Mount starts as Alonso and Azpilicueta miss out for Chelsea

Mason Mount (£6.8m) has come through his injury concern to start Chelsea’s Gameweek 12 meeting with Crystal Palace.

The midfielder sustained an injury against Ajax midweek but keeps his place in the line-up, although it is unclear which role he will play this afternoon.

Mount could either be in the central midfield trio of a 4-3-3 or as the number 10 in a 4-2-3-1.

His return to fitness means that Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.9m) stays on the bench for a third Premier League match in a row as Christian Pulisic (£7.4m) and Willian (£7.2m) start on the flanks.

However, the most surprising news from Stamford Bridge is in the full-back areas.

Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) starts at left-back with Marcos Alonso (£6.3m) absent from the matchday squad.

Meanwhile, club captain Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.9m) drops to the bench to allow the incredibly promising youngster Reece James (£5.0m) to start at right-back, just days after scoring an important Champions League goal.

That means that Fikayo Tomori (£4.8m) and Kurt Zouma (£4.7m) retain their places at centre-back.

Roy Hodgson looks to have reverted to 4-4-2 following their 2-0 defeat to Leicester last time out.

Andros Townsend (£5.6m) comes in for Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m) to play on the left side.

The formation also looks capable of playing of switching to a 4-3-3 to match up Chelsea if need be, with Townsend able to push forward and join Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) and Jordan Ayew (£5.1m) in attack.

Crucially, Martin Kelly (£4.1m) is on the bench for the fourth match in a row with James Tomkins (£5.0m) and Gary Cahill (£4.5m) preferred at centre-back, the latter making a return to Stamford Bridge after seven years there as a player.

Chelsea XI: Kepa; Emerson, Tomori, Zouma, R James; Kanté, Kovačić; Pulisic, Mount, Willian; Abraham.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; van Aanholt, Cahill, Tomkins, Ward; Townsend, Kouyaté, Milivojević, McArthur; Ayew, Zaha.

As a Pukki, Abraham (c), Mount, CHO owner it’s fair to say it could be going better!

Red arrow guaranteed before the 3pm kick offs is a new low

Tbf it could be going better but looking at the fixtures you did the right thing playing them. Plus its only HT at Chelsea, not like the game is over.

I would have captained Tammy if he hadn't let me down twice already this year and my new-love of watching my captain playing on TV (I don't have BT but I got Sky) made my decision easy this week.

1500 (3pm) kick-off games are not shown so as to not take away from the atmosphere in the stadiums (if all games were on TV less fans would go to the games - especially in bad weather) so overseas such as in India, Dubai, US etc the TV rights are different because it's not like those fans would be going to the games anyway.

To add to this, it's like a lot of online streams that show PL games you'll find can legally get away with showing the game so long as no PL trademarks are used (that's the real thing that causes them issues for being taken down)

Anyone got an opinion when the best time to use the bench boost chip?

Typically I try to wait for a double game week but it requires a lot of effort getting the players in and then wanting to get them out a few weeks later.

Wow that's when I'm looking at potentially using it gw 15. My only concern is having Lowton v City and I'm thinking about bringing JWP as a 5th midfielder v Norwich at home.

Always in a DGW, ideally with a wildcard to either setup for it or revert after it (depends on how the DGWs fall). Last year yes this strategy didn't work due to all the obvious players blanking, but it's still the right thing to do.

This is going to sound so silly (not watching the game - but from the sounds of things Palace are sitting deep giving Chelsea the ball)... so how would you react if your team were Chelsea (or in their position) and your team said; ya know what, sod this, dropped off five yards, kicked the ball to the Palace 'keeper and said "come on... have a go" to open the game up a bit more (which from the sounds of things would benefit them more than Palace).

    1. Bruce Lee
      • 6 Years

A lot of teams do the tactic of waiting for the opposition to make a mistake and it is so boring to watch

That's why I like Pool - they just go for it no matter what - in attack or defence

      1. Zenith UK
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 11 months ago

Such as Palace that's what I mean. Could you imagine if you was watching a game and the attacking side got so fed up of a team camping their 18 yard box they just kicked to them backed off a bit and said come on, let's play.

I mean I'd be baffled but if it stopped teams like City/Liverpool/Chelsea (in this instance) keeping teams boxed in and it being boring as anything to watch I'd love it! haha!

As opposed to the 0-0 we're heading to right now? At least if Chelsea gave up the ball and made Palace come up the pitch they'd have some space to play in behind once the ball is recovered. I also think that as the teaming camping in their own 18yard box you'd be so humiliated that a team had just given you the ball because you're that content in sitting back as professionals you'd be inclined to come out and try and punish that sort of humiliation?

        1. F4L
          • 9 Years
          4 years, 11 months ago

I don't think they would be embarrassed. Its all hypothetical, but the Palace team has been sent out there to a job in a certain way, they wouldn't alter their tactics unless they go 2 behind.

Park the bus has just proven to be too effective in recent years for the lower teams not to do it.

          1. Zenith UK
            • 8 Years

That's what I mean, so imagine Mount just got the ball, said eff this and kicked it to Cahill and said, come on lad, show us what you've got and all the Chelsea players take a few steps back. As Palace surely you can't just kick the ball back and say "no thanks, boss said to sit in the 18 yard box" I know it's extremely unorthodox but some teams just can't break down teams like Palace when they camp out for the day.

                Imagine? I just saw this on BBC website;

"Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma are 10-15 yards inside the Palace half. Palace are camped in and they can't get out."

This is exactly my point. I'd be humiliated if a team literally gave me the ball and told me to play in front of 30,000 let alone a live game to millions.

Nevertheless, go ol' Tammy scored 🙂

Possibly because he was flagged not because he wouldn’t get points.

Yep, really didn’t expect him to start after picking up a knock on Wednesday. That said, Palace are always solid.

He's had 2 blanks in 6. I think you might be being a bit silly over a 6m player

Tammy hasnt been producing lately, doesnt take enough chances as a forward and might have to get rid after this gameweek

      He got 12pts last GW...

Is it 45 mins against a resolute deep Palace block that's putting you off? Good luck finding better value elsewhere.

Very satisfying look to my attack. I choose my players according to that system now and it's more successful than FFS advice

I do kinda want Auba for the next 3 but I can't get rid of Jimi after just putting him in.

I should’ve got Deulofeu really before the Norwich game but missed that train. Hoping the Auba Express is along shortly.

PVA is always a good FPL player, it's just that he's a bit pricey when there are a lot of value defenders around.

yeah this is more down to Chelsea just not moving the ball quick enough. The same happened against Newcastle

Tammy probably getting hauled off around the hour mark for Batsman (or maybe even giroud). Captain fail, what a great way to start an FPL week.

1-1 score with Mount (Abraham assist) and Palace player who isn't Kelly, with the goals is ideal for me here.
