What to do with Jamie Vardy and John Lundstram in FPL?

Az looks at two problematic players and the options available to Fantasy managers who own them.

So, after a strong 11 weeks which saw me move from a rank of around two million to 115,000, the last four weeks have seen me get a bit stuck in the mud.

In the last four Gameweeks, I’ve risen 3,000 places to a rank of 112,000. It’s hardly a meteoric rise but after a turbulent season, a bit of stability and consolidation is quite welcome.

Now we’re in February, it seems a good time to think about your targets for the end of the season. Like last year, I’m seeing good managers high in the rankings – but other veteran players are struggling. Triple captaincy success and failures, in people’s minds at least, have made or broken seasons.

But a strong finish is still possible. Coincidentally, it was after Gameweek 25 last year that I hit my worst rank of the season. Staring at a rank of 408,000, I was feeling quite pessimistic but still managed to get myself safely inside the top 100k (finishing around the 62,000 mark).

It can be tempting to go for broke when you see others’ success stories (for example, I’ve seen people rising from 300k to 80k in one week), but I feel like steady gains are key rather than chasing big hauls. With chips left to play, and 13 Gameweeks to go, even those who feel like their season is unrecoverable can still have a good finish.

I can’t see any reason why people sitting in the millions can’t realistically achieve a comfortable finish inside the top 100k if they resist the urge to take too many ‘punts’ and potentially cause more damage.

As we so often see with Fantasy Football, the times are a’changing. With high ownership comes great potential to move away from the herd, no matter what rank you are. And there seem to be two heavily owned players who we need to make a decision on.

What to do with Jamie Vardy?

As Jamie Vardy (£9.8m) scored another goal in Gameweek 18 against Manchester City, his tenth attacking return in a row, it seemed unthinkable that he would only get a solitary assist in the next seven matches.

For any with the foresight to take him out, congratulations, but owners of the Englishman have a decision to make, as there’s no doubt that Vardy’s form gives cause for concern.

Vardy seems to be suffering with a niggling injury. His stats against Chelsea and Burnley, in particular, were both really poor, with only six penalty area touches and three goal attempts in these games. His high price point and poor form are seeing him shed sellers by the thousands but at the time of writing he remains in 39.4% of squads and if you move him on for a forward who can start to deliver consistently, then this is a ticket up the rankings for sure.

A week ago, we had a pool of strikers scoring points for fun. However, Gameweek 24 made a mockery of this, with Roberto Firmino (£9.7m), Troy Deeney (£6.3m), Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m), Glenn Murray (£5.4m) and new boy, Mbwana Samatta (£6.0m), the only recognised FPL forwards notching returns.

However, high hopes for other strikers, such as Raul Jimenez (£7.7m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m), Danny Ings (£7.0m), Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), Tammy Abraham (£7.7m) and even slightly more left-field options like Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.1m), showcase the potential that getting the three “right” strikers for the coming weeks.

For me, if I could pick three strikers going forward, I’d go for Ings, Jimenez and Aubemeyang (making sure I had a suitable replacement to come in for Gameweek 28).

Ings has blanked in his last three games, but with matches against Wolves and Liverpool, plus a 20-minute cameo away at Crystal Palace, this perhaps isn’t too surprising. He’s remained a threat throughout and 14 penalty area touches, ten goal attempts (with nine in the box) and an xG of 1.59 tells me that he hasn’t lost his way. With a great run of fixtures to come, and a modest price tag, he seems a great pick.

Jimenez is a player who I sold a few weeks ago and while his replacement (Firmino) has done well, the Mexican is calling out to me. There are few strikers as consistent as Jimenez: he has registered attacking returns in 14 games and seems to tick over each week.

I know some grow frustrated with his lack of “big” hauls (he does actually have three double-digit returns this season), but it’s important to remember this is a £7.7m striker. Barring injury, I’d say he’s a keeper from now until the end of the season.

While Firmino is performing well in my side, I am conscious that Sadio Mané (£12.2m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) may have a part to play in my season, and so am casting my eye enviously at owners of Aubameyang, who is back from suspension and made it through a tricky game away to Burnley with a blank –  which I hope will put new suitors off.

The Gabon international – in my view the front runner for the Golden Boot – plays some of the leakiest defences in the league over the next seven Gameweeks, with home games against Newcastle, West Ham and Norwich all looking particularly inviting. I’d be amazed if he didn’t score some serious points in these weeks, and I wonder if Mikel Arteta will look to use him more centrally with rotation on the cards for the likes of Gabriel Martinelli (£4.6m), Nicholas Pépe (£9.1m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m).

What to do with John Lundstram?

As a late arrival to the Lord John Lundstram (£5.1m) party, I perhaps don’t view him with the same regards as some of you reading this article. I can’t deny that the former £4.0m FPL defender has shone this season, with his 21-point haul against Burnley a frankly legendary reward for owners, but the writing has been on the wall for a few weeks now.

One of the main reasons I avoided Lundstram at the start of the season was because of the amount of competition in the midfield for Sheffield United, and as he wasn’t even first choice when they were in the Championship, I sensed that only an incredible run of form at the start of the campaign would mean he kept his place – which is of course exactly what happened.

However, recently Lundstram has been off-form, subbed in two matches and then relegated to the bench for the next two. The signing of Sander Berge (£5.0m) adds further competition to midfield and rumours of contract disputes with Chris Wilder continue to rumble.

Praise for Lundstram’s contribution from the bench did not go unnoticed by his army of followers but with Sheffield United having a superb run of games, it seems vital to be moving forward with at least one defender in your ranks.

For those with Dean Henderson (£5.0m), perhaps Lundstram’s current situation is less of an issue. But for those with just the Lord, I think now is the time to thank John for his points and pack his bags.

The trouble is, Lundstram’s fellow ‘defenders’ possess almost no goal threat.

Enda Stevens (£5.1m) and George Baldock (£5.1m) both cost a bit more if you have owned Lundstram since the start of the season, and if you are after goals, I wouldn’t hold your breath. Over the last six Gameweeks, they have had three goal attempts between them.

While Baldock only has two chances created to his name, Stevens has six, and looks the better option from the stats and my own “eye test”. The centre-backs, while a bit cheaper, are even less likely to score you points outside of clean sheets, with only one assist between the three of them.

But it’s clean sheets which seem to be Sheffield United’s forte, and £4.5m for a defender for a team that loves a 1-0 win still seems a bargain. Stevens would still be my pick if you can afford him, but for those with Lundstram and Henderson, I would be tempted to stick with the Lord and hope he regains his place. I still feel like he offers something that other players in the team do not, and if he does get his contract sorted, may yet have a part to play in our squads and seasons.

There’s a very decent chance there will now only be 3 games on in GW31.

If Liverpool put out a ‘stronger’ team vs Chelsea, it would help this a lot.

All Prem wins in the next round + Liverpool would be true carnage!

The only guaranteed games now, until the 3rd of March are:

    Wolves vs Bournemouth
    Burnley vs Watford
Spurs vs West Ham or Norwich vs Everton

It really wouldn't be worth using the free hit in my opinion. I won't get close to fielding 11 without it but there's just not enough points to be gained

As opposed to FH'ing when you can already field 11? I think FH to guarantee 11 starters is well worth it.

Yeah I'm not sure I get this argument. If most teams are going to have 4-6 starters then having 11 seems like a big advantage. Weak teams score goals too.

    Apologies for the long post.

Opinion: FH is a good option in GW31 if there are only 3/4 confirmed fixtures.

Reason: Much smaller player pool to choose from vastly increases likelihood of picking the right players. You know how whenever there's a Friday night game, after FPL updates you're on 0 points and the average is like 2 or something, but there's always that one guy who's on 58 because he had 6 players in that match? It's like that. Setting up your team for just 2 matches is so much easier than for 10. 3 or 4 matches is a little harder, but still easier than 10, and actually gives you some better options to pick.

Common argument against: All FH teams will be the same so you're not gaining anything.
-- Whilst this is true, people seem to conveniently forget that not everyone is playing the FH. This is actually very circular logic because if you think that everyone has the same team so you don't gain by playing FH, and end up not playing the FH, that means fewer people are playing the chip, and so the FHer ends up with a bigger rank gain. Please remember that FFS is only a small proportion of total players. Triple Captain % on here in GW24 was probably something like 99% of posters but only a small fraction (can't remember, 20% or something) of the total population. Even if everyone on here had the exact same players, we'll just be making gains together.

Common argument against: The teams are crap with no good options.
-- All games contribute FPL points, even the crap ones. You all captained Salah last week and rejoiced in his 16 points but the highest scorer of the week was Snodgrass. Only 2 things are possible in ANY game, either someone scores, in which case you have the potential of attacking returns, or nobody scores, in which case you have the potential of defending returns. Wolves are consistent returners, Bournemouth are consistently rubbish, Watford have a strong attack and rubbish defence, Norwich are dreadful defenders at home and Everton carry plenty of threat. A FH XI can easily get you 50+ with these players.

Common argument against: Saving the FH for a DGW is better.
-- Let's do some quick maths. If you can somehow muster up 7 starters for BGW31, ignoring the fact that you probably don't want them going forwards, you are missing out on 4 spots in your team. So if I FH in BGW31 and use FTs to set up a team for DGW34 (or 37), I only need 18 games to break even with this (22-4=18). But if I FH in GW31, I don't need to do any prep beforehand setting up 7 starters for GW31, and can instead stock up on DGW players for GW34 instead. Given that I already have 6 confirmed blankers in GW28, they will all have doubles and I have another 6 weeks after GW28 to grab a full team of DGW players. So it is entirely feasible that you can play 11 players in GW31 AND 22 in GW34, which by sheer weight of numbers trumps the FH in GW34.

Disclaimer - throwing this opinion our there to discuss, this is not my final decision nor am I trying to convince anyone this is 100% the correct decision. Just that I've seen many reasons for why not to use FH in GW31 and not sure they are entirely valid.

All very good points, deserves a hulk.
Another argument in favour of FH'ing is that it allows planning in a normal way for the GW's around the BGW without destroying your team.

      Good points.

But those 3 games could also be low scoring 0 0 games or with goalscorers no one owns.

And stacking up players for dgw 34 sounds good on paper, but there are many gws in between and a lot of things that can happen (injuries, suspension, rotation) and fires the put out with transfers.

Yeah possibly. First waiting to see when all the fixtures for the dgws are final. Maybe then reasses.
Atm not really in great need for WC, few problems but easy fixable with a small hit.

The nature of TV he games is key I think. The premise that all PL games start equal is out imo. In a full week you can be confident of a 40 plus score as you can target a mismatch with form players in a good fixture.

The only tempting fixture right now is Wolves Bournemouth. But Wolves rarely put teams away and specialise in 1-1 2-1 results and Bournemouth aren’t rubbish all the time.

But if you FH 34 you have plenty of time to build for 37 and in any event triple Liverpool is probably held anyway.

Also Burnley and Wolves have players such as Taylor and Traoré who can be fodder and not traded out

The other factor when you only have a really small pool of teams to choose from (like GW31 with 6-8 teams), is your squad inevitably will have more defenders playing attacking players from the same game than usual. i.e Jimi/Traore vs Rico, Pope vs Sarr, Wood vs Cathcart etc. Also if the more usual suspect score/assist (Gosling/Neves etc) it has a bigger impact because of the lack of games. This could potentially limit the max score for GW31.

It will likely limit the people who plan to play through GW31 with FTs more, because you have to pick "better" players to fit the overall squad balance of GW26-30something. Whereas with a FH you could balance this a little more, and negate it and score well if you can pick the winning sides (or get a disaster score and wasted chip if not).

I think the Chelsea/Liverpool cup tie in GW28 will probably help the decision, because you will either get a spine of Wolves/Liverpool players at home, with a GK like Pope, a few cheap rotational defenders you've stashed on your bench, and a punt on an mid/att enabler like Sarr/DCL/Wood or Cantwell. If that happens you could get an acceptable 10 which mostly lives on the bench in the prior GWs. Without that Liverpool spine though you get x6/7 and it looks like crap.

My plan is to be patient and transfer by stats/form/fixtures as normal, and if there are no pressing needs just tinker with the bench and rotational players like Kelly/Lund with an eye on GW31, roll the FT, and wait until it clears up in 28/29.

Only worry with late DGW players is the rotation factor in the CL/Europa/ FACup etc. My guess is Liverpool, Spurs, and Wolves will get to the later rounds and reckon the rest will get knocked out.

They "normally" at least give some free kicks. For the first half I thought he had forgot his whistle. The Sessengnon challenge was almost at the knee. Nothing given. 2nd half it seemd like someone had offered him cash for giving more free kicks which means you end up having to book people.

Not sure. Buttigieg *could* beat him as he doesn't have political baggage that the old Democrats have.

For me Buttigieg is the stats play. The type of candidate, if selected by Democrats, that can win in the same vein as Clinton, Obama etc. If you look at the stats, Democrats never do well with old establishment candidates - Gore, Kerry, Clinton etc. Sanders, Warren, Bloomberg and Biden fit that bill.

Will the Democrats play the stats though?

        Nonsense.

Warren and Sanders are far from 'old establishment'. Sanders can and will win if he's the candidate. But becoming the candidate is the hard part.

          • 8 Years

Sanders is old establishment. He has been in politics for decades. Everyone knows who he is. He is a marmite candidate. Just because he is seen as 'radical' does not mean he is not establishment. Sanders has been part of politics in the US for decades and that makes him establishment.

Warren is less establishment, but she is still a long time political activist and she is still old.

Why is Vardy being considered a 'problematic' player? 4 blanks from the last 5 games he has started, however one of those matches was against the impenetrable defence of Liverpool, 1 match he played only 42 mins he missed a penalty in another. Hardly a crisis.
