no matter line up will get cs sheets. More than most teams. Ota will play most games if not all. Price is good. Offers threat on set pieces. Fixtures is nice.

With Dinho they get a dm that reads the game very well. Decent on the ball. No pace and it weakens City even more on set pieces against which they are vulnerable. Watford, Everton, Wolves is next three. Al three teams capable to harm them on counter attacks and have more physicality, i ask myself how on earth will City defend vs Watford and Wolves on set pieces against. Everton not that more physical team but also in context, set piece takers in all three teams are excellent. Holebas, Dign/Sigurdsson/Moutinho.

I really want fullbacks, not sure right now but Emerson pictured in training so hopefully back for Brighton and nice run ahead. Arsenal once they get Belle and Tierney could be good, Chilwell is one to keep an eye on but seems a little brittle regarding fitness.. Soyuncu is the caveat as you wil pay 0.8 more for the same team.
Aurier is an outside pick if he nails that right back at least vs the weaker teams. i have a feeling that Poch will play him in easier fixtures and then play the more defensive minded Foyth in harder ones.

My view is biased as i want City to concede, as Pool fan and owner of Kun/KDB.

      Solid, but gametime to be monitored after Pep comments;

'Fernandinho & Otamendi are too old to play every game'

"I didn't have doubts [Fernandinho] could do it," Guardiola said after City's win on Wednesday. "Nico is 31, Fernandinho is 34 and the next alternative (Eric Garcia) is 18. For three or four months I don't know what will happen."

I really want him, but I don't think he's my top priority for the time being.

Presently happy with Trent + Digne + Diop + Soy + Lund, and if I were to make a move it would probably be a downgrade to Digne to enable Son

Laporte to Otamendi seemed a no-brainer move last week saving 1.1 in the process, I remember his goal threat well from his peak days at City so happy to hold despite not being convinced City will get more than one or two CS over their next five or six.

Great discussion point. Yes, I agree. I expect him to get rested the odd game (as pep alluded to when saying Rodri and Walker can also play CB, and stating Ota’s age) but I back pep to restore the back line with the CS’s coming

I moved Zinchenko to Otamendi on my wildcard. Zinch was only in there as the cheaper route into the City defence, now Ota is cheaper I think it makes sense to pick him. He carries a goal threat, although that has to be balanced by the increased threat of cards. Pep says that he can't play every game, however he hasn't got any other fit CBs. Until Stones is back he's going to have to play almost every game that isn't the league cup.

If Kun prevails over Sterling in next 2 games too and Abraham Haller derail...

    Use the WC and do:
VVD Sterling KDB Abraham Haller to Otamendi Richa James Kun Auba?

Thinking about making some changes for -4
      Callum Willson - Mount - Zinchenko -> Aubameyang - Cantwell - Guilbert

The problem is that i just have 4.4 for a defender, and there are not many good options so selected Guilbert.
Madness or good moves? It all depends on how long Mount is injured, if there is just one week then maybe not a good idea...

Bit of a quandary. Fairly sure I'll wc this week and am in an exact money situation which rests on Abraham who is rising tonight.
      So....
      A. Haller to Abraham before the games for free but lose 0.1 on the former (who I might keep on wc).
      B. Take a hit to get Abraham in for Greenwood. Hit button later.
      C. Just hit the button tonight.

Abraham over Haller on WC anyway mate. It was fun whilst it lasted to have a good FPL West Ham asset but it just ruins them for me. Pool are statistically a worse defence than United, just dodgy case of whether Abe starts

Nah not at all I rate him as a 6m option in my head. Just wouldn’t be that excited about starting any attacker away at Burnley, especially given norwich’s away record vs home form

Well Pukki scored vs pool and Cantwells success is entwined with Pukkis. Sure Cantrell has no away return yet but I see them both in the points this week. If not cantwell then buendia will be.

I just can’t see a Brendan Rodgers Leicester allowing spurs a high scoring game personally.

Not bad mate saving FT this week and looking to get Mount and Maddison in next week for Dilva and James I think. Schär is fit which is great news for me. If I don’t hear anything about James then I will have to bench for cantwell which isn’t ideal but still decent.
