Captaincy fails for over two-thirds of top 10k Fantasy managers

Manchester City’s unexpectedly narrow 2-1 win over Southampton came at a cost for a large chunk of the top 10,000 managers in Fantasy Premier League.

Between them, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) were handed the armband by almost 70% of the FPL bosses who were inside the top 10k at the point of the Gameweek 11 deadline.

The premium midfield pair duly blanked against the Saints, with Sterling picking up a booking to compound his owners’ misery.

Just under 6.5% of this elite group had more joy with a Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) captaincy, at least, while around one in four top 10k managers overlooked the City trio altogether.

The highest-owned player inside the top 10,000 is Jamie Vardy (£9.3m).

The Leicester City striker, who faces Crystal Palace on Sunday, featured in only 33.25% of top 10k squads ahead of the Gameweek 10 fixtures but his 20-point haul against Southampton has understandably increased his popularity.

Of course, a fair number of the new entrants inside the top 10,000 would have been helped there by owning Vardy in the first place.

The Foxes’ forward was by some distance the most-bought FPL asset of Gameweek 11, being transferred in by just over 675,000 managers.

De Bruyne remains in one in three top 10k squads, with Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) and John Lundstram (£4.7m) – both of whom delivered double-digit hauls on Saturday – also widely owned assets.

Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.4m) popularity continues to dwindle, with just over one in four top 10,000 managers hanging onto the Egyptian.

Indeed, Salah doesn’t feature in the top 10k Wildcard template, with Sadio Mane (£11.9m) proving a much more popular buy.

A two-man strike force of Vardy and Abraham is being widely favoured, with budget asset Aaron Connolly (£4.6m) the third-most-popular FPL forward among the elite managers who used their Wildcard this week.

There is predictably a lot of crossover between the template Wildcards inside the top 10k and outside of it, with Salah and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) proving more popular in the chasing pack.

We have now hit the 50% mark for Wildcard usage in the top 10k.

One in four of the top 10,000 FPL managers have already used their Triple Captain chips, with the Free Hit and Bench Boost chips not as heavily relied on.

Chip usage inside the top 10k

Just under 33% of the top 10,000 have yet to use a single chip but over 25% have used at least two already.

2.2% of the top 10k have maxed out on their allotted chips already, leaving only their second Wildcard to be used.

I might be forced to play him as my 2 other budget defenders are either crap or have a tough match. But I learnt that not playing him or not putting him as 1st sub cost me dear. So I'm happy to play him. With 1 clean sheet so far, the Spurs are not that tight. So there's a good chance of a goal for SHU and Lundstram is a good shout (involved on a third of the Blade's goals).

    Gazzaniga - McGovern

        Abraham I’m very happy with.
Kane, I’m happy to have a premium striker who I know is nailed every week.
Lacazette is the most at risk of the three, a move to Vardy is obvious, but for some reason I’m holding off. Perhaps it’s Lacazettes fixtures

      Chin up.

Be adventurous and get rid of all City. Use the cash to beef up your team.

You have nothing to lose now with your rank.

I only have Dilva and he is being shipped out. My rank jumped from over 1 mil to 548k with a failed cap from Salah and whopping 1 point from Dilva.

Many say you are crazy to go no City, I disagree.

You can beef up your team getting rid of your City assets.

With your current rank you have nothing to lose.

Basically saying “waaaa why do we bother with FPL when we don’t do so well because of bad decisions waaaa”

Grow up a bit, it’s a game, not life. There are bad weeks on fpl and good weeks. Ultimately, should have no affect on your life, if it does then stop playing

Cant say it doesnt make sense! But robbo and taa both proved again yesterday that they were the two defenders most likely to get the most attacking returns over the season.

It all depends how you use your money in mid and fwds, but as far as Im concerned, Im very likely to get rid of Sterling who is not worth his price tag right now. Which means that I will have enough money to afford Robbo. So why go the cheaper route in defense?

Cancelo Sterling CHO out for Robbo Pulisic and...? Undecided on the last one. Maybe Son? If Spurs play well today. Or a Leicester mid... which would still leave me a lot itb. But as you said earlier, not easy to decide how to spend the money as Kun Auba Kane Sterling Salah are underperforming/not reliable for captaincy

Would u do salah vvd to mane robbo for -4? Bit of a sideways move but feel they are good moves and will be priced out if hold

Way too sideways imo for a hit. Monitor Salah’s injury situation as it may become worthwhile

      Morning!
Not actually sure what to do here other than I feel Kun and Boly should go...

      1FT 0.4itb
      Pope, McGovern
      TAA, Lunds, Willems, Rico, Boly*
      Mané, KDB, Mount, Barnes, Dendo
      Kun*, Vardy, Abraham

      Potential options:
      Kun, Dendo, Boly >
      A) Jimi, Martial/ Dilva/ Pulisic, Robbo
      B) Firmino, Martial/ Dilva/ Pulisic, Soy/ Tomori
      C) Mousset, Sterling, Soy/ Tomori

I could do any of the above with only 2 moves for a -4, but they have to involve Kun out to fund or just Kun out and save other moves...?!

      Any advice appreciated!

I don’t think you need to panic here, your defence can easily cover Boly for a week.
And Kun will probably play against Liverpool, who are conceding most weeks.
Rather have 2FTs going to the IB

Yeh saving is def an option. I just don’t like the thought of over £12m of value with a question mark over his head every week!

In practice I wouldn’t make any of my proposed moves all at once as I’m trying now to avoid any non-essential hits

I do agree, I took him out, mostly in rage, after his benching last week.
But I’m quite confident he’ll play against Liverpool.

      Pope-Button
      TAA-Soyuncu-Lundstram-Lascelles-Rico
      Mane-Sterling-KDB-Mount-Cantwell
      Abraham-CWilson-Connolly

      0FT, 1.6ITB

Transferred out Otamendi last night finally, almost did CWilson -> Vardy for -4 as well, but I wanted to see Leicester play today first.

      A. Do I transfer in Vardy for CWilson for a -4 this week and ride the Cantwell drop? I'll need to play 4 ATB or one of Connolly or Midfield bench fodder each week. I'd consider captaining Vardy against Arsenal next weekend.

      B. Transfer CWilson -> Jimenez next week, giving me some extra funds to upgrade Cantwell to Tielemans or another midfielder in that price range. Potentially more balanced.

What should I do? Any help is appreciated!

Otamendi & Cantwell out for either:

I’m sticking with Salah and Sterling. Pre season they were touted as “the best” players in the league. Mane has been excellent for over a year and is as good (if not better). At the end of the season they will likely be the three top scoring players in the game so I think you just stick with two or, if funds allow, get all three.

I would save I think. Don’t get why I’m seeing lots of sterling out transfers, are Man City’s fixtures even that bad. Chelsea at home who struggle to keep clean sheets. Newcastle and Burnley aren’t solid either

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
            5 years, 9 days ago

Sterling hasn't justified his price with the good fixtures just gone, so while I agree the upcoming ones aren't particularly taxing from an attacking view, its his form that is the issue

Not seen the game yesterday but he could’ve scored more against palace and villa, granted his finishing was poor vs palace. Then he scored the hatrick in champs league. With mendy back I think he looks really dangerous
